Experimental evidence for 56Ni-core breaking from the low-spin structure of the N=Z nucleus 58Cu

Low-spin states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 58Cu were investigated with the 58Ni(p,n gamma)58Cu fusion evaporation reaction at the FN-tandem accelerator in Cologne. Seventeen low spin states below 3.6 MeV and 17 new transitions were observed. Ten multipole mixing ratios and 17 gamma-branching ratios were determined for the first time. New detailed spectroscopic information on the 2+,2 state, the Isobaric Analogue State (IAS) of the 2+,1,T=1 state of 58Ni, makes 58Cu the heaviest odd-odd N=Z nucleus with known B(E2;2+,T=1 --> 0+,T=1) value. The 4^+ state at 2.751 MeV, observed here for the first time, is identified as the IAS of the 4+,1,T=1 state in 58Ni. The new data are compared to full pf-shell model calculations with the novel GXPF1 residual interaction and to calculations within a pf5/2 configurational space with a residual surface delta interaction. The role of the 56Ni core excitations for the low-spin structure in 58Cu is discussed.

First Fringe Detection with VERA's Dual-Beam System and its Phase Referencing Capability

We present the results of first dual-beam observations with VERA (VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry). The first dual-beam observations of a pair of H2O maser sources W49N and OH43.8-0.1 have been carried out on 2002 May 29 and July 23, and fringes of H2O maser lines at 22 GHz have been successfully detected. While the residual fringe phases of both sources show rapid variations over 360 degree due to the atmospheric fluctuation, the differential phase between the two sources remains constant for 1 hour with r.m.s. of 8 degree, demonstrating that the atmospheric phase fluctuation is removed effectively by the dual-beam phase referencing. The analysis based on Allan standard deviation reveals that the differential phase is mostly dominated by white phase noise, and the coherence function calculated from the differential phase shows that after phase referencing the fringe visibility can be integrated for arbitrarily long time. These results demonstrate VERA's high capability of phase referencing, indicating that VERA is a promising tool for phase referencing VLBI astrometry at 10 microarcsec level accuracy.

Microlensing optical depth towards the Galactic bulge from MOA observations during 2000 with Difference Image Analysis

We analyze the data of the gravitational microlensing survey carried out by by the MOA group during 2000 towards the Galactic Bulge (GB). Our observations are designed to detect efficiently high magnification events with faint source stars and short timescale events, by increasing the the sampling rate up to 6 times per night and using Difference Image Analysis (DIA). We detect 28 microlensing candidates in 12 GB fields corresponding to 16 deg^2. We use Monte Carlo simulations to estimate our microlensing event detection efficiency, where we construct the I-band extinction map of our GB fields in order to find dereddened magnitudes. We find a systematic bias and large uncertainty in the measured value of the timescale $t_{\rm Eout}$ in our simulations. They are associated with blending and unresolved sources, and are allowed for in our measurements. We compute an optical depth tau = 2.59_{-0.64}^{+0.84} \times 10^{-6} towards the GB for events with timescales 0.3 10). These events are useful for studies of extra-solar planets.

Effective interaction for pf-shell nuclei

An effective interaction is derived for use in the full pf basis. Starting from a realistic G-matrix interaction, 195 two-body matrix elements and 4 single-particle energies are determined by fitting to 699 energy data in the mass range 47 to 66. The derived interaction successfully describes various structures of pf-shell nuclei. As examples, systematics of the energies of the first 2+ states in the Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, and Ni isotope chains and energy levels of 56,57,58Ni are presented. The appearance of a new magic number 34 is seen.

Study of variable stars in the MOA data base: long-period red variables in the Large Magellanic Cloud

One hundred and forty six long-period red variable stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) from the three year MOA project database were analysed. A careful periodic analysis was performed on these stars and a catalogue of their magnitudes, colours, periods and amplitudes is presented. We convert our blue and red magnitudes to $K$ band values using 19 oxygen-rich stars. A group of red short-period stars separated from the Mira sequence has been found on a (log P, K) diagram. They are located at the short period side of the Mira sequence consistent with the work of Wood and Sebo (1996). There are two interpretations for such stars; a difference in pulsation mode or a difference in chemical composition. We investigated the properties of these stars together with their colour, amplitude and periodicity. We conclude that they have small amplitudes and less regular variability. They are likely to be higher mode pulsators. A large scatter has been also found on the long period side of the (log P, K) diagram. This is possibly a systematic spread given that the blue band of our photometric system covers both standard B and V bands and affects carbon-rich stars.

Hubble Constant at Intermediate Redshift using the CO-Line Tully-Fisher Relation

We have determined distances and Hubble ratios for galaxies at intermediate redshifts, cz=about 10,000 to 35,000 km/s, by applying the CO-line Tully-Fisher relation to our 12CO (J=1-0)-line observations using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope, and near-IR (NIR) photometry in the J and H bands using the 1.88-m telescope at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. By averaging the Hubble ratios from J-band result, we obtain a Hubble constant of H_0 = 60 (+/- 10) km/s/Mpc. We argue that the CO line-NIR TFR can be a complimentary method to the other methods for measuring distances of galaxies at intermediate and high redshifts.

Ultra-High-Density Molecular Core and Warped Nuclear Disk in the Deep Potential of Radio-Lobe Galaxy NGC 3079

We have performed high-resolution synthesis observations of the 12CO (J=1-0) line emission from the radio lobe edge-on spiral NGC 3079 using a 7-element mm-wave interferometer at Nobeyama, which consisted of the 45-m telescope and 6-element Array. The molecular nuclear disk (NMD) of 750 pc radius is found to be inclined by 20 degrees from the optical disk, and the NMD has spiral arms. An ultra-high-density molecular core (UHC) was found at the nucleus. The gaseous mass of the UHC within 125 pc radius is as large as about 3 x 10^8 Msun, an order of magnitude more massive than that in the same area of the Galactic Center, and the mean density is as high as approximately 3 x 10^3 H2 cm^-3. A position-velocity diagram along the major axis indicates that the rotation curve starts at a finite velocity exceeding 300 \kms already from the nucleus. The surface mass density in the central region is estimated to be as high as about 10^5 Msun pc^-2, producing a very deep gravitational potential. We argue that the very large differential rotation in such a deep potential will keep the UHC gravitationally stable from current star formation.

CO Observations of Luminous IR Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift

We present new measurement of $^{12}$CO($J=1-0$) emission from 16 luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) at intermediate redshift ($cz \sim 10,000 - 50,000 {\rm km s^{-1}}$). These new data were selected by isolated and normal morphology. The CO observations were performed using the NRO 45-m telescope. Comparison of the CO and dust properties of the new result with those from other CO measurements revealed characteristics of this sample: (1) It is the deepest CO observations of IRAS galaxies at intermediate redshift without strong interaction features. (2) It has typical properties of normal IRAS galaxies in terms of star-formation efficiency, color-color diagrams and galactic nuclear activity. (3) It has smaller gas-to-dust ratio than normal IRAS galaxies. This can be explained by two-component dust model, and our sample consists of most of warm dust.

J-Net Galactic Plane Survey of VLBI Radio Sources for VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA)

In order to search for new VLBI sources in the Galactic plane that can be used as phase reference sources in differential VLBI, we have conducted 22 GHz observations of radio sources in the Galactic plane using the Japanese VLBI Network (J-Net). We have observed 267 VLBI source candidates selected from existing radio surveys and have detected 93 sources at the signal-to-noise ratio larger than 5. While 42 of the 93 detected sources had already been detected with VLBI at relatively lower frequency (typically 2 to 8 GHz), the remaining 51 are found to be new VLBI sources detected for the first time. These VLBI sources are located within $|b|\le 5^\circ$, and have a large number of Galactic maser sources around them. Thus, they are potential candidates for phase reference sources for VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA), which is the first VLBI array dedicated to the phase referencing VLBI astrometry aiming at measuring the parallax and proper motion of maser sources in the whole Galaxy.

Central Kinematics and Rotation Curve of the Sb Galaxy NGC 4527 in CO, Halpha, and [NII] Lines

We have obtained interferometer observations of the central region of the Sb galaxy NGC 4527 in the 12CO (J=1-0) line emission using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. We also obtained optical (Halpha, [NII]) spectroscopy using the Okayama 188-cm reflector along the major axis. The kinematical structure and the distribution of HII regions show symmetry around the nucleus, while the distribution of molecular gas is asymmetric. The molecular-gas mass shares only 10% of the dynamical mass in the central 1 kpc radius region. Using position-velocity diagrams, we have derived a center-to-disk rotation curve. It rises steeply in the central region, attaining a maximum of about 250 km/s at 400 pc radius, and then decreases to a minimum at 2 kpc radius, followed by a disk and outer flat part. The rotation curve may provide us with the most similar case to that of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Central Rotation Curves of Spiral Galaxies

We present high-resolution central-to-outer rotation curves for Sb, SBb, Sc, and SBc galaxies. We discuss their general characteristics, particularly their central behavior, as well as dependencies on morphological types, activity, and peculiarity. The rotation curves generally show a steep nuclear rise, and high-velocity central rotation, followed by a broad maximum in the disk and then by a flat rotation due to the massive halo. Since the central high velocity and steep rise are common to all massive galaxies, it cannot be due to non-circular motions. Disk rotation curves of barred galaxies show larger dispersion than those of normal galaxies which is probably due to non-circular motions. Interacting galaxies show often perturbed outer rotation curves, while their central rotation shows no particular peculiarity. Also, central activities, such as starbursts and AGN, appear to show no particular correlation with the property of rotation curves. This would suggest that the central activities are triggered by a more local effect than the global dynamical property.

Optical and CO Radio Observations of Poor Cluster Zwicky 1615.8+3505

The cluster Zwicky 1615.8+3505 is considered to be a dynamically young poor cluster. To investigate the morphology and star-formation activity of galaxies under the environment of a dynamically young poor cluster, we have performed V, R, and I surface photometry, optical low-resolution spectroscopy, and 12CO (J=1-0) line observations for member galaxies. Our data show that more than 90% of the observed galaxies show regular morphologies and no star-formation activities, indicating that the environment does not affect these galaxy properties. Among sixteen galaxies observed, only NGC 6104 shows a significant star-formation activity, and shows a distorted morphology, indicating a tidal interaction. This galaxy contains double knots, and only one knot possesses Seyfert activity, though the sizes and luminosities are similar to each other; we also discuss this feature.

Distance Measurement of Galaxies to Redshift of 0.1 using the CO-Line Tully-Fisher Relation

We report on the first results of a long-term project to derive distances of galaxies at cosmological distances by applying the CO-line width-luminosity relation. We have obtained deep CO-line observations of galaxies at redshifts up to 29,000 km/s using the Nobeyama 45-m mm-wave Telescope, and some supplementary data were obtained by using the IRAM 30-m telescope. We have detected the CO line emission for several galaxies, and used their CO line widths to estimate the absolute luminosities using the line-width-luminosity relation. In order to obtain photometric data and inclination correction, we also performed optical imaging observations of the CO-detected galaxies using the CFHT 3.6-m telescope at high resolution. The radio and optical data have been combined to derive the distance moduli and distances of the galaxies, and Hubble ratios were estimated for these galaxies. We propose that the CO line width-luminosity relation can be a powerful method to derive distances of galaxies to redfhift of z = 0.1 and to derive the Hubble ratio in a significant volume of the universe. Description of superdeformed nuclei in the interacting boson model

The interacting boson model is extended to describe the spectroscopy of superdeformed bands. Microscopic structure of the model in the second minimum is discussed and superdeformed bosons are introduced as the new building blocks. Solutions of a quadrupole Hamiltonian are implemented through the $1/N$ expansion method. Effects of the quadrupole parameters on dynamic moment of inertia and electric quadrupole transition rates are discussed and the results are used in a description of superdeformed bands in the Hg-Pb and Gd-Dy regions.
