Quantum vs. Geometric Disorder in a Two-Dimensional Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We present a numerical study of the spin-1/2 bilayer Heisenberg antiferromagnet with random interlayer dimer dilution. From the temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility and a scaling analysis of the spin correlation length we deduce the ground state phase diagram as a function of nonmagnetic impurity concentration p and bilayer coupling g. At the site percolation threshold, there exists a multicritical point at small but nonzero bilayer coupling g_m = 0.15(3). The magnetic properties of the single-layer material La_2Cu_{1-p}(Zn,Mg)_pO_4 near the percolation threshold appear to be controlled by the proximity to this new quantum critical point.

Order Parameter Criticality of the d=3 Random-Field Ising Antiferromagnet Fe(0.85)Zn(0.15)F2

The critical exponent beta =0.16 +- 0.02 for the random-field Ising model order parameter is determined using extinction-free magnetic x-ray scattering for Fe(0.85)Zn(0.15)F2 in magnetic fields of 10 and 11 T. The observed value is consistent with other experimental random-field critical exponents, but disagrees sharply with Monte Carlo and exact ground state calculations on finite-sized systems.

Periodic Density of States Modulations in Superconducting $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$

In this paper we show, using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), the existence of static striped density of electronic states in nearly optimally doped $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ in zero field. The observed modulation is strongest at roughly half the superconducting gap energy and is aligned with the Cu-O bonds, with a periodicity of four lattice constants, exhibiting features characteristic of a two-dimensional system of line objects. These features also exhibit asymmetries between the two orthogonal directions locally, pointing to a possible broken symmetry state (i. e., stripe phase). We further show that the density of states modulation manifests itself as a shift of states from above to below the superconducting gap. The fact that a single energy scale (i. e., the gap) appears for both superconductivity and stripes suggests that these two effects have the same microscopic origin.

Doping dependence of an n-type cuprate superconductor investigated by ARPES

We present an angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) doping dependence study of the n-type cuprate superconductor Nd_2-xCe_xCuO_4, from the half-filled Mott-insulator to the T_c=24K superconductor. In Nd2CuO4, we reveal the charge-transfer band (CTB) for the first time. As electrons are doped into the system, this feature's intensity decreases with the concomitant formation of near-E_F spectral weight. At low doping, the Fermi surface is an electron-pocket (with volume ~ x) centered at (pi,0). Further doping leads to the creation of a new hole-like Fermi surface (volume ~ 1+x) centered at (pi,pi). These findings shed light on the Mott gap, its doping evolution, as well as the anomalous transport properties of the n-type cuprates.

Nature of $e_g$ Electron Order in La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{1+x}$MnO$_4$

Synchrotron x-ray scattering measurements of the low-temperature structure of the single-layer manganese oxide La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{1+x}$MnO$_4$, over the doping range $0.33 \le x \le 0.67$, indicate the existence of three distinct regions: a disordered phase ($x < 0.4$), a charge-ordered phase ($x \ge 0.5$), and a mixed phase ($0.4 \le x < 0.5$). For $x>0.5$, the modulation vector associated with the charge order is incommensurate with the lattice and depends linearly on the concentration of $e_g$ electrons. The primary superlattice reflections are strongly suppressed along the modulation direction and the higher harmonics are weak, implying the existence of a largely transverse and nearly sinusoidal structural distortion, consistent with a charge density wave of the $e_g$ electrons.

Quantum Impurities in the Two-Dimensional Spin One-Half Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

The study of randomness in low-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets is at the forefront of research in the field of strongly correlated electron systems, yet there have been relatively few experimental model systems. Complementary neutron scattering and numerical experiments demonstrate that the spin-diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnet La2Cu(1-z)(Zn,Mg)zO4 is an excellent model material for square-lattice site percolation in the extreme quantum limit of spin one-half. Measurements of the ordered moment and spin correlations provide important quantitative information for tests of theories for this complex quantum-impurity problem.

Anomalous Dispersion of Longitudinal Optical Phonons in $\mathrm{\mathbf{Nd_{1.86}Ce_{0.14}CuO_{4+\bmδ}}}$ Determined by Inelastic X-ray Scattering

The phonon dispersions of $\mathrm{Nd_{1.86}Ce_{0.14}CuO_{4+δ}}$ along the $[ξ,0,0]$ direction have been determined by inelastic x-ray scattering. Compared to the undoped parent compound, the two highest longitudinal phonon branches, associated with the Cu-O bond-stretching and out-of-plane oxygen vibration, are shifted to lower energies. Moreover, an anomalous softening of the bond-stretching band is observed around $\mathbf{q}=(0.2,0,0)$. These signatures provide evidence for strong electron-phonon coupling in this electron-doped high-temperature superconductor.

Preparation and Characterization of Homogeneous YBCO Single Crystals with Doping Level near the SC-AFM Boundary

High-purity and homogeneous YBa2Cu3Oy single crystals with carrier doping level near the AFM-SC boundary have been obtained in the oxygen content range between y = 6.340 and 6.370. The crystals are ortho-II phase at room temperature and undergo the orthorhombic to tetragonal transition at about 140_Degree_C. They show sharp superconducting transitions, with Tc between 4 and 20 K. Tc changes by 0.8 K when the oxygen content y is changed by 0.001, and is also sensitive to annealing conditions near room temperature, due to the dependence of doping on oxygen ordering correlation lengths. Crystals with oxygen content y lower than 6.345 are non-superconducting.

Electronic structure of the trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$

The low-energy electronic structure of the trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ near optimal doping is investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The normal state quasiparticle dispersion and Fermi surface, and the superconducting d-wave gap and coherence peak are observed and compared with those of single and bilayer systems. We find that both the superconducting gap magnitude and the relative coherence-peak intensity scale linearly with $T_c$ for various optimally doped materials. This suggests that the higher $T_c$ of the trilayer system should be attributed to parameters that simultaneously enhance phase stiffness and pairing strength.

Anomalous electronic structure and pseudogap effects in Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4

We report a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopic (ARPES) study of the electron-doped (n-type) cuprate superconductor Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4. We observe regions along the Fermi surface where the near-E_F intensity is suppressed and the spectral features are broad in a manner reminiscent of the high-energy ``pseudogap'' in the underdoped p-type (hole doped) cuprates. However, instead of occurring near the (pi, 0) region, as in the p-type materials, this pseudogap falls near the intersection of the underlying Fermi surface with the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone boundary.

Nature of the Electronic Excitations near the Brillouin Zone Boundary of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

Based on angle resolved photoemission spectra measured on different systems at different dopings, momenta and photon energies, we show that the anomalously large spectral linewidth in the $(π,0)$ region of optimal doped and underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ has significant contributions from the bilayer splitting, and that the scattering rate in this region is considerably smaller than previously estimated. This new picture of the electronic excitation near $(π,0)$ puts additional experimental constraints on various microscopic theories and data analysis.

Neutron Scattering study of Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2

We report a neutron scattering study on the tetragonal compound Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2, which has two-dimensional (2D) interpenetrating Cu_I and Cu_{II} subsystems, each forming a S=1/2 square lattice quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (SLQHA). The mean-field ground state is degenerate, since the inter-subsystem interactions are geometrically frustrated. Magnetic neutron scattering experiments show that quantum fluctuations lift the degeneracy and cause a 2D Ising ordering of the Cu_{II} subsystem. Due to quantum fluctuations a dramatic increase of the Cu_I out-of-plane spin-wave gap is also observed. The temperature dependence and the dispersion of the spin-wave energy are quantitatively explained by spin-wave calculations which include quantum fluctuations explicitly. The values for the nearest-neighbor superexchange interactions between the Cu_I and Cu_{II} ions and between the Cu_{II} ions are determined experimentally to be J_{I-II} = -10(2)meV and J_{II}= 10.5(5)meV, respectively. Due to its small exchange interaction, J_{II}, the 2D dispersion of the Cu_{II} SLQHA can be measured over the whole Brillouin zone with thermal neutrons, and a novel dispersion at the zone boundary, predicted by theory, is confirmed. The instantaneous magnetic correlation length of the Cu_{II} SLQHA is obtained up to a very high temperature, T/J_{II}\approx 0.75. This result is compared with several theoretical predictions as well as recent experiments on the S=1/2 SLQHA.

Energy Spectrum of Spin Fluctuations in Superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4 (0.10 < x < 0.25)

The energy spectrum of incommensurate spin fluctuations in superconducting Sr-doped La2CuO4 has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. An energy gap in the spin excitation spectrum is observed in the superconducting state of optimally doped (x=0.15) and slightly overdoped (x=0.18) samples. At temperatures well below Tc, the incommensurate peaks diminish rapidly in intensity with decreasing energy below ~8meV and merge into the background below ~3.5meV for x=0.15 and ~4.5meV for x=0.18. For both samples, the energy spectrum of the q-integrated spin susceptibility, x"(w), exhibits an enhancement around 7meV, which is caused by a broadening in the momentum width of the incommensurate peaks. The gap-like structure in the energy spectrum and the enhancement of x"(w) survive at Tc. On the other hand, for both underdoped (x=0.10) and heavily overdoped (x=0.25) samples there is neither a clear energy gap nor an enhancement of x"(w) below Tc.

Freezing of anisotropic spin clusters in La1.98Sr0.02CuO4

A spin-glass compound, La$_{1.98}$Sr$_{0.02}$CuO$_4$, shows quasi-three-dimensional magnetic ordering below $\sim$40 K. A remarkable feature is that the magnetic correlation length along the orthorhombic $a\rm_{ortho}$ axis is much longer than that along the $b\rm_{ortho}$ axis, suggesting that the spin structure is closely related to the diagonal stripe structure. The spin-glass state can be expressed as a random freezing of quasi-three-dimensional spin clusters with anisotropic spin correlations ($ξ'_a\sim160$ Å, $ξ'_b\sim25$ Å, and $ξ'_c\sim4.7$ Åat 1.6 K). The new magnetic state is important as an intermediate phase between the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordered phase in La$_2$CuO$_4$ and the incommensurate phase in La$_{1.95}$Sr$_{0.05}$CuO$_4$ in which the positions of the incommensurate peaks are rotated by 45$^\circ$ in reciprocal space about ($π$,$π$) from those observed in the superconducting La$_2$CuO$_4$ compounds.

Instantaneous Spin Correlations in La2CuO4

We have carried out a neutron scattering study of the instantaneous spin-spin correlations in La2CuO4 (T_N = 325 K) over the temperature range 337 K to 824 K. Incident neutron energies varying from 14.7 meV to 115 meV have been employed in order to guarantee that the energy integration is carried out properly. The results so-obtained for the spin correlation length as a function of temperature when expressed in reduced units agree quantitatively both with previous results for the two dimensional (2D) tetragonal material Sr2CuO2Cl2 and with quantum Monte Carlo results for the nearest neighbor square lattice S=1/2 Heisenberg model. All of the experimental and numerical results for the correlation length are well described without any adjustable parameters by the behavior predicted for the quantum non-linear sigma model in the low temperature renormalized classical regime. The amplitude, on the other hand, deviates subtly from the predicted low temperature behavior. These results are discussed in the context of recent theory for the 2D quantum Heisenberg model.

Monte Carlo Study of Correlations in Quantum Spin Chains at Non-Zero Temperature

Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains with various spin values ($S=1/2,1,3/2,2,5/2$) are studied numerically with the quantum Monte Carlo method. Effective spin $S$ chains are realized by ferromagnetically coupling $n=2S$ antiferromagnetic spin chains with $S=1/2$. The temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility, the staggered susceptibility, and the static structure factor peak intensity are computed down to very low temperatures, $T/J \approx 0.01$. The correlation length at each temperature is deduced from numerical measurements of the instantaneous spin-spin correlation function. At high temperatures, very good agreement with exact results for the classical spin chain is obtained independent of the value of $S$. For $S$=2 chains which have a gap $Δ$, the correlation length and the uniform susceptibility in the temperature range $Δ< T < J$ are well predicted by a semi-classical theory due to Damle and Sachdev.

Spin Correlations in the Two-Dimensional Spin-5/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Rb2MnF4

We report a neutron scattering study of the instantaneous spin correlations in the two-dimensional spin S=5/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Rb_2MnF_4. The measured correlation lengths are quantitatively described, with no adjustable parameters, by high-temperature series expansion results and by a theory based on the quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation. Conversely, we find that the data, which cover the range from about 1 to 50 lattice constants, are outside of the regime corresponding to renormalized classical behavior of the quantum non-linear sigma model. In addition, we observe a crossover from Heisenberg to Ising critical behavior near the Neel temperature; this crossover is well described by a mean-field model with no adjustable parameters.

Correlations and Néel Order of Randomly Diluted Quantum Spin Ladders

We present a Monte Carlo study of the correlation length $ξ$ of randomly diluted antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders, composed of two spin--1/2 chains. For weak and intermediate inter--chain couplings, $J_{\bot}/J \leq 1$, we find an enhancement of correlations that is strongest for a fraction $z^* \approx J_{\bot}/(8J)$ of dilutants. We are able to access the experimentally relevant low--temperature regime, $T/J \approx 1/500$, and find that the recently inferred Néel temperature of $Sr(Cu_{1-z}Zn_z)_2O_3$ corresponds to a curve of constant correlation length $ξ\approx 18$ of the single diluted ladder with $J_{\bot}/J \alt 1/2$. The primary reason for the Néel ordering is argued to be a strong enhancement of two--dimensional correlations due to a Cu--Sr--Cu exchange coupling of $\approx 10 meV$ in the stacking direction of the ladders.
