Enhanced dilepton emission from a phase transition in dense matter

It is demonstrated that the presence of a phase transition in heavy ion collisions, at beam energies that probe dense QCD matter, leads to a significant enhancement of the dilepton yield per produced pion due to the extended emission time. In addition, the temperature of low mass dileptons shows a modest decrease due to the mixed phase. The emission of dileptons in the SIS18-SIS100 beam energies range is studied by augmenting the UrQMD transport model with a realistic density dependent equation of state, as well as two different phase transitions. This is achieved by extending the molecular dynamics interaction part of the UrQMD model to a density dependent interaction potential with a high density minimum leading to a phase transition and metastable coexisting high density states. Together with a high precision measurement these simulations will be able to constrain the existence of a phase transition in QCD up to densities of several times nuclear saturation density.

Phase Transition in Hot Pion Matter

The equation of state for the pion gas is analyzed within the third virial approximation. The second virial coefficient is found from the pion-pion- scattering data, while the third one is considered as a free parameter. The proposed model leads to a first-order phase transition from the pion gas to a more dense phase at the temperature T_pt < 136 MeV. Due to relatively low temperature this phase transition cannot be related to the deconfinement. This suggests that a new phase of hadron matter - 'hot pion liquid' - may exist.

Second Cluster Integral and Excluded Volume Effects for the Pion Gas

The quantum mechanical formula for Mayer's second cluster integral for the gas of relativistic particles with hard-core interaction is derived. The proper pion volume calculated with quantum mechanical formula is found to be an order of magnitude larger than its classical evaluation. The second cluster integral for the pion gas is calculated in quantum mechanical approach with account for both attractive and hard-core repulsive interactions. It is shown that, in the second cluster approximation, the repulsive pion-pion-interactions as well as the finite width of resonances give important but almost canceling contributions. In contrast, an appreciable deviation from the ideal gas of pions and pion resonances is observed beyond the second cluster approximation in the framework of the Van der Waals excluded-volume model.

Running Coupling in the SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory

Scenario according to which the SU(2)-gluodynamics is a theory with a nontrivial fixed point is analyzed from the point of view of the modern Monte-Carlo (MC) lattice data. It is found that an assumption of the first order fixed point g=g_f of the beta function has no contradictions with existing MC lattice data. The beta function parameters are found from the requirement of constant values for critical temperature and string tension in MC lattice calculations at 4/g^2 >= 2.30.
