Experimental evidence for a large critical transverse depinning force in weakly-pinned vortices

We present experimental evidence for the existence of a large critical transverse depinning force. These results are obtained in the weakly-pinned superconducting metal glasses Fe$_{x}$Ni$_{1-x}$Zr$_{2}$ using crossed ac and dc driving currents. We study the depinning force due to the transverse ac drive as a function of a longitudinal dc drive. The ac/dc combination allows us to separate the transverse drive from the longitudinal one. We show that the force required for depinning in the transverse direction is enhanced by a longitudinal drive, which leads to the existence of a large transverse critical force.

Two-Dimensional Electron Gas in InGaAs/InAlAs Quantum Wells

We designed and performed low temperature DC transport characterization studies on two-dimensional electron gases confined in lattice-matched In$_{0.53}$Ga$_{0.47}$As/In$_{0.52}$Al$_{0.48}$As quantum wells grown by molecular beam epitaxy on InP substrates. The nearly constant mobility for samples with the setback distance larger than 50nm and the similarity between the quantum and transport life-time suggest that the main scattering mechanism is due to short range scattering, such as alloy scattering, with a scattering rate of 2.2 ps$^{-1}$. We also obtain the Fermi level at the In$_{0.53}$Ga$_{0.47}$As/In$_{0.52}$Al$_{0.48}$As surface to be 0.36eV above the conduction band, when fitting our experimental densities with a Poisson-Schrödinger model.

Density of states of disordered systems with a finite correlation length

We consider a semiclassical formulation for the density of states (DOS) of disordered systems in any dimension. We show that this formulation becomes very accurate when the correlation length of the disorder potential is large. The disorder potential does not need to be smooth and is not limited to the perturbative regime, where the disorder is small. The DOS is expressed in terms of a convolution of the disorder distribution function and the non-disordered DOS. We apply this formalism to evaluate the broadening of Landau levels and to calculate the specific heat in disordered systems.

Transverse Vortex Dynamics in Superconductors

We experimentally characterize the transverse vortex motion and observed some striking features. We found large structures and peaks in the Hall resistance, which can be attributed to the long-range inhomogeneous vortex flow present in some phases of vortex dynamics. We further demonstrate the existence of a moving vortex phase between the pinned phase (peak effect) and the field induced normal state. The measurements were performed on NiZr2 based superconducting glasses.

The microwave induced resistance response of a high mobility 2DEG from the quasi-classical limit to the quantum Hall regime

Microwave induced resistance oscillations (MIROs) were studied experimentally over a very wide range of frequencies ranging from ~20 GHz up to ~4 THz, and from the quasi-classical regime to the quantum Hall effect regime. At low frequencies regular MIROs were observed, with a periodicity determined by the ratio of the microwave to cyclotron frequencies. For frequencies below 150 GHz the magnetic field dependence of MIROs waveform is well described by a simplified version of an existing theoretical model, where the damping is controlled by the width of the Landau levels. In the THz frequency range MIROs vanish and only pronounced resistance changes are observed at the cyclotron resonance. The evolution of MIROs with frequency are presented and discussed.

Decoherence in a N-qubit solid-state quantum computer

We investigate the decoherence process for a quantum register composed of N qubits coupled to an environment. We consider an environment composed of one common phonon bath and several electronic baths. This environment is relevant to the implementation of a charge based solid-state quantum computer. We explicitly compute the time evolution of all off-diagonal terms of the register's reduced density matrix. We find that in realistic configurations, "superdecoherence" and "decoherence free subspaces" do not exist for an N-qubit system. This means that all off-diagonal terms decay like exp(-q(t)N), where q(t) is of the same order as the decay function of a single qubit.

Microwave induced resistance oscillations on a high-mobility 2DEG: absorption/reflection and temperature damping experiments

In this work we address experimentally a number of unresolved issues related to microwave induced resistance oscillations (MIRO) and the zero-resistance states observed recently on very high-mobility 2D electron gases in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. In particular, we examine electrodynamic effects via reflection/absorption experiments and study the exact waveform of MIRO and their damping due to temperature. It is shown that electrodynamic effects due to metallic-like reflection and plasmons are important producing a wide cyclotron resonance line and a number of oscillations which do not coincide with the MIRO. To describe the MIRO waveform a simple model was employed involving radiation-induced scattering with displacement. A very good correlation was found between the temperature dependencies of the quantum lifetime from MIRO and the transport scattering time from the electron mobility. The results are compared with measurements of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations down to 30 mK on the same sample.

Microwave absorption/reflection and magneto-transport experiments on high-mobility electron gas

We have performed simultaneous measurements of microwave absorption/reflection and magneto-transport characteristics of a high mobility two-dimensional electrons in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure in regime of Microwave-Induced Resistance Oscillations (MIROs). It is shown that the electrodynamic aspect of the problem is important in these experiments. In the absorption experiments a broad cyclotron resonance line was observed due to a large reflection from the highly conductive electron gas. There were no additional features observed related to absorption at harmonics of the cyclotron resonance. In near-field reflection experiments a very different oscillation pattern was revealed when compared to MIROs. The oscillation pattern observed in the reflection experiments is probably due to plasma effects occurring in a finite-size sample. The whole microscopic picture of MIROs is more complicated than simply a resonant absorption at harmonics of the cyclotron resonance. Nevertheless, the experimental observations are in good agreement with the model by Ryzhii et al. involving the photo-assisted scattering in the presence of a crossed magnetic field and dc bias. The observed damping factor of MIROs may be attributed to a change in the electron mobility as a function of temperature.

Experiments on the Fermi to Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid transition in quasi-1D systems

We present experimental results on the tunneling into the edge of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) obtained with GaAs/AlGaAs cleaved edge overgrown structures. The electronic properties of the edge of these systems can be described by a one-dimensional chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid when the filling factor of the 2DEG is very small. Here we focus on the region where the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid breaks down to form a standard Fermi liquid close to $ν=1$ and show that we recover a universal curve, which describes all existing data.

Non-interacting electrons and the metal-insulator transition in 2D with correlated impurities

While standard scaling arguments show that a system of non-interacting electrons in two dimensions and in the presence of uncorrelated disorder is insulating, in this work we discuss the case where inter-impurity correlations are included. We find that for point-like impurities and an infinite inter-impurity correlation length a mobility edge exists in 2D even if the individual impurity potentials are random. In the uncorrelated system we recover the scaling results, while in the intermediate regime for length scales comparable to the correlation length, the system behaves like a metal but with increasing fluctuations, before strong localization eventually takes over for length scales much larger than the correlation length. In the intermediate regime, the relevant length scale is not given by the elastic scattering length but by the inter-impurity correlation length, with important consequences for high mobility systems.

Experimental phase diagram of moving vortices

In the mixed state of type II superconductors, vortices penetrate the sample and form a correlated system due to the screening of supercurrents around them. Interestingly, we can study this correlated system as a function of density and driving force. The density, for instance, is controlled by the magnetic field, B, whereas a current density j acts as a driving force F=jxB on all vortices. The free motion of vortices is inhibited by the presence of an underlying potential, which tends to pin the vortices. Hence, to minimize the pinning strength we studied a superconducting glass in which the depinning current is 10 to 1000 times smaller than in previous studies, which enables us to map out the complete phase diagram in this new regime. The diagram is obtained as a function of B, driving current and temperature and led a remarkable set of new results, which includes a huge peak effect, an additional reentrant depinning phase and a driving force induced pinning phase.

Fermi liquid to Luttinger liquid transition at the edge of a two-dimensional electron gas

We present experimental results on the tunneling into the edge of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) obtained with a GaAs/AlGaAs cleaved edge overgrown structure in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. While the 2DEG exhibits typical fractional quantum Hall features of a very high mobility sample, we observe the onset of a non-linear current-voltage characteristic in the vicinity of nu=1. For filling factor nu<1 the system is consistent with a non-Fermi liquid behavior, such as a Luttinger liquid, whereas for nu>1 we observe an Ohmic tunneling resistance between the edge and a three dimensional contact, typical for a Fermi liquid. Hence, at the edge, there is a transition from a Luttinger liquid to a Fermi liquid. Finally, we show that the Luttinger liquid exponent at a given filling factor is not universal but depends on sample parameters.

Phase diagram of the integer quantum Hall effect in p-type Germanium

We experimentally study the phase diagram of the integer quantized Hall effect, as a function of density and magnetic field. We used a two dimensional hole system confined in a Ge/SiGe quantum well, where all energy levels are resolved, because the Zeeman splitting is comparable to the cyclotron energy. At low fields and close to the quantum Hall liquid-to-insulator transition, we observe the floating up of the lowest energy level, but NO FLOATING of any higher levels, rather a merging of these levels into the insulating state. For a given filling factor, only direct transitions between the insulating phase and higher quantum Hall liquids are observed as a function of density. Finally, we observe a peak in the critical resistivity around filling factor one.

Semicircle: An exact relation in the Integer and Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We present experimental results on the quantized Hall insulator in two dimensions. This insulator, with vanishing conductivities, is characterized by the quantization (within experimental accuracy) of the Hall resistance in units of the quantum unit of resistance, h/e^2. The measurements were performed in a two dimensional hole system, confined in a Ge/SiGe quantum well, when the magnetic field is increased above the nu=1 quantum Hall state. This quantization leads to a nearly perfect semi-circle relation for the diagonal and Hall conductivities. Similar results are obtained with a higher mobility n-type modulation doped GaAs/AlGaAs sample, when the magnetic field is increased above the nu=1/3 fractional quantum Hall state.

The Quantized Hall Insulator: A New Insulator in Two-Dimensions

Quite generally, an insulator is theoretically defined by a vanishing conductivity tensor at the absolute zero of temperature. In classical insulators, such as band insulators, vanishing conductivities lead to diverging resistivities. In other insulators, in particular when a high magnetic field (B) is added, it is possible that while the magneto-resistance diverges, the Hall resistance remains finite, which is known as a Hall insulator. In this letter we demonstrate experimentally the existence of another, more exotic, insulator. This insulator, which terminates the quantum Hall effect series in a two-dimensional electron system, is characterized by a Hall resistance which is approximately quantized in the quantum unit of resistance h/e^2. This insulator is termed a quantized Hall insulator. In addition we show that for the same sample, the insulating state preceding the QHE series, at low-B, is of the HI kind.

Delocalization in Continuous Disordered Systems

Continuous One-dimensional models supporting extended states are studied. These delocalized statesoccur at well defined values of the energy and are consequences of simple statistical correlation rules. We explicitly study alloys of delta-barrier potentials as well as alloys and liquids of quantum well as.The divergence of the localization length is studied and a critical exponent 2/3 is found for the delta-barrier case, whereas for the quantum wells we find an exponent of 2 or 2/3 depending on the well's parameters. These results support the idea that correlations between random scattering sequences break Anderson localization. We further calculate the conductance of disordered superlattices. At the peak transmission the relative fluctuations of the transmission coefficient are vanishing.

Symmetry in the insulator - quantum Hall - insulator transitions observed in a Ge/SiGe quantum well

We examine the magnetic field driven insulator-quantum Hall-insulator transitions of the two dimensional hole gas in a Ge/SiGe quantum well. We observe direct transitions between low and high magnetic field insulators and the $ν=1$ quantum Hall state. With increasing magnetic field, the transitions from insulating to quantum Hall and quantum Hall to insulating are very similar with respect to their transport properties. We address the temperature dependence around the transitions and show that the characteristic energy scale for the high field transition is larger.
