Properties of β-stable neutron star matter with hyperons

We present results from many-body calculations for β-stable neutron star matter with nucleonic and hyperonic degrees of freedom, employing the most recent parametrizations of the baryon-baryon interaction of the Nijmegen group. It is found that the only strange baryons emerging in β-stable matter up to total baryonic densities of 1.2 fm^{-3} are Σ^- and Λ. The corresponding equations of state are thence used to compute properties of neutron stars such as the masses, moments of inertia and radii. We also study the possibility of forming a hyperon superfluid and discuss its implications for neutron stars.

Entropy in hot ^{161,162}Dy and ^{171,172}Yb nuclei

The density of accessible levels at low spin in the (^3He,αγ) reaction has been extracted for the ^{161,162}Dy and ^{171,172}Yb nuclei. The entropy of the even-odd and even-even nuclei has been deduced as a function of excitation energy, and found to reach a maximum of 15 k_B before neutron evaporation. The entropy of one quasi-particle outside an even-even core is found to be 1.70(15) k_B. This quasi-particle picture of hot nuclei is well accounted for within a simple pairing model. The onset of two, four and six quasi-particle excitations in the ^{162}Dy and ^{172}Yb nuclei is discussed and compared to theory. The number of quasi-particles excited per excitation energy is a measure for the ratio of the level energy spacing and the pairing strength.

Pairing correlations in nuclear systems, from infinite matter to finite nuclei

Finite nuclei such as those found in the chain of even tin isotopes from ^{102}Sn to ^{130}Sn, exhibit a near constancy of the 2^+_1-0^+_1 excitation energy, a constancy which can be related to strong pairing correlations and the near degeneracy in energy of the relevant single particle orbits. Large shell-model calculations for these isotopes reveal that the major contribution to pairing correlations in the tin isotopes stems from the ^1S_0 partial wave in the nucleon-nucleon interaction. Omitting this partial wave and the ^3P_2 wave in the construction of an effective interaction, results in a spectrum which has essentially no correspondence with experiment. These partial wave are also of importance for infinite neutron matter and nuclear matter and give the largest contribution to the pairing interaction and energy gap in neutron star matter.

Strange nuclear matter within Brueckner-Hartree-Fock Theory

We have developed a formalism for microscopic Brueckner-type calculations of dense nuclear matter that includes all types of baryon-baryon interactions and allows to treat any asymmetry on the fractions of the different species (n, p, $Λ$, $Σ^0$, $Σ^+$, $Σ^-$, $Ξ^-$ and $Ξ^0$). We present results for the different single-particle potentials focussing on situations that can be relevant in future microscopic studies of beta-stable neutron star matter with strangeness. We find the both the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions play a non-negligible role in determining the chemical potentials of the different species.

Phase Transitions in Neutron Stars and Maximum Masses

Using the most recent realistic effective interactions for nuclear matter with a smooth extrapolation to high densities including causality, we constrain the equation of state and calculate maximum masses of rotating neutron stars. First and second order phase transitions to, e.g., quark matter at high densities are included. If neutron star masses of $\sim 2.3M_\odot$ from quasi-periodic oscillations in low mass X-ray binaries are confirmed, a soft equation of state as well as strong phase transitions can be excluded in neutron star cores.

Shell model studies of the proton drip line nucleus $^{106}$Sb

We present results of shell model calculations for the proton drip line nucleus $^{106}$Sb. The shell model calculations were performed based on an effective interaction for the $2s1d0g_{7/2}0h11_{11/2}$ shells employing modern models for the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The results are compared with the recently proposed experimental yrast states. A good agreement with experiment is found lending support to the experimental spin assignements.

Observation of Thermodynamical Properties in the $^{162}$Dy, $^{166}$Er and $^{172}$Yb Nuclei

The density of accessible levels in the ($^3$He,$αγ$) reaction has been extracted for the $^{162}$Dy, $^{166}$Er and $^{172}$Yb nuclei. The nuclear temperature is measured as a function of excitation energy in the region of 0 -- 6 MeV. The temperature curves reveal structures indicating new degrees of freedom. The heat capacity of the nuclear system is discussed within the framework of a canonical ensemble.

Phases of dense matter in neutron stars

Recent equations of state for dense nuclear matter are discussed with possible phase transitions arising in neutron stars such as pion, kaon and hyperon kondensation, superfluidity and quark matter. Specifically, we treat the nuclear to quark matter phase transition, the possible mixed phase and its structure. A number of numerical calculations of rotating neutron stars with and without phase transitions are given and compared to observed masses, radii, temperatures and glitches.

Shell-Model Effective Operators for Muon Capture in ^{20}Ne

It has been proposed that the discrepancy between the partially-conserved axial-current prediction and the nuclear shell-model calculations of the ratio $C_P/C_A$ in the muon-capture reactions can be solved in the case of ^{28}Si by introducing effective transition operators. Recently there has been experimental interest in measuring the needed angular correlations also in ^{20}Ne. Inspired by this, we have performed a shell-model analysis employing effective transition operators in the shell-model formalism for the transition $^{20}Ne(0^+_{g.s.})+μ^- \to ^{20}F(1^+; 1.057 MeV) + ν_μ$. Comparison of the calculated capture rates with existing data supports the use of effective transition operators. Based on our calculations, as soon as the experimental anisotropy data becomes available, the limits for the ratio $C_P/ C_A$ can be extracted.

Effective interactions for the nuclear shell model

Various perturbative and non-perturbative many-body techniques are discussed in this work. Especially, we will focus on the summation of so-called Parquet diagrams with emphasis on applications to finite nuclei. Here, the subset of two-body Parquet equations will be discussed. A practical implementation of the corresponding equations for studies of effective interactions for finite nuclei is outlined.

Shell Model Monte Carlo studies of neutron-rich nuclei in the 1s-0d-1p-0f shells

We demonstrate the feasibility of realistic Shell-Model Monte Carlo (SMMC) calculations spanning multiple major shells, using a realistic interaction whose bad saturation and shell properties have been corrected by a newly developed general prescription. Particular attention is paid to the approximate restoration of translational invariance. The model space consists of the full sd-pf shells. We include in the study some well-known T=0 nuclei and several unstable neutron-rich ones around N=20,28. The results indicate that SMMC can reproduce binding energies, B(E2) transitions, and other observables with an interaction that is practically parameter free. Some interesting insight is gained on the nature of deep correlations. The validity of previous studies is confirmed.

Binding energy of $Λ$ hypernuclei from realistic YN interactions

s- and p-wave $Λ$ single-particle enrgies are obtained for a variety of $Λ$ hypernuclei from the relevant self-energy constructed within the framework of a perturbative many-body approach. Results are presented for present realistic hyperon-nucleon interactions such as Jülich B and Nijmegen SC models. Effects of the non-locality and energy-dependence of the self-energy on the bound states are investigated.

Realistic Effective Interactions and Large-Scale Nuclear Structure Calculation

We describe the properties of complex nuclei, such as the Sn isotopes with mass numbers A = 100 - 132, in terms of the free nucleon--nucleon interaction as obtained from meson--exchange theory. This amounts to first calculating an effective interaction in which the free interaction is modified by the presence of the appropriate nuclear medium. The short--range correlations are included within the framework of Brueckner theory yielding the nuclear reaction matrix and the long--range correlations by using the reaction matrix in many--body perturbation theory to obtain an effective interaction. The resulting effective interaction is then employed in calculating the nuclear properties. Particular emphasis is placed on the ability of our calculation to describe systematic trends of the properties of these nuclei. Both successful achievements and problematic features are pointed out.

3P_2-3F_2 pairing in neutron matter with modern nucleon-nucleon potentials

We present results for the $^3P_2 - ^3F_2$ pairing gap in neutron matter with several realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials, in particular with recent, phase-shift equivalent potentials. We find that their predictions for the gap cannot be trusted at densities above $ρ\approx 1.7ρ_0$, where $ρ_0$ is the saturation density for symmetric nuclear matter. In order to make predictions above that density, potential models which fit the nucleon-nucleon phase shifts up to about 1 GeV are required.

Towards the solution of the $C_{P}/C_{A}$ anomaly in shell-model calculations of muon capture

Recently many authors have performed shell-model calculations of nuclear matrix elements determining the rates of the ordinary muon capture in light nuclei. These calculations have employed well-tested effective interactions in large scale shell-model studies. For one of the nuclei of interest, namely $^{28}$Si, there exists recent experimental data which can be used to deduce the value of the ratio $C_{P}/C_{A}$ by using the calculated matrix elements. Surprisingly enough, all the abovementioned shell-model results suggest a very small value ($\simeq 0$) for $C_{P}/C_{A}$, quite far from the PCAC prediction and recent data on muon capture in hydrogen. We show that this rather disturbing anomaly is solved by employing effective transition operators. This finding is also very important in studies of the scalar coupling of the weak charged current of leptons and hadrons.

Hyperon properties in finite nuclei using realistic $YN$ interactions

Single-particle energies of the $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperons are obtained from the relevant self-energies. The latter are constructed within the framework of a perturbative many-body approach employing present realistic hyperon-nucleon interactions such as the models of the Juelich and Nijmegen groups. The effects of the non-locality and energy dependence of the self-energy on the bound states are investi- gated. It is also shown that, although the single-particle hyperon energies are well reproduced by local Woods-Saxon hyperon-nucleus potentials, the wave functions from the non-local self-energy are far more extended. Implications of this behavior on the mesonic weak decay of $Λ$ hypernuclei are discused.

Phase Transitions in Rotating Neutron Stars

As rotating neutron stars slow down, the pressure and the density in the core region increase due to the decreasing centrifugal forces and phase transitions may occur in the center. We extract the analytic behavior near the critical angular velocity $Ω_0$, where the phase transitions occur in the center of a neutron star, and calculate the moment of inertia, angular velocity, rate of slow down, braking index, etc. For a first order phase transition these quantities have a characteristic behavior, e.g., the braking index diverges as $\sim(Ω_0-Ω)^{-1/2}$. Observational consequences for first, second and other phase transitions are discussed.

Phaseshift equivalent NN potentials and the deuteron

Different modern phase shift equivalent NN potentials are tested by evaluating the partial wave decomposition of the kinetic and potential energy of the deuteron. Significant differences are found, which are traced back to the matrix elements of the potentials at medium and large momenta. The influence of the localisation of the one-pion-exchange contribution to these potentials is analyzed in detail.
