Equivalence between supersymmetric self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons models coupled to a matter spinor superfield

We study the duality of the supersymmetric self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories coupled to a fermionic matter superfield, using a master action. This approach evades the difficulties inherent to the quartic couplings that appear when matter is represented by a scalar superfield. The price is that the spinorial matter superfield represents a unusual supersymmetric multiplet, whose main physical properties we also discuss.

Position-dependent noncommutativity in quantum mechanics

The model of the position-dependent noncommutativety in quantum mechanics is proposed. We start with a given commutation relations between the operators of coordinates [x^{i},x^{j}]=ω^{ij}(x), and construct the complete algebra of commutation relations, including the operators of momenta. The constructed algebra is a deformation of a standard Heisenberg algebra and obey the Jacobi identity. The key point of our construction is a proposed first-order Lagrangian, which after quantization reproduces the desired commutation relations. Also we study the possibility to localize the noncommutativety.

Dynamical Lorentz symmetry breaking in 3D and charge fractionalization

We analyze the breaking of Lorentz invariance in a 3D model of fermion fields self-coupled through four-fermion interactions. The low-energy limit of the theory contains various sub-models which are similar to those used in the study of the graphene or in the description of irrational charge fractionalization.

Dynamical Lorentz and CPT symmetry breaking in a 4D four-fermion model

In a 4D chiral Thirring model we analyse the possibility that radiative corrections may produce spontaneous breaking of Lorentz and CPT symmetry. By studying the effective potential, we verified that the chiral current $\barψγ^μ γ_5 ψ$ may assume a nonzero vacuum expectation value which triggers the Lorentz and CPT violations. Furthermore, by making fluctuations on the minimum of the potential we dynamically induce a bumblebee like model containing a Chern-Simons term.

On duality of the noncommutative Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory

We study the possibility of establishing the dual equivalence between the noncommutative Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory and the noncommutative self-dual theory. It turns to be that whereas in the commutative case the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory can be mapped into the sum of the self-dual theory and the Chern-Simons theory, in the noncommutative case such a mapping is possible only for the theory with the modified Maxwell term.

Spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking in a supersymmetric Chern-Simons model

This works presents a perturbative analysis of the supersymmetric Chern-Simons model in three spacetime dimensions coupled to a Higgs field, using the superfield formalism. We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the U(1) gauge symmetry and evaluate the first quantum corrections to the effective action in the broken phase. We show that the infinite renormalization of the gap equation is enough to ensure the renormalizability of the model at the first loop level.

Anomaly cancellation in three-dimensional noncommutative gauge theories

The anomaly found by Callan and Harvey is shown to be cancelled in a three-dimensional noncommutative gauge theory coupled to a fermion with a mass function depending on one spatial coordinate (domain wall mass). This evaluation has been done for the fermion in the fundamental and adjoint representations of the gauge group in the limit of small noncommutativity $θ$ parameter.

Lorentz violation in the linearized gravity

We study some physical consequences of the introduction of a Lorentz-violating modification term in the linearized gravity, which leads to modified dispersion relations for gravitational waves in the vacuum. We discuss two possible mechanisms for the induction of such a term in the Lagrangian. First, it is generated at the quantum level by a Lorentz-breaking coupling of the gravity field to a spinor field. Second, it appears as consequence of a particular modification of the Poisson algebra of the canonical variables, in the spirit of the so-called ``noncommutative fields approach''.

Scattering of spin 1/2 particles by the 2+1 dimensional noncommutative Aharonov-Bohm potential

In this work we study modifications in the Aharonov-Bohm effect for relativistic spin 1/2 particles due to the noncommutativity of spacetime in $2 + 1$ dimensions. The noncommutativity gives rise to a correction to the Aharonov-Bohm potential which is highly singular at the origin, producing divergences in a perturbative expansion around the usual solution of the free Dirac equation. This problem is surmounted by using a perturbative expansion around the exact solution of the \textit{commutative} Aharonov-Bohm problem. We calculate, in this setting, the scattering amplitude and the corrections to the differential and total cross sections for a spin 1/2 particle, in the small-flux limit.

On the induction of the four-dimensional Lorentz-breaking non-Abelian Chern-Simons action

A four-dimensional Lorentz-breaking non-Abelian Chern-Simons like action is generated as a one-loop perturbative correction via an appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling of the non-Abelian gauge field to the spinor field. This term is shown to be regularization dependent but nevertheless it can be found unambiguously in different regularization schemes at zero and finite temperature.

The three-dimensional noncommutative Gross-Neveu model

This work is dedicated to the study of the noncommutative Gross-Neveu model. As it is known, in the canonical Weyl-Moyal approach the model is inconsistent, basically due to the separation of the amplitudes into planar and nonplanar parts. We prove that if instead a coherent basis representation is used, the model becomes renormalizable and free of the aforementioned difficulty. We also show that, although the coherent states procedure breaks Lorentz symmetry in odd dimensions, in the Gross-Neveu model this breaking can be kept under control by assuming the noncommutativity parameters to be small enough. We also make some remarks on some ordering prescriptions used in the literature.

The three-dimensional non-anticommutative superspace

We propose two alternative formulations for a three-dimensional non-anticommutative superspace in which some of the fermionic coordinates obey Clifford anticommutation relations. For this superspace, we construct the supersymmetry generators satisfying standard anticommutation relations and the corresponding supercovariant derivatives. We formulate a scalar superfield theory in such a superspace and calculate its propagator. We also suggest a prescription for the introduction of interactions in such theories.

Finite-size effects on the phase structure of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

The Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is one of the most frequently used four-fermion models in the study of dynamical symmetry breaking. In particular, the NJL model is convenient for that analysis at finite temperature, chemical potential and size effects, as has been explored in the last decade. With this motivation, we investigate the finite-size effects on the phase structure of the NJL model in $D = 3$ Euclidean dimensions, in the situations that one, two and three dimensions are compactified. In this context, we employ the zeta-function and compactification methods to calculate the effective potential and gap equation. The critical lines that separate trivial and non-trivial fermion mass phases in a second order transition are obtained. We also analyze the system at finite temperature, considering the inverse of temperature as the size of one of the compactified dimensions.

On the duality of three-dimensional superfield theories

Within the superfield approach, we consider the duality between the supersymmetric Maxwell-Chern-Simons and self-dual theories in three spacetime dimensions. Using a gauge embedding method, we construct the dual theory to the self-dual model interacting with a matter superfield, which turns out to be not the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory coupled to matter, but a more complicated model, with a ``restricted'' gauge invariance. We stress the difficulties in dualizing the self-dual field coupled to matter into a theory with complete gauge invariance. After that, we show that the duality, achieved between these two models at the tree level, also holds up to the lowest order quantum corrections.
