Description of electromagnetic fields in inhomogeneous accelerating sections. IV couplers

A new approach to incorporating coupling elements into a generalized coupled mode theory is presented. The simplest model of coupling of a structured waveguide with an external RF power source and load through loops and transmission lines was used. Even such a simple model significantly complicated the system of coupled equations. It turned into a coupled integro-differential system of the Barbashin type with degenerate kernels. Since the integral kernels are degenerate, this system is reduced to three independent systems of differential equations. Instead of solving a system of coupled integro-differential equations, we need to find solutions to three systems of ordinary differential equations. Two systems describe the distribution of the field excited by one loop and the specified value of the excitation current in it. In the first system the loop is located at the section's input, and in the second, at the section's output. The third system does not depend on the loop parameters at all. It describes the distribution of the field excited by an electron beam in a section without loops. Based on the developed analytical model, the computer code was developed for matching the loop couplers for the uniform accelerating sections of X-band. The calculation results were used to simulate the non-uniform section. Without additional matching, we obtained an input reflection coefficient of 8E-3.

Description of electromagnetic fields in inhomogeneous accelerating sections. III Beam loading

A self-consistent semi-analytical theory of beam loading in inhomogeneous accelerating structures based on the generalized theory of coupled modes is proposed. A single-mode approximation was used when the fields are represented as a sum of two components, one of which is associated with the right travelling eigen wave, and the second with the left. However, this second component is not always a left travelling. When a field is excited by an electron beam it can have complex spatial distribution. The results of calculation of the distribution of electric fields excited by a relativistic electron beam are presented.

Coupled integral equations method with open boundary conditions for calculation the characteristics of structured waveguides

The results of modification of the CASCIE code aimed at implementing open boundary conditions are presented. The accelerator section developed at CERN was chosen as a prototype for the structured waveguide under testing. Results of testing the CASCIE-M code confirms that the implementation of matrix open boundary conditions gives possibility to consider the structure in which waves enter and exit without additional reflections from couplers. It was shown that the dependence of the reflection coefficient on frequency differs from the similar dependence for a waveguide with couplers. It does not have a regular sequence of minimum and maximum values associated with reflections from the couplers and the formation of resonance conditions. This indicates that the reflections are of a different nature and are associated with inhomogeneity. The proposed modification of the coupled integral equation method allows us to investigate the accuracy of the field expansion on which coupled mode theory can be constructed that describes structured waveguides.

Generation of a reflected wave in an inhomogeneous medium

In this work we present the results of calculation of the electric field distribution in the inhomogeneous media based on the generalized WKB method. In this approach the field is represented as the sum of two components, one of which is associated with the right-travelling WKB solution and the other with the left-travelling WKB solution. It has been shown that the second component is not a left-travelling nonuniform wave. Calculation results showed that the phase distribution of this component has an increasing character, similar to the phase distribution of the right-travelling wave component. Obtained results can be useful during the development of dielectric accelerating waveguides. The obtained results may also indicate the location where a semiclassical particle with energy greater than the barrier height can reflect from a smooth potential barrier.

Description of electromagnetic fields in inhomogeneous accelerating sections. II Fields in the regular part

In this work we present the results of calculation of the electric field distribution in the inhomogeneous accelerating section on the base of generalized coupled modes theory. It was shown that the proposed coupled differential equations correctly describe electromagnetic field distribution in the regular part of the section under consideration, which is an analogue of the one being developed at CERN.

Description of electromagnetic fields in inhomogeneous accelerating sections. I Field representation

In this work we present the results of a study of the possibility of using a homogeneous basis and a new generalization of coupled modes theory to describe inhomogeneous accelerating sections. It was shown that the single mode representation describes the electromagnetic fields with small errors in the regular part of the section. In the couplers the accuracy is worse, but it is small enough to be used in calculations. Solving the equations of generalized coupled modes theory requires calculating the derivatives of the fields with respect to various geometrical parameters. Procedures for calculating these derivatives have been developed.

Representation of wave fields in a graded multilayer medium

In this work we present a new approach in representation of wave fields in nonuniform 1-D multilayer medium. This approach is based on the use of a modified homogeneous basis. A new form of coupled equations for describing nonuniform one-directional photonic crystals is proposed. This description can be especially useful to study radiation that originates when fast electrons move in such medium

Representation of fields in inhomogeneous structured waveguides

In this work we present the results of a study of the possibility of using a homogeneous basis and a new generalization of coupled modes theory to describe non-periodic structured waveguides. It was shown that for the studied inhomogeneities the single wave approximation gives good results. Within the framework of single wave approximation, the fields are represented as the sum of two components, one of which is associated with the forward eigen wave, and the second with the backward eigen wave. But this second component is not a backward wave. Because of the coupling, characteristics of this component are determined by the first component, which is significantly larger than the second.

Coupled-mode theory for non-periodic structured waveguides

In this work a new generalization of the theory of coupled modes for non-periodic structured waveguide is presented. Based on a set of eigen waves of a homogeneous periodic waveguide, a new basis of vector functions is introduced that takes into account the non-periodicity of the waveguide. Representing the total field as the sum of these functions with unknown scalar coefficients, a system of coupled equations that determines the dependence of these coefficients on the longitudinal coordinate has been obtained. It was shown that the single-wave equation has an additional phase term. In the frame of proposed approach, the z-dependent series impedance and local wave vector were introduced for structured waveguides.

WKB approach for structured waveguides

The results of the development of an approximate approach, which can be considered as an analogue of the WKB method, are presented. This approach gives possibility to divide the electromagnetic field in structured waveguides into forward and backward components and simplify the analysis of the field characteristics, especially the phase distribution. The accuracy of this method was estimated by comparing the solution of the approximate system of equations with the solution of the general system of equations. For this, a special code was written that combines the proposed approach with the more accurate one developed earlier. The results of this comparison showed that the accuracy of the proposed approximate approach for sections with group velocity gradients, similar to the SLAC section, is about 1%.

Fast code CASCIE (Code for Accelerating Structures -Coupled Integral Equations). Test Results

Results of testing the fast CASCIE (Code for Accelerating Structures - Coupled Integral Equations) code developed as an analytical-numerical tool for studying the properties of inhomogeneous structured waveguides are presented. We have used this code to numerically tune the resonator chain, which is very similar to the classic 3m SLAC accelerating structure. During testing, we discovered a problem that, in our opinion, was overlooked in the development of the accelerating sections, namely the appearance of a constant phase shift when determining the dimensions of the resonator radii from the characteristics of homogeneous structures. This issue is particularly relevant in the development of short accelerating structures.

Coupled Cavity Model: Correctness and Limitations

Results of analysis of correctness and limitations of the classical Coupled Cavity Model are presented in the paper. It is shown that in the case of an infinite chain of resonators, there are spurious solutions of the characteristic equation. These spurious solutions do not violate the correctness of direct numerical calculations, but their existence makes it difficult (or even impossible) to use approximate WKB methods for analyzing chains with slowly varying parameters.

Modification of coupled integral equations method for calculation the accelerating structure characteristics

Modification of coupled integral equations method (CIEM) for calculating the characteristics of the accelerating structures is presented in this paper. In earlier developed CIEM schemes the coupled integral equations are derived for the unknown electrical fields at interfaces that divide the adjacent volumes. In addition to the standard division of the structured waveguide by interfaces between the adjacent cells, we propose to introduce new interfaces in places where electric field has the simplest transverse structure. Moreover, the system of coupled integral equations is formulated for longitudinal electrical fields in contrast to the standard approach where the transverse electrical fields are unknowns. The final matrix equations contain expansion coefficients of the longitudinal electric field at these additional interfaces. This modification makes it possible to deal with a physical quantity that plays an important role in the acceleration of particles (a longitudinal electric field), and to obtain approximate equations for the case of a slow change in the waveguide parameters.

Inhomogeneous Travelling-Wave Accelerating Sections and WKB Approach

The paper presents the results of a study of the possibility of using the WKB approach to describe Inhomogeneous Travelling-Wave Accelerating Sections (ITWAS). This possibility not only simplifies the calculation, but also allows the use of simpler physical models of transient processes. Using the traveling wave concept simplifies the understanding of pulsed-excited ITWAS transients and the development of methods to mitigate their effect on beam parameters.

Nonlocal Equations for the Electromagnetic field in the Coupled Cavity Model

The procedure for obtaining a difference equation, the solution of which is the components of the electric (or magnetic) field at the chosen set of volume points of the resonator chain, was developed. We started with the wave equation with boundary conditions and obtained the difference equation without boundary conditions. Boundary conditions were included into the coefficients of the difference equation for the electric field. As the obtained equation connects the field values in different points (in general case, on an infinite set of points), the proposed procedure represents a nonlocal model for field description. Solutions of the difference equation for the electric field were analyzed. It was shown that they coincide with good accuracy with the ones that were obtained by direct summing of relevant series.

Transformation of the linear difference equation into a system of the first order difference equations

The transformation of the Nth- order linear difference equation into a system of the first order difference equations is presented. The proposed transformation gives possibility to get new forms of the N-dimensional system of the first order equations that can be useful for analysis of the solutions of the Nth- order difference equations. In particular, for the third-order linear difference equation the nonlinear second-order difference equation that plays the same role as the Riccati equation for second-order linear difference equation is obtained. The new form of the N-dimensional system of first order equations can be also used for finding the WKB solutions of the linear difference equation with coefficients that vary sufficiently slowly with index.
