The Friedrichs Model and its use in resonance phenomena

We present here a relation of different types of Friedrichs models and their use in the description and comprehension of resonance phenomena. We first discuss the basic Friedrichs model and obtain its resonance in the case that this is simple or doubly degenerated. Next, we discuss the model with $N$ levels and show how the probability amplitude has an oscillatory behavior. Two generalizations of the Friedrichs model are suitable to introduce resonance behavior in quantum field theory. We also discuss a discrete version of the Friedrichs model and also a resonant interaction between two systems both with continuous spectrum. In an Appendix, we review the mathematics of rigged Hilbert spaces.

Spectrum Generating Algebras for the free motion in $S^3$

We construct the spectrum generating algebra (SGA) for a free particle in the three dimensional sphere $S^3$ for both, classical and quantum descriptions. In the classical approach, the SGA supplies time-dependent constants of motion that allow to solve algebraically the motion. In the quantum case, the SGA include the ladder operators that give the eigenstates of the free Hamiltonian. We study this quantum case from two equivalent points of view.

Classical and quantum integrability in 3D systems

In this contribution, we discuss three situations in which complete integrability of a three dimensional classical system and its quantum version can be achieved under some conditions. The former is a system with axial symmetry. In the second, we discuss a three dimensional system without spatial symmetry which admits separation of variables if we use ellipsoidal coordinates. In both cases, and as a condition for integrability, certain conditions arise in the integrals of motion. Finally, we study integrability in the three dimensional sphere and a particular case associated with the Kepler problem in $S^3$.

On the applications of Hardy class functions in scattering theory

This paper is a response to an article (R. de la Madrid, Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 39,9255-9268 (2006)) recently published in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical. The article claims that the theory of resonances and decaying states based on certain rigged Hilbert spaces of Hardy functions is physically untenable. In this paper we show that all of the key conclusions of the cited article are the result of either the errors in mathematical reasoning or an inadequate understanding of the literature on the subject.

Riggings of locally compact abelian groups

We obtain a set of generalized eigenvectors that provides a generalized spectral decomposition for a given unitary representation of a commutative, locally compact topological group. These generalized eigenvectors are functionals belonging to the dual space of a rigging on the space of square integrable functions on the character group. These riggings are obtained through suitable spectral measure spaces.

Classical and quantum three-dimensional integrable systems with axial symmetry

We study the most general form of a three dimensional classical integrable system with axial symmetry and invariant under the axis reflection. We assume that the three constants of motion are the Hamiltonian, $H$, with the standard form of a kinetic part plus a potential dependent on the position only, the $z$-component of the angular momentum, $L$, and a Hamiltonian-like constant, $\widetilde H$, for which the kinetic part is quadratic in the momenta. We find the explicit form of these potentials compatible with complete integrability. The classical equations of motion, written in terms of two arbitrary potential functions, is separated in oblate spheroidal coordinates. The quantization of such systems leads to a set of two differential equations that can be presented in the form of spheroidal wave equations.

The Friedrichs-Model with fermion-boson couplings

In this work we present an extended version of the Friedrichs Model, which includes fermion-boson couplings. The set of fermion bound states is coupled to a boson field with discrete and continuous components. As a result of the coupling some of the fermion states may become resonant states. This feature suggests the existence of a formal link between the occurrence of Gamow Resonant States in the boson sector, as predicted by the standard Friedrichs Model, with similar effects in the set of solutions of the fermion central potential (Gamow fermion resonances). The structure of the solutions of the model is discussed by using different approximations to the model space. Realistic couplings constants are used to calculate fermion resonances in a heavy mass nucleus.

The Friedrichs-Model with fermion-boson couplings II

In this work we present a formal solution of the extended version of the Friedrichs Model. The Hamiltonian consists of discrete and continuum bosonic states, which are coupled to fermions. The simultaneous treatment of the couplings of the fermions with the discrete and continuous sectors of the bosonic degrees of freedom leads to a system of coupled equations, whose solutions are found by applying standard methods of representation of bound and resonant states.

Eigenfunction Expansions and Transformation Theory

Generalized eigenfunctions may be regarded as vectors of a basis in a particular direct integral of Hilbert spaces or as elements of the antidual space $Φ^\times$ in a convenient Gelfand triplet $Φ\subseteq{\mathcal\H}\subseteqΦ^\times$. This work presents a fit treatment for computational purposes of transformations formulas relating different generalized bases of eigenfunctions in both frameworks direct integrals and Gelfand triplets. Transformation formulas look like usual in Physics literature, as limits of integral functionals but with well defined kernels. Several approaches are feasible. Here Vitali and martingale approaches are showed.

Geometrical origin of the *-product in the Fedosov formalism

The construction of the *-product proposed by Fedosov is implemented in terms of the theory of fibre bundles. The geometrical origin of the Weyl algebra and the Weyl bundle is shown. Several properties of the product in the Weyl algebra are proved. Symplectic and abelian connections in the Weyl algebra bundle are introduced. Relations between them and the symplectic connection on a phase space M are established. Elements of differential symplectic geometry are included. Examples of the Fedosov formalism in quantum mechanics are given.

Quantization on a 2-dimensional phase space with a constant curvature tensor

Some properties of the star product of the Weyl type (i.e. associated with the Weyl ordering) are proved. Fedosov construction of the *-product on a 2-dimensional phase spacewith a constant curvature tensor is presented. Eigenvalue equations for momentum p and position q on a 2-dimensional phase space with constant curvature tensors are solved.

Gamow Functionals on Operator Algebras

We obtain the precise form of two Gamow functionals, representing the exponentially decaying part of a quantum resonance and its mirror image that grows exponentially, as a linear, positive and continuous functional on an algebra containing observables. These functionals do not admit normalization and, with an appropiate choice of the algebra, are time reversal of each other.

The Gamow Functional

We present a formalism that represents pure states, mixtures and generalized states as functionals on an algebra containing the observables of the system. Along these states, there are other functionals that decay exponentially at all times and therefore can be used to describe resonance phenomena.

A Pedestrian Introduction to Gamow Vectors

The Gamow vector description of resonances is compared with the S-matrix and the Green function descriptions using the example of the square barrier potential. By imposing different boundary conditions on the time independent Schrodinger equation, we obtain either eigenvectors corresponding to real eigenvalues and the physical spectrum or eigenvectors corresponding to complex eigenvalues (Gamow vectors) and the resonance spectrum. We show that the poles of the S matrix are the same as the poles of the Green function and are the complex eigenvalues of the Schrodinger equation subject to a purely outgoing boundary condition. The intrinsic time asymmetry of the purely outgoing boundary condition is discussed. Finally, we show that the probability of detecting the decay within a shell around the origin of the decaying state follows an exponential law if the Gamow vector (resonance) contribution to this probability is the only contribution that is taken into account.

Rigged Hilbert Space Treatment of Continuous Spectrum

The ability of the Rigged Hilbert Space formalism to deal with continuous spectrum is demonstrated within the example of the square barrier potential. The non-square integrable solutions of the time-independent Schrodinger equation are used to define Dirac kets, which are (generalized) eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian. These Dirac kets are antilinear functionals over the space of physical wave functions. They are also basis vectors that expand any physical wave function in a Dirac basis vector expansion. It is shown that an acceptable physical wave function must fulfill stronger conditions than just square integrability--the space of physical wave functions is not the whole Hilbert space but rather a dense subspace of the Hilbert space. We construct the position and energy representations of the Rigged Hilbert Space generated by the square barrier potential Hamiltonian. We shall also construct the unitary operator that transforms from the position into the energy representation. We shall see that in the energy representation the Dirac kets act as the antilinear Schwartz delta functional. In constructing the Rigged Hilbert Space of the square barrier potential, we will find a systematic procedure to construct the Rigged Hilbert Space of a large class of spherically symmetric potentials. The example of the square barrier potential will also make apparent that the natural framework for the solutions of a Schrodinger operator with continuous spectrum is the Rigged Hilbert Space rather than just the Hilbert space.

On the mean value of the energy for resonant states

In this work we discuss possible definitions of the mean value of the energy for a resonant (Gamow) state. The mathematical and physical aspects of the formalism are reviewed. The concept of rigged Hilbert space is used as a supportive tool in dealing with Gamow-resonances.

Gamow-Jordan Vectors and Non-Reducible Density Operators from Higher Order S-Matrix Poles

In analogy to Gamow vectors that are obtained from first order resonance poles of the S-matrix, one can also define higher order Gamow vectors which are derived from higher order poles of the S-matrix. An S-matrix pole of r-th order at z_R=E_R-iΓ/2 leads to r generalized eigenvectors of order k= 0, 1, ... , r-1, which are also Jordan vectors of degree (k+1) with generalized eigenvalue (E_R-iΓ/2). The Gamow-Jordan vectors are elements of a generalized complex eigenvector expansion, whose form suggests the definition of a state operator (density matrix) for the microphysical decaying state of this higher order pole. This microphysical state is a mixture of non-reducible components. In spite of the fact that the k-th order Gamow-Jordan vectors has the polynomial time-dependence which one always associates with higher order poles, the microphysical state obeys a purely exponential decay law.
