Analysis of ProNaOS submillimeter maps in the M42 Orion Nebula - Temperature - spectral index inverse correlation in several regions

We have mapped with the French submillimeter balloon-borne telescope ProNaOS the thermal emission of the dust in the M42 Orion Nebula. The map obtained is 50' by 40' with an angular resolution of about 3' in the four efficient wavelengths 200 $\mic$, 260 $\mic$, 360 $\mic$ and 580 $\mic$. The temperature and index we obtain are highly variable within the studied region: the temperature varies from 12 K to 70 K, and the spectral index from 1.1 to 2.2. The statistical analysis of the temperature and spectral index spatial distribution in this region, as well as in the other regions mapped by ProNaOS, shows an evidence of an inverse correlation between these two parameters. We deduce the column densities of gas and the masses. Being invisible in the IRAS 100 $\mic$ survey, some cold clouds are likely to be the seeds for future star formation activity going on in the complex.

Extended SZ map of the most luminous X-ray cluster, RXJ1347-1145

We present in this letter a high resolution (22'' FWHM) extended map at 2.1mm of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect toward the most luminous X-ray cluster, RXJ1347-1145. These observations have been performed with the DIABOLO photometer working at the focus of the 30m IRAM radiotelescope. We have derived a projected gas mass of $(1.1 \pm 0.1)\times 10^{14} h_{50}^{-5/2}$M$_{\odot}$ within an angular radius of $θ=74''$ (ie: projected radius of 0.6Mpc, $H_{0}=50$km/s/Mpc, $Ω_m=0.3$, $Ω_Λ=0.7$). This result matches very well the expected gas mass from the cluster models of X-ray data. With an unprecedented sensitivity level our measurement does not show significant departure from a spherical distribution. The data analysis also allows us to characterize the 2.1mm flux of a well known radio source lying in the center of the cluster: $F_{RS}(2.1\textrm{mm})=5.7\pm 1.6$mJy.

Calibration and First light of the Diabolo photometer at the Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory

We have designed and built a large-throughput dual channel photometer, Diabolo. This photometer is dedicated to the observation of millimetre continuum diffuse sources, and in particular, of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and of anisotropies of the 3K background. We describe the optical layout and filtering system of the instrument, which uses two bolometric detectors for simultaneous observations in two frequency channels at 1.2 and 2.1 mm. The bolometers are cooled to a working temperature of 0.1 K provided by a compact dilution cryostat. The photometric and angular responses of the instrument are measured in the laboratory. First astronomical light was detected in March 1995 at the focus of the new Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory (MITO) Telescope. The established sensitivity of the system is of 7 mK_RJ s^1/2$. For a typical map of at least 10 beams, with one hour of integration per beam, one can achieve the rms values of y_SZ ~ 7 10^-5 and the 3K background anisotropy Delta T/T ~ 7 10^-5, in winter conditions. We also report on a novel bolometer AC readout circuit which allows for the first time total power measurements on the sky. This technique alleviates (but does not forbid) the use of chopping with a secondary mirror. This technique and the dilution fridge concept will be used in future scan--modulated space instrument like the ESA Planck mission project.

All sky mapping of the Cosmic Microwave Background at 8' angular resolution with a 0.1 K bolometer: simulations

We present simulations of observations with the 143 GHz channel of the Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI). These simulations are performed over the entire sky, using the true angular resolution of this channel: 8 arcmin FWHM, 3.5 arcmin per pixel. We show that with measured 0.1 K bolometer performances, the sensitivity needed on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) survey is obtained using simple and robust data processing techniques, including a destriping algorithm.

A Sunyaev-Zel'dovich map of the massive core in the luminous X-ray cluster RXJ1347-1145

We have mapped the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich decrement (hereafter SZ) in the direction of the most luminous X-ray cluster known to date, RXJ1347-1145, at z=0.451. This has been achieved with an angular resolution of about 23'' using the Diabolo photometer running on the IRAM 30 meter radio telescope. We present here a map of the cluster central region at 2.1mm. The Comptonization parameter towards the cluster center, $\yc=(12.7^{+2.9}_{-3.1})\times 10^{-4}$, corresponds to the deepest SZ decrement ever observed. Using the gas density distribution derived from X-ray data, this measurement implies a gas temperature $\te=16.2 \pm 3.8$ keV. The resulting total mass of the cluster is, under hydrostatic equilibrium, $M(r<1 Mpc)=(1.0 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{15} M_\odot$ for a corresponding gas fraction $f_{gas}(r<1 Mpc)=(19.5 \pm 5.8)%$.

First measurement of the submillimetre Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect

We report the first detection of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich increment on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at submillimetre wavelengths in the direction of a cluster of galaxies. It was achieved towards the rich cluster Abell 2163, using the PRONAOS 2-metre stratospheric telescope. Together with data from the SuZIE, Diabolo, and ISO-PHT experiments, these measurements, for the first time, give a complete picture of the far-infrared to millimetre spectral energy distribution of the diffuse emission toward a cluster of galaxies. It clearly shows the positive and negative parts of the S.Z. effect and also a positive signal at short wavelengths that can be attributed to foreground dust in our galaxy.

Observations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect at high angular resolution towards the galaxy clusters A665, A2163 and CL0016+16

We report on the first observation of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect with the Diabolo experiment at the IRAM 30 metre telescope. A significant brightness decrement is detected in the direction of three clusters (Abell 665, Abell 2163 and CL0016+16). With a 30 arcsecond beam and 3 arcminute beamthrow, this is the highest angular resolution observation to date of the SZ effect.

Determination of the hot intracluster gas temperature from submillimeter measurements

Measurements of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (hereafter SZ) distorsion of the cosmic microwave background can give interesting physical informations on clusters of galaxies, provided that the electronic temperature of the gas is known. Previous attempts to do so have used the electronic temperature determination obtained from the X-ray spectra. However, if the intergalactic gas is not homogeneous, the X-ray emission will trace the denser component, and the temperature determination may not be relevant for the lower density gas which is dominating the SZ measurements. Moreover, the X-ray brightness decreases very rapidly with the distance, which is not the case for the SZ effect. Distant clusters might be detected from SZ measurements, whereas they are inaccessible to X-ray observations. For these reasons, we have investigated the possibility to derive the electronic temperature of the gas from the SZ measurements in the submillimeter range (lambda ~ 300-600 micro-m). We show that given the sensitivities of the future submillimeter space missions Planck Surveyor and FIRST, the electronic temperature of massive clusters (Y_center=3*10^{-4}) can be determined with an accuracy ranging from 1 to 4 keV depending on its distance and the data avalaible.

Excitation of Interstellar Molecules by Near Infrared PAH Photons

We have developed an excitation model for small molecules including radiative pumping by dust photons from near infrared to submillimeter wavelengths. This model applies to molecules within bright photodissociation regions in galactic star-forming regions and starburst galaxies. In such environments, the near infrared photons emitted by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules (PAHs) or small carbon grains, 5 micron < lambda < 20 micron, are able to penetrate molecular regions and pump the molecules in an excited vibration state. The far infrared and submillimeter transitions involved in the de-excitation cascade are strongly affected by this process. Their intensities can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude. We have applied this model to H2O and NH3, ortho and para species. The behaviour of the FIR rotation lines with respect to the gas density and the molecule column density is strongly modified compared to pure collisional models. At moderate densities, nH2 < 10^5 cm-3, radiative pumping dominates the excitation of the rotation ladder, and the FIR lines are good probes of the molecule column density. The near infrared absorption and emission lines predicted to appear between 6 and 7 micron for H2O and from 10 to 12 micron for NH3 can also be used for this purpose. Concerning ortho-H2O, a quasi resonant pumping of the nu2 6.18 micron transition by photons of the 6.2 micron PAH band occurs. A strong de-excitation emission line is expected at 6.64 micron.
