Charge radii of Cl isotopes from x-ray spectroscopy of muonic atoms

Nuclear charge radii are vital for nuclear and atomic physics, the determination of fundamental constants, and searches for new physics. Muonic atoms, where a single negative muon orbits a nucleus, are sensitive tools for determining nuclear radii due to the large wavefunction overlap of the muon and nucleus. Here we report on a new measurement of the $2, 3, 4p\to1s$ x-ray energies in muonic $^{35,37}$Cl with uncertainties reaching 18 ppm. By employing a large-scale germanium detector array, it was possible to extract these energies from a high statistics dataset using highly enriched samples of only a few tens of milligrams. Combining these results with state-of-the-art atomic and nuclear theory input, the charge radii of the stable chlorine isotopes were determined to be $R(^{35}\text{Cl}) = 3.3333(23)~fm$ and $R(^{37}\text{Cl}) = 3.3444(23)~fm$. This is an order of magnitude more precise and significantly different from previously tabulated values. Our new values solve a discrepancy observed for the charge radius difference in mirror nuclei, agreeing with the overall global trend. The charge radius difference $\delta \langle r^2 \rangle (^{37}\text{Cl} - {^{35}\text{Cl}}) = -0.0776(64)~fm^2$ we extract is 25 times more precise than the previous values. This precision is crucial for establishing reference values for future laser spectroscopy measurements of radioactive isotopes.

Beam-Normal Single Spin Asymmetry in Elastic Electron Scattering off $^{28}$Si and $^{90}$Zr

We report on a new measurement of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry $A_{\mathrm{n}}$ in the elastic scattering of 570 MeV transversely polarized electrons off $^{28}$Si and $^{90}$Zr at $Q^{2}=0.04\, \mathrm{GeV}^2/c^2$. The studied kinematics allow for a comprehensive comparison with former results on $^{12}$C. No significant mass dependence of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry is observed in the mass regime from $^{12}$C to $^{90}$Zr.

Study of Two-Photon Exchange via the Beam Transverse Single Spin Asymmetry in Electron-Proton Elastic Scattering at Forward Angles over a Wide Energy Range

We report on a new measurement of the beam transverse single spin asymmetry in electron-proton elastic scattering, $A^{ep}_{\perp}$, at five beam energies from 315.1 MeV to 1508.4 MeV and at a scattering angle of $30^{\circ} < θ< 40^{\circ}$. The covered $Q^2$ values are 0.032, 0.057, 0.082, 0.218, 0.613 (GeV/c)$^2$. The measurement clearly indicates significant inelastic contributions to the two-photon-exchange (TPE) amplitude in the low-$Q^2$ kinematic region. No theoretical calculation is able to reproduce our result. Comparison with a calculation based on unitarity, which only takes into account elastic and $\mathrm{πN}$ inelastic intermediate states, suggests that there are other inelastic intermediate states such as $\mathrm{ππN}$, $\mathrm{K Λ}$ and $\mathrm{ηN}$. Covering a wide energy range, our new high-precision data provide a benchmark to study those intermediate states.

Single-Energy Partial Wave Analysis for $π^0$ Photoproduction on Proton with Fixed-$t$ Analyticity Imposed

High precision data of the $γp \to π^0 p$ reaction from its threshold up to $W=2$~GeV have been used in order to perform a single-energy partial wave analysis with minimal model dependence. Continuity in energy was achieved by imposing constraints from fixed-$t$ analyticity in an iterative procedure. Reaction models were only used as starting point in the very first iteration. We demonstrate that with this procedure partial wave amplitudes can be obtained which show only a minimal dependence on the initial model assumptions.

Eta and Etaprime Photoproduction on the Nucleon with the Isobar Model EtaMAID2018

The isobar model EtaMAID has been updated with new and high precision data for eta and etaprime photoproduction on protons and neutrons from MAMI, ELSA, GRAAL and CLAS. The background is described in a recently developed Regge-cut model, and for the resonance part the whole list of nucleon resonances has been investigated with 21 N* states contributing to eta photoproduction and 12 N* states contributing to etaprime photoproduction. A new approach is discussed to avoid double counting in the overlap region of Regge and resonances. A comparison is done among four newly updated partial waves analyses for observables and partial waves. Finally, the possibility of a narrow resonance near W=1900 MeV is discussed, that would be able to explain unexpected energy and angular dependence of observables in p(gamma, etaprime)p near etaprime threshold.

Precision Measurement of sin2(theta_w) at MESA

A forthcoming experiment of low-energy elastic electron proton scattering at the new MESA facility in Mainz is planned to provide a high-precision measurement of the parity-violating polarisation asymmetry. This experiment is expected to lead to a precision determination of the weak mixing angle, competitive with Z-pole data. We discuss the challenges for theory to derive predictions with the required accuracy.

New Measurements of the Transverse Beam Asymmetry for Elastic Electron Scattering from Selected Nuclei

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry $A_n$ in the elastic scattering of 1-3 GeV transversely polarized electrons from $^1$H and for the first time from $^4$He, $^{12}$C, and $^{208}$Pb. For $^1$H, $^4$He and $^{12}$C, the measurements are in agreement with calculations that relate $A_n$ to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange amplitude including inelastic intermediate states. Surprisingly, the $^{208}$Pb result is significantly smaller than the corresponding prediction using the same formalism. These results suggest that a systematic set of new $A_n$ measurements might emerge as a new and sensitive probe of the structure of heavy nuclei.

Quark-nucleon dynamics and Deep Virtual Compton Scattering

We consider deeply virtual Compton scattering and deep inelastic scattering in presence of Regge exchanges that are part of the non-perturbative quark-nucleon amplitude. In particular we discuss contribution from the Pomeron exchange and demonstrate how it leads to Regge scaling of the Compton amplitude. Comparison with HERA data is given.

Dispersion corrections to parity violating electron scattering

We consider the dispersion correction to elastic parity violating electron-proton scattering due to \gammaZ exchange. In a recent publication, this correction was reported to be substantially larger than the previous estimates. In this paper, we study the dispersion correction in greater detail. We confirm the size of the disperion correction to be 6% for the QWEAK experiment designed to measure the proton weak charge. We enumerate parameters that have to be constrained to better than relative 30% in order to keep the theoretical uncertainty for QWEAK under control.

Light-front interpretation of Proton Generalized Polarizabilities

We extend the recently developed formalism to extract light-front quark charge densities from nucleon form factor data to the deformations of these quark charge densities when applying an external electric field. We show that the resulting induced polarizations can be extracted from proton generalized polarizabilities. The available data for the generalized electric polarizabilitiy of the proton yield a pronounced structure in its induced polarization at large transverse distances, which will be pinned down by forthcoming high precision virtual Compton scattering experiments.

Dispersion $γZ$-box correction to the weak charge of the proton

We consider elastic scattering of electrons off a proton target. The parity violating (PV) asymmetry arises at leading order in $α$ due to interference of $γ$ and $Z$ exchange. The radiative corrections to this leading mechanism were calculated in the literature and included in experimental analyses, except for $γZ$ box and cross-box contributions. We present here a dispersion calculation of these corrections in forward kinematics. We demonstrate that at the GeV energies of current PV experiments, such corrections are not suppressed by the small vector weak charge of the electron, as occurs in the atomic PV. Our results suggest that the current theoretical uncertainty in the analysis of the QWEAK experiment might be substantially underestimated, and more accurate account of the dispersion corrections are needed in order to interprete the PV data.

Low energy theorem for virtual Compton scattering and generalized sum rules of the nucleon

We formulate the low energy theorem for virtual Compton scattering off a nucleon and examine its consequences for generalized nucleon polarizabilites. As a result of a new, model independent definition of the low energy limit for VVCS reaction, all generalized sum rules of the nucleon have continuous limit for real photons and obtain contributions from the $t$-channel that were not included previously.

Beam normal spin asymmetry in the equivalent photon approximation

The two-photon exchange contribution to the single spin asymmetries with the spin orientation normal to the reaction plane is discussed for elastic electron-proton scattering in Regge regime. For this, the equivalent photon approximation is adopted. In this case, hadronic part of the two-photon exchange amplitude describes real Compton scattering (RCS). The imaginary part of helicity conserving RCS amplitudes are related to total photoabsorption cross section. The contribution of the photon helicity flipping amplitudes is estimated by the two pion exchange in the $t$-channel. We observe the double logarithmic enhancement in the electron mass but find it's contribution to the asymmetry negligibly small in the forward kinematics. These results are in strong disagreement with the existing calculation.

Beam normal spin asymmetry in elastic lepton-nucleon scattering

We discuss the two-photon exchange contribution to observables which involve lepton helicity flip in elastic lepton-nucleon scattering. This contribution is accessed through the spin asymmetry for a lepton beam polarized normal to the scattering plane. We estimate this beam normal spin asymmetry at large momentum transfer using a parton model and we express the corresponding amplitude in terms of generalized parton distributions.

Generalized sum rules of the nucleon in the constituent quark model

We study the generalized sum rules and polarizabilities of the nucleon in the framework of the hypercentral constituent quark model. We include in the calculation all the well known $3^*$ and $4^*$ resonances and consider all the generalized sum rules for which there are data available. To test the model dependence of the calculation, we compare our results to the results obtained in the harmonic oscillator CQM. We furthermore confront our results to the model-independent sum rules values and to the predictions of the phenomenological MAID model. The CQM calculations provide a good description of most of the presented generalized sum rules in the intermediate $Q^2$ region (above $\sim0.2$ GeV$^2$) while they encounter difficulties in describing these observables at low $Q^2$, where the effects of the pion cloud, not included in the present calculation, are expected to be important.

Generalized sum rules of the nucleon in the CQM

The sum rules serve a powerful tool to study the nucleon structure by providing a bridge between the statical properties of the nucleon (such as electrical charge, and magnetic moment) and the dynamical properties (e.g. the transition amplitudes to excited states) in a wide range of energy and momentum transfer $Q^2$. We study the generalized sum rules of the nucleon in the framework of the constituent quark model. We use two different CQM, the one with the hypercentral potential \cite{hccqm1}, \cite{hccqm2}, \cite{hccqm3}, and with the harmonic oscillator potential \cite{KI}, both with only few parameters fixed to the baryonic spectrum. We confront our results to the model independent sum rules and to the predictions of the phenomenological MAID \cite{MAID} model and find that in all the cases considered, in the intermediate $Q^2$ range (0.2-1.5 GeV$^2$), both CQM models provide a good description of the sum rules on the neutron.

Dispersion relation formalism for virtual Compton scattering off the proton

We present in detail a dispersion relation formalism for virtual Compton scattering (VCS) off the proton from threshold into the $Δ(1232)$-resonance region. Such a formalism can be used as a tool to extract the generalized polarizabilities of the proton from both unpolarized and polarized VCS observables over a larger energy range. We present calculations for existing and forthcoming VCS experiments and demonstrate that the VCS observables in the energy region between pion production threshold and the $Δ(1232)$-resonance show an enhanced sensitivity to the generalized polarizabilities.

Dispersion analysis for generalized spin polarizabilities

We report on a dispersion relation formalism for the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) reaction on the proton, which for the first time allows a dispersive evaluation of 4 generalized polarizabilities. The dispersion formalism provides a new tool to analyze VCS experiments above pion threshold, thus increasing the sensitivity to the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon.
