Quenched QCD with domain-wall fermions on coarse lattices

We investigate the existence of chiral zero modes at a^{-1} \simeq 1 GeV in quenched domain-wall QCD. Simulations are carried out for the plaquette and an RG-improved gauge actions on a 12^3x24xN_s lattice with N_s=10-50. We find that the pion mass in the chiral limit remains non-vanishing as N_s\to\infty for both gauge actions. Possible origins of this non-vanishing pion mass are discussed.

Eta meson mass and topology in QCD with two light flavors

We present results for the mass of the flavor singlet meson calculated on two-flavor full QCD configurations generated by the CP-PACS full QCD project. We also investigate topological charge fluctuations and their dependence on the sea quark mass.

Hybrid Quarkonia on Asymmetric Lattices

We report on a study of heavy hybrid states using the NRQCD approach on coarse and asymmetric lattices, where we discard vacuum polarisation effects and neglect all spin-correction terms. We find a clear hybrid signal on all our lattices ($a_s= 0.15 ... 0.47$ fm). We have studied in detail the lattice spacing artefacts, finite volume effects and mass dependence. Within the above approximations we predict the hybrid excitation in Charmonium to be 1.323(13) GeV above its ground state. The bottomonium hybrid was found to be 1.542(8) GeV above its ground state.

A Galaxy X-ray Fundamental Plane?

We suggest the radii and luminosities of the X-ray emitting halos of elliptical galaxies define a fundamental plane with the star velocity dispersions, as for the corresponding optical observables. Since the X-ray emitting material usually is at larger radius than the stars this can be interpreted as additional evidence for a relation between the space distributions of stellar and dark mass, in analogy to the Tully-Fisher relation and flat rotation curves for spiral galaxies. The picture is complicated, however, by ellipticals with relatively low X-ray luminosities that appear to have modest dark halos, quite unlike the standard picture for spirals.

B meson leptonic decay constant with quenched lattice NRQCD

We present a lattice NRQCD study of the B meson decay constant in the quenched approximation with emphasis given to the scaling behavior. The NRQCD action and the heavy-light axial current we use include all terms of order 1/M and the perturbative $O(α_s a)$ and $O(α_s/M)$ corrections. Using simulations at three value of couplings $β$=5.7, 5.9 and 6.1 on lattices of size $12^3\times 32, 16^3\times 48$ and $24^3\times 64$, we find no significant $a$ dependence in $f_B$ if the $O(α_s a)$ correction is included in the axial current. We obtain $f_B = 167(7)(15)$ MeV, $f_{B_s}= 191(4)(17)(^{+4}_{-0})$ MeV and $f_{B_s}/f_B =1.15(3)(1)(^{+3}_{-0})$, with the first error being statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to uncertainty of strange quark mass, while quenching errors being not included.

Quenched Light Hadron Spectrum

We present results of a large-scale simulation for the flavor non-singlet light hadron spectrum in quenched lattice QCD with the Wilson quark action. Hadron masses are calculated at four values of lattice spacing in the range $a \approx$ 0.1 - 0.05 fm on lattices with a physical extent of 3 fm at five quark masses corresponding to $m_π/m_ρ\approx 0.75$ - 0.4. The calculated spectrum in the continuum limit shows a systematic deviation from experiment, though the magnitude of deviation is contained within 11%. Results for decay constants and light quark masses are also reported.

The Kaon B-parameter with the Wilson Quark Action using Chiral Ward Identities

A lattice QCD calculation of the kaon $B$ parameter $B_K$ is carried out with the Wilson quark action in the quenched approximation at $β=6/g^2=5.9-6.5$. The mixing problem of the $Δs=2$ four-quark operators is solved non-perturbatively with full use of chiral Ward identities employing four external quarks with an equal off-shell momentum in the Landau gauge. This method, without invoking any effective theory, enables us to construct the weak four-quark operators exhibiting good chiral behavior. Our results for $B_K$ with the non-perturbative mixing coefficients show small scaling violation beyond the lattice cut-off $a^{-1}\sim 2.5 $GeV. Our estimate concludes $B_K(NDR, 2 GeV)=0.69(7)$ at $a^{-1}=2.7-4.3$GeV, which agrees with the value obtained with the Kogut-Susskind quark action. For comparison we also calculate $B_K$ with one-loop perturbative mixing coefficients. While this yields incorrect values at finite lattice spacing, a linear extrapolation to the continuum limit as a function of $a$ leads to a result consistent with those obtained with the Ward identity method.

Prediction of the CP violation in the Phenomenological Quark-Lepton Mass Matrix Approach

We explore the phenomenological quark-lepton mass matrices, which are devised following the S$_3$ flavour symmetry principle, yet fully consistent with SU(5) gauge models with the Higgs particles of {\bf 5}, {\bf 45} and their conjugates. The model contains 10 free parameters altogether. When 6 parameters are fixed by charge 2/3 quark and charged lepton masses, charge($-$1/3) quark masses and all quark mixing matrix elements are predicted to be close to experiment, leaving some narrow ranges still as freedom. Further specification of 3 more parameters (using, $m_d$, Cabibbo angle and $|V_{cb}|$) suffices to fix the quark mixing matrix nearly completely, and all elements come out to be in accurate agreement with experiment. We obtain the CP violation phase as a prediction.

Non-perturbative determination of quark masses in quenched lattice QCD with the Kogut-Susskind fermion action

We report results of quark masses in quenched lattice QCD with the Kogut-Susskind fermion action, employing the Reguralization Independent scheme (RI) of Martinelli et al. to non-perturbatively evaluate the renormalization factor relating the bare quark mass on the lattice to that in the continuum. Calculations are carried out at β=6.0, 6.2, and 6.4, from which we find $m^{\bar{MS}}_{ud} (2 GeV)= 4.23(29) MeV$ for the average up and down quark mass and, with the $ϕ$ meson mass as input, $m^{\bar{MS}}_{s} (2 GeV)= 129(12) MeV$ for the strange mass in the continuum limit. These values are about 20% larger than those obtained with the one-loop perturbative renormalization factor.

The static quark potential in full QCD

We report results on the static quark potential in two-flavor full QCD. The calculation is performed for three values of lattice spacing $a^{-1}\approx 0.9, 1.3$ and 2.5 GeV on $12^3{\times}24, 16^3{\times}32$ and $24^3{\times}48$ lattices respectively, at sea quark masses corresponding to $m_π/m_ρ\approx 0.8-0.6$. An RG-improved gauge action and a tadpole-improved SW clover quark action are employed. We discuss scaling of $m_ρ/\sqrtσ$ and effects of dynamical quarks on the potential.

Embedding Phenomenological Quark-Lepton Mass Matrices into SU(5) Gauge Models

We construct phenomenological quark-lepton mass matrices based on S$_3$ permutation symmetry in a manner fully compatible with SU(5) grand unification. The Higgs particles we need are {\bf 5}, {\bf 45} and their conjugates. The model gives a charge $-$1/3 quark vs charged lepton mass relation, and also a good fit to mass-mixing relations for the quark sector, as well as an attractive mixing pattern for the lepton sector, explaining a large mixing angle between $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$, and either large or small $ν_e-ν_μ$ mixing angle, depending on the choice of couplings, consistent with the currently accepted solutions to the solar neutrino problem.

Hadron matrix elements for nucleon decay with the Wilson quark action

We report preliminary results of our study of matrix elements of baryon number violating operators which appear in the low-energy effective Lagrangian of (SUSY-)Grand Unified Theories. The calculation is performed on a $32^{3}\times80$ lattice at $β=6.1$ using Wilson fermions in the quenched approximation. Our calculation is independent of details of (SUSY-)GUT models and covers all interesting decay modes.

Scaling behavior of $f_{B}$ with NRQCD

We investigate the scaling behavior of the $B$ meson decay constant $f_B$ and $f_{B_{s}}$ at $β$$=$$5.7, 5.9, 6.1$, employing the NRQCD heavy quark action and the clover light quark action. Mixing effect from dimension-4 operator in the heavy-light axial-vector current is studied, and we find that the $a$ dependence of $f_B$ is significantly reduced. Our preliminary result for the decay constants in the quenched approximation is $f_{B}$$=$$162(^{+35}_{-18})$ MeV, $f_{B_{s}}$$=$$190(^{+40}_{-19})$ MeV, and $f_{B_{s}}/f_{B}$$=$$1.18(^{+6}_{-6})$.

Quenched Light Hadron Spectrum with the Wilson Quark Action: Final Results from CP-PACS

We report the final results of the CP-PACS calculation for the quenched light hadron spectrum with the Wilson quark action. Our data support the presence of quenched chiral singularities, and this motivates us to use mass formulae based on quenched chiral perturbation theory in order to extrapolate hadron masses to the physical point. Hadron masses and decay constants in the continuum limit show unambiguous systematic deviations from experiment. We also report the results for light quark masses.

Full QCD light hadron spectrum from the CP-PACS

We report on an on-going two-flavor full QCD study on CP-PACS using an RG-improved gauge action and a tadpole-improved SW quark action. Runs are made for three lattice spacings $a^{-1}\approx 0.9$, 1.3, and 2.5 GeV on $12^3\times24$, $16^3\times32$, and $24^3\times48$ lattices. Four sea quark masses having $m_{\rm PS}/m_{\rm V} \approx 0.8$--0.6 are simulated, for each of which hadron masses are evaluated for valence quark masses corresponding to $m_{\rm PS}/m_{\rm V} \approx 0.8$--0.5. Results for hadron and light quark masses are presented and compared with those obtained in quenched QCD.

Non-perturbative renormalization factors of bilinear quark operators for Kogut-Susskind fermions and light quark masses in quenched QCD

Light quark masses are computed for Kogut-Susskind fermions by evaluating non-perturbatively the renormalization factor for bilinear quark operators. Calculations are carried out in the quenched approximation at β=6.0, 6.2, and 6.4. For the average up and down quark mass we find $m_{\bar MS}(2 GeV)= 4.15(27) MeV$ in the continuum limit, which is significantly larger than $3.51(20) MeV$ ($q^*=1/a$) or $3.40(21) MeV$ ($q^*=π/a$) obtained with the one-loop perturbative renormalization factor.

Phase structure of lattice QCD at finite temperature for 2+1 flavors of Kogut-Susskind quarks

We report on a study of the finite-temperature chiral transition on an $N_t=4$ lattice for 2+1 flavors of Kogut-Susskind quarks. We find the point of physical quark masses to lie in the region of crossover, in agreement with results of previous studies. Results of a detailed examination of the $m_{u,d}=m_s$ case indicate vanishing of the screening mass of $σ$ meson at the end point of the first-order transition.

$K^{+}\toπ^{+}π^{0}$ Decay Amplitude with the Wilson Quark Action in Quenched Lattice QCD

We present a calculation for the $K^+\toπ^+ π^0 $ decay amplitude using a quenched simulation of lattice QCD with the Wilson quark action at $β=6/g^2=6.1$. The decay amplitude is extracted from the ratio, the $K\toππ$ three-point function divided by either $K$ and $π$ meson two-point functions or $K$ meson two-point function and I=2 $ππ$ four-point function; the two different methods yield consistent results. Finite size effects are examined with calculations made on $24^3\times 64$ and $32^3\times 64$ lattices, and are shown that they are explained by one-loop effects of chiral perturbation theory. The lattice amplitude is converted to the continuum value by employing a one-loop calculation of chiral perturbation theory, yielding a value in agreement with experiment if extrapolated to the chiral limit. We also report on the $K$ meson $B$ parameter $B_K$ obtained from the $K^+\toπ^+π^0$ amplitude using chiral perturbation theory.
