SKA VLBI survey of the Southern sky for astrometry, geodesy, and astrophysics

The development of SKA will open the opportunity to run dedicated VLBI surveys of the Southern sky and observe sources not visible at radio telescopes located in the Northern hemisphere. These surveys will allow for doing geodesy with a Southern hemisphere-centered network, increase the density of compact radio sources that can be used as calibrators, further extend the celestial reference frame to deep south, and facilitate high-precision differential astrometry for a wide range of applications. Achieving a deep completeness level and determining the parsec-scale properties of extragalactic radio sources is crucial for multi-wavelength and multi-messenger astrophysics. This includes supporting Cherenkov and neutrino telescope science cases, as well as joint VLBI-Gaia studies of active galaxies.

Correlation between superfluid density and transition temperature in infinite-layer nickelate superconductor $Nd_{1-x}Sr_xNiO_2$

A strong correlation between zero-temperature superfluid density ($ρ_{s0}$) and transition temperature ($T_c$) is considered as a hallmark of unconventional superconductivity. However, their relationship has yet to be unveiled in nickelates due to sample inhomogeneity. Here we perform local susceptometry on an infinite-layer nickelate superconductor $Nd_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}NiO_2$. The sample shows inhomogeneous superfluid density and $T_c$ on micron-scale. The spatial statistics for different scan areas reveal a linear dependence of local $T_c$ on $ρ_{s0}$ for $T_c$>8 K and a sub-linear one for $T_c$<8 K. Remarkably, the overall relationship is reminiscent of that reported in overdoped cuprate superconductors, hinting at a close connection between them.

A Collection of German Science Interests in the Next Generation Very Large Array

The Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) is a planned radio interferometer providing unprecedented sensitivity at wavelengths between 21 cm and 3 mm. Its 263 antenna element array will be spatially distributed across North America to enable both superb low surface brightness recovery and sub-milliarcsecond angular resolution imaging. The project was developed by the international astronomy community under the lead of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), and is anticipated to be built between 2027 and 2037. Two workshops have been held in 2022 and 2023 with the goal to discuss and consolidate the scientific interests in the ngVLA within the German astronomical community. This community paper constitutes a collection of 48 science ideas which the German community aims to pursue with the ngVLA in the 2030s. This is not a complete list and the ideas are not developed at the level of a "Science Book", such that the present document is mainly meant provide a basis for further discussion within the community. As such, additional contributions are welcome, and will be considered for inclusion in future revisions.

Towards an astronomical use of new-generation geodetic observations. I. From the correlator to full-polarization images

Context. The current algorithms used for the calibration and analysis of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) networks that only use linear polarizers (as is the case of the VLBI Global Observing System, VGOS) do not properly account for instrumental and source-intrinsic polarimetry, which can cause errors in geodetic and astronomical products. Aims. We aim to develop a calibration pipeline for VLBI interferometers that observe in a basis of linear polarization, as is the case of VGOS. The products from this pipeline can be used to obtain valuable full-polarization astronomical information from the observed sources, and they can be used to potentially improve the geodetic results. Methods. We used the algorithm PolConvert to write the correlation products in a basis of circular polarization that is compatible with the standard VLBI calibration procedures. In addition to this, we implemented a wide-band global fringe-fitting algorithm that accounts for dispersive effects (ionospheric delay) and allows us to perform full-polarization imaging of all the observed sources, covering the whole frequency band of VGOS. Results. We present the outcome of our pipeline applied to a global IVS VGOS epoch of observations and show example imaging results in total intensity and polarization. We also discuss issues encountered during the analysis and suggest points of improvement in the VGOS system for an optimum geodetic and astronomical exploitation of this interferometer.

Comparison on PMT Waveform Reconstructions with JUNO Prototype

JUNO is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and rich in many other neutrino topics. A prototype is designed and set up for better understanding sub-systems of future detector. The preliminary results show that its threshold reaches ~0.3MeV with trigger rate ~290 Hz on the ground with cosmic muon rate ~35 Hz. Aiming for a better detector understanding from PMT signal, three reconstruction algorithms are compared for PMT waveforms with different overshoot ratios, including charge integration, waveform fitting, and deconvolution. It is concluded that the three methods have similar performance on uncertainty and systematic bias while deconvolution algorithm is best to handle larger overshoot and the simplest charge integration could be considered with controlled overshoot for future fast preliminary reconstruction.

PMT overshoot study for JUNO prototype detector

The quality of PMT signal is one of the key items for a large and high precision neutrino experiment, like Daya Bay, JUNO, while most of the experiments are affected by the PMT signal overshoot from its positive HV-single cable scheme. For JUNO prototype detector, we have a detailed study on the PMT overshoot and successfully reduced the ratio of overshoot amplitude to signal to ~1% from previous typical ~10%, with no affection to PMT other parameters. Furthermore, we calculated that the overshoot is a result of discharging of capacitors in the HV-signal splitter and the PMT voltage divider. The study result is extremely important for JUNO and other similar experiments.

Study of x-ray emission enhancement via high contrast femtosecond laser interacting with solid foil

We studied the hard x-ray emission and the K-alpha x-ray conversion efficiency produced by 60 fs high contrast frequency doubled Ti: sapphire laser pulse focused on Cu foil target. Cu K-alpha photon emission obtained with second harmonic laser pulse is more intense than the case of fundamental laser pulse. The Cu K-alpha conversion efficiency shows strong dependence on laser nonlinearly skewed pulse shape and reaches the maximum value 4x10-4 with 100 fs negatively skewed pulse. It shows the electron spectrum shaping contribute to the increase of conversion efficiency. Particle-in-cell simulations demonstrates that the application of high contrast laser pulses will be an effective method to optimize the x-ray emission, via the Enhanced Vacuum Heating mechanism.
