Probing orbital fluctuations in RVO3 (R = Y, Gd, or Ce) by ellipsometry

We study optical excitations across the Mott gap in the multi-orbital Mott-Hubbard insulators RVO3. The multi-peak structure observed in the optical conductivity can be described consistently in terms of the different 3d^3 multiplets or upper Hubbard bands. The spectral weight is very sensitive to nearest-neighbor spin-spin and orbital-orbital correlations and thus shows a pronounced dependence on both temperature and polarization. Comparison with theoretical predictions based on either rigid orbital order or strong orbital fluctuations clearly rules out the latter. Both, the line shape and the temperature dependence give clear evidence for the importance of excitonic effects.

CaCrO3: an anomalous antiferromagnetic metallic oxide

Combining infrared reflectivity, transport, susceptibility and several diffraction techniques, we find compelling evidence that CaCrO3 is a rare case of a metallic and antiferromagnetic transition-metal oxide with a three-dimensional electronic structure. LSDA calculations correctly describe the metallic behavior as well as the anisotropic magnetic ordering pattern of C type: The high Cr valence state induces via sizeable pd hybridization remarkably strong next-nearest neighbor interactions stabilizing this ordering. The subtle balance of magnetic interactions gives rise to magneto-elastic coupling, explaining pronounced structural anomalies observed at the magnetic ordering transition.

The c-axis optical sum rule and possible new collective mode in LSCO

We present the c-axis optical conductivity $σ_{1c}(ω, T)$ of underdoped ($x$ = 0.12) and optimally doped ($x$ = 0.15) LSCO from 4 meV to 1.8 eV obtained by a combination of reflectivity and transmission spectra. In addition to the opening of the superconducting gap, we observe an {\it increase} of conductivity above the gap up to 270 meV with a maximal effect at about 120 meV. This may indicate a new collective mode at a surprisingly large energy scale. The Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule is violated for both doping levels. Although the relative value of the violation is much larger for the underdoped sample, the absolute increase of the low-frequency spectral weight, including that of the condensate, is higher in the optimally doped regime. Our results resemble in many respects the observations in YBCO.

Magnetic excitations in two-leg spin 1/2 ladders: experiment and theory

Magnetic excitations in two-leg S=1/2 ladders are studied both experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally, we report on the reflectivity, the transmission and the optical conductivity sigma(omega) of undoped La_x Ca_14-x Cu_24 O_41 for x=4, 5, and 5.2. Using two different theoretical approaches (Jordan-Wigner fermions and perturbation theory), we calculate the dispersion of the elementary triplets, the optical conductivity and the momentum-resolved spectral density of two-triplet excitations for 0.2 <= J_parallel/J_perpendicular <= 1.2. We discuss phonon-assisted two-triplet absorption, the existence of two-triplet bound states, the two-triplet continuum, and the size of the exchange parameters.

ESR study of (Sr,La,Ca)_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41}

We report an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of single crystals of the spin-chain spin-ladder compound (Sr,La,Ca)_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41}. The data suggest that in intrinsically hole doped Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41} only a small amount of holes is transferred from the chains to the ladders with increasing x, resulting in a crossover from spin dimerized to uniform spin chains. In the samples of La_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41} with reduced hole content a very broad signal is observed in the paramagnetic state, indicative of a surprisingly strong anisotropy of the nearest neighbor exchange in the chains.

Optical spectroscopy of (La,Ca)14Cu24O41 spin ladders: comparison of experiment and theory

Transmission and reflectivity of La_x Ca_14-x Cu_24 O_41 two-leg spin-1/2 ladders were measured in the mid-infrared regime between 500 and 12000 1/cm. This allows us to determine the optical conductivity sigma_1 directly and with high sensitivity. Here we show data for x=4 and 5 with the electrical field polarized parallel to the rungs (E||a) and to the legs (E||c). Three characteristic peaks are identified as magnetic excitations by comparison with two different theoretical calculations.

Observation of two-magnon bound states in the two-leg ladders of (Ca,La)14Cu24O41

Phonon-assisted 2-magnon absorption is studied at T=4 K in the spin-1/2 two-leg ladders of Ca_14-x La_x Cu_24 O_41 (x=5 and 4) for polarization of the electrical field parallel to the legs and the rungs, respectively. Two peaks at about 2140 and 2800 1/cm reflect van-Hove singularities in the density of states of the strongly dispersing 2-magnon singlet bound state, and a broad peak at about 4000 1/cm is identified with the 2-magnon continuum. Two different theoretical approaches (Jordan-Wigner fermions and perturbation theory) describe the data very well for J_parallel = 1050 - 1100 1/cm and J_parallel / J_perp = 1 - 1.1. A striking similarity of the high-energy continuum absorption of the ladders and of the undoped high T_c cuprates is observed.

C-axis optical properties of high Tc cuprates

A review is given of the experimental status of the interlayer coupling energy in the cuprates. A second c-axis plasmon is identified in the double layer compound Y123 for various dopings. The anomalous transport properties along the c-direction and in the planar directions are compared to model calculations based on strongly anisotropic scattering. An excellent description of the optical data at optimal doping is obtained if an anomalously large anisotropy of the scattering rate between cold spots and hot spots is assumed. This raises questions as to the physical meaning of these parameters.

Mid-infrared absorption in YBa2Cu3O6: Failure of spin-wave theory in undoped cuprates?

The optical conductivity sigma (omega) of undoped YBa2Cu3O6 is studied in detail in the mid-infrared range. Substitutions on all but the Ba site are used to identify the prominent absorption processes at 2800 and 3800 cm^-1. Experimental evidence for bimagnon-plus-phonon absorption is collected. A more critical analysis of the lineshape and the spectral weight reveals the limits of this approach. Although phonon-2-magnon multiple scattering seems to reproduce the lineshape, the necessary coupling is unrealistically large. The strong increase of high frequency spectral weight with increasing temperature makes the failure of spin-wave theory even more evident.

Observation of out-of-phase bilayer plasmons in YBa_2Cu_3O_7-delta

The temperature dependence of the c-axis optical conductivity σ(ω) of optimally and overdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x (x=6.93 and 7) is reported in the far- (FIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) range. Below T_c we observe a transfer of spectral weight from the FIR not only to the condensate at ω= 0, but also to a new peak in the MIR. This peak is naturally explained as a transverse out-of-phase bilayer plasmon by a model for σ(ω) which takes the layered crystal structure into account. With decreasing doping the plasmon shifts to lower frequencies and can be identified with the surprising and so far not understood FIR feature reported in underdoped bilayer cuprates.

Global and Local Measures of the Intrinsic Josephson Coupling in Tl2Ba2CuO6

The Intlerlayer Josephson coupling between the planes of Tl2Ba2CuO6 was determined using infrared spectroscopy and magnetic flux vortex imaging. These methods give a consistent value of $ω_J$= 28 cm$^{-1}$ which, when combined with the condensation energy produces a discrepancy of at least an order of magnitude with deductions based on the interlayer tunneling model.

Charged Magnons in NaV2O5

We investigated the temperature-dependent optical conductivity of NaV2O5 in the energy range 4 meV-4 eV. The intensities and the polarization dependence of the detected electronic excitations give a direct indication for a broken-parity electronic ground-state and for a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure of the system in the high-temperature phase. A direct two-magnon optical absorption process, proposed in this Letter, is in quantitative agreement with the optical data. By analyzing the optically allowed phonons at various temperatures above and below the phase transition, we conclude that a second-order change to a larger unit cell takes place below 34 K.
