Ultrafast dynamics of the low frequency shear mode in $\mathrm{1T'-MoTe_2}$

We report on the dynamics of coherent phonons in semimetal 1T'-MoTe2 using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. On an ultrafast sub-picosecond time scale at room temperature, a low frequency and long-lifetime shear phonon mode was observed at 0.39 THz, which was previously reported in the form of a characteristic phonon only in the low temperature Td-MoTe2 phase. Unlike the other optical phonon modes, the shear phonon mode was found to strongly couple with photoexcited carriers. Moreover, the amplitude of the shear mode surprisingly decreased with increasing excitation density, a phenomenon which can be attributed to be a consequence of the lattice temperature rising after excitation. These results provide useful physical information on ultrafast lattice symmetry switching between the normal semimetal 1T' and the lattice inversion symmetry breaking Type-II Weyl semimetal Td phases.

Enhancement of Coherent Phonon Amplitude in Phase-change Materials by Near-infrared Laser Irradiation

We have examined the effect of pump-probe photon energy on the amplitude of coherent optical phonons in a prototypical phase change material using a femtosecond time-resolved transmission technique. The photon energy was varied between 0.8 and 1.0 eV (corresponding to the wavelength of 1550 and 1200 nm), a range over which there is significant optical contrast between the crystalline and amorphous phases of Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ (GST225). It was found that in crystalline GST225 the coherent phonon amplitude monotonically increases as the photon energy increases, indicating that the phonon amplitude is enhanced by interband optical absorption, which is associated with the imaginary part of the dielectric function. In amorphous GST225, in contrast, the coherent phonon amplitude does not depend on the photon energy, remaining almost constant over the tuning range. A possible contribution from the polarizability associated with resonant bonding nature of GST225 is discussed.

Experimental confirmation of spin gap in antiferromagnetic alternating spin-3/2 chain substances RCrGeO5 (R = Y or 154Sm) by inelastic neutron scattering experiments

A spin-singlet ground state with a spin gap has been discovered in antiferromagnetic spin chain substances when the spin value is 1/2, 1 or 2. To find spin gap (singlet-triplet) excitations in spin-3/2 chain substances, we performed inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization measurements on {\it R}CrGeO$_5$ ({\it R} = Y or Sm) powders. As expected, we observed spin gap excitations and the dispersion relation of the lowest magnetic excitations. We proved that the spin system of Cr$^{3+}$ was an antiferromagnetic alternating spin-3/2 chain.

Muon spin spectroscopy in multiferroic (Cu,Zn)$_{3}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{9}$

We present the muon spin relaxation/rotation spectra in the multiferroic compound (Cu,Zn)$_{3}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{9}$. The parent material Cu$_{3}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{9}$ has a multiferroic phase below $T_{\rm N}$ = 8.0 K, where the canted antiferromagnetism and the ferroelectricity coexist. The asymmetry time spectra taken at RIKEN-RAL pulsed muon facility show a drastic change at $T_{\rm N}$. At low temperatures the weakly beating oscillation caused by the static internal magnetic fields in the antiferromagnetic phase was observed in Cu$_{3}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{9}$ and the lightly ($0.5\%$) Zn-doped sample. From the fitting of the oscillating term, we obtain the order parameter in these samples: ferromagnetic moment in two sublattices of antiferromagnet. In the heavily ($5.0\%$) Zn-doped sample, the muon-spin oscillation is rapidly damped. The frequency-domain spectrum of this sample suggests a formation of magnetic superstructure.

Magnetic and Dielectric Properties in Multiferroic Cu3Mo2O9 under High Magnetic Fields

The magnetic and dielectric properties under high magnetic fields are studied in the single crystal of Cu3Mo2O9. This multiferroic compound has distorted tetrahedral spin chains. The effects of the quasi-one dimensionality and the geometrical spin frustration are expected to appear simultaneously. We measure the magnetoelectric current and the differential magnetization under the pulsed magnetic field up to 74 T. We also measure the electric polarization versus the electric field curve/loop under the static field up to 23 T. Dielectric properties change at the magnetic fields where the magnetization jumps are observed in the magnetization curve. Moreover, the magnetization plateaus are found at high magnetic fields.

Magnetic and electric properties in the distorted tetrahedral spin chain system Cu3Mo2O9

We study the multiferroic properties in the distorted tetrahedral quasi-one dimensional spin system Cu$_3$Mo$_2$O$_9$, in which the effects of the low dimensionality and the magnetic frustration are expected to appear simultaneously. We clarify that the antiferromagnetic order is formed together with ferroelectric properties at $T_{\rm N}=7.9$ K under zero magnetic field and obtain the magnetic-field-temperature phase diagram by measuring dielectric constant and spontaneous electric polarization. It is found that the antiferromagnetic phase possesses a spontaneous electric polarization parallel to the c axis when the magnetic field $H$ is applied parallel to the a axis. On the other hand, there are three different ferroelectric phases in the antiferromagnetic phase for $H$ parallel to the c axis.

Rhythmic Motion of a Droplet under a DC Electric Field

The effect of a stationary electric field on a water droplet with a diameter of several tens micrometers in oil was examined. Such a droplet exhibits repetitive translational motion between the electrodes in a spontaneous manner. The state diagram of this oscillatory motion was deduced; at 0-20 V the droplet is fixed at the surface of the electrode, at 20-70 V the droplet exhibits small-amplitude oscillatory motion between the electrodes, and at 70-100 V the droplet shows large-amplitude periodic motion between the electrodes. The observed rhythmic motion is explained in a semi-quantitative manner by using differential equations, which includes the effect of charging the droplet under an electric field. We also found that twin droplets exhibit synchronized rhythmic motion between the electrodes.

Structural Transition of Actin Filament in a Cell-Sized Water Droplet with a Phospholipid Membrane

Actin filament, F-actin, is a semiflexible polymer with a negative charge, and is one of the main constituents on cell membranes. To clarify the effect of cross-talk between a phospholipid membrane and actin filaments in cells, we conducted microscopic observations on the structural changes in actin filaments in a cell-sized (several tens of micrometers in diameter) water droplet coated with a phospholipid membrane such as phosphatidylserine (PS; negatively-charged head group) or phosphatidylethanolamine (PE; neutral head group) as a simple model of a living cell membrane. With PS, actin filaments are distributed uniformly in the water phase without adsorption onto the membrane surface between 2 and 6 mM Mg2+, while between 6 and 12 mM Mg2+, actin filaments are adsorbed onto the inner membrane surface. With PE, actin filaments are uniformly adsorbed onto the inner membrane surface between 2 and 12 mM Mg2+. With both PS and PE membranes, at Mg2+ concentrations higher than 12 mM, thick bundles are formed in the bulk water droplet accompanied by the dissolution of actin filaments from the membrane surface. The attraction between actin filaments and membrane is attributable to an increase in the translational entropy of counterions accompanied by the adsorption of actin filaments onto the membrane surface. These results suggest that a microscopic water droplet coated with phospholipid can serve as an easy-to-handle model of cell membranes.

Spin-phonon coupled modes in the incommensurate phases of doped CuGeO$_{3}$

The doping effect of the folded phonon mode at 98 cm$^{-1}$ was investigated on the Si-doped CuGeO$_3$ by magneto-optical measurements in far-infrared (FIR) region under high magnetic field. The folded phonon mode at 98 cm$^{-1}$ appears not only in the dimerized (D) phase but also in the dimerized-anitiferromagnetic (DAF) phase on the doped CuGeO$_3$. The splitting was observed in the incommensurate (IC) phase and the antiferromagnetically ordered incommensurate (IAF) phase above $H_C$. The split-off branches exhibit different field dependence from that of the pure CuGeO$_3$ in the vicinity of $H_C$, and the discrepancy in the IAF phase is larger than that in the IC phase. It is caused by the interaction between the solitons and the impurities.

Far-Infrared Spectroscopy in Spin-Peierls Compound CuGeO_3 under High Magnetic Fields

Polarized far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopic measurements and FIR magneto-optical studies were performed on the inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO_3. An absorption line, which was found at 98 cm$^{-1}$ in the dimerized phase (D phase), was assigned to a folded phonon mode of B$_{3u}$ symmetry. The splitting of the folded mode into two components in the incommensurate phase (IC phase) has been observed for the first time. A new broad absorption centered at 63 cm$^{-1}$ was observed only in the ${\bf E}\parallel b$ axis polarization, which was assigned to a magnetic excitation from singlet ground state to a continuum state.

Spin-Peierls and Antiferromagnetic Phases in Cu{1-x}Zn{x}GeO{3}: A Neutron Scattering Study

Comprehensive neutron scattering studies were carried out on a series of high-quality single crystals of Cu_{1-x}Zn_xGeO_3. The Zn concentration, x, was determined for each sample using Electron Probe Micro-Analysis. The measured Zn concentrations were found to be 40-80% lower than the nominal values. Nevertheless the measured concentrations cover a wide range which enables a systematic study of the effects due to Zn-doping. We have confirmed the coexistence of spin-Peierls (SP) and antiferromagnetic (AF) orderings at low temperatures and the measured phase diagram is presented. Most surprisingly, long-range AF ordering occurs even in the lowest available Zn concentration, x=0.42%, which places important constraints on theoretical models of the AF-SP coexistence. Magnetic excitations are also examined in detail. The AF excitations are sharp at low energies and show no considerable broadening as x increases indicating that the AF ordering remains long ranged for x up to 4.7%. On the other hand, the SP phase exhibits increasing disorder as x increases, as shown from the broadening of the SP excitations as well as the dimer reflection peaks.

New phase diagram of Zn-doped CuGeO3

A series of high-quality single crystals of Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$GeO$_3$ have been examined by neutron scattering techniques. An antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering is confirmed for samples with $x\geq 0.02$, in complete agreement with previous reports. We show that the spin-Peierls (SP) phase transition persists to 6\% Zn, whereas previous magnetic susceptibility measurements reported a deterioration of the SP transition above 2\% Zn. We present some details of the successive transitions upon lowering temperature into the spin-Peierls phase which is followed by a transition into an antiferromagnetically ordered phase. Below the Néel temperature we observe the coexistence of the SP lattice dimerization and AF states.

Temperature Dependence of the Spin-Peierls Energy Gap and Anomalous Line Shapes in CuGeO$_3$

Neutron scattering measurements on a large single crystal of CuGeO$_3$ have been used to determine the temperature-dependence of the spin-Peierls energy gap. While the power law behavior of the intensity of structural superlattice peaks is well fit by $I({\rm T})\propto ({\rm T}_c - {\rm T})^{2β}$ with an exponent of $β=0.33$, the exponent for the temperature dependence of the energy gap is significantly smaller than expected for conventional spin-Peierls materials. Usual scaling relations relate the energy gap to the superlattice reflection intensity as $Δ({\rm T}) \propto I^a$ with $a=1/3$; the present results suggest an exponent of $a\approx 1/6$ for CuGeO$_3$. Additional scattering cross-section is observed in constant-$q$ and constant-$E$ scans creating a long `tail' extending to higher energies relating to a proposed scattering continuum.
