Workshop on Precision Measurements of alphas

These are the proceedings of the "Workshop on Precision Measurements of alphas" held at the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics, Munich, February 9-11, 2011. The workshop explored in depth the determination of alphas(mZ) in the MS-bar scheme from the key categories where high precision measurements are currently being made, including DIS and global PDF fits, tau-decays, electroweak precision observables and Z-decays, event-shapes, and lattice QCD. These proceedings contain a short summary contribution from the speakers, as well as the lists of authors, conveners, participants, and talks.

Duality violations in tau hadronic spectral moments

Evidence is presented for the necessity of including duality violations in a consistent description of spectral function moments employed in the precision determination of $α_s$ from $τ$ decay. A physically motivated ansatz for duality violations in the spectral functions enables us to perform fits to spectral moments employing both pinched and unpinched weights. We describe our analysis strategy and provide some preliminary findings. Final numerical results await completion of an ongoing re-determination of the ALEPH covariance matrices incorporating correlations due to the unfolding procedure which are absent from the currently posted versions. To what extent this issue affects existing analyses and our own work will require further study.

Contribution from Duality Violations to the theoretical error on alpha_s

Duality Violations (DVs) is a nickname for the failure of the Operator Product Expansion to describe QCD correlators on the physical axis. Using a physically motivated ansatz, a fit to the spectral functions allows us to get a quantitative estimate for the amount of DVs present in tau data. The quality of the fit turns out to be better than expected. Since DVs have not been included in the past in the determination of alpha_s, they amount to an additional theoretical error which we estimate could be δalpha_s(m_{tau}) \sim 0.003-0.010 . Our ansatz satisfies, in particular, the 1st Weinberg sum rule, which shows that this sum rule is not enough to force DVs to vanish.

Quenched penguins and the Delta I=1/2 rule

The transformation properties of strong penguin operators under the action of the flavor group change when they are considered as operators in (partially) quenched QCD instead of the unquenched theory. As a result, additional operators and new low-energy constants appear in the effective theory describing non-leptonic kaon decay matrix elements in the partially quenched setting. These new low-energy constants do not have a counterpart in the unquenched theory, and should thus be considered as an artifact of the quenched approximation. Here we consider strong penguin operators consisting of products of two left-handed flavor currents, and give a complete one-loop analysis in the effective theory for K^0 to vacuum and K^+ to pi^+ matrix elements. We find that the new low-energy constants already appear in these matrix elements at leading order. This implies that (partially) quenched lattice computations of for instance the Delta I=1/2 rule are affected by ambiguities intrinsic to the use of the quenched approximation at leading order. The only exception is the partially quenched case with three light sea quarks, consistent with general expectations. Our results are also relevant when the charm quark is kept in the theory.

Duality violations and spectral sum rules

We study the issue of duality violations in the VV-AA vacuum polarization function in the chiral limit. This is done with the help of a model with an expansion in inverse powers of the number of colors, Nc, allowing us to consider resonances with a finite width. Due to these duality violations, the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) and the moments of the spectral function (e.g. the Weinberg sum rules) do not match at finite momentum, and we analyze this difference in detail. We also perform a comparative study of many of the different methods proposed in the literature for the extraction of the OPE parameters and find that, when applied to our model, they all fare quite similarly. In fact, the model strongly suggests that a significant improvement in precision can only be expected after duality violations are included. To this end, we propose a method to parameterize these duality violations. The method works quite well for the model, and we hope that it may also be useful in future determinations of OPE parameters in QCD.

On the effects of (partial) quenching on penguin contributions to K-> pi pi

Recently, we pointed out that chiral transformation properties of strong penguin operators change in the transition from unquenched to (partially) quenched QCD. As a consequence, new penguin-like operators appear in the (partially) quenched theory, along with new low-energy constants, which should be interpreted as a quenching artifact. Here, we extend the analysis to the contribution of the new low-energy constants to the K^0 -> pi^+ pi^- amplitude, at leading order in chiral perturbation theory, and for arbitrary (momentum non-conserving) kinematics. Using these results, we provide a detailed discussion of the intrinsic systematic error due to this (partial) quenching artifact. We also give a simple recipe for the determination of the leading-order low-energy constant parameterizing the new operators in the case of strong $LR$ penguins.

Testing an approximation to large-Nc QCD with a toy model

We consider a simple model of large-Nc QCD defined by a spectrum consisting of an infinite set of equally spaced zero-width vector resonances. This model is an excellent theoretical laboratory for investigating certain approximation schemes which have been used recently in calculations of hadronic parameters, such as the Minimal Hadronic Approximation. We also comment on some of the questions concerning issues of local duality versus global duality and finite-energy sum rules.

The 7/11 rule: an estimate of m_rho/f_pi

We derive an estimate for the ratio of the rho mass and the pion decay constant from an analysis of vector and axial-vector two-point functions using large-Nc, lowest-meson dominance and the operator product expansion, in the chiral limit. We discuss the extension of this analysis to the scalar and pseudoscalar sector. Furthermore, this leads to a successful parameter-free determination of the L_i couplings of the chiral Lagrangian if an improved Nambu-Jona-Lasinio ansatz for Green functions is assumed at low energies.

Gauge-Fixing Approach to Lattice Chiral Gauge Theories

We report on recent progress with the definition of lattice chiral gauge theories, using a lattice action that includes a discretized Lorentz gauge-fixing term. This gauge-fixing term has a unique global minimum, and allows us to use perturbation theory in order to study the influence of the gauge degrees of freedom on the fermions. For the abelian case, we find, both in perturbation theory and numerically, that the fermions remain chiral, and that there are no doublers. More details on our approach, including a discussion of how we evade the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem, can be found in hep-lat/9709115.

Chiral gauge theories with domain wall fermions

We have investigated a proposal to construct chiral gauge theories on the lattice using domain wall fermions. The model contains two opposite chirality zeromodes, which live on two domain walls. We couple only one of them to a gauge field, but find that mirror fermions which also couple to the gauge field always seem to exist.

Partially quenched QCD and staggered fermions

We summarize results for partially quenched chiral perturbation theory and indicate an application to staggered fermion QCD in which the square root of the determinant is taken to reduce the number of flavors from four to two.
