Dynamics of diffractive dissociation

We describe a QCD based model which incorporates the main properties of the inclusive particle distributions expected for diffractive processes, including the diffractive dissociation at high energies. We study, in turn, the total cross section, $σ_{tot}$, the differential elastic, $dσ_{el}/dt$, cross section, the dependence of the single proton dissociation cross section, $ξd^{SD}/dξ$, on the momentum fraction, $ξ= 1-x_L$, lost by the leading proton, the multiplicity distributions in inelastic (non-diffractive) collisions and in the processes of dissociation. Besides this we calculate the mean transverse momenta of the `wee partons' (secondaries) produced in the case of dissociation (that is in the processes with a large rapidity gap) and compare it with that in inelastic interactions.

Bethe phase variation due to a non-exponential nuclear amplitude and the possibility of using a $t$-dependent phase to determine the $ρ$-parameter from elastic scattering data

We evaluate the possible deviation (from the conventional Cahn's result) of the phase between the one-photon-exchange and the `nuclear' high energy $pp$ scattering amplitudes in a small $t\to 0$ region caused by a more complicated (not just $exp(Bt)$) behaviour of the nuclear amplitude. Furthermore we look at the possible role of the $t$-dependence of the $ρ(t) \equiv$ Real/Imaginary amplitude ratio. It turns out that both effects are rather small - much smaller than to have any influence on the experimental accuracy of $ρ(t=0)$ extracted from the elastic proton-proton scattering data.

Isolating the Odderon in central production in high energy $pA$ and $AA$ collisions

We study the rapidity dependence of the cross section on the rapidity of the central exclusive production cross sections of C-even mesons in $pA$ and $AA$ collisions, where $A$ is a heavy ion. We observe qualitatively different behaviour of the contributions arising from $γ$-Odderon and Pomeron-Pomeron fusion mechanisms. This can be used to extract the Odderon signal from the events of $f_2$ mesons exclusively produced in the forward region. Estimates, obtained using expected values of the Odderon cross section, indicate that the $γ$-Odderon contribution may exceed by a few times the Pomeron-induced background in Pb-Pb collisions. Moreover, the Odderon effect can be clearly seen in terms of the asymmetry in $pA$ and $AA$ collisions with the beam and target reversed. It is particularly interesting to note that the asymmetry for $γ$-Odderon fusion reaches its maximum value close to 1 in the forward direction, whereas the asymmetry for the Pomeron-Pomeron fusion contribution is small. The role of additional interactions of the $f_2$ meson with nucleons in the heavy ion, and also the contributions from secondary Reggeons, are estimated. The photon-Odderon contribution has a large normalisation uncertainty but the enhances cross-section in the forward region combined with a large asymmetry increases the chance of experimentally detecting the Odderon.

Bethe phase including proton excitations

We evaluate the contribution of inelastic intermediate states (such as $p\to N^*$ excitations) to the phase between the one-photon-exchange and the `nuclear' high energy $pp$ scattering amplitudes as $t\to 0$, caused by multiphoton diagrams. It turns out to be rather small - much smaller than to have any influence on the experimental accuracy of the measurements of $ρ$, defined to be the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward `nuclear' amplitude.

Exclusive production of heavy quarkonia as a probe of the low x and low scale gluon PDF

We discuss the exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction process, as measured recently at LHCb, as a means of constraining and ultimately determining the low $x$ and low $Q$ gluon PDF. The scale dependence of the theoretical prediction for this process is shown to be systematically improved via a taming of the known $\bar{\text{MS}}$ result, this amounts to resumming logarithmically enhanced small-$x$ terms and implementing a small-$Q$ power correction. The cross section level predictions allow the behaviour of the gluon PDF in the low $(x, Q)$ domain to be determined.

Comments on Global Parton Analyses

We discuss the causes which can limit the accuracy of the predictions based on the conventional PDFs when including in global parton analyses the data at moderate scales $μ$. The first is the existence of power corrections ${\cal O} (Q_0^2/μ^2)$ due to the double counting of contributions arising from the region below the input scale $Q_0$. The second concerns the possible inclusion of the BFKL re-summation of the $(α_s\ln (1/x))^n$ terms. The third is the treatment of the heavy-quark thresholds. We show how to include the heavy-quark masses ($m_h$ with $h=c,b,t$) in DGLAP evolution which provides the correct {\it smooth} behaviour through the threshold regions and how to subtract the low parton virtuality $|k^2|<Q^2_0$ contributions from the DIS and Drell-Yan NLO coefficient functions in order to avoid the double counting.

Searches for Dark Matter at the LHC in forward proton mode

We analyze in detail the LHC prospects at the center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV for charged electroweakino searches, decaying to leptons, in compressed supersymmetry scenarios, via exclusive photon-initiated pair production. This provides a potentially increased sensitivity in comparison to inclusive channels, where the background is often overwhelming. We pay particular attention to the challenges that such searches would face in the hostile high pile-up environment of the LHC, giving close consideration to the backgrounds that will be present. The signal we focus on is the exclusive production of same-flavour muon and electron pairs, with missing energy in the final state, and with two outgoing intact protons registered by the dedicated forward proton detectors installed in association with ATLAS and CMS. We present results for slepton masses of 120--300 GeV and slepton-neutralino mass splitting of 10-20 GeV, and find that the relevant backgrounds can be controlled to the level of the expected signal yields. The most significant such backgrounds are due to semi-exclusive lepton pair production at lower masses, with a proton produced in the initial proton dissociation system registering in the forward detectors, and from the coincidence of forward protons produced in pile-up events with an inclusive central event that mimics the signal. We also outline a range of potential methods to further suppress these backgrounds as well as to enlarge the signal yields.

Colliding Pomerons

We recall the main properties of inclusive particle distributions expected for Pomeron-proton and Pomeron-Pomeron interactions. Due to the small size of the Pomeron we expect larger transverse momenta of secondaries and a smaller probability of Multiple Interactions, that is a narrower multiplicity distribution. We propose to compare the spectra of secondaries produced in the Pomeron and the proton interactions in terms of the Feynman $x_F$ variable. The main difference should be observed for a relatively large $x_F$, that is near the edge of rapidity gaps. Such data offer the opportunity to illuminate the properties of the `soft' or `Regge' Pomeron, which drives the minimum-bias type of events in high energy $pp$ interactions. Besides this, there should be a good opportunity to observe a glueball in the Pomeron fragmentation region.

The fusion of hard and soft Pomerons: 3-jet diffractive production

We consider the central exclusive production of high $E_T$ jets $pp\to p+(X+{\rm dijet})+p$. In particular we study the possible contamination of the purely exclusive signal by semi-exclusive production where no other secondaries are emitted in one hemisphere, between the highest $E_T$ dijet and the recoil proton, while in the other hemisphere a third jet, plus possibly additional hadron activity, is allowed, but still separated from the incoming proton by a large rapidity gap. This process arising from the fusion of a hard and a soft Pomeron has not been considered before. It turns out that it gives a negligible contribution. %contamination, which was not known before the calculation. The calculation involves a careful treatment of the QCD colour structure of the amplitudes.

Small size sources of secondaries observed in pp-collisions via Bose-Einstein correlations at the LHC ATLAS experiment

Bose-Einstein correlations in proton-proton collisions at the LHC are well descried by the formula with two different scales. It is shown for the first time that the pions are produced by few small size sources distributed over a much larger area in impact parameter space occupied by the interaction amplitude. The dependence of the two radii obtained in this procedure on the charged particle density and the mean transverse momentum of the pion/hadron in the correlated pair are discussed.

Exclusive vector meson production in heavy ion collisions

We discuss the salient features of exclusive vector meson production in heavy ion collisions at LHC energies. Special attention is paid to the space-time picture of the process. We account for both coherent and incoherent contributions. The explicit quantitative predictions are given for the $ρ$-meson differential cross section in lead-lead collisions in different kinematical configurations relevant for the LHCb and ALICE experiments.

Exclusive LHC physics with heavy ions: SuperChic 3

We present results of the updated SuperChic 3 Monte Carlo event generator for central exclusive production. This extends the previous treatment of proton-proton collisions to include heavy ion (pA and AA) beams, for both photon and QCD-initiated production, the first time such a unified treatment of exclusive processes has been presented in a single generator. To achieve this we have developed a theory of the gap survival factor in heavy ion collisions, which allows us to derive some straightforward results about the $A$ scaling of the corresponding cross sections. We compare against the recent ATLAS and CMS measurements of light-by-light scattering at the LHC, in lead-lead collisions. We find that the background from QCD-initiated production is expected to be very small, in contrast to some earlier estimates. We also present results from new photon-initiated processes that can now be generated, namely the production of axion-like particles, monopole pairs and monopolium, top quark pair production, and the inclusion of $W$ loops in light-by-light scattering.

BFKL Pomeron and the survival factor

We consider the absorptive corrections and the rapidity gap survival factor which are necessary to provide the unitarization of the BFKL Pomeron. In particular we discuss the role of the enhanced screening diagrams.

Absorptive effects and power corrections in low $x$ DGLAP evolution

We address a long standing problem concerning the scale behaviour of parton densities in the low $x$, low $Q^2$ domain. We emphasize the important role of absorptive corrections at low $x$ and use knowledge of diffractive deep inelastic scattering to exclude the absorptive effect from conventional deep inelastic data. In this way we obtain a significantly different low $x$ behaviour of the gluon density, which is now much better described by linear DGLAP evolution. Accounting also for a second power correction, which arises from the freezing of $α_s$ at low $Q^2$, leads to an essentially flat behaviour of the low $x$ gluon density.

Searching for the Odderon in Ultraperipheral Proton--Ion Collisions at the LHC

We explore the possibility of observing Odderon exchange in proton--ion collisions at the LHC, via the ultraperipheral photoproduction of C-even mesons. As well as the signal, we consider in detail the principle backgrounds, due to QCD--initiated production (i.e. double Pomeron exchange) and $γγ$ fusion. We find that while the photon--initiated background is dominant at very small momentum transfer, this can be effectively removed by placing a reasonable cut on the transverse momentum of the produced meson. In the case of QCD--initiated production, we show this is in general strongly suppressed by the small probability of no additional particle production in the central detector, namely the survival factor. In some scenarios, this suppression is sufficient to permit the observation of Odderon exchange in Pb$-p$ collisions in a clean environment, or else to place bounds on this. We in addition identify the cases of $π^0$ and $η(548)$ production as particularly promising channels. Here, the QCD--initiated background is absent for $π^0$ due to isospin conservation and very small for $η(548)$ due to its dominantly flavour octet nature and odd parity.

Black disk radius constrained by unitarity

We argue that if the elastic proton-proton cross section increases with energy, the Froissart-like high energy behaviour of the elastic amplitude (which corresponds to a `black disk' of radius $R(s)=c\ln s-β\ln(\ln s)$) is the only possibility to satisfy the unitarity equation at each value of the impact parameter, $b$. Otherwise the cross section of events with Large Rapidity Gaps grows faster than the total cross section at the same $b$. That is, these `gap' events require {\it maximal} growth of the high-energy (asymptotic) cross section and of the interaction radius $R(s)$ in order to be consistent with unitarity.

Equilibrium of nuclear matter in QCD sum rules

We calculate the nucleon parameters in symmetric nuclear matter employing the QCD sum rules approach. We focus on the average energy per nucleon and study the equilibrium states of the matter. We treat the matter as a relativistic system of interacting nucleons. Assuming the dependence of the nucleon mass on the light quark mass $m_q$ to be more important than that of nucleon interactions we find that the contribution of the relativistic nucleons to the scalar quark condensate can be expressed as that caused by free nucleons at rest multiplied by the density dependent factor $F(ρ)$. We demonstrate that there are no equilibrium states while we include only the condensates with dimension $d \leq 3$. There are equilibrium states if we include the lowest order radiative corrections and the condensates with $d \leq 4$. They manifest themselves for the nucleon sigma term $σ_N >60$ MeV. Including the condensates with $ d \leq 6$ we find equilibrium states of nuclear matter for $σ_N> 41$ MeV. In all cases the equilibrium states are due to influence of the relativistic motion of the nucleons composing the matter on the scalar quark condensate.
