Pressure and interaction measure of the gluon plasma

We explore the thermodynamics of the gluon plasma in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory emerging from the non-trivial spatial dynamics of valence gluons. The lattice data suggest that these gluons interact with each other linearly at large spatial separations. At high temperatures, valence gluons should reproduce the pressure of the non-interacting Stefan-Boltzmann plasma along with the leading perturbative correction. These properties of valence gluons can be modeled in terms of the integral over their trajectories. We calculate such a world-line integral analytically and obtain the pressure and the interaction measure $(\varepsilon-3p)/T^4$ of the gluon plasma. Additionally, we account for the contributions of stochastic background fields to these thermodynamic quantities. The results turn out to be in a good agreement with the corresponding lattice data. In particular, the lattice-simulated peak of the interaction measure near the deconfinement critical temperature is reproduced.

Ultracold atomic quantum gases far from equilibrium

We calculate the time evolution of a far-from-equilibrium initial state of a non-relativistic ultracold Bose gas in one spatial dimension. The non-perturbative approximation scheme is based on a systematic expansion of the two-particle irreducible effective action in powers of the inverse number of field components. This yields dynamic equations which contain direct scattering, memory and off-shell effects that are not captured in mean-field theory.

MSSM Electroweak Baryogenesis and Flavour Mixing in Transport Equations

We make use of the formalism developed in Ref. [1], and calculate the chargino mediated baryogenesis in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The formalism makes use of a gradient expansion of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for mixing fermions. For illustrative purposes, we first discuss the semiclassical transport equations for mixing bosons in a space-time dependent Higgs background. To calculate the baryon asymmetry, we solve a standard set of diffusion equations, according to which the chargino asymmetry is transported to the top sector, where it biases sphaleron transitions. At the end we make a qualitative and quantitative comparison of our results with the existing work. We find that the production of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe by CP-violating currents in the chargino sector is strongly constrained by measurements of electric dipole moments.

Radion stabilization with(out) Gauss-Bonnet interactions and inflation

Radion stabilization is analyzed in 5-dimensional models with branes in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet interactions. The Goldberger-Wise mechanism is considered for static and inflating backgrounds. The necessary and sufficient conditions for stability are given for the static case. The influence of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the radion mass and the inter-brane distance is analyzed and illustrated by numerical examples. The interplay between the radion stabilization and the cosmological constant problem is discussed.

Transport equations for chiral fermions to order \hbar and electroweak baryogenesis: Part II

This is the second in a series of two papers. While in Paper I we derive semiclassical Boltzmann transport equations and study their flow terms, here we address the collision terms. We use a model Lagrangean, in which fermions couple to scalars through Yukawa interactions and approximate the self-energies by the one-loop expressions. This approximation already contains important aspects of thermalization and scatterings required for quantitative studies of transport in plasmas. We compute the CP-violating contributions to both the scalar and the fermionic collision term.

Transport equations for chiral fermions to order \hbar and electroweak baryogenesis: Part I

This is the first in a series of two papers. We use the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism to derive semiclassical Boltzmann transport equations for massive chiral fermions and scalar particles. Our considerations include complex mass terms and mixing fermion and scalar fields, such that CP-violation is naturally included, rendering the equations particularly suitable for studies of baryogenesis at a first order electroweak phase transition. In part II we discuss the collision terms.

Supersymmetric Models For Gauge Inflation

We present possible realizations of gauge inflation arising from a 5D ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric U(1) model, where the extra dimension is compactified on a circle. A one-loop inflaton effective 4D potential is generated, with the inflaton being a 'Wilson-line field'. It relies on a SUSY breaking. We first consider SUSY breaking to occur spontaneously within a 'no-scale' model by a non zero $F$-term of the radion superfield which transmits SUSY breaking into the 'visible' sector. As an alternative, we study $D$-term SUSY breaking originating directly from the 5D gauge supermultiplet. Together with the usual KK resummation method, we present a calculation with the world-line formalism. The latter allows one to get the resulting effective potential directly as a sum over all winding modes. For both presented scenarios, the generated effective potentials have suitable forms for realizing successful inflation, i.e. are flat enough and give the needed number of ${\rm e}$-foldings. In addition, there is a natural way to get strongly suppressed values for the potentials, which then could be associated with dark energy/quintessence.

Do Stops Slow Down Electroweak Bubble Walls?

We compute the wall velocity in the MSSM. We therefore generalize the SM equations of motion for bubble walls moving through a hot plasma at the electroweak phase transition and calculate the friction terms which describe the viscosity of the plasma. We give the general expressions and apply them to a simple model where stops, tops and W bosons contribute to the friction. In a wide range of parameters including those which fulfil the requirements of baryogenesis we find a wall velocity of order v = 0.05-0.1 much below the SM value.

Bubble Walls, CP Violation and Electroweak Baryogenesis in the MSSM

We discuss the generation of the baryon asymmetry by a strong first order electroweak phase transition in the early universe, particularly in the context of the MSSM. This requires a thorough numerical treatment of the bubble wall profile in the case of two Higgs fields. CP violating complex particle masses varying with the Higgs field in the wall are essential. Since in the MSSM there is no indication of spontaneous CP violation around the critical temperature (contrary to the NMSSM) we have to rely on standard explicit CP violation. Using the WKB approximation for particles in the plasma we are led to Boltzmann transport equations for the difference of left-handed particles and their CP conjugates. This asymmetry is finally transformed into a baryon asymmetry by out of equilibrium sphaleron transitions in the symmetric phase. We solve the transport equations and find a baryon asymmetry depending mostly on the CP violating phases and the wall velocity.

Wall Velocity in the MSSM

We compute the wall velocity in the MSSM with W, tops and stops contributing to the friction. In a wide range of parameters including those which fulfil the requirements of baryogenesis we find a wall velocity of order v_w=O(0.01) much below the SM value.

CP Violating Bubble Wall Profiles

We solve the equations of motion for a CP violating phase between the two Higgs doublets at the bubble wall of the MSSM electroweak phase transition. Contrary to earlier suggestions, we do not find indications of spontaneous ``transitional'' CP violation in the MSSM. On the other hand, in case there is explicit CP violation in the stop and chargino/neutralino sectors, the relative phase between the Higgses does become space dependent, but only mildly even in the maximal case. We also demonstrate that spontaneous CP violation within the bubble wall could occur, e.g., if the Higgs sector of the MSSM were supplemented by a singlet. Finally we point out some implications for baryogenesis computations.

Bosonic Preheating in Left-Right-Symmetric SUSY GUTs

We investigate the possibility of a bosonic preheating in the simplest model of supersymmetric Hybridinflation (F-term inflation), which was considered first by Dvali et al. Here the inflationary superpotential is of the O'Raifertaigh-Witten type. The end of inflation is related to a non-thermal phase transition, which in the context of left-right symmetric models lowers the rank of the gauge group. Using the homogeneous classical field ansatz for the appearing condensates, our results indicate that the parametric creation of bosonic particles does not occure in the model under consideration.

A Tachyonic Gluon Mass: Between Infrared and Ultraviolet

The gluon spin coupling to a Gaussian correlated background gauge field induces an effective tachyonic gluon mass. It is momentum dependent and vanishes in the UV only like 1/p^2. In the IR, we obtain stabilization through a positive m^2_{conf}(p^2) related to confinement. Recently a purely phenomenological tachyonic gluon mass was used to explain the linear rise in the q\bar q static potential at small distances and also some long standing discrepancies found in QCD sum rules. We show that the stochastic vacuum model of QCD predicts a gluon mass with the desired properties.

Nonperturbative Contributions to the Hot Electroweak Potential

The hot electroweak potential for small Higgs field values is argued to obtain contributions from a fluctuating gauge field background leading to confinement. The destabilization of F^2=0 and the crossover are discussed in our phenomenological approach, also based on lattice data.

Phase Transitions in the Early Universe (Is there a Strongly First Order Electroweak Phase Transition?)

After some introductory remarks about the prospects of first order phase transitions in the early universe, we discuss in some detail the electroweak phase transition. In the standard model case a clear picture is arising including perturbative and nonperturbative effects. Since in this case the phase transition is not strongly first order as needed for baryogenesis, we discuss supersymmetric variants of the standard model, the MSSM with a light stop$_R$ and a NMSSM model where this can be achieved. We conclude with some remarks about the technical procedure and about possible effects of a strongly first order electroweak phase transition including baryogenesis.

Nonperturbative Contributions to the Hot Electroweak Potential and the Crossover

We discuss nonperturbative contributions to the 3-dimensional one-loop effective potential of the electroweak theory at high temperatures in the framework of the stochastic vacuum model. It assumes a gauge-field background with Gaussian correlations which leads to confinement. The instability of =0 in Yang-Mills theory appears for small Higgs expectation value <ϕ^2> in an IR regularized form. The gauge boson propagator obtains a positive momentum-dependent ``diamagnetic'' effective (mass)^2 due to confinement effects and a negative one due to ``paramagnetic'' spin-spin interactions which are related to the =0 instability. Numerical evaluation of an approximate effective potential containing these masses shows qualitatively the fading away of the first-order phase transition with increasing Higgs mass which was observed in lattice calculations. The crossover point can be roughly determined postulating that the effective ϕ^4 and ϕ^2 terms vanish there.

The Higher Derivative Expansion of the Effective Action by the String Inspired Method. Part II

We apply the string inspired worldline formalism to the calculation of the higher derivative expansion of one-loop effective actions in non-Abelian gauge theory. For this purpose, we have completely computerized the method, using the symbolic manipulation programs FORM, PERL and M. Explicit results are given to sixth order in the inverse mass expansion, reduced to a minimal basis of invariants specifically adapted to the method. Detailed comparisons are made with other gauge-invariant algorithms for calculating the same expansion. This includes an explicit check of all coefficients up to fifth order.
