Diffusion-induced dephasing in nanomechanical resonators

We study resonant response of an underdamped nanomechanical resonator with fluctuating frequency. The fluctuations are due to diffusion of molecules or microparticles along the resonator. They lead to broadening and change of shape of the oscillator spectrum. The spectrum is found for the diffusion confined to a small part of the resonator and where it occurs along the whole nanobeam. The analysis is based on extending to the continuous limit, and appropriately modifying, the method of interfering partial spectra. We establish the conditions of applicability of the fluctuation-dissipation relations between the susceptibility and the power spectrum. We also find where the effect of frequency fluctuations can be described by a convolution of the spectra without these fluctuations and with them as the only source of the spectral broadening.

Proposal for manipulating and detecting spin and orbital states of trapped electrons on helium using cavity quantum electrodynamics

We propose to couple an on-chip high finesse superconducting cavity to the lateral-motion and spin state of a single electron trapped on the surface of superfluid helium. We estimate the motional coherence times to exceed 15 microseconds, while energy will be coherently exchanged with the cavity photons in less than 10 nanoseconds for charge states and faster than 1 microsecond for spin states, making the system attractive for quantum information processing and cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments. Strong interaction with cavity photons will provide the means for both nondestructive readout and coupling of distant electrons.

Poisson-noise induced escape from a metastable state

We provide a complete solution of the problems of the probability distribution and the escape rate in Poisson-noise driven systems. It includes both the exponents and the prefactors. The analysis refers to an overdamped particle in a potential well. The results apply for an arbitrary average rate of noise pulses, from slow pulse rates, where the noise acts on the system as strongly non-Gaussian, to high pulse rates, where the noise acts as effectively Gaussian.

Switching barrier scaling near bifurcation points for non-Gaussian noise

We study noise-induced switching of a system close to bifurcation parameter values where the number of stable states changes. For non-Gaussian noise, the switching exponent, which gives the logarithm of the switching rate, displays a non-power-law dependence on the distance to the bifurcation point. This dependence is found for Poisson noise. Even weak additional Gaussian noise dominates switching sufficiently close to the bifurcation point, leading to a crossover in the behavior of the switching exponent.

Spectrum of an oscillator with jumping frequency and the interference of partial susceptibilities

We study an underdamped oscillator with shot-noise frequency fluctuations. The oscillator spectrum is determined by the interference of the susceptibilities for different eigenfrequencies. Depending on the parameters, it has a fine structure or displays a single asymmetric peak. For nano-mechanical resonators with a fluctuating number of attached molecules, the spectrum is found in a simple analytical form. The results bear on various types of systems where the reciprocal correlation time of frequency fluctuations can be comparable to the typical frequency jumps.

Speeding up disease extinction with a limited amount of vaccine

We consider optimal vaccination protocol where the vaccine is in short supply. In this case, disease extinction results from a large and rare fluctuation. We show that the probability of such fluctuation can be exponentially increased by vaccination. For periodic vaccination with fixed average rate, the optimal vaccination protocol is model independent and presents a sequence of short pulses. The effect of vaccination can be resonantly enhanced if the pulse period coincides with the characteristic period of the disease dynamics or its multiples. This resonant effect is illustrated using a simple epidemic model. If the system is periodically modulated, the pulses must be synchronized with the modulation, whereas in the case of a wrong phase the vaccination can lead to a negative result. The analysis is based on the theory of fluctuation-induced population extinction in periodically modulated systems that we develop.

Relaxation of a qubit measured by a driven Duffing oscillator

We investigate the relaxation of a superconducting qubit for the case when its detector, the Josephson bifurcation amplifier, remains latched in one of its two (meta)stable states of forced vibrations. The qubit relaxation rates are different in different states. They can display strong dependence on the qubit frequency and resonant enhancement, which is due to quasienergy resonances. Coupling to the driven oscillator changes the effective temperature of the qubit.

An Ideal Mean-Field Transition in a Modulated Cold Atom System

We show that an atomic system in a periodically modulated optical trap displays an ideal mean-field symmetry-breaking transition. The symmetry is broken with respect to time translation by the modulation period. The transition is due to the interplay of the long-range interatomic interaction and nonequilibrium fluctuations. The observed critical dynamics, including anomalous fluctuations in the symmetry broken phase, are fully described by the proposed microscopic theory.

Resonant Correlation-Induced Optical Bistability in an Electron System on Liquid Helium

We show that electrons on liquid helium display intrinsic bistability of resonant inter-subband absorption. The bistability occurs for comparatively weak microwave power. The underlying giant nonlinearity of the many-electron response results from the interplay of the strong short-range electron correlations, the long relaxation time, and the multi-subband character of the electron energy spectrum.

Extinction rate fragility in population dynamics

Population extinction is a rare event which requires overcoming an effective barrier. We show that the extinction rate can be fragile: a small change in the system parameters leads to an exponentially strong change of the rate, with the barrier height depending on the parameters nonanalytically. General conditions of the fragility are established. The fragility is found in one of the best-known models of epidemiology, the SIS model. The analytical expressions are compared with simulations.

Quantum Measurements of Coupled Two-Level Systems

We propose an approach to measuring nonresonant coupled systems, which gives a parametrically smaller error than the conventional fast projective measurements. The approach takes into account that, due to the coupling, excitations are not entirely localized on individual systems. It combines high spectral selectivity of the detector with temporal resolution and uses the ideas of the quantum diffusion theory. The results bear on quantum computing with perpetually coupled qubits.

Quantum Measurements with Dynamically Bistable System

Periodically modulated nonlinear oscillators often display bistability of forced vibrations. This bistability can be used for new types of quantum measurements. They are based on switching between coexisting vibrational states. Since switching is accompanied by a large change of the amplitude and phase of forced vibrations, the measurements are highly sensitive. Quantum and classical noise plays dual role. It imposes a limitation on sensitivity in the familiar regime of a bifurcation amplifier. On the other hand, it makes it possible to use a bistable modulated oscillator in a new regime of a balanced dynamical bridge. We discuss the switching probabilities and show that they display scaling with control parameters. The critical exponents are found for different types of bifurcations and for different types of noise.

Switching path distribution in multi-dimensional systems

We explore the distribution of paths followed in fluctuation-induced switching between coexisting stable states. We introduce a quantitative characteristic of the path distribution in phase space that does not require a priori knowledge of system dynamics. The theory of the distribution is developed and its direct measurement is performed in a micromechanical oscillator driven into parametric resonance. The experimental and theoretical results on the shape and position of the distribution are in excellent agreement, with no adjustable parameters. In addition, the experiment provides the first demonstration of the lack of time-reversal symmetry in switching of systems far from thermal equilibrium. The results open the possibility of efficient control of the switching probability based on the measured narrow path distribution.

Distribution of Fluctuational Paths in Noise-Driven Systems

Dynamics of a system that performs a large fluctuation to a given state is essentially deterministic: the distribution of fluctuational paths peaks sharply at a certain optimal path along which the system is most likely to move. For the general case of a system driven by colored Gaussian noise, we provide a formulation of the variational problem for optimal paths. We also consider the prehistory problem, which makes it possible to analyze the shape of the distribution of fluctuational paths that arrive at a given state. We obtain, and solve in the limiting case, a set of linear equations for the characteristic width of this distribution.

Paths of fluctuation induced switching

We demonstrate that the paths followed by a system in fluctuation-activated switching form a narrow tube in phase space. A theory of the path distribution is developed and its direct measurement is performed in a micromechanical oscillator. The experimental and theoretical results are in excellent agreement, with no adjustable parameters. We also demonstrate the lack of time-reversal symmetry in switching of systems far from thermal equilibrium.

Hysteresis, transient oscillations, and nonhysteretic switching in resonantly modulated large-spin systems

We study the classical dynamics of resonantly modulated large-spin systems in a strong magnetic field. We show that these systems have special symmetry. It leads to characteristic nonlinear effects. They include abrupt switching between magnetization branches with varying modulating field without hysteresis and a specific pattern of switching in the presence of multistability and hysteresis. Along with steady forced vibrations the transverse spin components can display transient vibrations at a combination of the Larmor frequency and a slower frequency determined by the anisotropy energy. The analysis is based on a microscopic theory that takes into account relaxation mechanisms important for single-molecule magnets and other large-spin systems. We find how the Landau-Lifshitz model should be modified in order to describe the classical spin dynamics. The occurrence of transient oscillations depends on the interrelation between the relaxation parameters.

Exponential peak and scaling of work fluctuations in modulated systems

We extend the stationary-state work fluctuation theorem to periodically modulated nonlinear systems. Such systems often have coexisting stable periodic states. We show that work fluctuations sharply increase near a kinetic phase transition where the state populations are close to each other. The work variance is proportional here to the reciprocal rate of interstate switching. We also show that the variance displays scaling with the distance to a bifurcation point and find the critical exponent for a saddle-node bifurcation.

Switching via quantum activation: A parametrically modulated oscillator

We study switching between period-two states of an underdamped quantum oscillator modulated at nearly twice its natural frequency. For all temperatures and parameter values switching occurs via quantum activation: it is determined by diffusion over oscillator quasienergy, provided the relaxation rate exceeds the rate of interstate tunneling. The diffusion has quantum origin and accompanies relaxation to the stable state. We find the semiclassical distribution over quasienergy. For T=0, where the system has detailed balance, this distribution differs from the distribution for $T\to 0$; the T=0 distribution is also destroyed by small dephasing of the oscillator. The characteristic quantum activation energy of switching displays a typical dependence on temperature and scaling behavior near the bifurcation point where period doubling occurs.
