Better Band Gaps with Asymptotically Corrected Local Exchange Potentials

We formulate a spin-polarized van Leeuwen and Baerends (vLB) correction to the local density approximation (LDA) exchange potential [Phys. Rev. A 49, 2421 (1994)] that enforces the ionization potential (IP) theorem following Stein et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 266802 (2010)]. For electronic-structure problems, the vLB-correction replicates the behavior of exact-exchange potentials, with improved scaling and well-behaved asymptotics, but with the computational cost of semi-local functionals. The vLB+IP corrections produces large improvement in the eigenvalues over that from LDA due to correct asympotic behavior and atomic shell structures, as shown on rare-gas, alkaline-earth, zinc-based oxides, alkali-halides, sulphides, and nitrides. In half-Heusler alloys, this asymptotically-corrected LDA reproduces the spin-polarized properties correctly, including magnetism and half-metallicity. We also considered finite-sized systems [e.g., ringed boron-nitirde (B$_{12}$N$_{12}$) and graphene (C$_{24}$)] to emphasize the wide applicability of the method.

Estimation of correlation energy for excited-states of atoms

The correlation energies of various atoms in their excited-states are estimated by modelling the Coulomb hole following the previous work by Chakravorty and Clementi. The parameter in the model is fixed by making the corresponding Coulomb hole to satisfy the exact constraint of charge neutrality.

Testing excited-state energy density functional and potential with the ionization potential theorem

The modified local spin density functional and the related local potential for excited states is tested by employing the ionization potential theorem. The functional is constructed by splitting $k$-space. Since its functional derivative cannot be obtained easily, the corresponding potential is given by analogy to its ground-state counterpart. Further to calculate the highest occupied orbital energy $ε_{max}$ accurately, the potential is corrected for its asymptotic behavior by employing the van Leeuwen and Baerends correction to it. $ε_{max}$ so obtained is then compared with the $Δ$SCF ionization energy calculated using the MLSD functional. It is shown that the two match quite accurately.

Response function analysis of excited-state kinetic energy functional constructed by splitting k-space

Over the past decade, fundamentals of time independent density functional theory for excited state have been established. However, construction of the corresponding energy functionals for excited states remains a challenging problem. We have developed a method for constructing functionals for excited states by splitting k-space according to the occupation of orbitals. In this paper we first show the accuracy of kinetic energy functional thus obtained. We then perform a response function analysis of the kinetic energy functional proposed by us and show why method of splitting the k-space could be the method of choice for construction of energy functionals for excited states.

Is it possible to construct excited-state energy functionals by splitting k-space?

We show that our procedure of constructing excited-state energy functionals by splitting k-space, employed so far to obtain exchange energies of excited-states, is quite general. We do so by applying the same method to construct modified Thomas-Fermi kinetic energy functional and its gradient expansion up to the second order for the excited-states. We show that the resulting kinetic energy functional has the same accuracy for the excited-states as the ground-state functionals do for the ground-states.
