Geometrically Parametrised Reduced Order Models for the Study of Hysteresis of the Coanda Effect in Finite Element-based Incompressible Fluid Dynamics

This article presents a general reduced order model (ROM) framework for addressing fluid dynamics problems involving time-dependent geometric parametrisations. The framework integrates Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Empirical Cubature Method (ECM) hyper-reduction techniques to effectively approximate incompressible computational fluid dynamics simulations. To demonstrate the applicability of this framework, we investigate the behavior of a planar contraction-expansion channel geometry exhibiting bifurcating solutions known as the Coanda effect. By introducing time-dependent deformations to the channel geometry, we observe hysteresis phenomena in the solution. The paper provides a detailed formulation of the framework, including the stabilised finite elements full order model (FOM) and ROM, with a particular focus on the considerations related to geometric parametrisation. Subsequently, we present the results obtained from the simulations, analysing the solution behavior in a phase-space for the fluid velocity at a probe point, considered as the Quantity of Interest (QoI). Through qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the ROMs and hyper-reduced order models (HROMs), we demonstrate their ability to accurately reproduce the complete solution field and the QoI. While HROMs offer significant computational speedup, enabling efficient simulations, they do exhibit some errors, particularly for testing trajectories. However, their value lies in applications where the detection of the Coanda effect holds paramount importance, even if the selected bifurcation branch is incorrect. Alternatively, for more precise results, HROMs with lower speedups can be employed.

Fano Resonances observed in Helium Nanodroplets

Doubly-excited Rydberg states of helium (He) nanodroplets have been studied using synchrotron radiation. We observed Fano resonances related to the atomic N = 2,0 series as a function of droplet size. Although similar qualitatively to their atomic counterparts, the resonance lines are broader and exhibit a shift in energy which increases for the higher excited states. Furthermore, additional resonances are observed which are not seen in atomic systems. We discuss these features in terms of delocalized atomic states perturbed by the surrounding He atoms and compare to singly excited droplets.

A prototype liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber for the study of UV laser multi-photonic ionization

This paper describes the design, realization and operation of a prototype liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) detector dedicated to the development of a novel online monitoring and calibration system exploiting UV laser beams. In particular, the system is intended to measure the lifetime of the primary ionization in LAr, in turn related to the LAr purity level. This technique could be exploited by present and next generation large mass LAr TPCs for which monitoring of the performance and calibration plays an important role. Results from the first measurements are presented together with some considerations and outlook.

Study of ionization signals in a TPC filled with a mixture of liquid Argon and Nitrogen

In this paper we report on the evidence for ionization track signals from cosmic ray muons and Compton electrons in a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) filled with liquid Argon and doped with different fractions of Nitrogen. This study has been conducted in view of the possible use of liquid Argon/Nitrogen TPCs for the detection of gamma rays in the resonant band of the Nitrogen absorbtion spectrum, a promising technology for security and medical applications.

Large underground, liquid based detectors for astro-particle physics in Europe: scientific case and prospects

This document reports on a series of experimental and theoretical studies conducted to assess the astro-particle physics potential of three future large-scale particle detectors proposed in Europe as next generation underground observatories. The proposed apparatus employ three different and, to some extent, complementary detection techniques: GLACIER (liquid Argon TPC), LENA (liquid scintillator) and MEMPHYS (\WC), based on the use of large mass of liquids as active detection media. The results of these studies are presented along with a critical discussion of the performance attainable by the three proposed approaches coupled to existing or planned underground laboratories, in relation to open and outstanding physics issues such as the search for matter instability, the detection of astrophysical- and geo-neutrinos and to the possible use of these detectors in future high-intensity neutrino beams.

A novel automatic film changer for high-speed analysis of nuclear emulsions

This paper describes the recent development of a novel automatic computer-controlled manipulator for emulsion film placement and removal at the microscope object table (also called stage). The manipulator is designed for mass scanning of emulsion films for the OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment and provides emulsion changing time shorter than 30 seconds with an emulsion film positioning accuracy as good as 20 microns RMS.

A Real World Implementation of Answer Extraction

In this paper we describe ExtrAns, an answer extraction system. Answer extraction (AE) aims at retrieving those exact passages of a document that directly answer a given user question. AE is more ambitious than information retrieval and information extraction in that the retrieval results are phrases, not entire documents, and in that the queries may be arbitrarily specific. It is less ambitious than full-fledged question answering in that the answers are not generated from a knowledge base but looked up in the text of documents. The current version of ExtrAns is able to parse unedited Unix "man pages", and derive the logical form of their sentences. User queries are also translated into logical forms. A theorem prover then retrieves the relevant phrases, which are presented through selective highlighting in their context.

Constituent Quarks, Diquarks and the N-Delta Mass Splitting

We analyze hadron as well as quark and diquark correlation functions in Landau gauge in order to extract information on the spin dependence of the quark-quark interaction. We find evidence that the N-Delta mass splitting can be attributed to the spin dependence of the interaction between quarks in a colour anti-triplet state with spin 0 and 1, respectively. The lightest excitations are observed in the S=0 channel. However, no evidence for a deeply bound diquark state is found.

Diquark Masses from Lattice QCD

We present first results for diquark correlation functions calculated in Landau gauge on the lattice. Masses have been extracted from the long distance behaviour of these correlation functions. We find that the ordering of diquark masses with spin 0 and 1 states in colour anti-triplet and sextet channels is in accordance with instanton motivated interaction models. Although we find evidence for an attractive interaction in colour anti-triplet states with a splitting between spin 0 and spin 1 diquarks that can account for the mass splitting between the nucleon and the delta, there is no evidence for a deeply bound diquark state.

Locating TeV Gamma-Ray Sources with Sub-Arcminute Precision: the Pointing Calibration of the HEGRA System of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes

Stereoscopic viewing of TeV gamma-ray air showers with systems of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) allows to reconstruct the origin of individual primary particles with an accuracy of 0.1 degree or better. The shower impact point can be determined within 15 meters. To actually achieve this resolution, the pointing of the telescopes of an IACT system needs to be controlled with high precision. For the HEGRA IACT system, a procedure to calibrate telescope pointing was established, using bright stars distributed over the sky as references. On the basis of these measurements, one determines parameters of a correction function which is valid for the complete hemisphere. After correction a pointing accuracy of 0.01 degree is achieved.

Characteristics of the Multi-Telescope Coincidence Trigger of the HEGRA IACT System

The HEGRA--collaboration is operating a system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to search for sources of TeV-gamma-rays. Air showers are observed in stereoscopic mode with several telescopes simultaneously. To trigger the telescope system a versatile two-level trigger scheme has been implemented, which allows a significant reduction of the energy threshold with respect to single telescopes. The technical implementation of this trigger scheme and the performance of the trigger system are described. Results include the dependence of single- and multi-telescope trigger rates on the trigger thresholds, on the orientation of the telescopes, and on the type of the primary particle.

Calibration of the Sensitivity of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes using a Reference Light Source

The sensitivity of an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescope is calibrated by shining, from a distant pulsed monochromatic light source, a defined photon flux onto the mirror. The light pulse is captured and reconstructed by the telescope in an identical fashion as real Cherenkov light. The intensity of the calibration light pulse is monitored via a calibrated sensor at the telescope; in order to account for the lower sensitivity of this sensor compared to the Cherenkov telescope, an attenuator is inserted in the light source between the measurements with the calibrated sensor, and with the telescope. The resulting telescope sensitivities have errors of 10%, and compare well with other estimates of the sensitivity.
