Updated physics performance of the ESSnuSB experiment

In this paper, we present the physics performance of the ESSnuSB experiment in the standard three flavor scenario using the updated neutrino flux calculated specifically for the ESSnuSB configuration and updated migration matrices for the far detector. Taking conservative systematic uncertainties corresponding to a normalization error of $5\%$ for signal and $10\%$ for background, we find that there is $10σ$ $(13σ)$ CP violation discovery sensitivity for the baseline option of 540 km (360 km) at $δ_{\rm CP} = \pm 90^\circ$. The corresponding fraction of $δ_{\rm CP}$ for which CP violation can be discovered at more than $5 σ$ is $70\%$. Regarding CP precision measurements, the $1σ$ error associated with $δ_{\rm CP} = 0^\circ$ is around $5^\circ$ and with $δ_{\rm CP} = -90^\circ$ is around $14^\circ$ $(7^\circ)$ for the baseline option of 540 km (360 km). For hierarchy sensitivity, one can have $3σ$ sensitivity for 540 km baseline except $δ_{\rm CP} = \pm 90^\circ$ and $5σ$ sensitivity for 360 km baseline for all values of $δ_{\rm CP}$. The octant of $θ_{23}$ can be determined at $3 σ$ for the values of: $θ_{23} > 51^\circ$ ($θ_{23} < 42^\circ$ and $θ_{23} > 49^\circ$) for baseline of 540 km (360 km). Regarding measurement precision of the atmospheric mixing parameters, the allowed values at $3 σ$ are: $40^\circ < θ_{23} < 52^\circ$ ($42^\circ < θ_{23} < 51.5^\circ$) and $2.485 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2 < Δm^2_{31} < 2.545 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ ($2.49 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2 < Δm^2_{31} < 2.54 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$) for the baseline of 540 km (360 km).

Symmetry and planar chirality of a protein measured on an angular basis in a transmission electron microscope

In quantum mechanics, each conserved quantity (e.g., energy, position, linear momentum and angular momentum) is associated with a Hermitian operator. Its expected value can then be determined by performing a measurement on the wavefunction. In modern electron microscopy, one can select the initial and final states of the electron and the measurement basis by performing measurements of scattering processes. For example, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of an electron can be used to reveal the n-fold symmetry of a wavefunction scattered by a sample. Here, we introduce a new composite planar chirality operator that can be used to measure a spiral-like feature in a sample. This concept develops the concept of chirality to highlight a specific roto-scale symmetry. We show that planar chirality can be characterized using an electron OAM sorter to uncover the atomic structures of biomolecules in cryo electron microscopy, either in a stand-alone analysis for fast identification of protein structures or in the context of conventional cryo electron microscopy to produce faster and more detailed 3D reconstructions by solving upside-down orientation ambiguities.

Physics Potentials with the Second Hyper-Kamiokande Detector in Korea

Hyper-Kamiokande consists of two identical water-Cherenkov detectors of total 520~kt with the first one in Japan at 295~km from the J-PARC neutrino beam with 2.5$^{\textrm{o}}$ Off-Axis Angles (OAAs), and the second one possibly in Korea in a later stage. Having the second detector in Korea would benefit almost all areas of neutrino oscillation physics mainly due to longer baselines. There are several candidate sites in Korea with baselines of 1,000$\sim$1,300~km and OAAs of 1$^{\textrm{o}}$$\sim$3$^{\textrm{o}}$. We conducted sensitivity studies on neutrino oscillation physics for a second detector, either in Japan (JD $\times$ 2) or Korea (JD + KD) and compared the results with a single detector in Japan. Leptonic CP violation sensitivity is improved especially when the CP is non-maximally violated. The larger matter effect at Korean candidate sites significantly enhances sensitivities to non-standard interactions of neutrinos and mass ordering determination. Current studies indicate the best sensitivity is obtained at Mt. Bisul (1,088~km baseline, $1.3^\circ$ OAA). Thanks to a larger (1,000~m) overburden than the first detector site, clear improvements to sensitivities for solar and supernova relic neutrino searches are expected.

Small Area Shrinkage Estimation

The need for small area estimates is increasingly felt in both the public and private sectors in order to formulate their strategic plans. It is now widely recognized that direct small area survey estimates are highly unreliable owing to large standard errors and coefficients of variation. The reason behind this is that a survey is usually designed to achieve a specified level of accuracy at a higher level of geography than that of small areas. Lack of additional resources makes it almost imperative to use the same data to produce small area estimates. For example, if a survey is designed to estimate per capita income for a state, the same survey data need to be used to produce similar estimates for counties, subcounties and census divisions within that state. Thus, by necessity, small area estimation needs explicit, or at least implicit, use of models to link these areas. Improved small area estimates are found by "borrowing strength" from similar neighboring areas.

Study of electron spin dynamics in grain aligned LaCoPO: an itinerant ferromagnet

139La NMR study was performed in grain aligned (c|| H0) sample of LaCoPO and polycrystalline LaFePO. Knight shift is isotropic and temperature independent in LaFePO. It is strongly temperature dependent and anisotropic in LaCoPO. The spin-lattice relaxation rate in LaCoPO clearly reveals the existence of 3D spin fluctuations both in the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic state over and above the dominant 2D spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic state, observed earlier from 31P NMR measurements in the same oriented sample. The spin fluctuation parameters in LaCoPO determined from 139La NMR relaxation and magnetization data, using the self consistent renormalization (SCR) theory, are in close agreement and follow the universal Rhodes-Wohlfarth curve.

Spectral sensitive phonon wipeout due to a fluctuating spin state in a Fe2+ coordination polymer

Raman scattering in the spin-crossover system [Fe(pmd)(H2O){Au(CN)2}2]*H2O reveals a complex three-phase spin-state transition in contrast to earlier observations in magnetization measurements. We observe different spin state phases as function of temperature and electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectral range. There exists a fluctuating spin state phase with an unexpected wipeout of the low frequency phonon scattering intensity. Furthermore we observe one phase with reduced symmetry that is attributed to a cooperative Jahn-Teller effect. Pronounced electron-phonon interaction manifests itself as a strong Fano-resonance of phonons related to {FeN6} and {FeN4O2} coordination octahedra. Density functional theory supports this interpretation.
