Thermal architecture for the QUBIC cryogenic receiver

QUBIC, the QU Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, is a novel forthcoming instrument to measure the B-mode polarization anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The detection of the B-mode signal will be extremely challenging; QUBIC has been designed to address this with a novel approach, namely bolometric interferometry. The receiver cryostat is exceptionally large and cools complex optical and detector stages to 40 K, 4 K, 1 K and 350 mK using two pulse tube coolers, a novel 4He sorption cooler and a double-stage 3He/4He sorption cooler. We discuss the thermal and mechanical design of the cryostat, modelling and thermal analysis, and laboratory cryogenic testing.

Emerging frustration effects in ferromagnetic Ce_2[Pd_{1-x}Ag_x]_2In alloys

Magnetic and thermal properties of Ferromagnetic (FM) Ce_{2.15}(Pd_{1-x}Ag_x)_{1.95}In_{0.9} alloys were studied in order to determine the Quantum Critical Point (QCP) at T_C => 0. The increase of band electrons produced by Pd/Ag substitution depresses T_C(x) from 4.1K down to T_C(x=0.5)=1.1K, with a QCP extrapolated to x_{QCP}~ 0.6. Magnetic susceptibility from T>30K indicates an effective moment slightly decreasing from μ_{eff}=2.56μ_B to 2.4μ_B at x=0.5. These values and the paramagnetic temperature θ_P~ -10K exclude significant Kondo screening effects. The T_C(x) reduction is accompanied by a weakening of the FM magnetization and the emergence of a specific heat C_m(T) anomaly at T*~ 1K, without signs of magnetism detected from AC-susceptibility. The magnetic entropy collected around 4K (i.e. the T_C of the x=0 sample) practically does not change with Ag concentration: S_m(4K)~ 0.8 Rln2, suggesting a progressive transfer of FM degrees of freedom to the non-magnetic (NM) component. No antecedent was found concerning any NM anomaly emerging from a FM system at such temperature. The origin of this anomaly is attributed to an 'entropy bottleneck' originated in the nearly divergent power law dependence for T>T*.

Local character of the highest antiferromagnetic Ce-system CeTi{1-x}Sc{x} Ge

The highest antiferromagnetic (AFM) temperature in Ce based compounds has been reported for CeScGe with Tn=47K, but its local or itinerant nature was not deeply investigated yet. In order to shed more light into this unusually high ordering temperature we have investigated structural, magnetic, transport and thermal properties of CeTi{1-x}Sc{x}Ge alloys within the range of stability of the CeScSi-type structure: 0.25<x<1. Along this concentration range, this strongly anisotropic system presents a complex magnetic phase diagram with a continuous modification of its magnetic behavior, from ferromagnetism (FM)for 0.25<x<0.50 (with 7K<Tc<16K) to AFM for 0.60<x<1 (with 19K<Tn<47K). The onset of the AFM phase is associated to a metamagnetic transition with a critical field increasing from H{cr}=0 at x~0.55 to ~6Tesla at x=1, coincident with an increasing contribution of the first excited crystal electric field doublet. At a critical point x{cr}=0.65 a second transition appears at Tl<Tn. In contrast to observations in itinerant systems like CeRh{2}Si{2} or CeRh{3}B{2}, no evidences for significant hybridization of the 4f electrons at large Sc contents were found. Therefore, the exceptionally large Tn of CeScGe can be attributed to an increasing RKKY inter-layer interaction as Sc content grows.

From itinerant to local transformation and critical point in Ni-rich Ce_2(Ni_{1-y}Pd_y)_2Sn

Structural, magnetic (M) and thermal (C_m) studies on Ce_2(Ni_{1-y}Pd_y)_2Sn alloys are presented within the 0<y<0.55 range of concentration, showing evidences for itinerant to local electronic transformation. At variance with RKKY type interactions between localized moments μ_{eff}, the substitution of Ni by isoelectronic Pd leads the antiferromagnetic transition to decrease from T_N~3.8K to ~1.2K between y=0 and 0.48, while M(H) measured at H=5Tesla and 1.8K rises from 0.12 up to 0.75μ_B/Ce-at. Furthermore, the C_m(T_N) jump increases with concentration whereas |θ_P| decreases. The magnetic entropy S_m(T) grows moderately with temperature for y=0 due to a significant contribution of excited levels at low energy, while at y=0.5 it shows a incipient plateau around S_m=Rln2. All these features reflect the progressive ground state transformation of from itinerant to a local character. Another peculiarity of this system is the nearly constant value of C_m(T_N) that ends in an "entropy bottleneck" as T_N decreases. Consequently, the system shows a critical point at y_{cr}~0.48 with signs of ferromagnetic behavior above H_{cr}~0.3T. A splitting of the C_m(T_N) maximum, tuned by field and concentration, indicates a competition between two magnetic phases, with respective peaks at T_N~1.2K and T_I~1.45K.

Suppression of the Shastry-Sutherland phase in Ce$_{2}$Pd$_{2}$Sn at a field induced critical point

The magnetic phase diagram of Ce$_2$Pd$_2$Sn is investigated through the field dependence of thermal, transport and magnetic measurements performed at low temperature. The upper transition, $T_M=4.8$ K is practically not affected by magnetic field up to B=1 T, whereas the lower one $T_C(B)$ rapidly increases from 2.1 K joining $T_M$ in a critical point at $T_{cr}=(4.2\pm 0.3$)K for $B_{cr}=(0.12\pm 0.03)$ T. At that point the intermediate phase, previously described as an unstable Shastry-Sutherland phase, is suppressed. A detailed analysis around the critical point reveals a structure in the maximum of the $\partial M/\partial B(B)$ derivative which could be related to the formation of a novel phase in that critical region.

Operating Water Cherenkov Detectors in high altitude sites for the Large Aperture GRB Observatory

Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) are efficient detectors for detecting GRBs in the 10 GeV - 1 TeV energy range using the single particle technique, given their sensitivity to low energy secondary photons produced by high energy photons when cascading in the atmosphere. The Large Aperture GRB Observatory (LAGO) operates arrays of WCD in high altitude sites (above 4500 m a.s.l.) in Bolivia, Mexico and Venezuela, with planned extension to Peru. Details on the operation and stability of these WCD in remote sites with high background rates of particles will be detailed, and compared to simulations. Specific issues due to operation at high altitude, atmospheric effects and solar activity, as well as possible hardware enhancements will also be presented.

The Large Aperture GRB Observatory

The Large Aperture GRB Observatory (LAGO) is aiming at the detection of the high energy (around 100 GeV) component of Gamma Ray Bursts, using the single particle technique in arrays of Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) in high mountain sites (Chacaltaya, Bolivia, 5300 m a.s.l., Pico Espejo, Venezuela, 4750 m a.s.l., Sierra Negra, Mexico, 4650 m a.s.l). WCD at high altitude offer a unique possibility of detecting low gamma fluxes in the 10 GeV - 1 TeV range. The status of the Observatory and data collected from 2007 to date will be presented.

Water Cherenkov Detectors response to a Gamma Ray Burst in the Large Aperture GRB Observatory

In order to characterise the behaviour of Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) under a sudden increase of 1 GeV - 1 TeV background photons from a Gamma Ray Burst (GRB), simulations were conducted and compared to data acquired by the WCD of the Large Aperture GRB Observatory (LAGO). The LAGO operates arrays of WCD at high altitude to detect GRBs using the single particle technique. The LAGO sensitivity to GRBs is derived from the reported simulations of the gamma initiated particle showers in the atmosphere and the WCD response to secondaries.

The Surface Detector System of the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to study cosmic rays with energies greater than 10^{19} eV. Two sites are envisaged for the observatory, one in each hemisphere, for complete sky coverage. The southern site of the Auger Observatory, now approaching completion in Mendoza, Argentina, features an array of 1600 water-Cherenkov surface detector stations covering 3000 km^2, together with 24 fluorescence telescopes to record the air shower cascades produced by these particles. The two complementary detector techniques together with the large collecting area form a powerful instrument for these studies. Although construction is not yet complete, the Auger Observatory has been taking data stably since January 2004 and the first physics results are being published. In this paper we describe the design features and technical characteristics of the surface detector stations of the Pierre Auger Observatory.

Enhancing the Pierre Auger Observatory to the 10^{17} to 10^{18.5} eV Range: Capabilities of an Infill Surface Array

The Pierre Auger Observatory has been designed to study the highest-energy cosmic rays in nature (E > 10^{18.5} eV). The determination of their arrival direction, energy and composition is performed by the analysis of the atmospheric showers they produce. The Auger Surface Array will consist of 1600 water Cerenkov detectors placed in an equilateral triangular grid of 1.5 km spacing. The aim of this paper is to show that the addition of a "small" area of surface detectors at half or less the above mentioned spacing would allow a dramatic increase of the physical scope of this Observatory, reaching lower energies at which the transition from galactic to extragalactic sources is expected.

The importance of muon information on primary mass discrimination of ultra-high energy cosmic rays

Several methods can be used to perform statistical inference of primary composition of cosmic rays measured with water Cerenkov detectors as those in use at the Pierre Auger Southern Observatory. In the present work we assess the impact of additional information about the number of muons in the air shower, on the problem of statistical primary mass discrimination. Several tools are studied, including neural networks, principal component analysis and traditional methods in current use in the field. For our case study we use hypothetical plastic scintillators as muon counters, buried at the side and outside the shade of the water Cerenkov tanks. The study is extended to protons and Fe nuclei impinging on an array with two different spacings, 750 and 1500 m and, therefore, suitable to the 1-10 EeV energy range. A prototype of such a detector is under construction.

The trigger system of the Pierre Auger Surface Detector: operation, efficiency and stability

The trigger system of the Surface Detector (SD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory is described, from the identification of candidate showers ($E>1$ EeV) at the level of a single station, among a huge background (mainly single muons), up to the selection of real events and the rejection of random coincidences at a higher central trigger level (including the reconstruction accuracy). Efficiency of a single station trigger is evaluated using real data , and the high performance of event selection hierarchy will be demonstrated.

Low temperature magnetic phase diagram of the cubic non-Fermi liquid system CeIn_(3-x)Sn_x

In this paper we report a comprehensive study of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), resistivity (ρ), and specific heat (C_P), down to 0.5 K of the cubic CeIn_(3-x)Sn_x alloy. The ground state of this system evolves from antiferromagnetic (AF) in CeIn_3(T_N=10.2 K) to intermediate-valent in CeSn_3, and represents the first example of a Ce-lattice cubic non-Fermi liquid (NFL) system where T_N(x) can be traced down to T=0 over more than a decade of temperature. Our results indicate that the disappearance of the AF state occurs near x_c ~ 0.7, although already at x ~ 0.4 significant modifications of the magnetic ground state are observed. Between these concentrations, clear NFL signatures are observed, such as ρ(T)\approx ρ_0 + A T^n (with n<1.5) and C_P(T)\propto -T ln(T) dependencies. Within the ordered phase a first order phase transition occurs for 0.25 < x < 0.5. With larger Sn doping, different weak ρ(T) dependencies are observed at low temperatures between x=1 and x=3 while C_P/T shows only a weak temperature dependence.

Study of the Ce(Rh$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$ alloy: evidence for itinerant character of the magnetic order in CeRh$_2$Si$_2$

We present electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements of alloys on the Rh rich side of the phase diagram of the Ce(Rh$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$ system and compare the results with those obtained at intermediate and low Rh concentrations. The analysis of the x-evolution of the entropy and the scaling behaviour of $C_{el}(T)$ and $ρ(T)$ clearly confirm a separation of the magnetic phase diagram into two regions. The region $x\le0.3$, showing a concentration independent characteristic temperature $T_o\approx45 {\rm K}$, while for $x>0.3$ $T_o$ decreases down to $T_o(x=1)\approx15 {\rm K}$. This characteristic temperature is obtained by scaling the $C_{el}(T,x>0.3)$ results as a function of the reduced temperature $T/T_o$. At low Pd-content, $T_N$ decreases very rapidly from $T_N = 36 {\rm K}$ in pure CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ to $T_N=18 {\rm K}$ at x=0.1. With higher Pd concentration it stabilized at $T_N\approx15 {\rm K}$ whereas the magnitude of the anomalies in $C_{el}(T)$ and in the susceptibility around $T_N$ are further reduced and disappear at $x\approx0.3$. This is in contrast to the behavior found on the Pd-rich side, where $T_N$ decreases continuously to zero with increasing Rh content. The pronounced differences observed between both phase boundaries and the drastic effect of doping on the Rh rich side suggest an itinerant character in CeRh$_2$ Si$_2$, in contrast to the localized character of CePd$_2$Si$_2$. A further evidence for the itinerant character in CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ is given by the $ρ(T)$ dependence observed for $x\le0.3$, which scales with $ρ(T)$ of the prototype itinerant compound YCo$_2$.
