Metallicity estimates of young clusters in the Magellanic Clouds from Stromgren photometry of supergiant stars

We present results obtained from Stromgren photometry of 13 young (~30-220 Myr) Magellanic Cloud (MC) clusters, most of them lacking in the literature from direct metallicity measurements. We derived for them [Fe/H] values from a high-dispersion spectroscopy-based empirical calibration of the Stromgren metallicity sensitive index m1 for yellow and red supergiants (SGs). Particular care was given while estimating their respective uncertainties. In order to obtain the mean cluster metallicities, we used [Fe/H] values of selected SGs for which we required to be located within the cluster radii, placed in the expected SG region in the cluster colour-magnitude diagrams, and with [Fe/H] values within the FWHM of the observed cluster metallicity distributions. The resulting metallicities for nearly 75 per cent of the cluster sample agree well with the most frequently used values of the mean MCs' present-day metallicities. The remaining clusters have mean [Fe/H] values that fall near the edge of the MC present-day metallicity distributions. When comparing the cluster metallicities with their present positions, we found evidence that supports the claimed recent interaction of the MCs with the Milky Way, that could have caused that some clusters were scattered from their birthplaces. Indeed, we show examples of clusters with metal contents typical of the galaxy inner regions placed outward them. Likewise, we found young clusters, at present located in the inner regions of both MCs, formed out of gas that has remained unmixed since several Gyr ago.

The effect of metallicity on Cepheid Period-Luminosity relations from a Baade-Wesselink analysis of Cepheids in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds

The extragalactic distance scale builds on the Cepheid period-luminosity (PL) relation. In this paper, we want to carry out a strictly differential comparison of the absolute PL relations obeyed by classical Cepheids in the Milky Way (MW), LMC and SMC galaxies. Taking advantage of the substantial metallicity difference among the Cepheid populations in these three galaxies, we want to establish a possible systematic trend of the PL relation absolute zero point as a function of metallicity, and determine the size of such an effect in optical and near-infrared photometric bands. We are using the IRSB Baade-Wesselink type method as calibrated by Storm et al. to determine individual distances to the Cepheids in our samples in MW, LMC and SMC. For our analysis, we use a greatly enhanced sample of Cepheids in the SMC (31 stars) as compared to the small sample (5 stars) available in our previous work. We use the distances to determine absolute Cepheid PL relations in optical and near-infrared bands in each of the three galaxies.} {Our distance analysis of 31 SMC Cepheids with periods from 4-69 days yields tight PL relations in all studied bands, with slopes consistent with the corresponding LMC and MW relations. Adopting the very accurately determined LMC slopes for the optical and near-infrared bands, we determine the zero point offsets between the corresponding absolute PL relations in the 3 galaxies. We find that in all bands the metal-poor SMC Cepheids are intrinsically fainter than their more metal-rich counterparts in the LMC and MW. In the $K$ band the metallicity effect is $-0.23\pm0.06$~mag/dex while in the $V,(V-I)$ Wesenheit index it is slightly stronger, $-0.34\pm0.06$~mag/dex. We find some evidence that the PL relation zero point-metallicity relation might be nonlinear, becoming steeper for lower metallicities.

All-electric single electron spin-to-charge conversion

We examine spin-dependent displacement of a single electron, resulting in separation and relocation of the electron wavefunction components, and thus charge parts, corresponding to opposite spins. This separation is induced by a pulse of an electric field which generates varying Rashba type spin-orbit coupling. This mechanism is next implemented in a nanodevice based on a gated quantum dot defined within a quantum nanowire. The electric field pulse is generated by ultrafast changes of voltages, of the order of several hundred mV, applied to nearby gates. The device is modeled realistically with appropriate material parameters and voltages applied to the gates, yielding an accurate confinement potential and Rashba coupling. At the end, we propose a spin-to-charge conversion device, which with an additional charge detector will allow for electron spin state measurement.

The Araucaria Project: The distance to the Fornax Dwarf Galaxy from near-infrared photometry of RR Lyrae stars

We have obtained single-phase near-infrared (NIR) magnitudes in the J- and K-bands for 77 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars in the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy. We have used different theoretical and empirical NIR period-luminosity-metallicity calibrations for RRL stars to derive their absolute magnitudes, and found a true, reddening-corrected distance modulus of 20.818 +/- 0.015 (statistical) +/- 0.116 (systematic) mag. This value is in excellent agreement with the results obtained within the Araucaria Project from the NIR photometry of red clump stars (20.858 +/- 0.013 mag), the tip of the red giant branch (20.84 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.14 mag), as well as with other independent distance determinations to this galaxy. The effect of metallicity and reddening is substantially reduced in the NIR domain, making this method a robust tool for accurate distance determination at the 5 percent level. This precision is expected to reach the level of 3 percent once the zero points of distance calibrations are refined thanks to the Gaia mission. NIR period-luminosity-metallicity relations of RRL stars are particularly useful for distance determinations to galaxies and globular clusters up to 300 kpc, that lack young standard candles, like Cepheids.

All-electric single electron spin initialization

We propose a nanodevice for single-electron spin initialization. It is based on a gated planar semiconductor heterostructure with a quantum well and with potentials generated by voltages applied to local gates. Initially we insert an electron with arbitrary spin into the nanodevice. Next we perform a sequence of spin manipulations, after which the spin is set in a desired direction (e.g., the growth direction). The operations are done all-electrically, do not require any external fields and do not depend on the initial spin direction.

Generation of Schrödinger's cat states in a planar semiconductor heterostructure

We propose a nanodevice based on a typical planar semiconductor heterostructure with lateral confinement potential created by voltages applied to local electrodes. We show how to obtain near parabolical confinement along the nanodevice, and how to use coherent states of the harmonic oscillator for spatial separation of electron densities corresponding to opposite spin directions. In such a way, an entangled state of Schrödinger's cat type is created. We performed simulations of a realistic nanodevice model by numerical solving the time-dependent Schrödinger's equation together with simultaneous tracking of the controllable confinement potential via solution of the Poisson's equation at every time step.

The Araucaria Project: The distance to the Carina Dwarf Galaxy from infrared photometry of RR Lyrae stars

We obtained single-phase near-infrared (NIR) magnitudes in the $J$- and $K$-band for a sample of 33 RR Lyrae stars in the Carina dSph galaxy. Applying different theoretical and empirical calibrations of the NIR period-luminosity-metallicity relation for RR Lyrae stars, we find consistent results and obtain a true, reddening-corrected distance modulus of 20.118 $\pm$ 0.017 (statistical) $\pm$ 0.11 (systematic) mag. This value is in excellent agreement with the results obtained in the context of the Araucaria Project from NIR photometry of Red Clump stars (20.165 $\pm$ 0.015) and Tip of Red Giant Branch (20.09 $\pm$ 0.03 $\pm$ 0.12 mag in $J$-band, 20.14 $\pm$ 0.04 $\pm$ 0.14 mag in $K$-band), as well as with most independent distance determinations to this galaxy. The near-infrared RR Lyrae method proved to be a reliable tool for accurate distance determination at the 5 percent level or better, particularly for galaxies and globular clusters that lack young standard candles, like Cepheids.

The Araucaria Project. Accurate stellar parameters and distance to evolved eclipsing binary ASAS J180057-2333.8 in Sagittarius Arm

We have analyzed the double-lined eclipsing binary system ASAS J180057-2333.8 from the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) catalogue . We measure absolute physical and orbital parameters for this system based on archival $V$-band and $I$-band ASAS photometry, as well as on high-resolution spectroscopic data obtained with ESO 3.6m/HARPS and CORALIE spectrographs. The physical and orbital parameters of the system were derived with an accuracy of about 0.5 - 3%. The system is a very rare configuration of two bright well-detached giants of spectral types K1 and K4 and luminosity class II. The radii of the stars are $R_1$ = 52.12 $\pm$ 1.38 and $R_2$ = 67.63 $\pm$ 1.40 R$_\odot$ and their masses are $M_1$ = 4.914 $\pm$ 0.021 and $M_2$ = 4.875$\pm$ 0.021 M$_\odot$ . The exquisite accuracy of 0.5% obtained for the masses of the components is one of the best mass determinations for giants. We derived a precise distance to the system of 2.14 $\pm$ 0.06 kpc (stat.) $\pm$ 0.05 (syst.) which places the star in the Sagittarius-Carina arm. The Galactic rotational velocity of the star is $Θ_s=258 \pm 26$ km s$^{-1}$ assuming $Θ_0=238$ km s$^{-1}$. A comparison with PARSEC isochrones places the system at the early phase of core helium burning with an age of slightly larger than 100 million years. The effect of overshooting on stellar evolutionary tracks was explored using the MESA star code.

An eclipsing binary distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud accurate to 2 per cent

In the era of precision cosmology it is essential to determine the Hubble Constant with an accuracy of 3% or better. Currently, its uncertainty is dominated by the uncertainty in the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) which as the second nearest galaxy serves as the best anchor point of the cosmic distance scale. Observations of eclipsing binaries offer a unique opportunity to precisely and accurately measure stellar parameters and distances. The eclipsing binary method was previously applied to the LMC but the accuracy of the distance results was hampered by the need to model the bright, early-type systems used in these studies. Here, we present distance determinations to eight long-period, late- type eclipsing systems in the LMC composed of cool giant stars. For such systems we can accurately measure both the linear and angular sizes of their components and avoid the most important problems related to the hot early-type systems. Our LMC distance derived from these systems is demonstrably accurate to 2.2 % (49.97 +/- 0.19 (statistical) +/- 1.11 (systematic) kpc) providing a firm base for a 3 % determination of the Hubble Constant, with prospects for improvement to 2 % in the future.
