Characterization and automated optimization of laser-driven proton beams from converging liquid sheet jet targets

Compact, stable, and versatile laser-driven ion sources hold great promise for applications ranging from medicine to materials science and fundamental physics. While single-shot sources have demonstrated favorable beam properties, including the peak fluxes necessary for several applications, high repetition rate operation will be necessary to generate and sustain the high average flux needed for many of the most exciting applications of laser-driven ion sources. Further, to navigate through the high-dimensional space of laser and target parameters towards experimental optima, it is essential to develop ion acceleration platforms compatible with machine learning learning techniques and capable of autonomous real-time optimization. Here we present a multi-Hz ion acceleration platform employing a liquid sheet jet target. We characterize the laser-plasma interaction and the laser-driven proton beam across a variety of key parameters governing the interaction using an extensive suite of online diagnostics. We also demonstrate real-time, closed-loop optimization of the ion beam maximum energy by tuning the laser wavefront using a Bayesian optimization scheme. This approach increased the maximum proton energy by 11% compared to a manually-optimized wavefront by enhancing the energy concentration within the laser focal spot, demonstrating the potential for closed-loop optimization schemes to tune future ion accelerators for robust high repetition rate operation.

Automated control and optimisation of laser driven ion acceleration

The interaction of relativistically intense lasers with opaque targets represents a highly non-linear, multi-dimensional parameter space. This limits the utility of sequential 1D scanning of experimental parameters for the optimisation of secondary radiation, although to-date this has been the accepted methodology due to low data acquisition rates. High repetition-rate (HRR) lasers augmented by machine learning present a valuable opportunity for efficient source optimisation. Here, an automated, HRR-compatible system produced high fidelity parameter scans, revealing the influence of laser intensity on target pre-heating and proton generation. A closed-loop Bayesian optimisation of maximum proton energy, through control of the laser wavefront and target position, produced proton beams with equivalent maximum energy to manually-optimized laser pulses but using only 60% of the laser energy. This demonstration of automated optimisation of laser-driven proton beams is a crucial step towards deeper physical insight and the construction of future radiation sources.

Gelation and Re-entrance in Mixtures of Soft Colloids and Linear Polymers of Equal Size

Liquid mixtures composed of colloidal particles and much smaller non-adsorbing linear homopolymers can undergo a gelation transition due to polymer-mediated depletion forces. We now show that the addition of linear polymers to suspensions of soft colloids having the same hydrodynamic size yields a liquid-to-gel-to-re-entrant liquid transition. In particular, the dynamic state diagram of 1,4-polybutadiene star-linear polymer mixtures was determined with the help of linear viscoelastic and small angle X-ray scattering experiments. While keeping the star polymers below their nominal overlap concentration, a gel was formed upon increasing the linear polymer content. Further addition of linear chains yielded a re-entrant liquid. This unexpected behavior was rationalized by the interplay of three possible phenomena: (i) depletion interactions, driven by the size disparity between the stars and the polymer length scale which is the mesh size of this entanglement network; (ii) colloidal deswelling due to the increased osmotic pressure exerted onto the stars; and (iii) a concomitant progressive suppression of depletion efficiency on increasing polymer concentration due to reduced mesh size, hence a smaller range of attraction. Our results unveil an exciting new way to tailor the flow of soft colloids and highlight a largely unexplored path to engineer soft colloidal mixtures.

Laser-driven neutron source from high temperature D-D fusion reactions

We report a laser-driven neutron source with high yield ($>10^8$/J) and high peak flux ($>10^{25}$/cm$^2$/s) derived from high-temperature deuteron-deuteron fusion reactions. The neutron yield and the fusion temperature ($\sim 200$ keV) in our experiment are respectively two orders of magnitude and one order of magnitude higher than any previous laser-induced D-D fusion reaction. The high-temperature plasma is generated from thin ($\sim 2\,\mu$m), solid-density deuterium targets, produced by a cryogenic jet, irradiated by a 140 fs, 130 J petawatt laser with an F/3 off-axis parabola and a plasma mirror achieving fast volumetric heating of the target. The fusion temperature and neutron fluxes achieved here suggest future laser experiments can take advantage of neutrons to diagnose the plasma conditions and come closer to laboratory study of astrophysically-relevant nuclear physics.

Collisionless shock acceleration of narrow energy spread ion beams from mixed species plasmas using 1 $\mu$m lasers

Collisionless shock acceleration of protons and C$^{6+}$ ions has been achieved by the interaction of a 10$^{20}$ W/cm$^2$, 1 $\mu$m laser with a near-critical density plasma. Ablation of the initially solid density target by a secondary laser allowed for systematic control of the plasma profile. This enabled the production of beams with peaked spectra with energies of 10-18 MeV/a.m.u. and energy spreads of 10-20$\%$ with up to 3x10$^9$ particles within these narrow spectral features. The narrow energy spread and similar velocity of ion species with different charge-to-mass ratio are consistent with acceleration by the moving potential of a shock wave. Particle-in-cell simulations show shock accelerated beams of protons and C$^{6+}$ ions with energy distributions consistent with the experiments. Simulations further indicate the plasma profile determines the trade-off between the beam charge and energy and that with additional target optimization narrow energy spread beams exceeding 100 MeV/a.m.u. can be produced using the same laser conditions.

Setup for meV-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering measurements at the Matter in Extreme Conditions Endstation at the LCLS

We describe a setup for performing inelastic X-ray scattering measurements at the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) endstation of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). This technique is capable of performing high-, meV-resolution measurements of dynamic ion features in both crystalline and non-crystalline materials. A four-bounce silicon (533) monochromator was used in conjunction with three silicon (533) diced crystal analyzers to provide an energy resolution of ~50 meV over a range of ~500 meV in single shot measurements. In addition to the instrument resolution function, we demonstrate the measurement of longitudinal acoustic phonon modes in polycrystalline diamond. Furthermore, this setup may be combined with the high intensity laser drivers available at MEC to create warm dense matter, and subsequently measure ion acoustic modes.

Crystal-to-crystal transition of ultrasoft colloids under shear

Ultrasoft colloids typically do not spontaneously crystallize, but rather vitrify, at high concentrations. Combining in-situ rheo-SANS experiments and numerical simulations we show that shear facilitates crystallization of colloidal star polymers in the vicinity of their glass transition. With increasing shear rate well beyond rheological yielding, a transition is found from an initial bcc-dominated structure to an fcc-dominated one. This crystal-to-crystal transition is not accompanied by intermediate melting but occurs via a sudden reorganization of the crystal structure. Our results provide a new avenue to tailor colloidal crystallization and crystal-to-crystal transition at molecular level by coupling softness and shear.

Relativistic electron streaming instabilities modulate proton beams accelerated in laser-plasma interactions

We report experimental evidence that multi-MeV protons accelerated in relativistic laser-plasma interactions are modulated by strong filamentary electromagnetic fields. Modulations are observed when a preplasma is developed on the rear side of a $\mu$m-scale solid-density hydrogen target. Under such conditions, electromagnetic fields are amplified by the relativistic electron Weibel instability and are maximized at the critical density region of the target. The analysis of the spatial profile of the protons indicates the generation of $B>$10 MG and $E>$0.1 MV/$\mu$m fields with a $\mu$m-scale wavelength. These results are in good agreement with three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and analytical estimates, which further confirm that this process is dominant for different target materials provided that a preplasma is formed on the rear side with scale length $\gtrsim 0.13 \lambda_0 \sqrt{a_0}$. These findings impose important constraints on the preplasma levels required for high-quality proton acceleration for multi-purpose applications.

Equation of State, Stability, Anisotropy and Nonlinear Elasticity of Diamond-Cubic (ZB) Silicon by Phonon Imaging at High Pressure

Experimental phonon imaging in diamond anvils cell is demonstrated to be an adequate tool to extract the complete set of elastic constants of single-crystalline silicon up to the ZB$\rightarrow β-$Sn transition (10 GPa). Contrary to what was commonly admitted, we demonstrate that the development of the strain-energy density in terms of strains cannot be stopped, for silicon, after the terms containing the third-order elastic constants. Nonlinear elasticity, degree of anisotropy and pressure-induced mechanical stability of the cubic silicon structure are thus revisited and investigated in more detail.

Bond-bending modes and stability of tetrahedral semiconductors under high pressure: a puzzle of AlN

Lattice vibrations of the wurtzite-type AlN have been studied by Raman spectroscopy under high pressure up to the structural phase transition at 20 GPa. We have shown that the widely debated bond-bending E_2^1 mode of w-AlN has an abnormal positive pressure shift up to the threshold of the phase transition, whereas in many tetrahedral semiconductors the bond-bending modes soften on compression. This finding disagrees with the results of ab initio calculations, which give a "normal" negative pressure shift. Combination of high dynamical and low thermodynamical stability of AlN breaks the correlation between the mode Gruneisen parameters for the bond-bending modes and the transition pressure, which holds for CdS, InP, ZnO, ZnTe, ZnSe, ZnS, Ge, Si, GaP, GaN, SiC and BeO.
