Strongly pinned skyrmionic bubbles and higher-order nonlinear Hall resistances at the interface of Pt/FeSi bilayer

Engineering of magnetic heterostructures for spintronic applications has entered a new phase, driven by the recent discoveries of topological materials and exfoliated van der Waals materials. Their low-dimensional properties can be dramatically modulated in designer heterostructures via proximity effects from adjacent materials, thus enabling the realization of diverse quantum states and functionalities. Here we investigate spin-orbit coupling (SOC) proximity effects of Pt on the recently discovered quasi-two-dimensional ferromagnetic state at FeSi surface. Skyrmionic bubbles (SkBs) are formed as a result of the enhanced interfacial Dzyloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The strong pinning effects on the SkBs are evidenced from the significant dispersion in size and shape of the SkBs and are further identified as a greatly enhanced threshold current density required for depinning of the SkBs. The robust integrity of the SkB assembly leads to the emergence of higher-order nonlinear Hall effects in the high current density regime, which originate from nontrivial Hall effects due to the noncollinearity of the spin texture, as well as from the current-induced magnetization dynamics via the augmented spin-orbit torque.

Spontaneous topological Hall effect induced by non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order in intercalated van der Waals materials

In ferromagnets, electric current generally induces transverse Hall voltage in proportion to magnetization (anomalous Hall effect), and it is frequently used for electrical readout of the up and down spin states. While these properties are usually not expected in antiferromagnets, recent theoretical studies predicted that non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order with finite scalar spin chirality (i.e. solid angle spanned by neighboring spins) can often induce large spontaneous Hall effect even without net magnetization or external magnetic field. This phenomenon, i.e. spontaneous topological Hall effect, can potentially be used for the efficient electrical readout of the antiferromagnetic states, but its experimental verification has long been elusive due to the lack of appropriate materials hosting such exotic magnetism. Here, we report the discovery of all-in-all-out type non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order in triangular lattice compounds CoTa3S6 and CoNb3S6, by performing the detailed magnetic structure analysis based on polarized neutron scattering experiments as well as systematic first-principles calculations. These compounds are reported to host unconventionally large spontaneous Hall effect despite their vanishingly small net magnetization, and our analysis revealed that it can be well explained in terms of topological Hall effect, which originates from the fictitious magnetic field associated with scalar spin chirality in non-coplanar antiferromagnetic orders. The present results indicate that the scalar spin chirality mechanism can offer a promising route to realize giant spontaneous Hall response even in compensated antiferromagnets, and highlight intercalated van der Waals magnets as an unique quasi-two-dimensional material platform to enable various nontrivial manner of electrical reading and possible writing of non-coplanar antiferromagnetic domains.

Tuning the Parity Mixing of Singlet-Septet Pairing in a Half-Heusler Superconductor

In superconductors, electrons with spin ${s=1/2}$ form Cooper pairs whose spin structure is usually singlet (${S=0}$) or triplet (${S=1}$). When the electronic structure near the Fermi level is characterized by fermions with angular momentum ${j=3/2}$ due to strong spin-orbit interactions, novel pairing states such as even-parity quintet (${J=2}$) and odd-parity septet (${J=3}$) states become allowed. Prime candidates for such exotic states are half-Heusler superconductors, which exhibit unconventional superconducting properties, but their pairing nature remains unsettled. Here we show that the superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric half-Heusler LuPdBi can be consistently described by the admixture of isotropic even-parity singlet and anisotropic odd-parity septet pairing, whose ratio can be tuned by electron irradiation. From magnetotransport and penetration depth measurements, we find that carrier concentrations and impurity scattering both increase with irradiation, resulting in a nonmonotonic change of the superconducting gap structure. Our findings shed new light on our fundamental understanding of unconventional superconducting states in topological materials.

Field-induced multiple metal-insulator crossovers of correlated Dirac electrons of perovskite CaIrO$_3$

The interplay between electron correlation and topology of relativistic electrons may lead to a new stage of the research on quantum materials and emergent functions. The emergence of various collective electronic orderings/liquids, which are tunable by external stimuli, is a remarkable feature of correlated electron systems, but has rarely been realized in the topological semimetals with high-mobility relativistic electrons. Here, we report that the correlated Dirac electrons with the Mott criticality in perovskite CaIrO$_3$ show unconventional field-induced successive metal-insulator-metal crossovers in the quantum limit accompanying a giant magnetoresistance (MR) with MR ratio of 3,500 % (18 T and 1.4 K). The analysis shows that the insulating state originates from the collective electronic ordering such as charge/spin density wave promoted by electron correlation, whereas it turns into the quasi-one-dimensional metal at higher fields due to the field-induced reduction of chemical potential, highlighting the highly field-sensitive character of correlated Dirac electrons.

Radial spin texture in elemental tellurium with chiral crystal structure

The chiral crystal is characterized by a lack of mirror symmetry and an inversion center, resulting in the inequivalent right- and left-handed structures. In the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, the spin and momentum of electrons are locked in the reciprocal space with the help of the spin-orbit interaction. To reveal the spin textures of chiral crystals, here we investigate the spin and electronic structure in p-type semiconductor elemental tellurium with a chiral crystal structure by using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our data demonstrate that the highest valence band crossing the Fermi level has a spin component parallel to the electron momentum around the BZ corners. Significantly, we have also confirmed that the spin polarization is reversed in the crystal with the opposite chirality. The results indicate that the spin textures of the right- and left-handed chiral crystals are hedgehog-like, leading to unconventional magnetoelectric effects and nonreciprocal phenomena.

Experimental determination of the topological phase diagram in Cerium monopnictides

We use bulk-sensitive soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and investigate bulk electronic structures of Ce monopnictides (CeX; X=P, As, Sb and Bi). By exploiting a paradigmatic study of the band structures as a function of their spin-orbit coupling (SOC), we draw the topological phase diagram of CeX and unambiguously reveal the topological phase transition from a trivial to a nontrivial regime in going from CeP to CeBi induced by the band inversion. The underlying mechanism of the topological phase transition is elucidated in terms of SOC in concert with their semimetallic band structures. Our comprehensive observations provide a new insight into the band topology hidden in the bulk of solid states.

$^{13}$C NMR Study on Zero-Gap State in the Organic Conductor $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$I$_{3}$ under Pressure

We present the results of our $^{13}$C NMR study of the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_{3}$ under pressure, which is suggested to be a zero-gap conductor by transport measurements. We found that NMR spin shift is proportional to $T$ and that spin-lattice relaxation rate follows the power law $T^α$ ($α=3 \sim 4$), where $T$ is the temperature. This behavior is consistent with the cone-like band dispersion and provides microscopic evidence for the realization of the zero-gap state in the present material under pressure.

Monte-Carlo Simulator and Ancillary Response Generator of Suzaku XRT/XIS System for Spatially Extended Source Analysis

We have developed a framework for the Monte-Carlo simulation of the X-Ray Telescopes (XRT) and the X-ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS) onboard Suzaku, mainly for the scientific analysis of spatially and spectroscopically complex celestial sources. A photon-by-photon instrumental simulator is built on the ANL platform, which has been successfully used in ASCA data analysis. The simulator has a modular structure, in which the XRT simulation is based on a ray-tracing library, while the XIS simulation utilizes a spectral "Redistribution Matrix File" (RMF), generated separately by other tools. Instrumental characteristics and calibration results, e.g., XRT geometry, reflectivity, mutual alignments, thermal shield transmission, build-up of the contamination on the XIS optical blocking filters (OBF), are incorporated as completely as possible. Most of this information is available in the form of the FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) files in the standard calibration database (CALDB). This simulator can also be utilized to generate an "Ancillary Response File" (ARF), which describes the XRT response and the amount of OBF contamination. The ARF is dependent on the spatial distribution of the celestial target and the photon accumulation region on the detector, as well as observing conditions such as the observation date and satellite attitude. We describe principles of the simulator and the ARF generator, and demonstrate their performance in comparison with in-flight data.

Decomposition of meron configuration of SU(2) gauge field

For the meron configuration of the SU(2) gauge field in the four dimensional Minkowskii spacetime, the decomposition into an isovector field $\bn$, isoscalar fields $ρ$ and $σ$, and a U(1) gauge field $C_μ$ is attained by solving the consistency condition for $\bn$. The resulting $\bn$ turns out to possess two singular points, behave like a monopole-antimonopole pair and reduce to the conventional hedgehog in a special case. The $C_μ$ field also possesses singular points, while $ρ$ and $σ$ are regular everywhere.

A Class of Exact Solutions of the Faddeev Model

A class of exact solutions of the Faddeev model, that is, the modified SO(3) nonlinear sigma model with the Skyrme term, is obtained in the four dimensional Minkowskian spacetime. The solutions are interpreted as the isothermal coordinates of a Riemannian surface. One special solution of the static vortex type is investigated numerically. It is also shown that the Faddeev model is equivalent to the mesonic sector of the SU(2) Skyrme model where the baryon number current vanishes.

Elliptic solutions of the Skyrme model

A class of exact solutions of the Skyrme model are obtained. They are described by the Weierstrass $\wp$-function or the Jacobi elliptic function. They are not solitonic but of wave character. They supply us with examples of the superposition of three plane waves in the Skyrme model.

Class of exact solutions of the Skyrme and the Faddeev model

Class of exact solutions of the Skyrme and the Faddeev model are presented. In contrast to previously found solutions, they are produced by the interplay of the two terms in the Lagrangians of the models. They are not solitonic but of wave character. With an appropriate choice of field variables, the field equations of the two models are written in exactly the same form. The solutions supply us with examples of the superposition of two plane waves in nonlinear field theories.

ASCA Observations of Temperature Structure and Metal Distribution in the Perseus Cluster of Galaxies

Large-scale distributions of hot-gas temperature and Fe abundance in the Perseus cluster have been studied with multi-pointing observations by the GIS instrument on ASCA. Within a radius of 20' from the cluster center, the energy spectra requires two temperature components, in which the cool component indicates kT ~ 2 keV and the hot-component temperature shows a significant decline from about 8 keV to 6 keV toward the center. In the outer region of the cluster, the temperature shows a fluctuation with an amplitude of about 2 keV and suggest that a western region at ~16' from the cluster center is relatively hotter. As for the Fe abundance, a significant decline with radius is detected from 0.44 solar at the center to ~0.1 solar at a 50' offset region. If observed Fe-K line intensity within 4' from the center is suppressed by a factor of 2 due to the resonance scattering effect, the corrected Fe mass density follows the galaxy distribution. Finally, our results do not support the large-scale velocity gradients previously reported from the same GIS data.

ASCA Detection of Pulsed X-ray Emission from PSR J0631+1036

ASCA's long look at the 288 millisecond radio pulsar, PSR J0631+1036, reveals coherent X-ray pulsation from this source for the first time. The source was first detected in the serendipitous Einstein observation and later identified as a radio pulsar. Possible pulsation in the gamma-ray band has been detected from the CGRO EGRET data (Zepka, et al. 1996). The X-ray spectrum in the ASCA band is characterized by a hard power-law type emission with a photon index of about 2.3, when fitted with a single power-law function modified with absorption. An additional blackbody component of about 0.14 keV increases the quality of the spectral fit. The observed X-ray flux is 2.1e-13 ergs/s/cm2 in the 1-10 keV band. We find that many characteristics of PSR J0631+1036 are similar to those of middle-aged gamma-ray pulsars such as PSR B1055-52, PSR B0633+17 (Geminga), and PSR B0656+14.

Non-Abelian Stokes Theorem for Wilson Loops Associated with General Gauge Groups

A formula constituting the non-Abelian Stokes theorem for general semi-simple compact gauge groups is presented. The formula involves a path integral over a group space and is applicable to Wilson loop variables irrespective of the topology of loops. Some simple expressions analogous to the 't Hooft tensor of a magnetic monopole are given for the 2-form of interest. A special property in the case of the fundamental representation of the group SU(N) is pointed out.

X-Ray/Gamma-Ray Observations of the PSR B1259-63/SS 2883 system near Apastron

We report the results from X-ray and hard X-ray observations of the PSR B1259-63/SS 2883 system with the ASCA and CGRO satellites, performed between 1995 February and 1996 January when the pulsar was near apastron. The system was clearly detected in each of the two ASCA observations with luminosity in the 1-10 keV band of Lx = (9 +- 3) x10^32 (d/2 kpc)^2 erg/s, while CGRO/OSSE did not detect significant hard X-rays from the system. X-ray spectra obtained with ASCA are well-fit by a single power-law spectrum with a photon index of 1.6 +- 0.3. No pulsations were detected in either the ASCA or the OSSE data. We combine all existing X-ray and hard X-ray observations and present the orbital modulation in the luminosity and photon index for the entire orbit. The results are in agreement with predictions based on a synchrotron emission model from relativistic particles in a shocked pulsar wind interacting with the gaseous outflow from the Be star.

Consistency Conditions of the Faddeev-Niemi-Periwal Ansatz for the SU(N) Gauge Field

The consistency condition of the Faddeev-Niemi ansatz for the gauge-fixed massless SU(2) gauge field is discussed. The generality of the ansatz is demonstrated by obtaining a sufficient condition for the existence of the three-component field introduced by Faddeev and Niemi. It is also shown that the consistency conditions determine this three-component field as a functional of two arbitrary functions. The consistency conditions corresponding to the Periwal ansatz for the SU(N) gauge field with N larger than 2 are also obtained. It is shown that the gauge field obeying the Periwal ansatz must satisfy extra (N-1)(N-2)/2 conditions.
