Self-trapping threshold in disordered nonlinear photonic lattices

We investigate numerically and experimentally the influence of coupling disorder on the self-trapping dynamics in nonlinear one-dimensional optical waveguide arrays. The existence of a lower and upper bound of the effective average propagation constant allows for a generalized definition of the threshold power for the onset of soliton localization. When compared to perfectly ordered systems, this threshold is found to decrease in the presence of coupling disorder.

Wave localization at the boundary of disordered photonic lattices

We report on the experimental observation of reduced light energy transport and disorder-induced localization close to a boundary of a truncated one-dimensional (1D) disordered photonic lattice. Our observations uncover that near the boundary a higher level of disorder is required to obtain similar localization than in the bulk.

Two-dimensional solitons at interfaces between binary superlattices and homogeneous lattices

We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional surface solitons residing at the interface between a homogeneous square lattice and a superlattice that consists of alternating "deep" and "shallow" waveguides. By exciting single waveguides in the first row of the superlattice, we show that solitons centered on deep sites require much lower powers than their respective counterparts centered on shallow sites. Despite the fact that the average refractive index of the superlattice waveguides is equal to the refractive index of the homogeneous lattice, the interface results in clearly asymmetric output patterns.

Observation of two-dimensional superlattice solitons

We observe experimentally two-dimensional solitons in superlattices comprising alternating deep and shallow waveguides fabricated via the femtosecond laser direct writing technique. We find that the symmetry of linear diffraction patterns as well as soliton shapes and threshold powers largely differ for excitations centered on deep and shallow sites. Thus, bulk and surface solitons centered on deep waveguides require much lower powers than their counterparts on shallow sites.

Nonlinearity-induced broadening of resonances in dynamically modulated couplers

We report the observation of nonlinearity-induced broadening of resonances in dynamically modulated directional couplers. When the refractive index of the guiding channels in the coupler is harmonically modulated along the propagation direction and out-of-phase in two channels, coupling can be completely inhibited at resonant modulation frequencies. We observe that nonlinearity broadens such resonances and that localization can be achieved even in detuned systems at power levels well below those required in unmodulated couplers.

Observation of two-dimensional coherent surface vector lattice solitons

We report the first experimental observation of vector surface solitons, which form at the edge and in the corner of two-dimensional laser-written waveguide arrays. These elliptically polarized vector states are composed of two orthogonally polarized components. They exist only above a power threshold and bifurcate from scalar surface solitons. The components of a vector soliton may have substantially different degrees of localization in certain parameter ranges.

Inhibition of light tunneling in waveguide arrays

We report the observation of almost perfect light tunneling inhibition at the edge and inside laser-written waveguide arrays due to band collapse. When the refractive index of the guiding channels is harmonically modulated along the propagation direction and out-of-phase in adjacent guides, light is trapped in the excited waveguide over a long distance due to resonances. The phenomenon can be used for tuning the localization threshold power.

Observation of two-dimensional defect surface solitons

We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional solitons located in a defect channel at the surface of a hexagonal waveguide array. The threshold power for the excitation of defect surface solitons existing due to total internal reflection grows with decrease of the refractive index in negative defects and vanishes for sufficiently strong positive defects. Negative defects can also support linear surface modes existing due to Bragg-type reflections.

Soliton excitation in waveguide arrays with an effective intermediate dimensionality

We reveal and observe experimentally significant modifications undertaken by discrete solitons in waveguide lattices upon the continuous transformation of the lattice structure from one-dimensional to two-dimensional. Light evolution and soliton excitation in arrays with a gradually increasing number of rows are investigated, yielding solitons with an effective reduced dimensionality residing at the edge and in the bulk of the lattice.

Angular surface solitons in sectorial hexagonal arrays

We report on the experimental observation of corner surface solitons localized at the edges joining planar interfaces of hexagonal waveguide array with uniform nonlinear medium. The face angle between these interfaces has a strong impact on the threshold of soliton excitation as well as on the light energy drift and diffraction spreading.

Observation of surface solitons in chirped waveguide arrays

We report the observation of surface solitons in chirped semi-infinite waveguide arrays whose waveguides exhibit exponentially decreasing refractive indices. We show that the power threshold for surface wave formation decreases with an increase of the array chirp and that for sufficiently large chirp values linear surface modes are supported.

Surface solitons at interfaces of arrays with spatially-modulated nonlinearity

We address the properties of two-dimensional surface solitons supported by the interface of a waveguide array whose nonlinearity is periodically modulated. When the nonlinearity strength reaches its minima at the points where the linear refractive index attains its maxima, we found that nonlinear surface waves exist and can be made stable only within a limited band of input energy flows, and for lattice depths exceeding a lower threshold.

Observation of two-dimensional lattice interface solitons

We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional solitons at the interface between square and hexagonal waveguide arrays. In addition to the different symmetry of the lattices, the influence of a varying refractive index modulation depth is investigated. Such variation strongly affects the properties of surface solitons residing at different sides of the interface.

Sharp switching of the magnetization in Fe1/4TaS2

Anisotropic magneto-transport measurements are reported on Fe1/4TaS2 single crystals grown by vapor transport. Both the magnetization and resistivity are extremely anisotropic, with the magnetic moments aligned parallel to the c crystallographic direction. Fe1/4TaS2 orders ferromagnetically below TC = 160 K and displays very sharp hysteresis loops in the ordered state for H||c. The corresponding magnetoresistance is negative, and it qualitatively reproduces the features observed in the M(H) data, by showing a sharp drop around the critical field Hs for the moment reversal. The magnetization switching time shows an unusual increase with increasing temperature. For field applied within the ab plane, the magnetization remains small and linear in field up to 5 T, and the magnetoresistance is positive and quadratic in field, with no visible hysteresis. The squareness of the H||c M(H) loops and the high critical field for the magnetization switch (Hs = 3.7 T at T = 2 K) allow us to classify Fe1/4TaS2 as a strong ferromagnet.

The Structure and Dynamics of Flexible Polyelectrolyte Combs

The structure and dynamics of a range of polystyrene sulphonate comb polyelectrolytes with well defined chain architectures were examined with static light scattering, dynamic light scattering, small angle neutron/X-ray scattering, particle tracking microrheology and diffusing wave spectroscopy. The chains adopted extended cylindrical conformations in dilute solutions. In semi-dilute solutions a universal behaviour was found for the correlation length (X) on the monomer concentration (c), X=(3.0/b)c^-0.47, independent of the comb architecture (b is the monomer size). The high frequency viscoelasticity (104-106Hz) is found to be in agreement with a model for the Rouse dynamics of the chains and is again independent of the architecture of the combs. However the architecture had a significant impact on the low frequency viscosity of the solutions and the particle tracking data was in good agreement with a dynamic scaling theory for the unentangled dynamics of the combs. Analogous results are found with the biological comb polyelectrolyte aggrecan.

Photoemission study of polycrystalline Gd_{1-x}Sr_xTiO_{3+delta}: correlation and surface effects

We report photoemission studies of polycrystalline samples of Sr-doped GdTiO_{3+delta}, which undergoes a Mott-Hubbard-like metal-insulator transition at a Ti-concentration of about 20%. The Ti 3d-derived valence band near the Fermi level displays a two-peak structure consistent with a Hubbard-model-type interpretation as quasiparticle and lower Hubbard band. Contrary to the theoretical expectation the lower Hubbard band does not change its energy with doping. However, the analysis of the core level spectra and elemental mapping with a scanning electron microscope indicate a strongly inhomogeneous doping concentration in the probed surface regions. This questions the intrinsic character of the valence band spectra and demonstrates a general difficulty when using polycrystalline samples for such studies.

Heavy-Fermion Formation at the Metal-to-Insulator Transition in Gd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$

The perovskite-like transition-metal oxide Gd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ is investigated by measurements of resistivity, specific-heat, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Approaching the metal-to-insulator transition from the metallic regime ($x \geq 0.2$), the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ of the specific heat becomes strongly enhanced and the resistivity increases quadratically at low temperatures, which both are fingerprints of strong electronic correlations. The temperature dependence of the dynamic susceptibility, as determined from the Gd$^{3+}$-EPR linewidth, signals the importance of strong spin fluctuations, as observed in heavy-fermion compounds.
