MICADO: first light imager for the E-ELT

MICADO will equip the E-ELT with a first light capability for diffraction limited imaging at near-infrared wavelengths. The instrument's observing modes focus on various flavours of imaging, including astrometric, high contrast, and time resolved. There is also a single object spectroscopic mode optimised for wavelength coverage at moderately high resolution. This contribution provides an overview of the key functionality of the instrument, outlining the scientific rationale for its observing modes. The interface between MICADO and the adaptive optics system MAORY that feeds it is summarised. The design of the instrument is discussed, focussing on the optics and mechanisms inside the cryostat, together with a brief overview of the other key sub-systems.

Parton Models and the elastic scattering of supersymmetric dark matter off nucleons

The consequences of a flavor broken SU(3)_f dynamical parton model are studied in the context of the elastic scattering of supersymmetric dark matter off nucleons. It is shown that the predictions of this model differ considerably from those of the commonly applied `standard' parton model. Some notable properties of the dynamical parton model are finally presented and discussed.

On the role of heavy flavor parton distributions at high energy colliders

We compare `fixed flavor number scheme' (FFNS) and `variable flavor number scheme' (VFNS) parton model predictions at high energy colliders. Based on our recent LO- and NLO-FFNS dynamical parton distributions, we generate radiatively two sets of VFNS parton distributions where also the heavy quark flavors h=c,b,t are considered as massless partons within the nucleon. By studying the role of these distributions in the production of heavy particles (h\bar{h}, t\bar{b}, hW^{+-}, Higgs--bosons, etc.) at high energy ep, p\bar{p} and pp colliders, we show that the VFNS predictions are compatible with the FFNS ones (to within about 10-20% at LHC, depending on the process) when the invariant mass of the produced system far exceeds the mass of the participating heavy quark flavor.

Dynamical NNLO parton distributions and the perturbative stability of F_L(x,Q^2)

It is shown that the previously noted extreme perturbative NNLO/NLO instability of the longitudinal structure function F_L(x,Q^2) is a mere artefact of the commonly utilized `standard' gluon distributions. In particular it is demonstrated that using the appropriate -- dynamically generated -- parton distributions at NLO and NNLO, F_L(x,Q^2) turns out to be perturbatively rather stable already for Q^2 $\geq$ O(2-3 GeV^2).

Dynamical parton distributions of the nucleon and very small-x physics

Utilizing recent DIS measurements (F_{2,L}) and data on dilepton and high-E_{T} jet production we determine the dynamical parton distributions of the nucleon generated radiatively from valence-like positive input distributions at optimally chosen low resolution scales. These are compared with `standard' distributions generated from positive input distributions at some fixed and higher resolution scale. It is shown that up to the next to leading order NLO(\bar{MS}, DIS) of perturbative QCD considered in this paper, the uncertainties of the dynamical distributions are, as expected, smaller than those of their standard counterparts. This holds true in particular in the presently unexplored extremely small-x region relevant for evaluating ultrahigh energy cross sections in astrophysical applications. It is noted that our new dynamical distributions are compatible, within the presently determined uncertainties, with previously determined dynamical parton distributions.

The curvature of $F_2^p(x,Q^2)$ as a probe of the range of validity of perturbative QCD evolutions in the small-$x$ region

Perturbative NLO and NNLO QCD evolutions of parton distributions are studied, in particular in the (very) small-$x$ region, where they are in very good agreement with all recent precision measurements of $F_2^p(x,Q^2)$. These predictions turn out to be also rather insensitive to the specific choice of the factorization scheme ($\bar{\rm MS}$ or DIS). A characteristic feature of perturbative QCD evolutions is a {\em{positive}} curvature of $F_2^p$ which increases as $x$ decreases. This perturbatively stable prediction provides a sensitive test of the range of validity of perturbative QCD.

Parton evolution in the fixed flavor factorization scheme

It is argued that while the scale dependence of the parton distributions in the fixed flavor factorization scheme is governed by three active flavors, the scale dependence of the running coupling should nevertheless be better governed by a variable number of active flavors.

Non-singlet QCD analysis of F_2(x,Q^2) up to NNLO

The significance of NNLO (3-loop) QCD contributions to the flavor non-singlet sector of F_2^ep and F_2^ed has been studied as compared to uncertainties (different factorization schemes, higher twist and QED contributions) of standard NLO (and LO) QCD analyses. The latter effects turn out to be comparable in size to the NNLO contributions. Therefore the minute NNLO effects are not observable with presently available data on non-singlet structure functions.

Radiatively Generated Isospin Violations in the Nucleon and the NuTeV Anomaly

Predictions of isospin asymmetries of valence and sea distributions are presented which are generated by QED leading ${\cal{O}}(α)$ photon bremsstrahlung effects. Together with isospin violations arising from nonperturbative hadronic sources (such as quark and target mass differences) as well as with even a conservative contribution from a strangeness asymmetry ($s\neq \bar{s}$), the discrepancy between the large NuTeV `anomaly' result for $\sin^2θ_W$ and the world average of other measurements is removed.

Radiatively Generated Isospin Violations in the Nucleon

Isospin violating valence and sea distributions are evaluated due to QED leading ${\cal{O}}{(α)}$ corrections to the standard QCD evolution equations. Unique perturbative predictions are obtained within the radiative parton model, and confirm earlier results. Nonperturbative contributions have been estimated and depend on a single free parameter chosen to be the current quark mass. The relevance of our predictions for extracting $\sin^2 θ_W$ from DIS $ν(\barν)N$ data (`NuTeV anomaly') is discussed as well.

Probing the Perturbative NLO Parton Evolution in the Small-$x$ Region

A dedicated test of the perturbative QCD NLO parton evolution in the very small-$x$ region is performed. We find a good agreement with recent precision HERA-data for $F_2^p(x,Q^2)$, as well as with the present determination of the curvature of $F_2^p$. Characteristically, perturbative QCD evolutions result in a positive curvature which increases as $x$ decreases. Future precision measurements in the very small $x$-region, $x<10^{-4}$, could provide a sensitive test of the range of validity of perturbative QCD

On the Determination of Spin-Dependent Parton Distributions in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

New polarized fragmentation functions are introduced and justified, in addition to those conventional ones assumed to be independent of the helicity of the parent parton. It is demonstrated that due to our present ignorance concerning these new parton-spin dependent leading-twist fragmentation functions, it is impossible to utilize current experiments on spin-dependent semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton nucleon scattering to disentangle the separate polarized parton distributions.

The Polarized and Unpolarized Photon Content of the Nucleon

The equivalent photon content of polarized and unpolarized nucleons (protons, neutrons), utilized in Weizsäcker--Williams approximations, are presented. For this purpose a new expression for the elastic photon component of a polarized nucleon is derived. The inelastic photon components are obtained from the corresponding momentum evolution equations subject to the boundary conditions of their vanishing at some low momentum scale. The resulting photon asymmetries, important for estimating cross section asymmetries in photon induced subprocesses are also presented for some typical relevant momentum scales.
