Scalar-isovector K K-bar production close to threshold

The reaction pp -> d K^+ K^0-bar has been investigated at excess energies Q = 47.4 and 104.7 MeV above the K^+ K^0-bar threshold at COSY-Juelich. Coincident dK^+ pairs were detected with the ANKE spectrometer, and events with a missing K^0-bar invariant-mass subsequently identified. The joint analysis of invariant-mass and angular distributions reveals s-wave dominance between the two kaons, in conjunction with a p-wave between the deuteron and the kaon pair, i.e. K K-bar production via the a_0^+(980) channel. Integration of the differential distributions yields total cross sections of sigma(pp -> d K^+ K^0-bar) = (38 +/- 2(stat) +/- 14(syst)) nb and 190 +/- 4(stat) +/- 39(syst)) nb for the low and high Q values, respectively.

Precision measurement of the quasi-free pn->dphi reaction close to threshold

The quasi-free pn->dphi reaction has been studied at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-Juelich, using the internal proton beam incident on a deuterium cluster-jet target and detecting a fast deuteron in coincidence with the K+K- decay of the phi-meson. The energy dependence of the total and differential cross sections are extracted for excess energies up to 80 MeV by determining the Fermi momentum of the target neutron on an event-by-event basis. Though these cross sections are consistent with s-wave production, the kaon angular distributions show the presence of p waves at quite low energy. Production on the neutron is found to be stronger than on the proton but not by as much as for the eta-meson.

Confirmation of the Planet Hypothesis for the Long-period Radial Velocity Variations of Beta Geminorum

We present precise stellar radial velocity measurements for the K giant star Beta Gem spanning over 25 years. These data show that the long period low amplitude radial velocity variations found by Hatzes & Cochran (1993) are long-lived and coherent. An examination of the Ca II K emission, spectral line shapes from high resolution data (R = 210,000), and Hipparcos photometry show no significant variations of these quantities with the RV period. These data confirm the planetary companion hypothesis suggested by Hatzes & Cochran (1993). An orbital solution assuming a stellar mass of 1.7 M_sun yields a period, P = 589.6 days, a minimum mass of 2.3 M_Jupiter, and a semi-major axis, and a = 1.6 AU. The orbit is nearly circular (e = 0.02). Beta Gem is the seventh intermediate mass star shown to host a sub-stellar companion and suggests that planet-formation around stars much more massive than the sun may common.

The Near-Threshold Production of Phi Mesons in pp Collisions

The pp->pp phi reaction has been studied at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-Juelich, using the internal beam and ANKE facility. Total cross sections have been determined at three excess energies epsilon near the production threshold. The differential cross section closest to threshold at epsilon=18.5 MeV exhibits a clear S-wave dominance as well as a noticeable effect due to the proton-proton final state interaction. Taken together with data for pp omega-production, a significant enhancement of the phi/omega ratio of a factor 8 is found compared to predictions based on the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule.

Determination of Deuteron Beam Polarizations at COSY

The vector and tensor polarizations of a deuteron beam have been measured using elastic deuteron-carbon scattering at 75.6 MeV and deuteron-proton scattering at 270 MeV. After acceleration to 1170 MeV inside the COSY ring, the polarizations of the deuterons were checked by studying a variety of nuclear reactions using a cluster target at the ANKE magnet spectrometer placed at an internal target position of the storage ring. All these measurements were consistent with the absence of depolarization during acceleration and provide a number of secondary standards that can be used in subsequent experiments at the facility.

Vector and tensor analysing powers in deuteron-proton breakup reactions at intermediate energies

Vector and tensor analysing powers of the d(pol)p->(pp)n (charge-exchange) and d(pol)p->(pn)p (non-charge-exchange) breakup reactions have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY ring at a deuteron beam energy of 1170 MeV for small momentum transfers to the low excitation energy (pp) or (pn) systems. A quantitative understanding of the values of A_xx and A_yy for the charge-exchange reaction is provided by impulse approximation calculations. The data suggest that spin-flip isospin-flip transitions, which dominate the charge-exchange breakup of the deuteron, are also important in the non-charge-exchange reaction.

Production of the 1S0 diproton in the pp -> pp pi0 reaction at 0.8 GeV

The pp -> pp pi0 differential cross section has been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich for pion cms angles between 0 and 15.4 degrees at a proton beam energy of 0.8 GeV. The selection of diproton pairs with an excitation energy E_{pp} < 3 MeV ensures that the final pp system is dominantly in the spin-singlet 1S0 state. The kinematics are therefore very similar to those of pp -> d pi+ but with different spin and isospin transitions. The results will thus provide a crucial extra test of pion production models in nucleon-nucleon collisions. The cross sections, which are over two orders of magnitude smaller than those of pp -> d pi+, show a forward dip, even stronger than that seen at lower energies. This behaviour is well reproduced in a theoretical model that includes P-wave Delta-N states.

Planets of young stars: the TLS radial velocity survey

We report on the search for planets orbiting 46 nearby young stars performed at the State Observatory of Turingia (TLS) by means of a radial velocity survey. The aim of this program is to test the theories of formation/evolution of planetary systems. For 19(8) stars we can exclude planets with Msini > 1 MJ (5 MJ) and P < 10 days; we find 1 short period binary and 5 stars with long period RV-trend. One good young exo-planet candidate is presented.

Nano-Thermodynamics: On the minimal length scale for the existence of temperature

We consider a quantum system consisting of a regular chain of elementary subsystems with nearest neighbor interactions and assume that the total system is in a canonical state with temperature $T$. We analyze under what condition the state factors into a product of canonical density matrices with respect to groups of $n$ subsystems each, and when these groups have the same temperature $T$. While in classical mechanics the validity of this procedure only depends on the size of the groups $n$, in quantum mechanics the minimum group size $n_{\text{min}}$ also depends on the temperature $T $! As examples, we apply our analysis to a harmonic chain and an Ising spin chain. We discuss various features that show up due to the characteristics of the models considered. For the harmonic chain, which successfully describes thermal properties of insulating solids, our approach gives a first quantitative estimate of the minimal length scale on which temperature can exist: This length scale is found to be constant for temperatures above the Debye temperature and proportional to $T^{-3}$ below.

a0+(980)-resonance production in the reaction pp -> dpi+eta close to the K(bar(K)) threshold

The reaction pp -> dpi+eta has been measured at a beam energy of T=2.65 GeV (p=3.46 GeV/c) using the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich. The missing mass distribution of the detected dpi+ pairs exhibits a peak around the eta mass on top of a strong background of multi-pion pp -> dpi+(n(pi)) events. The differential cross section d^4(sigma)/d(Omega_d)d(Omega_pi+)d(p_d)d(p_pi+) for the reaction pp -> dpi+eta has been determined model independently for two regions of phase space. Employing a dynamical model for the a0+ production allows one then to deduce a total cross section of sigma(pp -> da0+ -> dpi+eta)=(1.1 +/- 0.3_(stat) +/- 0.7_(syst)) microbarn for the production of pi+eta via the scalar a0+(980) resonance and sigma(pp -> dpi+eta) = (3.5 +/- 0.3_(stat) +/- 1.0_(syst)) microbarn for the non-resonant production. Using the same model as for the interpretation of recent results from ANKE for the reaction pp -> dK+(bar(K0)), the ratio of the total cross sections is sigma(pp -> d(K+(bar(K0)))_(L=0))/sigma(pp -> da0+ -> dpi+eta) = 0.029 +/- 0.008_(stat) +/- 0.009_(syst), which is in agreement with branching ratios in the literature.

Local Versus Global Thermal States: Correlations and the Existence of Local Temperatures

Measurement of the Analyzing Power in $\vec{p}d \to (pp)n$ \\with a Fast Forward $^1S_0$--Diproton

A measurement of the analyzing power $A_y$ of the $\vec{p}d \to (pp) + n$ reaction was carried out at beam energies of 0.5 and 0.8 GeV by detection of a fast forward proton pair of small excitation energy $E_{pp} < 3$ MeV. The kinematically complete experiment made use of the ANKE spectrometer at the internal beam of COSY and a deuterium cluster--jet target. For the first time the $S$--wave dominance in the fast diproton is experimentally demonstrated in this reaction. While at $T_p=0.8$ GeV the measured analyzing power $A_y$ vanishes, it reaches almost unity at $T_p=0.5$ GeV for neutrons scattered at $θ_n^{c.m.}=167^\circ$. The results are compared with a model taking into account one--nucleon exchange, single scattering and $Δ$ (1232) excitation in the intermediate state. The model describes fairly well the unpolarized cross section obtained earlier by us and the analyzing power at 0.8 GeV, it fails to reproduce the angular dependence of $A_y$ at 0.5 GeV.

Fundamentals of Nano-Thermodynamics

Recent progress in the synthesis and processing of nano-structured materials and systems calls for an improved understanding of thermal properties on small length scales. In this context, the question whether thermodynamics and, in particular, the concept of temperature can apply on the nanoscale is of central interest. Here we consider a quantum system consisting of a regular chain of elementary subsystems with nearest neighbour interactions and assume that the total system is in a canonical state with temperature $T$. We analyse, under what condition the state factors into a product of canonical density matrices with respect to groups of $n$ subsystems each, and when these groups have the same temperature $T$. In quantum systems the minimal group size $n_{\textrm{min}}$ depends on the temperature $T$, contrary to the classical case. As examples, we apply our analysis to a harmonic chain and different types of Ising spin chains. For the harmonic chain, which successfully describes thermal properties of insulating solids, our approach gives a first quantitative estimate of the minimal length scale on which temperature can exist: This length scale is found to be constant for temperatures above the Debye temperature and proportional to $T^{-3}$ below. We finally apply the harmonic chain model to various materials of relevance for technical applications and discuss the results. These show that, indeed, high temperatures can exist quite locally, while low temperatures exist on larger scales only. This has striking consequences: In quasi 1-dimensional systems, like Carbon-Nanotubes, room temperatures (300 Kelvin) exist on length scales of 1 $μ$m, while very low temperatures (10 Kelvin) can only exist on scales larger than 1 mm.

Near-threshold production of omega mesons in the pn -> d omega reaction

The first measurement of the p n -> d omega total cross section has been achieved at mean excess energies of Q = 28 and 57 MeV by using a deuterium cluster-jet target. The momentum of the fast deuteron was measured in the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich and that of the slow "spectator" proton p(sp) from the p d -> p(sp) d omega reaction in a silicon telescope placed close to the target. The cross sections lie above those measured for p p -> p p omega but seem to be below theoretical predictions.

Inclusive K^+ meson production in proton-nucleus interactions

The production of K^+ mesons in pA (A = D, C, Cu, Ag, Au) collisions has been investigated at the COoler SYnchrotron COSY-Jülich for beam energies T_p = 1.0 - 2.3 GeV. Double differential inclusive pC cross sections at forward angles theta < 12 degrees as well as the target-mass dependence of the K^+ momentum spectra have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer. Far below the free NN threshold at T_{NN}=1.58 GeV the spectra reveal a high degree of collectivity in the target nucleus. From the target-mass dependence of the cross sections at higher energies, the repulsive in-medium potential of K^+ mesons can be deduced. Using pN cross-section parameterisations from literature and our measured pD data we derive a cross-section ratio of sigma(pn -> K^+ X) / sigma(pp -> K^+ X) ~ (3-4).

Gaussian quantum fluctuations in interacting many particle systems

We consider a many particle quantum system, in which each particle interacts only with its nearest neighbours. Provided that the energy per particle has an upper bound, we show, that the energy distribution of almost every product state becomes a Gaussian normal distribution in the limit of infinite number of particles. We indicate some possible applications.

Scaling behavior of interactions in a modular quantum system and the existence of local temperature

We consider a quantum system of fixed size consisting of a regular chain of $n$-level subsystems, where $n$ is finite. Forming groups of $N$ subsystems each, we show that the strength of interaction between the groups scales with $N^{- 1/2}$. As a consequence, if the total system is in a thermal state with inverse temperature $β$, a sufficient condition for subgroups of size $N$ to be approximately in a thermal state with the same temperature is $\sqrt{N} \gg β\bar{δE}$, where $\bar{δE}$ is the width of the occupied level spectrum of the total system. These scaling properties indicate on what scale local temperatures may be meaningfully defined as intensive variables. This question is particularly relevant for non-equilibrium scenarios such as heat conduction etc.

Proton--induced deuteron breakup at GeV energies with forward emission of a fast proton pair

A study of the deuteron breakup reaction $pd \to (pp)n$ with forward emission of a fast proton pair with small excitation energy $E_{pp}<$ 3 MeV has been performed at the ANKE spectrometer at COSY--Jülich. An exclusive measurement was carried out at six proton--beam energies $T_p=$~0.6,~0.7,~0.8,~0.95,~1.35, and 1.9 GeV by reconstructing the momenta of the two protons. The differential cross section of the breakup reaction, averaged up to $8^{\circ}$ over the cm polar angle of the total momentum of the $pp$ pairs, has been obtained. Since the kinematics of this process is quite similar to that of backward elastic $pd \to dp$ scattering, the results are compared to calculations based on a theoretical model previously applied to the $pd \to dp$ process.
