Fragmentation of very high energy heavy ions

A stack of CR39 (C12H18O7)n nuclear track detectors with a Cu target was exposed to a 158 A GeV lead ion beam at the CERN-SPS, in order to study the fragmentation properties of lead nuclei. Measurements of the total, break-up and pick-up charge-changing cross sections of ultrarelativistic Pb ions on Cu and CR39 targets are presented and discussed.

Magnetic monopole bibliography

We present a bibliography compilation on magnetic monopoles updated to include references till the end of year 1999. It is intended to contain nearly all the experimental papers on the subject and only the theoretical papers which have some specific experimental implications.

Magnetic monopoles, nuclearites, Q-balls: a qualitative picture

We present qualitative pictures of the structures of magnetic monopoles (MMs), nuclearites (nuggets of strange quark matter, strangelets, surrounded by electrons) and Q-balls (supersymmetric states of squarks, sleptons and Higgs fields). In particular we discuss the relation between their mass and size. MMs, nuclearites and Q-balls could be part of the cold Dark Matter (DM); we consider astrophysical limits on the flux of these particles in the cosmic radiation.

Search for magnetic monopoles with nuclear track detectors

This paper describes an experimental search for GUT magnetic monopoles in the MACRO experiment using the nuclear track subdetector CR39. After discussing the working principle, the charge resolution and the calibration of the detector, the experimental procedure for searching for magnetic monopoles is described. Since no candidates were found, the upper flux limits obtained by the MACRO CR39 used as a "stand alone detector" for magnetic monopoles of different magnetic charges are presented.
