Unravelling the asphericities in the explosion and multi-faceted circumstellar matter of SN 2023ixf

We present a detailed investigation of photometric, spectroscopic, and polarimetric observations of the Type II SN 2023ixf. Earlier studies have provided compelling evidence for a delayed shock breakout from a confined dense circumstellar matter (CSM) enveloping the progenitor star. The temporal evolution of polarization in SN~2023ixf revealed three distinct peaks in polarization evolution at 1.4 d, 6.4 d, and 79.2 d, indicating an asymmetric dense CSM, an aspherical shock front and clumpiness in the low-density extended CSM, and an aspherical inner ejecta/He-core. SN 2023ixf displayed two dominant axes, one along the CSM-outer ejecta and the other along the inner ejecta/He-core, showcasing the independent origin of asymmetry in the early and late evolution. The argument for an aspherical shock front is further strengthened by the presence of a high-velocity broad absorption feature in the blue wing of the Balmer features in addition to the P-Cygni absorption post 16 d. Hydrodynamical light curve modeling indicated a progenitor of 10 solar mass with a radius of 470 solar radii and explosion energy of 2e51 erg, along with 0.06 solar mass of 56-Ni, though these properties are not unique due to modeling degeneracies. The modeling also indicated a two-zone CSM: a confined dense CSM extending up to 5e14 cm, with a mass-loss rate of 1e-2 solar mass per year, and an extended CSM spanning from 5e14 cm to at least 1e16cm with a mass-loss rate of 1e-4 solar mass per year, both assuming a wind-velocity of 10 km/s. The early nebular phase observations display an axisymmetric line profile of [OI], red-ward attenuation of the emission of Halpha post 125 days, and flattening in the Ks-band, marking the onset of dust formation.

Determination of the local structure of Sr$_{2-x}$M$_x$IrO$_4$ (M = K, La) as a function of doping and temperature

The local structure of correlated spin-orbit insulator Sr$_{2-x}$M$_x$IrO$_4$ (M = K, La) has been investigated by Ir L$_3$-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements. The measurements were performed as a function of temperature for different dopings induced by substitution of Sr with La or K. It is found that Ir-O bonds have strong covalency and they hardly show any change across the Néel temperature. In the studied doping range, neither Ir-O bonds nor their dynamics, measured by their mean square relative displacements, show any appreciable change upon carrier doping, indicating possibility of a nanoscale phase separation in the doped system. On the other hand, there is a large increase of the static disorder in Ir-Sr correlation, larger for K doping than La doping. Similarities and differences with respect to the local lattice displacements in cuprates are briefly discussed.

Evolution of remnant Fermi surface state in lightly-doped correlated spin-orbit insulator Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$

Electronic structure has been studied in lightly electron doped correlated spin-orbit insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. We have observed coexistence of the lower Hubbard band and the in-gap band, the momentum dependence of the latter traces that of the band calculations without on-site Coulomb repulsion. The in-gap state remained anisotropically gapped in all observed momentum area, forming a remnant Fermi surface state, evolving towards the Fermi energy by carrier doping. These experimental results show a striking similarity with those observed in deeply underdoped cuprates, suggesting the common nature of the nodal liquid states observed in both compounds.

New outburst of the symbiotic nova AG Peg after 165 years

AG Peg is known as the slowest symbiotic nova, which experienced its nova-like outburst around 1850. After 165 years, during June of 2015, it erupted again showing characteristics of the Z And-type outburst. The primary objective is to determine basic characteristics, the nature and type of the 2015 outburst of AG Peg. We achieved this aim by modelling the spectral energy distribution using low-resolution spectroscopy (330-750 nm), medium-resolution spectroscopy (420-720 nm; R=11000), and $UBVR_{\rm C}I_{\rm C}$ photometry covering the 2015 outburst with a high cadence. Optical observations were complemented with the archival HST and FUSE spectra from the preceding quiescence. During the outburst, the luminosity of the hot component was in the range of 2-11$\times 10^{37}(d/0.8{\rm kpc})^2$ erg/s. To generate the maximum luminosity the white dwarf (WD) had to accrete at $\sim 3\times 10^{-7}$ M$_{\odot}yr^{-1}$, which exceeds the stable-burning limit and thus led to blowing optically thick wind from the WD. We determined its mass-loss rate to a few $\times 10^{-6}$ M$_{\odot}yr^{-1}$. At the high temperature of the ionising source, $1.5-2.3\times 10^5$ K, the wind converted a fraction of the WD's photospheric radiation into the nebular emission that dominated the optical. A one order of magnitude increase of the emission measure, from a few $\times 10^{59}(d/0.8 {\rm kpc})^2$ cm$^{-3}$ during quiescence, to a few $\times 10^{60}(d/0.8\,{\rm kpc})^2$ cm$^{-3}$ during the outburst, caused a 2 mag brightening in the LC, which is classified as the Z And-type of the outburst. The very high nebular emission and the presence of a disk-like HI region encompassing the WD, as indicated by a significant broadening and high flux of the Raman-scattered OVI 6825 Å line during the outburst, is consistent with the ionisation structure of hot components in symbiotic stars during active phases.

Estimates of operator convex and operator monotone functions on bounded intervals

Recently the behavior of operator monotone functions on unbounded intervals with respect to the relation of strictly positivity has been investigated. In this paper we deeply study such behavior not only for operator monotone functions but also for operator convex functions on bounded intervals. More precisely, we prove that if $f$ is a nonlinear operator convex function on a bounded interval $(a,b)$ and $A, B$ are bounded linear operators acting on a Hilbert space with spectra in $(a,b)$ and $A-B$ is invertible, then $sf(A)+(1-s)f(B)>f(sA+(1-s)B)$. A short proof for a similar known result concerning a nonconstant operator monotone function on $[0,\infty)$ is presented. Another purpose is to find a lower bound for $f(A)-f(B)$, where $f$ is a nonconstant operator monotone function, by using a key lemma. We also give an estimation of the Furuta inequality, which is an excellent extension of the Löwner--Heinz inequality.

Early evolution of the extraordinary Nova Del 2013 (V339 Del)

We determine the temporal evolution of the luminosity L(WD), radius R(WD) and effective temperature Teff of the white dwarf (WD) pseudophotosphere of V339 Del from its discovery to around day 40. Another main objective was studying the ionization structure of the ejecta. These aims were achieved by modelling the optical/near-IR spectral energy distribution (SED) using low-resolution spectroscopy (3500 - 9200 A), UBVRcIc and JHKLM photometry. During the fireball stage (Aug. 14.8 - 19.9, 2013), Teff was in the range of 6000 - 12000 K, R(WD) was expanding non-uniformly in time from around 66 to around 300 (d/3 kpc) R(Sun), and L(WD) was super-Eddington, but not constant. After the fireball stage, a large emission measure of 1.0-2.0E+62 (d/3 kpc)**2 cm**(-3) constrained the lower limit of L(WD) to be well above the super-Eddington value. The evolution of the H-alpha line and mainly the transient emergence of the Raman-scattered O VI 1032 A line suggested a biconical ionization structure of the ejecta with a disk-like H I region persisting around the WD until its total ionization, around day 40. It is evident that the nova was not evolving according to the current theoretical prediction. The unusual non-spherically symmetric ejecta of nova V339 Del and its extreme physical conditions and evolution during and after the fireball stage represent interesting new challenges for the theoretical modelling of the nova phenomenon.

Observational study of the extremely slow nova V1280 Scorpii

We present multi-color light curves and optical spectra of V1280 Scorpii obtained from 2007 to 2012. It is shown that V1280 Sco is the extremely slow nova and the mass of white dwarf appears to be $\sim$ 0.6 M$\odot$ or lower. Blue-shifted multiple absorption lines of Na {\sc i} D, Ca {\sc ii} HK, and He {\sc i*} are detected on high-resolution spectra. We also discuss that an approach using metastable He absorption lines is useful to investigate structures of nova shells.

Five-Year Optical and Near Infrared Observations of the Extremely Slow Nova V1280 Scorpii

We present optical ($B$, $V$, $R_{\rm c}$, $I_{\rm c}$ and $y$) and near infrared ($J$, $H$ and $K_{\rm s}$) photometric and spectroscopic observations of a classical nova V1280 Scorpii for five years from 2007 to 2011. Our photometric observations show a declining event in optical bands shortly after the maximum light which continues $\sim$ 250 days. The event is most probably caused by a dust formation. The event is accompanied by a short ($\sim$ 30 days) re-brightening episode ($\sim$ 2.5 mag in $V$), which suggests a re-ignition of the surface nuclear burning. After 2008, the $y$ band observations show a very long plateau at around $y$ = 10.5 for more than 1000 days until April 2011 ($\sim$ 1500 days after the maximum light). The nova had taken a very long time ($\sim$ 50 months) before entering the nebular phase (clear detection of both [\ion{O}{iii}] 4959 and 5007) and is still continuing to generate the wind caused by H-burning. The finding suggests that V1280 Sco is going through the historically slowest evolution. The interval from the maximum light (2007 February 16) to the beginning of the nebular phase is longer than any previously known slow novae: V723 Cas (18 months), RR Pic (10 months), or HR Del (8 months). It suggests that the mass of a white dwarf in the V1280 Sco system might be 0.6 $M_\mathrm{\sun}$ or smaller. The distance, based on our measurements of the expansion velocity combined with the directly measured size of the dust shell, is estimated to be 1.1 $\pm$ 0.5 kpc.

Dunkl--Williams inequality for operators \\ associated with $p$-angular distance

We present several operator versions of the Dunkl--Williams inequality with respect to the $p$-angular distance for operators. More precisely, we show that if $A, B \in \mathbb{B}(\mathscr{H})$ such that $|A|$ and $|B|$ are invertible, $\frac{1}{r}+\frac{1}{s}=1\,\,(r>1)$ and $p\in\mathbb{R}$, then \begin{equation*} |A|A|^{p-1}-B|B|^{p-1}|^{2} \leq |A|^{p-1}(r|A-B|^{2}+s||A|^{1-p}|B|^{p}-|B||^2)|A|^{p-1}.%\nonumber \end{equation*} In the case that $0 0$, then $$|(U|A|^{p}-V|B|^{p})|A|^{1-p}|^{2}\leq (1+t)|A-B|^{2}+(1+\frac{1}{t})||B|^{p}|A|^{1-p}-|B||^2 \,.$$ We obtain several equivalent conditions, when the case of equalities hold.

Spectroscopic Observations of WZ Sge-type Dwarf Novae, GW Lib and V455 And in Superoutburst

We carried out intensive spectroscopic observations of two WZ Sge-type dwarf novae, GW Lib, and V455 And during their superoutbursts in 2007, at 6 observatories. The observations covered the whole of both superoutbursts from the very maximum to the fading tail. We found evidence of the winds having a speed of $\sim$1000 km s$^{-1}$ which blew in GW Lib during the rising phase. The evolution of the hydrogen, helium, and carbon lines suggests flaring of the accretion disk and emergence of the temperature inversion layer on the disk.

Evolution of Star Clusters near the Galactic Center: Fully Self-consistent N-body Simulations

We have performed fully self-consistent $N$-body simulations of star clusters near the Galactic center (GC). Such simulations have not been performed because it is difficult to perform fast and accurate simulations of such systems using conventional methods. We used the Bridge code, which integrates the parent galaxy using the tree algorithm and the star cluster using the fourth-order Hermite scheme with individual timestep. The interaction between the parent galaxy and the star cluster is calculate with the tree algorithm. Therefore, the Bridge code can handle both the orbital and internal evolutions of star clusters correctly at the same time. We investigated the evolution of star clusters using the Bridge code and compared the results with previous studies. We found that 1) the inspiral timescale of the star clusters is shorter than that obtained with "traditional" simulations, in which the orbital evolution of star clusters is calculated analytically using the dynamical friction formula and 2) the core collapse of the star cluster increases the core density and help the cluster survive. The initial conditions of star clusters is not so severe as previously suggested.

Energy transfer processes in Er-doped SiO2 sensitized with Si nanocrystals

We present a high-resolution photoluminescence study of Er-doped SiO2 sensitized with Si nanocrystals (Si NCs). Emission bands originating from recombination of excitons confined in Si NCs and of internal transitions within the 4f-electron core of Er3+ ions, and a band centered at lambda = 1200nm have been identified. Their kinetics have been investigated in detail. Based on these measurements, we present a comprehensive model for energy transfer mechanisms responsible for light generation in this system. A unique picture of energy flow between subsystems of Er3+ and Si NCs is developed, yielding truly microscopic information on the sensitization effect and its limitations. In particular, we show that most of the Er3+ ions available in the system are participating in the energy exchange. The long standing problem of apparent loss of optical activity of majority of Er dopants upon sensitization with Si NCs is clarified and assigned to appearance of a very efficient energy exchange mechanism between Si NCs and Er3+ ions. Application potential of SiO2:Er sensitized by Si NCs is discussed in view of the newly acquired microscopic insight.

Observation of the first gravitational microlensing event in a sparse stellar field : the Tago event

We report the observation of the first gravitational microlensing event in a sparse stellar field, involving the brightest (V=11.4 mag) andclosest (~ 1 kpc) source star to date. This event was discovered by an amateurastronomer, A. Tago, on 2006 October 31 as a transient brightening, by ~4.5 mag during a ~15 day period, of a normal A-type star (GSC 3656-1328) in the Cassiopeia constellation. Analysis of both spectroscopic observations and the light curve indicates that this event was caused by gravitational microlensing rather than an intrinsically variable star. Discovery of this single event over a 30 year period is roughly consistent with the expected microlensing rate for the whole sky down to V = 12 mag stars. However, the probability for finding events with such a high magnification (~ 50) is much smaller, by a factor ~1/50, which implies that the true event rate may be higher than expected. This discovery indicates the potential of all sky variability surveys, employing frequent sampling by telescopes with small apertures and wide fields of view, for finding such rare transient events, and using the observations to explore galactic disk structure and search for exo-planets.

BRIDGE: A Direct-tree Hybrid N-body Algorithm for Fully Self-consistent Simulations of Star Clusters and their Parent Galaxies

We developed a new direct-tree hybrid N-body algorithm for fully self-consistent N-body simulations of star clusters in their parent galaxies. In such simulations, star clusters need high accuracy, while galaxies need a fast scheme because of the large number of the particles required to model it. In our new algorithm, the internal motion of the star cluster is calculated accurately using the direct Hermite scheme with individual timesteps and all other motions are calculated using the tree code with second-order leapfrog integrator. The direct and tree schemes are combined using an extension of the mixed variable symplectic (MVS) scheme. Thus, the Hamiltonian corresponding to everything other than the internal motion of the star cluster is integrated with the leapfrog, which is symplectic. Using this algorithm, we performed fully self-consistent N-body simulations of star clusters in their parent galaxy. The internal and orbital evolutions of the star cluster agreed well with those obtained using the direct scheme. We also performed fully self-consistent N-body simulation for large-N models ($N=2\times 10^6$). In this case, the calculation speed was seven times faster than what would be if the direct scheme was used.

Upper Bound On Gluino Mass From Thermal Leptogenesis

Thermal leptogenesis requires the reheating temperature $T_R \gsim 3\times 10^{9}$ GeV, which contradicts a recently obtained constraint on the reheating temperature, $T_R \lsim 10^6$ GeV, for the gravitino mass of 100 GeV-10 TeV. This stringent constraint comes from the fact that the hadronic decays of gravitinos destroy very efficiently light elements produced by the Big-Bang nucleosynthesis. However, it is not applicable if the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). We show that this solution to the gravitino problem works for the case where the next LSP is a scalar charged lepton or a scalar neutrino. We point out that there is an upper bound on the gluino mass as $m_{\rm gluino} \lsim 1.8$ TeV so that the energy density of gravitino does not exceed the observed dark matter density $Ω_{\rm DM}h^2\simeq 0.11$.

Thermal Leptogenesis and Gauge Mediation

We show that a mini-thermal inflation occurs naturally in a class of gauge mediation models of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking, provided that the reheating temperature T_R of the primary inflation is much higher than the SUSY-breaking scale, say T_R > 10^{10} GeV. The reheating process of the thermal inflation produces an amount of entropy, which dilutes the number density of relic gravitinos. This dilution renders the gravitino to be the dark matter in the present universe. The abundance of the gravitinos is independent of the reheating temperature T_R, once the gravtinos are thermally produced after the reheating of the primary inflation. We find that the thermal leptogenesis takes place at T_L\simeq 10^{12-14} GeV for m_{3/2}\simeq 100 keV - 10 MeV without any gravitino problem.

V463 Scuti (Nova Sct 2000): Rapidly Evolving Nova with a Prominent Premaximum Halt

We summarize photometric and spectroscopic observations of V463 Sct (Nova Sct 2000), which was originally thought to be a red variable. The spectrum taken on 2000 March 16.81 UT showed prominent emission lines with a FHWM of 990 km/s (H alpha). The light curve shows a conspicuous premaximum halt lasting at least for 24 d, and a late-phase flare-like maximum. The nova then started rapidly fading at a rate corresponding to t2 = 15 +/- 3 d. Long premaximum halts have been considered as a unique character of the "slowest" novae. The present observation, however, suggests that the long premaximum halts are not a unique character of the slowest novae, but a more general phenomenon spreading over a wider range of nova speed classes than has been previously believed. A recent interpretation of premaximum halts requires that the conditions of thermonuclear runaway was only marginally satisfied. Since such conditions are more difficult to meet in rapidly evolving novae, V463 Sct would provide an unique opportunity in testing this interpretation. The early post-outburst spectrum showed co-existence of Fe II lines and some forbidden lines, which suggests that substantial amount of material may have been ejected before the observed optical maximum. The impact of the modern global network (VSNET) on confirmatory processes of transient objects is briefly discussed.

Raman scattering by electron-hole excitations in silver nanocrystals

Raman scattering experiments from silver nanocrystals embedded in films of amorphous silica are reported. In addition to the low-frequency peak due to vibrational quadrupolar modes, a broadband is observed in the high-frequency range, with a maximum at about 1000 $cm^{-1}$. The linear dependence of the position of this maximum on the inverse cluster radius is in agreement with the Raman scattering by single or collective electron-hole excitations.
