Antiferromagnetic order and lattice response in DyCuAs$_2$

We report high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) studies of the low-temperature crystal and magnetic structures of DyCuAs$_2$, a member of the \RE{}CuAs$_2$ family exhibiting a resistivity minimum above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature. Synchrotron diffraction measurements reveal that DyCuAs$_2$ preserves tetragonal symmetry down to low temperature within the experimental resolution, although pronounced anomalies in both lattice parameters $a$ and $c$ are observed near the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, $T_{\mathrm N}\approx7$~K, indicating strong magnetoelastic coupling. XRMS measurements at the Dy $L_3$ edge establish commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_{\mathrm N}$ with AFM Bragg peaks at \qq{} = (0, 0, 0.5). Representation analysis and calculations of the AFM Bragg peak intensities identify the magnetic structure as the $\Gamma_{10}$ representation, consisting of in-plane Dy moments stacked along the \cc{} axis in a $++--$ sequence. The magnetic structure is therefore identical to that previously reported for SmCuAs$_2$. Comparison among DyCuAs$_2$, SmCuAs$_2$, and GdCuAs$_2$ suggests that in-plane AFM order and the associated magnetic frustration on the tetragonal lattice are closely connected to the emergence of the resistivity minimum in the \RE{}CuAs$_2$ family. At the same time, the enhanced lattice response and stronger magnetic-field sensitivity observed in DyCuAs$_2$ imply that magnetoelastic and spin-orbit interactions additionally play important roles in determining the robustness of this anomalous transport behavior.

Fresnel diffraction imaging of surface nanostructure using coherent resonant X-ray scattering

We investigated surface nanostructures on an antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ using a novel imaging technique, direct (real)-space and real time coherent X-ray imaging (direct-CXI). This technique has provided new insights into antiferromagnetic textures, including the formation of anti-phase antiferromagnetic (AFM) domains and thermal dynamics of AFM domains and domain walls. While this method produces real-space images of AFM textures without requiring a complex imaging retrieval process, its underlying imaging mechanism has not been fully understood, limiting a deep understanding of AFM textures and the information they contain. By investigating the well-defined structural characteristics of the nanostructures fabricated on MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, we elucidate the imaging principle of this novel technique. We find that the observed images can be well explained by Fresnel diffraction integral. Using a simple model from classical optics, our calculations successfully reproduce the experimentally observed images of the nanostructures. This demonstrates that direct-CXI not only provides straightforward real-space imaging but also contains phase information through its Fresnel diffraction integral.

Low temperature magnetic structure and lattice response in SmCuAs$_2$

We investigated the structural and magnetic properties of single-crystalline SmCuAs$_2$ using high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) at the Sm $L_2$ and $L_3$ edges. Temperature-dependent diffraction measurements confirm that SmCuAs$_2$ maintains its tetragonal symmetry from room temperature down to 8 K, with lattice parameters showing anomalous behavior below the resistivity minimum ($T \approx$ 30 K). Notably, the \textbf{c}-axis lattice parameter exhibits a plateau and subsequent increase near the N\'{e}el temperature, indicating magnetoelastic coupling. XRMS measurements reveal a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector \textbf{\textit{q}} = (0, 0, 0.5). Our measurement shows that the Sm moments are aligned within the \textbf{\textit{ab}} plane and arranged in a $++--$ stacking along the \textbf{\textit{c}}-axis. Comparison with related \textit{RE}CuAs$_2$ compounds (\textit{RE} = Pr, Nd, and Gd) suggests that in-plane moment orientation and associated magnetic frustration play a key role in the emergence of the resistivity minimum. Differences in spin-orbit and magnetoelastic coupling across the series highlight their importance in governing low-temperature transport behavior.

Dynamics and formation of antiferromagnetic textures in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ single crystal

We report coherent X-ray imaging of antiferromagnetic (AFM) domains and domain walls in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, an intrinsic AFM topological insulator. This technique enables direct visualization of domain morphology without reconstruction algorithms, allowing us to resolve antiphase domain walls as distinct dark lines arising from the A-type AFM structure. The wall width is determined to be 550(30) nm, in good agreement with earlier magnetic force microscopy results. The temperature dependence of the AFM order parameter extracted from our images closely follows previous neutron scattering data. Remarkably, however, we find a pronounced hysteresis in the evolution of domains and domain walls: upon cooling, dynamic reorganizations occur within a narrow $\sim$1 K interval below $T_N$, whereas upon warming, the domain configuration remains largely unchanged until AFM order disappears. These findings reveal a complex energy landscape in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, governed by the interplay of exchange, anisotropy, and domain-wall energies, and underscore the critical role of AFM domain-wall dynamics in shaping its physical properties.

Spin-Liquid-Like State in Pure and Mn-Doped TbInO3 with Nearly Triangular Lattice

Inelastic neutron scattering studies in single crystals of TbInO3 and TbIn0.95Mn0.05O3 with nearly-triangular antiferromagnetic lattice are reported. At low energies, a broad and apparently gapless continuum of magnetic excitations, located at the triangular lattice (TL) Brillouin zone boundary, is observed. The data are well described by the uncorrelated nearest-neighbor valence bonds model. At higher energies, a broad excitation branch dispersing from the TL zone boundary is observed. No signs of static magnetic order are found down to the temperatures two orders of magnitude smaller than the effective interaction energy. The fluctuating magnetic moment exceeds two thirds of the Tb3+ free-ion value and is confined to the TL plane. These observations are consistent with a TL-based spin liquid state in TbInO3.

MIRIS observation of near-infrared diffuse Galactic light

We report near-infrared (IR) observations of high Galactic latitude clouds to investigate diffuse Galactic light (DGL), which is starlight scattered by interstellar dust grains. The observations were performed at $1.1$ and $1.6\,\rm{μm}$ with a wide-field camera instrument, the Multi-purpose Infra-Red Imaging System (MIRIS) onboard the Korean satellite STSAT-3. The DGL brightness is measured by correlating the near-IR images with a far-IR $100\,\rm{μm}$ map of interstellar dust thermal emission. The wide-field observation of DGL provides the most accurate DGL measurement achieved to date. We also find a linear correlation between optical and near-IR DGL in the MBM32 field. To study interstellar dust properties in MBM32, we adopt recent dust models with or without $\rm{μm}$-sized very large grains and predict the DGL spectra, taking into account reddening effect of interstellar radiation field. The result shows that observed color of the near-IR DGL is closer to the model spectra without very large grains. This may imply that dust growth in the observed MBM32 field is not active owing to its low density of interstellar medium.

Spitzer Observations of the North Ecliptic Pole

We present a photometric catalog for Spitzer Space Telescope warm mission observations of the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP; centered at $\rm R.A.=18^h00^m00^s$, $\rm Decl.=66^d33^m38^s.552$). The observations are conducted with IRAC in 3.6 $μ$m and 4.5 $μ$m bands over an area of 7.04 deg$^2$ reaching 1$σ$ depths of 1.29 $μ$Jy and 0.79 $μ$Jy in the 3.6 $μ$m and 4.5 $μ$m bands respectively. The photometric catalog contains 380,858 sources with 3.6 $μ$m and 4.5 $μ$m band photometry over the full-depth NEP mosaic. Point source completeness simulations show that the catalog is 80% complete down to 19.7 AB. The accompanying catalog can be utilized in constraining the physical properties of extra-galactic objects, studying the AGN population, measuring the infrared colors of stellar objects, and studying the extra-galactic infrared background light.

Experimental elucidation of the origin of the `double spin resonances' in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

We report a combined study of the spin resonances and superconducting gaps for underdoped ($T_c=19$ K), optimally doped ($T_c=25$ K), and overdoped ($T_c=19$ K) Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with inelastic neutron scattering and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find a quasi two dimensional spin resonance whose energy scales with the superconducting gap in all three compounds. In addition, anisotropic low energy spin excitation enhancements in the superconducting state have been deduced and characterized for the under and optimally doped compounds. Our data suggest that the quasi two dimensional spin resonance is a spin exciton that corresponds to the spin singlet-triplet excitations of the itinerant electrons. However, the intensity enhancements of the anisotropic spin excitations are dominated by the out-of-plane spin excitations of the ordered moments due to the suppression of damping in the superconducting state. Hence we offer a new interpretation of the double energy scales differing from previous interpretations based on anisotropic superconducting energy gaps, and systematically explain the doping-dependent trend across the phase diagram.

Structural and antiferromagnetic properties of Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_x$Rh$_y$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds

We present a systematic investigation of the electrical, structural, and antiferromagnetic properties for the series of Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_{x}$Rh$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds with fixed $x \approx$ 0.027 and $ 0 \leq y \leq 0.035$. We compare our results for the Co-Rh doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_{x}$Rh$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds with the Co doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds. We demonstrate that the electrical, structural, antiferromangetic, and superconducting properties of the Co-Rh doped compounds are similar to the properties of the Co doped compounds. We find that the overall behaviors of Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_{x}$Rh$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds are very similar when the total number of extra electrons per Fe/$TM$ ($TM$ = transition metal) site is considered, which is consistent with the rigid band model. Despite the similarity, we find that the details of the transitions, for example, the temperature difference between the structural and antiferromagnetic transition temperatures and the incommensurability of the antiferromangetic peaks, are different between Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_{x}$Rh$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds.

Spin dynamics near a putative antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in Cu substituted BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and its relation to high-temperature superconductivity

We present the results of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on non-superconducting Ba(Fe${_{0.957}}$Cu${_{0.043}}$)${_2}$As${_2}$, a composition close to a quantum critical point between AFM ordered and paramagnetic phases. By comparing these results with the spin fluctuations in the low Cu composition as well as the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and superconducting Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds, we demonstrate that paramagnon-like spin fluctuations are evident in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of Ba(Fe$_{0.957}$Cu$_{0.043}$)$_2$As$_2$, which is distinct from the AFM-like spin fluctuations in the superconducting compounds. Our observations suggest that Cu substitution decouples the interaction between quasiparticles and the spin fluctuations. We also show that the spin-spin correlation length, ${ξ(T)}$, increases rapidly as the temperature is lowered and find ${ω/T}$ scaling behavior, the hallmark of quantum criticality, at an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point.

Reanalysis of near-infrared extragalactic background light based on the IRTS observation

We reanalyze data of near-infrared background taken by Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS) based on up-to-date observational results of zodiacal light, integrated star light and diffuse Galactic light. We confirm the existence of residual isotropic emission, which is slightly lower but almost the same as previously reported. At wavelengths longer than 2 μm, the result is fairly consistent with the recent observation with AKARI. We also perform the same analysis using a different zodiacal light model by Wright and detected residual isotropic emission that is slightly lower than that based on the original Kelsall model. Both models show the residual isotropic emission that is significantly brighter than the integrated light of galaxies.

Measurements of the mean diffuse galactic light spectrum in the 0.95 μm to 1.65 μm band from CIBER

We report measurements of the Diffuse Galactic Light (DGL) spectrum in the near-infrared, spanning the wavelength range 0.95-1.65 μm by the Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER). Using the low-resolution spectrometer (LRS) calibrated for absolute spectro-photometry, we acquired long-slit spectral images of the total diffuse sky brightness towards four high-latitude fields spread over four sounding rocket flights. To separate the DGL spectrum from the total sky brightness, we correlated the spectral images with a 100 μm intensity map, which traces the dust column density in optically thin regions. The measured DGL spectrum shows no resolved features and is consistent with other DGL measurements in the optical and at near-infrared wavelengths longer than 1.8 μm. Our result implies that the continuum is consistently reproduced by models of scattered starlight in the Rayleigh scattering regime with a few large grains.

Crystal and Magnetic Structure of CaCo{1.86}As2 Studied by X-ray and Neutron Diffraction

Neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements are presented for powders and single crystals of CaCo{1.86}As2. The crystal structure is a collapsed-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure as previously reported, but with 7(1)% vacancies on the Co sites corresponding to the composition CaCo{1.86(2)}As2. The thermal expansion coefficients for both the a- and c-axes are positive from 10 to 300 K. Neutron diffraction measurements on single crystals demonstrate the onset of A-type collinear antiferromagnetic order below the Neel temperature TN = 52(1) K with the ordered moments directed along the tetragonal c-axis, aligned ferromagnetically in the ab-plane and antiferromagnetically stacked along the c-axis.

Crystallographic, Electronic, Thermal and Magnetic Properties of Single-Crystal SrCo2As2

In tetragonal SrCo2As2 single crystals, inelastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrated that strong stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations occur at a temperature T = 5 K [W. Jayasekara et al., arXiv:1306.5174] that are the same as in the isostructural AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) parent compounds of high-Tc superconductors. This surprising discovery suggests that SrCo2As2 may also be a good parent compound for high-Tc superconductivity. Here, structural and thermal expansion, electrical resistivity rho, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), heat capacity Cp, magnetic susceptibility chi, 75As NMR and neutron diffraction measurements of SrCo2As2 crystals are reported together with LDA band structure calculations that shed further light on this fascinating material. The c-axis thermal expansion coefficient alpha_c is negative from 7 to 300 K, whereas alpha_a is positive over this T range. The rho(T) shows metallic character. The ARPES measurements and band theory confirm the metallic character and in addition show the presence of a flat band near the Fermi energy E_F. The band calculations exhibit an extremely sharp peak in the density of states D(E_F) arising from a flat d_{x^2 - y^2} band. A comparison of the Sommerfeld coefficient of the electronic specific heat with chi(T = 0) suggests the presence of strong ferromagnetic itinerant spin correlations which on the basis of the Stoner criterion predicts that SrCo2As2 should be an itinerant ferromagnet, in conflict with the magnetization data. The chi(T) does have a large magnitude, but also exhibits a broad maximum at 115 K suggestive of dynamic short-range AFM spin correlations, in agreement with the neutron scattering data. The measurements show no evidence for any type of phase transition between 1.3 and 300 K and we propose that metallic SrCo2As2 has a gapless quantum spin-liquid ground state.

Spin polarization of Ru in superconducting Ba(Fe$_{0.795}$Ru$_{0.205}$)$_2$As$_2$ studied by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering

We have employed the x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) technique at the Ru $L_2$ edge of the Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x = 0.205$) superconductor. We show that pronounced resonance enhancements at the Ru $L_2$ edge are observed at the wave vector which is consistent with the antiferromagnetic propagation vector of the Fe in the undoped BaFe$_2$As$_2$. We also demonstrate that the XRMS signals at the Ru $L_2$ edge follow the magnetic ordering of the Fe with a long correlation length, $ξ_{ab} > 2850\pm400$ Å. Our experimental observation shows that the Ru is spin-polarized in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds.

The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER): the Narrow Band Spectrometer

We have developed a near-infrared spectrometer designed to measure the absolute intensity of the Solar 854.2 nm CaII Fraunhofer line, scattered by interplanetary dust, in the Zodiacal light spectrum. Based on the known equivalent line width in the Solar spectrum, this measurement can derive the Zodiacal brightness, testing models of the Zodiacal light based on morphology that are used to determine the extragalactic background light in absolute photometry measurements. The spectrometer is based on a simple high-resolution tipped filter placed in front of a compact camera with wide-field refractive optics to provide the large optical throughput and high sensitivity required for rocket-borne observations. We discuss the instrument requirements for an accurate measurement of the absolute Zodiacal light brightness, the measured laboratory characterization, and the instrument performance in flight.

Anisotropic transport and magnetic properties, and magnetic-field tuned states of CeZn11 single crystals

We present detailed temperature and field dependent data obtained from magnetization, resistivity, heat capacity, Hall resistivity and thermoelectric power measurements performed on single crystals of CeZn11. The compounds orders antiferromagnetically at $\sim$ 2 K. The zero-field resistivity and TEP data show features characteristic of a Ce-based intermetallic with crystal electric field splitting and possible correlated, Kondo lattice effects. We constructed the T-H phase diagram for the magnetic field applied along the easy, [110], direction which shows that the magnetic field required to suppress T_N below 0.4 K is in the range of 45-47.5 kOe. A linear behavior of the rho(T) data, H||[110], was observed only for H=45 kOe for 0.46 K<T<1.96 K followed by the Landau-Fermi-liquid regime for a limited range of fields, 47.5 kOe< H<60 kOe. From the analysis of our data, it appears that CeZn11 is a weakly to moderately correlated local moment compound with rather small Kondo temperature. The thermoelectric and transport properties of CeZn11 are mostly governed by the CEF effects. Given the very high quality of our single crystals, quantum oscillations are found for both CeZn11 and its non-magnetic analogue, LaZn11.

Magnonlike dispersion of spin resonance in Ni-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ba(Fe$_{0.963}$Ni$_{0.037}$)$_2$As$_2$ manifest a neutron spin resonance in the superconducting state with anisotropic dispersion within the Fe layer. Whereas the resonance is sharply peaked at Q$_{AFM}$ along the orthorhombic a axis, the resonance disperses upwards away from Q$_{AFM}$ along the b axis. In contrast to the downward dispersing resonance and hour-glass shape of the spin excitations in superconducting cuprates, the resonance in electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ compounds possesses a magnon-like upwards dispersion.
