GraphShed: A Data-derived Graph-based waterShed Group Finder

This study introduces GraphShed, a data-derived group-finder that applies top-down watershed segmentation to Voronoi-induced graphs, identifying galaxy systems directly from the density field via a GraphShed-derived linking length, with no density thresholds or tunable parameters. A GraphShed galaxy group catalog compared to a Friends-of-Friends (FoF) catalog built from the IllustrisTNG100-1 simulation with a box size of $\sim 75$ Mpc/h yielding $1067$ and $987$ systems, respectively. The GraphShed-derived linking length adapts to the global clustering power of the sample, varying by $\sim 18 \%$ relative to FoF across different sample selections; thus, catalog differences originate in the watershed segmentation. Cross-catalog comparison shows that $\sim 58 \%$ of FoF systems are identically reproduced by GraphShed, $\sim 5 \%$ are completely removed, and the remainder are partially shaved and/or split into multiple systems. While the $M_{200}$ distributions of the two catalogs are statistically consistent, other structural properties including, $R_{200}$, sphericity, compactness, spin, and centroid shift, differ significantly in at least some richness ranges. The unweighted two-point correlation function of GraphShed systems exhibits a higher amplitude on small scales, $r \lesssim 1$ Mpc/h, and agrees with FoF for $r\gtrsim 5$ Mpc/h. A velocity-based classification reveals that GraphShed resolves more interacting pairs than FoF, demonstrating its ability to distinguish nearby overdense structures that position-only methods merge into single systems. These results demonstrate that GraphShed preserves cosmological statistics while providing a more resolved detection of galaxy systems and their dynamical interactions.

Quantifying Weighted Morphological Content of Large-Scale Structures via Simulation-Based Inference

We perform a simulation-based forecasting analysis to compare the cosmological constraining power of higher-order summary statistics of the large-scale structure, the Minkowski Functionals (MFs) and a class weighted morphological measure known as the Conditional Moments of Derivatives (CMD), with that of the redshift-space halo power spectrum multipoles (PS), with a particular focus on their sensitivity to nonlinear and anisotropic features in redshift space. Our analysis relies on halo catalogs from the Big Sobol Sequence simulations at redshift $z=0.5$, employing a likelihood-free inference framework implemented via neural posterior estimation. At the fiducial Quijote cosmology and for a Gaussian smoothing scale of $R=15\,h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}$, CMD provide systematically tighter constraints than MFs. Combining MFs and CMD into a joint estimator improves the precision by $27\%^{+9\%}_{-5\%}$ for $σ_8$ and $26\%^{+7\%}_{-5\%}$ for $Ω_{\mathrm{m}}$ relative to MFs alone, highlighting the complementary anisotropy-sensitive information captured by the CMD in contrast to the scalar morphological content encapsulated by the MFs. We compare the combined statistic MFs+CMD with the PS at matched effective scales ($k_{\max}\simeq0.16\,h\,\mathrm{Mpc^{-1}}$) under three halo-selection conditions: all halos, fixed number density, and mass-selected ($M>3\times10^{13}\,h^{-1}M_\odot$). In the mass-selected configuration, the (weighted) morphological estimator outperforms the power spectrum by $45\%^{+20\%}_{-9\%}$ for $σ_8$ and $43\%^{+10\%}_{-7\%}$ for $Ω_{\mathrm{m}}$. We also extend the simulation-based forecast analysis across a continuous range of cosmological parameters and multiple smoothing scales for morphological measures.

Cosmic Strings-induced CMB anisotropies in light of Weighted Morphology

Motivated by the morphological measures in assessing the geometrical and topological properties of a generic cosmological stochastic field, we propose an extension of the weighted morphological measures, specifically the $n$th conditional moments of derivative (cmd-$n$). This criterion assigns a distinct weight to each excursion set point based on the associated field. We apply the cmd-$n$ on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) to identify the cosmic string networks (CSs) through their unique Gott-Kaiser-Stebbins effect on the temperature anisotropies. We also formulate the perturbative expansion of cmd-$n$ for the weak non-Gaussian regime up to $\mathcal{O}(σ_0^3)$. We propose a comprehensive pipeline designed to analyze the morphological properties of string-induced CMB maps within the flat sky approximation. To evaluate the robustness of our proposed criteria, we employ string-induced high-resolution flat-sky CMB simulated patches of $7.2$ deg$^2$ size with a resolution of $0.42$ arc-minutes. Our results demonstrate that the minimum detectable value of cosmic string tension is $Gμ\gtrsim 1.9\times 10^{-7}$ when a noise-free map is analyzed with normalized cmd-$n$. Whereas for the ACT, CMB-S4, and Planck-like experiments at 95.45\% confidence level, the normalized cmd-$n$ can distinguish the CSs network for $Gμ\gtrsim2.9 \times 10^{-7}$, $Gμ\gtrsim 2.4\times 10^{-7}$ and $Gμ\gtrsim 5.8\times 10^{-7}$, respectively. The normalized cmd-$n$ exhibits a significantly enhanced capability in detecting CSs relative to the Minkowski Functionals.

Imprint of massive neutrinos on Persistent Homology of large-scale structure

Exploiting the Persistent Homology technique and its complementary representations, we examine the footprint of summed neutrino mass ($M_ν$) in the various density fields simulated by the publicly available Quijote suite. The evolution of topological features by utilizing the super-level filtration on three-dimensional density fields at zero redshift, reveals a remarkable benchmark for constraining the cosmological parameters, particularly $M_ν$ and $σ_8$. The abundance of independent closed surfaces (voids) compared to the connected components (clusters) and independent loops (filaments), is more sensitive to the presence of $M_ν$ for $R=5$ Mpc $h^{-1}$ irrespective of whether using the total matter density field ($m$) or CDM+baryons field ($cb$). Reducing the degeneracy between $M_ν$ and $σ_8$ is achieved via Persistent Homology for the $m$ field but not for the $cb$ field. The uncertainty of $M_ν$ at $1σ$ confidence interval from the joint analysis of Persistent Homology vectorization for the $m$ and $cb$ fields smoothed by $R=5$ Mpc $h^{-1}$ at $z=0$ reaches $0.0152$ eV and $0.1242$ eV, respectively. Noticing the use of the 3-dimensional underlying density field at $z=0$, the mentioned uncertainties can be treated as the theoretical lower limits.

Probing the Anisotropy and Non-Gaussianity in the Redshift Space through the Conditional Moments of the First Derivative

Focusing on the redshift space observations with plane-parallel approximation and relying on the rotational dependency of the general definition of excursion sets, we introduce the so-called conditional moments of the first derivative ($cmd$) measures for the smoothed matter density field in three dimensions. We derive the perturbative expansion of $cmd$ for the real space and redshift space where peculiar velocity disturbs the galaxies' observed locations. Our criteria can successfully recognize the contribution of linear Kaiser and Finger-of-God effects. Our results demonstrate that the $cmd$ measure has significant sensitivity for pristine constraining the redshift space distortion parameter $β=f/b$ and interestingly, the associated normalized quantity in the Gaussian linear Kaiser limit has only $β$ dependency. Implementation of the synthetic anisotropic Gaussian field approves the consistency between the theoretical and numerical results. Including the first-order contribution of non-Gaussianity perturbatively in the $cmd$ criterion implies that the N-body simulations for the Quijote suite in the redshift space have been mildly skewed with a higher value for the threshold greater than zero. The non-Gaussianity for the perpendicular direction to the line of sight in the redshift space for smoothing scales $R\gtrsim 20$ Mpc h$^{-1}$ is almost the same as the real space. In contrast, the non-Gaussianity along the line of sight direction in redshift space is magnified. The Fisher forecasts indicate an almost significant enhancement in constraining the cosmological parameters, $Ω_m$, $σ_8$, and $n_s$ when using $cmd+cr$ jointly.
