Momentum dependence and nodes of the superconducting gap in iron-pnictides

We discuss the structure of the superconducting gap in iron pnictides. In the itinerant electron picture, gaps with or without nodes have the extended s-wave (s+) symmetry and emerge within the same pairing mechanism, determined by the interplay between intra-pocket repulsion and inter-band pair hopping. If the pair hopping is stronger, the system develops an s+ gap without nodes. In the opposite case the superconductivity is governed by of the momentum-dependent part of the pair-hopping, and an s+ gap shows nodes on electron Fermi surfaces. We argue that the gap without/with nodes emerges in systems with a stronger/weaker tendency towards a spin-density-wave order.

Superfluid density and penetration depth in Fe-pnictides

We consider the superfluid density $ρ_s (T)$ in a two-band superconductor with extended s-wave symmetry ($s^+$) in the presence of non-magnetic impurities and apply the results to Fe-pnictides. We show that the behavior of the superfluid density is essentially the same as in an ordinary s-wave superconductor with magnetic impurities. We show that, for moderate to strong inter-band impurity scattering, $ρ_s (T)$ behaves as a power-law $T^n$ with $n\approx 1.6\div2$ over a wide range of $T$. We argue that the power-law behavior is consistent with recent experiments on the penetration depth $λ(T)$ in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, but disagree quantitatively with the data on LaFePO.

Interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in Fe-pnictides

We consider phase transitions and potential co-existence of spin-density-wave (SDW) magnetic order and extended s-wave ($s^+$) superconducting order within a two-band itinerant model of iron pnictides, in which SDW magnetism and $s^+$ superconductivity are competing orders. We show that depending on parameters, the transition between these two states is either first order, or involves an intermediate phase in which the two orders co-exist. We demonstrate that such co-existence is possible when SDW order is incommensurate.

Effect of microwave radiation on non-linear resistivity of a two-dimensional electron gas at large filling factors

We study transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas, placed in a classically strong perpendicular magnetic field and in constant and oscillating in-plane electric fields. The analysis is based on a quantum Boltzmann equation derived for a weakly disordered two-dimensional electron gas. We consider disordered potential with both long and short range correlations. Electron scattering off such disorder is not limited to small change in momentum direction, but occurs on an arbitrary angle, including the backscattering. The non-linearity of the transport in the considered system is a consequence of two co-existing effects: formation of a non-equilibrium distribution function of electrons and modification of the scattering rate off the disorder in the presence of dc and ac electric fields. This work describes both effects in a unified way. The calculated dissipative component of electric current oscillates as a function of the electric field strength and frequency of microwave radiation in a qualitative agreement with experiments.

Spin relaxation in quantum dots due to electron exchange with leads

We calculate spin relaxation rates in lateral quantum dot systems due to electron exchange between dots and leads. Using rate equations, we develop a theoretical description of the experimentally observed electric current in the spin blockade regime of double quantum dots. Single expression fits the entire current profile and describes the structure of both the conduction peaks and of the suppressed (`valley') region. Extrinsic rates calculated here have to be taken into account for accurate extraction of intrinsic relaxation rates due to the spin-orbit and hyperfine spin scattering mechanisms from spin blockade measurements.

Stochastic dynamics of magnetization in a ferromagnetic nanoparticle out of equilibrium

We consider a small metallic particle (quantum dot) where ferromagnetism arises as a consequence of Stoner instability. When the particle is connected to electrodes, exchange of electrons between the particle and the electrodes leads to a temperature- and bias-driven Brownian motion of the direction of the particle magnetization. Under certain conditions this Brownian motion is described by the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. As an example of its application, we calculate the frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility of the particle in a constant external magnetic field, which is relevant for ferromagnetic resonance measurements.

Effect of Coulomb interaction on current noise in open quantum dots

We analyze the effect of Coulomb interaction on the noise of electric current through an open quantum dot. We demonstrate that the ensemble average value of the noise power acquires an interaction correction even for a dot coupled to the leads by reflectionless point contacts, when the ensemble average conductance is known to have no interaction corrections. To leading order, the correction to the noise originates from the formation of a nonequilibrium state of the Coulomb field describing the interaction between electrons. We find the dependence of the current noise power on the electron temperature, the applied voltage bias, and the strength of the Coulomb interaction.

Non-linear Resistivity of a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas in a Magnetic Field

We develop a theory of nonlinear response to an electric field of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) placed in a classically strong magnetic field. The latter leads to a non-linear current-voltage characteristic at a relatively weak electric field. The origin of the non-linearity is two-fold: the formation of a non-equilibrium electron distribution function, and the geometrical resonance in the inter-Landau-levels transitions rates. We find the dependence of the current-voltage characteristics on the electron relaxation rates in the 2DEG.

Photovoltaic Current Response of Mesoscopic Conductors to Quantized Cavity Modes

We extend the analysis of the effects of electromagnetic (EM) fields on mesoscopic conductors to include the effects of field quantization, motivated by recent experiments on circuit QED. We show that in general there is a photovoltaic (PV) current induced by quantized cavity modes at zero bias across the conductor. This current depends on the average photon occupation number and vanishes identically when it is equal to the average number of thermal electron-hole pairs. We analyze in detail the case of a chaotic quantum dot at temperature T_e in contact with a thermal EM field at temperature T_f, calculating the RMS size of the PV current as a function of the temperature difference, finding an effect ~pA.

Quantum chaotic scattering in time-dependent external fields: random matrix approach

We review the random matrix description of electron transport through open quantum dots, subject to time-dependent perturbations. All characteristics of the current linear in the bias can be expressed in terms of the scattering matrix, calculated for a time-dependent Hamiltonian. Assuming that the Hamiltonian belongs to a Gaussian ensemble of random matrices, we investigate various statistical properties of the direct current in the ensemble. Particularly, even at zero bias the time-dependent perturbation induces current, called photovoltaic current. We discuss dependence of the photovoltaic current and its noise on the frequency and the strength of the perturbation. We also describe the effect of time-dependent perturbation on the weak localization correction to the conductance and on conductance fluctuations.

Giant Magneto-Oscillations of Electric-Field-Induced Spin Polarization in 2DEG

We consider a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling placed in a perpendicular magnetic field and calculate the magnitude and direction of the electric-field-induced spin polarization. We find that in strong magnetic fields the polarization becomes an oscillatory function of the magnetic field and that the amplitude of these oscillations is parametrically larger than the polarization at zero magnetic field. We show that the enhanced amplitude of the polarization is a consequence of strong electron-hole asymmetry in a quantizing magnetic field.

Transport spectroscopy of Kondo quantum dots coupled by RKKY interaction

We develop the theory of conductance of a quantum dot which carries a spin and is coupled via RKKY interaction to another spin-carrying quantum dot. The found dependence of the differential conductance on bias and magnetic field at fixed RKKY interaction strength may allow one to distinguish between the possible ground states of the system. Transitions between the ground states are achieved by tuning the RKKY interaction, and the nature of these transitions can be extracted from the temperature dependence of the linear conductance. The feasibility of the corresponding measurements is evidenced by recent experiments by Craig et al. [cond-mat/0404213].

Theory of microwave-induced oscillations in the magnetoconductivity of a 2D electron gas

We develop a theory of magnetooscillations in the photoconductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas observed in recent experiments. The effect is governed by a change of the electron distribution function induced by the microwave radiation. We analyze a nonlinearity with respect to both the dc field and the microwave power, as well as the temperature dependence determined by the inelastic relaxation rate.

Photovoltaic and Rectification Currents in Quantum Dots

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the statistical properties of dc current through an open quantum dot subject to ac excitation of a shape-defining gate. The symmetries of rectification current and photovoltaic current with respect to applied magnetic field are examined. Theory and experiment are found to be in good agreement throughout a broad range of frequency and ac power, ranging from adiabatic to nonadiabatic regimes.

Compressibility of a 2D electron gas under microwave radiation

Microwave irradiation of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) produces a non-equilibrium distribution of electrons, and leads to oscillations in the dissipative part of the conductivity. We show that the same non-equilibrium electron distribution induces strong oscillations in the 2DEG compressibility measured by local probes. Local measurements of the compressibility are expected to provide information about the domain structure of the zero resistance state of a 2DEG under microwave radiation.

Aharonov-Bohm effect as a probe of interaction between magnetic impurities

We study the effects of the RKKY interaction between magnetic impurities on the mesoscopic conductance fluctuations of a metal ring with dilute magnetic impurities. At sufficiently low temperatures and strong magnetic fields, the loss of electron coherence occurs mainly due to the scattering off rare pairs of strongly coupled magnetic impurities. We establish a relation between the dephasing rate and the distribution function of the exchange interaction within such pairs. In the case of the RKKY exchange interaction, this rate exhibits 1/B^2 behavior in strong magnetic fields. We demonstrate that the Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations may be used as a probe of the distribution function of the exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in metals.

Magnetotransport in two-dimensional electron gas at large filling factors

We derive the quantum Boltzmann equation for the two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field such that the filling factor $ν\gg 1$. This equation describes all of the effects of the external fields on the impurity collision integral including Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, smooth part of the magnetoresistance, and non-linear transport. Furthemore, we obtain quantitative results for the effect of the external microwave radiation on the linear and non-linear $dc$ transport in the system. Our findings are relevant for the description of the oscillating resistivity discovered by Zudov {\em et al.}, zero-resistance state discovered by Mani {\em et al.} and Zudov {\em et al.}, and for the microscopic justification of the model of Andreev {\em et al.}. We also present semiclassical picture for the qualitative consideration of the effects of the applied field on the collision integral.
