Formation of Plasmon-Polariton Pulses in the Cooperative Decay of Excitons of Quantum Dots Near a Metal Surface

The formation of pulses of surface electromagnetic waves in a metal/dielectric interface is considered in the process of cooperative decay of excitons of quantum dots distributed near a metal surface in a dielectric layer. It is shown that the efficiency of exciton energy transfer to excited plasmons can be increased by selecting the dielectric material with specified values of the complex permittivity. It is found that in the mean field approximation the semiclassical model of formation of plasmon pulses in the system under study is reduced to the pendulum equation with the additional term of nonlinear losses.

Single-molecule spectromicroscopy: the door into sub-diffraction refractometry

We suggest a novel approach for probing of local fluctuations of the refractive index $n$ in solids by means of single-molecule (SM) spectroscopy. It is based on the dependence $T_1(n)$ of the effective radiative lifetime $T_1$ of dye centres in solids on $n$ due to the local field effects. Detection of SM zero-phonon lines at ultra-low temperatures gives the values of SM natural spectral linewidth (which is inverse proportional to $T_1$) and makes it possible to reveal the distribution of the local $n$ values in solids. Here we demonstrate this possibility on the example of amorphous polyethylene and polycrystalline naphthalene doped with terrylene.

Noise-induced topological transformations of vortex solitons in optical fibers filled with a cold atomic gas

We consider the influence of optical and temperature-dependent atomic fluctuations on the formation and propagation of optical vortex solitons in dense media realized as hollow-core optical fibers filled with a cold atomic gas in presence of optical pumping. We show different perturbation-induced scenaria of complete destruction and smooth transformations of the topological characteristics of localized optical structures in hollow-core fiber. The maximum levels of optical and atomic fluctuations at which the soliton regime can be maintained has been determined. The estimates for these levels show an opportunity to observe the optical vortex solitions in the core-filling gas of the fiber for temperatures smaller than the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensate.

Dynamical instabilities of spectroscopic transitions in dense resonant media

We consider the influence of the near dipole-dipole interaction, underlying the local field, on the dynamics of two-level and V-type three-level atoms exposed to cw-laser radiation. The dipole-dipole interaction between the V-type three-level atoms is shown to give rise to the Poincaré-Andronov-Hopf bifurcation in steady-state solution of the equations of motion. As a result, the populations of the energy levels periodically vary in time. In the framework of the two-level model, dynamical instabilities are proved to be impossible.

Enhancement of fusion rates due to quantum effects in the particles momentum distribution in nonideal media

This study concerns a situation when measurements of the nonresonant cross-section of nuclear reactions appear highly dependent on the environment in which the particles interact. An appealing example discussed in the paper is the interaction of a deuteron beam with a target of deuterated metal Ta. In these experiments, the reaction cross section for d(d,p)t was shown to be orders of magnitude greater than what the conventional model predicts for the low-energy particles. In this paper we take into account the influence of quantum effects due to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle for particles in a non-ideal medium elastically interacting with the medium particles. In order to calculate the nuclear reaction rate in the non-ideal environment we apply both the Monte Carlo technique and approximate analytical calculation of the Feynman diagram using nonrelativistic kinetic Green's functions in the medium which correspond to the generalized energy and momentum distribution functions of interacting particles. We show a possibility to reduce the 12-fold integral corresponding to this diagram to a fivefold integral. This can significantly speed up the computation and control accuracy. Our calculations show that quantum effects significantly influence reaction rates such as p +7Be, 3He +4He, p +7Li, and 12C +12C. The new reaction rates may be much higher than the classical ones for the interior of the Sun and supernova stars. The possibility to observe the theoretical predictions under laboratory conditions is discussed.

Quantum interference and local field effects in a medium of V-type three-level atoms

We study the intrinsic optical bistability displayed by a small sample of $V$-type three-level atoms induced by the near dipole-dipole interaction. The use of the coherent state properties in the limit of the generalized second-order Born approximation for BBGKY-hierarchy of equations for the reduced density operators allows one to derive the operator describing the near dipole-dipole interaction (local field correction) with interference terms involving no additional assumptions. The dynamics of populations of the excited states and the total spontaneous intensity are analysed as functions of the external laser field strength allowing for the off-diagonal structure of the local field and relaxation operators.

Emission spectra and intrinsic optical bistability in a two-level medium

Scattering of resonant radiation in a dense two-level medium is studied theoretically with account for local field effects and renormalization of the resonance frequency. Intrinsic optical bistability is viewed as switching between different spectral patterns of fluorescent light controlled by the incident field strength. Response spectra are calculated analytically for the entire hysteresis loop of atomic excitation. The equations to describe the non-linear interaction of an atomic ensemble with light are derived from the Bogolubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchy for reduced single particle density matrices of atoms and quantized field modes and their correlation operators. The spectral power of scattered light with separated coherent and incoherent constituents is obtained straightforwardly within the hierarchy. The formula obtained for emission spectra can be used to distinguish between possible mechanisms suggested to produce intrinsic bistability.

Local field effects and multimode stimulated light scattering in a two-level medium

Scattering of a short (much shorter then the spontaneous lifetime) laser pulse has been considered in a dense resonant medium subject to local field effects. The system was studied in the limit of Hartree-Fock approximation for Bogolubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) hierarchy of equations for reduced density operators. A closed set of equations for atomic and field density operators was derived to describe stimulated scattering of radiation. Numerically as well as theoretically the capability of multicomponent spectrum with maximums multiple to Rabi frequency has been demonstrated. Relative line intensities in the spectrum were found in the limit of low density.
