Heavy quark expansion parameters from lattice NRQCD

Using the lattice NRQCD action for heavy quark, we calculate the heavy quark expansion parameters $μ_π^2$ and $μ_G^2$ for heavy-light mesons and heavy-light-light baryons. The results are compared with the mass differences among heavy hadrons to test the validity of HQET relations on the lattice.

Exploration of sea quark effects in two-flavor QCD with the O(a)-improved Wilson quark action

We explore sea quark effects in the light hadron mass spectrum in a simulation of two-flavor QCD using the nonperturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson fermion action. In order to identify finite-size effects, light meson masses are measured on 12^3x48, 16^3x48 and 20^3x48 lattices with a~0.1 fm. On the largest lattice, where the finite-size effect is negligible, we find a significant increase of the strange vector meson mass compared to the quenched approximation. We also investigate the quark mass dependence of pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants and test the consistency with (partially quenched) chiral perturbation theory.

I=2 Pion Scattering Length and Phase Shift with Wilson Fermions

We present preliminary results of scattering length and phase shift for I=2 S-wave $ππ$ system with the Wilson fermions in the quenched approximation. The finite size method presented by Lüscher is employed, and calculations are carried out at $β=5.9$ on a $24^3\times 60$ and $32^3\times 60$ lattice.

Chiral property of domain-wall fermion from eigenvalues of 4D Wilson-Dirac Operator

We investigate a chiral property of the domain-wall fermion (DWF) system using the four-dimensional hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator $H_W$. A formula expressing the Ward-Takahashi identity quark mass $m_{5q}$ with eigenvalues of this operator is derived, which well explains the $N_5$ dependence of $m_{5q}$ observed in previous numerical simulations. We further discuss the chiral property of DWF in the large volume in terms of the spectra of $H_W$.

Maximum entropy analysis of hadron spectral functions and excited states in quenched lattice QCD

Employing the maximum entropy method we extract the spectral functions from meson correlators at four lattice spacings in quenched QCD with the Wilson quark action. We confirm that the masses and decay constants, obtained from the position and the area of peaks, agree well with the results from the conventional exponential fit. For the first excited state, we obtain $m_{π_1} = 660(590)$ MeV, $m_{ρ_1} = 1540(570)$ MeV, and $f_{ρ_1} = 0.085(36)$ in the continuum limit.

Charmonium spectrum from quenched QCD on anisotropic lattices

We present our final results of the charmonium spectrum in quenched QCD on anisotropic lattices. Simulations are made with the plaquette gauge action and a tadpole improved clover quark action employing $ξ= a_s/a_t = 3$. We calculate the spectrum of S- and P-states and their excitation, and study the scaling behavior of mass splittings. Comparison is made with the experiment and previous lattice results. The issue of hyperfine splitting for different choices of the clover coefficients obtained by Klassen is discussed.

Calculation of $K\toππ$ decay amplitudes from $K\toπ$ matrix elements in quenched domain-wall QCD

We present a calculation of the $K\toππ$ decay amplitudes from the $K\toπ$ matrix elements using leading order relations derived in chiral perturbation theory. Numerical simulations are carried out in quenched QCD with the domain-wall fermion action and the renormalization group improved gluon action. Our results show that the I=2 amplitude is reasonably consistent with experiment whereas the I=0 amplitude is sizably smaller. Consequently the $ΔI=1/2$ enhancement is only half of the experimental value, and $ε'/ε$ is negative.

Non-perturbative renormalization for a renormalization group improved gauge action

Renormalization constants of vector ($Z_V$) and axial-vector ($Z_A$) currents are determined non-perturbatively in quenched QCD for a renormalization group improved gauge action and a tadpole improved clover quark action using the Schrödinger functional method. Non-perturbative values of $Z_V$ and $Z_A$ turn out to be smaller than the one-loop perturbative values by $O(10%)$ at $a^{-1}\approx 1$ GeV. A sizable scaling violation of meson decay constants $f_π$ and $f_ρ$ observed with the one-loop renormalization factors remains even with non-perturbative renormalization.

Early-type galaxies in the SDSS

A sample of nearly 9000 early-type galaxies, in the redshift range 0.01<z<0.3, was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey using morphological and spectral criteria. The sample was used to study how early-type galaxy observables, including luminosity L, effective radius R, surface brightness I, color, and velocity dispersion V, are correlated with one another. Measurement biases are understood with mock catalogs which reproduce all of the observed scaling relations. At any given redshift, the intrinsic distribution of luminosities, sizes and velocity dispersions in our sample are all approximately Gaussian. In the r* band L ~ V^3.91, L ~ R^1.58, R ~ I^(-0.75), and the Fundamental Plane relation is R ~ V^(1.49) I^(-0.75). These relations are approximately the same in the g*, i* and z* bands. At fixed luminosity, the mass-to-light ratio scales as M/L ~ L^0.14. The g*-r* color scales as V^0.25. Color also correlates with magnitude and size, but these correlations are entirely due to the L-V and R-V relations. Chemical evolution and star formation histories are investigated using co-added spectra of similar objects in our sample. Chemical abundances correlate primarily with velocity dispersion. At fixed V, the higher redshift population is bluer, is weaker in Mg2, and is stronger in Hbeta than the population nearby. In addition, the population at higher redshifts is slightly more luminous. These differences are consistent with that of a passively evolving population which formed the bulk of its stars about 9 Gyrs ago. The Fundamental Plane suggests that galaxies in dense regions are slightly different from those in less dense regions, but the co-added spectra and color--magnitude relations show no statistically significant dependence on environment.

Non-trivial phase structure of $N_f=3$ QCD with $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermion at zero temperature

JLQCD collaboration recently started the $N_f=3$ QCD simulations with the $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermion action employing an exact fermion algorithm developed for odd number of quark flavors. It is found that this theory has an unexpected non-trivial phase structure in the $(β,κ)$ plane even at zero temperature. A detailed study is made to understand the nature of the observed phase transitions and to find the way of avoiding untolerably large lattice artifacts associated with the phase transition.

Equation of state for pure SU(3) gauge theory on anisotropic lattices

We present results for the equation of state for pure SU(3) gauge theory obtained on anisotropic lattices with the anisotropy $ξ\equiv a_s/a_t = 2$. The pressure and energy density are calculated on $N_t / ξ= 4, 5$ and 6 lattices with the integral method. They are found to satisfy the leading $1/N_t^2$ scaling from our coarsest lattice $N_t/ξ=4$. This enables us to carry out well controlled continuum extrapolations. We find that the pressure and energy density agree with those obtained using the isotropic plaquette action, but have smaller and more reliable errors.

An exact algorithm for three-flavor QCD with $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermions

We present an exact dynamical QCD simulation algorithm for the $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermion with odd number of flavors. Our algorithm is an extension of the non-Hermitian polynomials HMC algorithm proposed by Takaishi and de Forcrand previously. In our algorithm, the systematic errors caused by the polynomial approximation of the inverse of Dirac operator is removed by a noisy-Metropolis test. For one flavor quark it is achieved by taking the square root of the correction matrix explicitly. We test our algorithm for the case of $N_f=1+1$ on a moderately large lattice size ($16^3\times48$). The $N_f=2+1$ case is also investigated.

B meson B-parameters and the decay constant in two-flavor dynamical QCD

We present a two-flavor dynamical QCD calculation of the B meson B parameters and decay constant. We use NRQCD for heavy quark and the nonperturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson action for light quark at $β$=5.2 on a $20^3\times 48$ lattice. We confirm that the sea quark effect increases the heavy-light decay constant, while estimate of its magnitude depends significantly on the fitting form in the chiral extrapolation. For the B parameters, on the other hand, we do not find a significant sea quark effect. The chiral extrapolation with logarithmic term is examined for both quantities and compared with the prediction of ChPT.

Spectroscopic Target Selection for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: The Luminous Red Galaxy Sample

We describe the target selection and resulting properties of a spectroscopic sample of luminous, red galaxies (LRG) from the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). These galaxies are selected on the basis of color and magnitude to yield a sample of luminous, intrinsically red galaxies that extends fainter and further than the main flux-limited portion of the SDSS galaxy spectroscopic sample. The sample is designed to impose a passively-evolving luminosity and rest-frame color cut to a redshift of 0.38. Additional, yet more luminous, red galaxies are included to a redshift of 0.5. Approximately 12 of these galaxies per square degree are targeted for spectroscopy, so the sample will number over 100,000 with the full survey. SDSS commissioning data indicate that the algorithm efficiently selects luminous (M_g=-21.4), red galaxies, that the spectroscopic success rate is very high, and that the resulting set of galaxies is approximately volume-limited out to z=0.38. When the SDSS is complete, the LRG spectroscopic sample will fill over 1h^-3 Gpc^3 with an approximately homogeneous population of galaxies and will therefore be well suited to studies of large-scale structure and clusters out to z=0.5.

Hybrid Quarkonia with Dynamical Sea Quarks

We present a dynamical lattice calculation with 2 flavours for bottomonium states with an additional gluonic excitation. Using improved actions for the quarks and gauge fields at a lattice spacing of $a \approx 0.1$ fm, we find 10.977(61)(62) GeV for the energy of the lowest lying $b\bar bg$-hybrid, where the first error is statistical and the second denotes the systematic uncertainty due to the determination of scale. In a parallel quenched simulation we demonstrate explicitly that vacuum polarisation effects are less than 10% of the splitting with the ground state.

B meson decay constant from two-flavor lattice QCD with non-relativistic heavy quarks

We present a study of leptonic $B$ meson decay constants in lattice QCD with two flavors ($N_f=2$) of light dynamical quarks using NRQCD for the heavy quark. Gauge configurations are generated with a renormalization-group improved gauge action and a meanfield-improved clover light quark action. Measurements are carried out at two values of $β=6/g^2$, each for four sea quark masses, corresponding to the inverse lattice spacing $a^{-1}\approx 1.3$ and 1.8 GeV in the chiral limit of sea quark. The continuum values of the decay constants are derived by evaluating the discretization errors at each finite lattice spacing. We find $f_B^{N_f=2}=204(8)(29)(+44) $ MeV, $f_{B_s}^{N_f=2} = 242(9)(34)(+38)$ MeV, and $f_{B_s}^{N_f=2}/f_B^{N_f=2} = 1.179(18)(23)$, where the errors listed are statistical, systematic and uncertainty due to choice of the physical quantity used to fix the scale. Comparison is made to quenched results ($N_f=0$) obtained with the same action combination and matching lattice spacings. We find $f_B^{N_f=2}/f_B^{N_f=0}=1.07(5)$, $f_{B_s}^{N_f=2}/f_{B_s}^{N_f=0}=1.10(5)$ and $(f_{B_s}/f_B)^{N_f=2}/(f_{B_s}/f_B)^{N_f=0}=1.03(2)$, which indicates a 5--10% increase in the values of the decay constants, but no appreciable change in the ratio $f_{B_s}/f_B$, due to sea quarks.

Lepton Flavour Mixing Matrix and CP Violation from Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

The measurement of the charged-current 8B solar neutrino reaction on deuterium at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory confirms the neutrino oscillation hypothesis for the solar neutrino problem, and the result favours the solution with large neutrino mixing angles. We demonstrate that the current neutrino oscillation data (including atmospheric and reactor neutrinos) are sufficient to construct the lepton flavour mixing matrix with a reasonable accuracy. We also infer the maximum size of CP violation effects consistent with the current neutrino oscillation experiments.

Thermodynamics of SU(3) gauge theory on anisotropic lattices

Finite temperature SU(3) gauge theory is studied on anisotropic lattices using the standard plaquette gauge action. The equation of state is calculated on $16^{3} \times 8$, $20^{3} \times 10$ and $24^{3} \times 12$ lattices with the anisotropy $ξ\equiv a_s / a_t = 2$, where $a_s$ and $a_t$ are the spatial and temporal lattice spacings. Unlike the case of the isotropic lattice on which $N_t=4$ data deviate significantly from the leading scaling behavior, the pressure and energy density on an anisotropic lattice are found to satisfy well the leading $1/N_t^2$ scaling from our coarsest lattice, $N_t/ξ=4$. With three data points at $N_t/ξ=4$, 5 and 6, we perform a well controlled continuum extrapolation of the equation of state. Our results in the continuum limit agree with a previous result from isotropic lattices using the same action, but have smaller and more reliable errors.
