A test of light-lepton universality in the rates of inclusive semileptonic $B$-meson decays at Belle II

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic $B$-meson decays, $R(X_{e/μ}) = \mathcal{B}(B\to X \, e \, ν) / \mathcal{B}(B\to X \, μ\, ν)$, a precision test of electron-muon universality, using data corresponding to $189\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. In events where the partner $B$ meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above $1.3\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ to obtain $R(X_{e/μ}) = 1.007 \pm 0.009~(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.019~(\mathrm{syst})$, which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.

Combined analysis of Belle and Belle II data to determine the CKM angle $ ϕ_{3} $ using $B^+ \to D(K_{S}^0 h^- h^+) h^+$ decays

We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle angle $ ϕ_{3} $ (also known as~$γ$) using a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of \linebreak $B^+\to D\left(K_{S}^{0}h^{+}h^{-}\right)h^+$, where $D$ is either a $D^0$ or $\bar{D}{}^0$ meson and $h$ is either a $π$ or $K$. This is the first measurement that simultaneously uses Belle and Belle~II data, combining samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of \SI{711}{fb^{-1}} and \SI{128}{fb^{-1}}, respectively. All data were accumulated from energy-asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy corresponding to the mass of the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We measure $ϕ_3 = \left(78.4 \pm 11.4 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.0 \right)^{\circ}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is from the uncertainties on external measurements of the $D$-decay strong-phase parameters.

Search for $B^{+}\to K^{+}ν\barν$ decays using an inclusive tagging method at Belle II

A search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decay $B^{+}\to K^{+}ν\barν$ is performed at the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $63\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ collected at the $Υ{(4S)}$ resonance and a sample of $9\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ collected at an energy $60\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}$ below the resonance. A novel measurement method is employed, which exploits topological properties of the $B^{+}\to K^{+}ν\barν$ decay that differ from both generic bottom-meson decays and light-quark pair production. This inclusive tagging approach offers a higher signal efficiency compared to previous searches. No significant signal is observed. An upper limit on the branching fraction of $B^{+}\to K^{+}ν\barν$ of $4.1 \times 10^{-5}$ is set at the 90% confidence level.

Search for an invisibly decaying $Z^{\prime}$ boson at Belle II in $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- (e^{\pm} μ^{\mp})$ plus missing energy final states

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the $Z^{\prime}$. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a $Z^{\prime}$ in the process $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- Z^{\prime}$ and of a lepton-flavor-violating $Z^{\prime}$ in $e^+ e^- \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp} Z^{\prime}$. We do not find any excess of events and set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an $L_μ-L_τ$ theory, into upper limits on the $Z^{\prime}$ coupling constant at the level of $5 \times 10^{-2}$ -- $1$ $M_{Z^\prime}\leq 6$ GeV/$c^2$.

Structural characterization of as-grown and quasi-free standing graphene layers on SiC

We report on a comparative structural characterization of two types of high quality epitaxial graphene layers grown by CVD on 4H-SiC(0001). The layers under study are a single layer graphene on top of a buffer layer and a quasi-free-standing graphene obtained by intercalation of hydrogen underneath the buffer layer. We determine the morphology and structure of both layers by different complementary in-situ and ex-situ surface techniques. We found the existence of large islands in both samples but with different size distribution. Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) measurements were performed to get information about the chemical environment of the different regions. The study reveals that monolayer graphene prevails in most of the surface terraces, while a bilayer and trilayer graphene presence is observed at the steps, stripes along steps and islands.

Proximity driven commensurate pinning in YBa2Cu3O7 through all-oxide magnetic nanostructures

The design of artificial vortex pinning landscapes is a major goal towards large scale applications of cuprate superconductors. While disordered nanometric inclusions have shown to modify their vortex phase diagram and to produce enhancements of the critical current1,2, the effect of ordered oxide nanostructures remains essentially unexplored. This is due to the very small nanostructure size imposed by the short coherence length, and to the technological difficulties in the nanofabrication process. Yet, the novel phenomena occurring at oxide interfaces open a wide spectrum of technological opportunities to interplay with the superconductivity in cuprates. Here we show that the unusual long range suppression of the superconductivity occurring at the interface between manganites and cuprates affects vortex nucleation and provides a novel vortex pinning mechanism. In particular, we show evidence of commensurate pinning in YBCO films with ordered arrays of LCMO ferromagnetic nanodots. Vortex pinning results from the proximity induced reduction of the condensation energy at the vicinity of the magnetic nanodots, and yields an enhanced friction between the nanodot array and the moving vortex lattice in the liquid phase. This result shows that all-oxide ordered nanostructures constitute a powerful, new route for the artificial manipulation of vortex matter in cuprates.

Magnetic field dependence of the density of states in the multiband superconductor $β$-Bi$_2$Pd

We present very low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments on single crystalline samples of the superconductor $β$-Bi$_2$Pd. We find a single fully isotropic superconducting gap. However, the magnetic field dependence of the intervortex density of states is higher than the one expected in a single gap superconductor, and the hexagonal vortex lattice is locked to the square atomic lattice. Such increase in the intervortex density of states and vortex lattice locking have been found in superconductors with multiple superconducting gaps and anisotropic Fermi surfaces. We compare the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ obtained in our sample with previous measurements and explain available data within multiband supercondutivity. We propose that $β$-Bi$_2$Pd is a single gap multiband superconductor. We anticipate that single gap multiband superconductivity can occur in other compounds with complex Fermi surfaces.

Spin waves along the edge states

Spin waves have been studied experimentally and by simulations in 1000 nm side equilateral triangular Permalloy dots in the Buckle state (B, with in-plane field along the triangle base) and the Y state (Y, with in-plane field perpendicular to the base). The excess of exchange energy at the triangles edges creates channels that allow effective spin wave propagation along the edges inthe B state. These quasi one-dimensional spin waves emitted by the vertex magnetic charges gradually transform from propagating to standing due to interference and(as pointed out by simulations) areweakly affected by smallvariations of the aspect ratio(from equilateral to isosceles dots) or by interdot dipolar interaction present in our dot arrays. Spin waves excited in the Y state have mainly a two-dimensional character.Propagation of the spin waves along the edge states in triangular dots opens possibilities for creation of new and versatile spintronic devices.

Superconductivity and magnetism on flux grown single crystals of NiBi3

We present resistivity, magnetization and specific heat measurements on flux grown single crystals of NiBi3. We find typical behavior of a type-II superconductor, with, however, a sizable magnetic signal in the superconducting phase. There is a hysteretic magnetization characteristic of a ferromagnetic compound. By following the magnetization as a function of temperature, we find a drop at temperatures corresponding to the Curie temperature of ferromagnetic amorphous Ni. Thus, we assign the magnetism in NiBi$_3$ crystals to amorphous Ni impurities.

Pressure dependence of superconducting critical temperature and upper critical field of 2H-NbS2

We present measurements of the superconducting critical temperature Tc and upper critical field Hc2 as a function of pressure in the transition metal dichalcogenide 2H-NbS2 up to 20 GPa. We observe that Tc increases smoothly from 6K at ambient pressure to about 8.9K at 20GPa. This range of increase is comparable to the one found previously in 2H-NbSe2. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T) of 2H-NbS2 varies considerably when increasing the pressure. At low pressures, Hc2(0) decreases, and at higher pressures both Tc and Hc2(0) increase simultaneously. This points out that there are pressure induced changes of the Fermi surface, which we analyze in terms of a simplified two band approach.

Room temperature ferromagnetic-like behavior in Mn-implanted and post-annealed InAs layers deposited by Molecular Beam Epitaxy

We report on the magnetic and structural properties of Ar and Mn implanted InAs epitaxial films grown on GaAs (100) by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and the effect of Rapid Thermal Annealing (RTA) for 30 seconds at 750C. Channeling Particle Induced X- ray Emission (PIXE) experiments reveal that after Mn implantation almost all Mn atoms are subsbtitutional in the In-site of the InAs lattice, like in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS). All of these samples show diamagnetic behavior. But, after RTA treatment the Mn-InAs films exhibit room-temperature magnetism. According to PIXE measurements the Mn atoms are no longer substitutional. When the same set of experiments were performed with As as implantation ion all of the layers present diamagnetism without exception. This indicates that the appearance of room-temperature ferromagnetic-like behavior in the Mn-InAs-RTA layer is not related to lattice disorder produce during implantation, but to a Mn reaction produced after a short thermal treatment. X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and Rutherford Back Scattering (RBS) measurements evidence the segregation of an oxygen deficient-MnO2 phase (nominally MnO1.94) in the Mn-InAs-RTA epitaxial layers which might be on the origin of room temperature ferromagnetic-like response observed.

Temperature dependent dynamic and static magnetic response in magnetic tunnel junctions with Permalloy layers

Ferromagnetic resonance and static magnetic properties of CoFe/Al2O3/CoFe/Py and CoFe/Al2O3/CoFeB/Py magnetic tunnel junctions and of 25nm thick single-layer Permalloy(Py) films have been studied as a function of temperature down to 2K. The temperature dependence of the ferromagnetic resonance excited in the Py layers in magnetic tunnel junctions shows knee-like enhancement of the resonance frequency accompanied by an anomaly in the magnetization near 60K. We attribute the anomalous static and dynamic magnetic response at low temperatures to interface stress induced magnetic reorientation transition at the Py interface which could be influenced by dipolar soft-hard layer coupling through the Al2O3 barrier.

Identification of a Marginal Fermi-Liquid in Itinerant Ferromagnet CoS2

We report specific heat, resistivity and susceptibility measurements at different temperatures, magnetic fields, and pressures to provide solid evidence of CoS2 being a marginal Fermi liquid. The presence of a tricritical point in the phase diagram of the system provides an opportunity to test the spin fluctuation theory with a high limit of accuracy. A magnetic field suppresses the amplitude of the spin fluctuations and recovers conventional Fermi liquid behavior, connecting both states continuously.

Enhanced Pressure Dependence of Magnetic Exchange in A2+[V2]O4 Spinels Approaching the Itinerant Electron Limit

We report a systematic enhancement of the pressure dependence of TN in A2+[V2]O4 spinels as the V-V separation approaches the critical separation for a transition to itinerant-electron behavior. An intermediate phase between localized and itinerant electron behavior is identified in Zn[V2]O4 and Mg[V2]O4 exhibiting mobile holes as large polarons. In Zn[V2]O4, cooperative ordering of V-V pairs below a Ts=TN does not totally suppress the V3+-ion spins at ambient pressure, but makes TN to decrease with pressure. Our results demonstrate that Zn[V2]O4 and Mg[V2]O4 are less localized than previously thought.

VO: A Strongly Correlated Metal Close to a Mott- Hubbard Transition

Here we present experimental and computational evidences to support that rock-salt cubic VO is a strongly correlated metal with Non-Fermi-Liquid thermodynamics and an unusually strong spin-lattice coupling. An unexpected change of sign of metallic thermopower with composition is tentatively ascribed to the presence of a pseudogap in the density of states. These properties are discussed as signatures of the proximity to a magnetic quantum phase transition. The results are summarized in a new electronic phase diagram for the 3d monoxides, which resembles that of other strongly correlated systems. The structural and electronic simplicity of 3d monoxides make them ideal candidates to progress in the understanding of highly correlated electron systems.

New low-temperature phases in NaxCoO2 linked to quantum criticality

New electronic phases have been identified and placed in the (T,H) phase diagram of metallic NaxCoO2. At low Na-content (x = 0.36), the magnetic susceptibility diverges with a power law T^(-n), n<1, and shows (T,H) scaling, indicating the proximity to a magnetic quantum phase transition. At high Na contents (x = 0.6) the mass of the quasiparticles does never diverge, but renormalizes and becomes strongly field dependent at low temperatures, forming a heavy Fermi-Liquid. Our results make superconducting NaxCoO2 a clear candidate for magnetically mediated pairing.

Magnetic study of an amorphous conducting polyaniline

We show that newly found BF3-doped polyaniline, though highly conducting, remains amorphous. Magnetic studies reveal many unusual properties, while suggesting that the intrinsic conductivity of this system is significantly larger than all other known forms of conducting polyaniline, establishing it as an interesting class of highly conducting amorphous polymer.

Disorder induced phase segregation in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 manganites

Neutron powder diffraction experiments on La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 over a broad temperature range above and below the metal-insulator transition have been analyzed beyond the Rietveld average approach by use of Reverse Monte Carlo modelling. This approach allows the calculation of atomic pair distribution functions and spin correlation functions constrained to describe the observed Bragg and diffuse nuclear and magnetic scattering. The results evidence phase separation within a paramagnetic matrix into ferro and antiferromagnetic domains correlated to anistropic lattice distortions in the vicinity of the metal-insulator transition.
