Power Law in Micro-Canonical Ensemble with Scaling Volume Fluctuations

Volume fluctuations are introduced in a statistical modelling of relativistic particle collisions. The micro-canonical ensemble is used, and the volume fluctuations are assumed to have the specific scaling properties. This leads to the KNO scaling of the particle multiplicity distributions as measured in p+p interactions. A striking prediction of the model is a power law form of the single particle momentum spectrum at high momenta. Moreover, the mean multiplicity of heavy particles also decreases as a function of the particle mass according to a power law. Finally, it is shown that the dependence of the momentum spectrum on the particle mass and momentum reduces to the dependence on the particle energy. These results resemble the properties of particle production in collisions of high energy particles.

Multiplicity Fluctuations in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions: Dependence on Energy and Atomic Number

Event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations in central C+C, S+S, In+In, and Pb+Pb as well as p+p collisions at bombarding energies from 10 to 160 AGeV are studied within the HSD and UrQMD microscopic transport approaches. Our investigation is directly related to the future experimental program of the NA61 Collaboration at the SPS for a search of the QCD critical point. The dependence on energy and atomic mass number of the scaled variances for negative, positive, and all charged hadrons is presented and compared to the results of the model of independent sources. Furthermore, the nucleus-nucleus results from the transport calculations are compared to inelastic proton-proton collisions for reference. We find a dominant role of the participant number fluctuations in nucleus-nucleus reactions at finite impact parameter $b$. In order to reduce the influence of the participant numbers fluctuations on the charged particle multiplicity fluctuations only the most central events have to be selected. Accordingly, the samples of the 1% most central nucleus-nucleus collisions with the largest numbers of the projectile participants are studied. The results are compared with those for collisions at zero impact parameter. A strong influence of the centrality selection criteria on the multiplicity fluctuations is pointed out. Our findings are essential for an optimal choice of colliding nuclei and bombarding energies for the experimental search of the QCD critical point.

Bose-Einstein Condensation in the Relativistic Pion Gas: Thermodynamic Limit and Finite Size Effects

We consider the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a relativistic pion gas. The thermodynamic limit when the system volume $V$ goes to infinity as well as the role of finite size effects are studied. At $V\to \infty$ the scaled variance for particle number fluctuations, $ω=< ΔN^2>/< N>$, converges to finite values in the normal phase above the BEC temperature, $T>T_C$. It diverges as $ω\propto V^{1/3}$ at the BEC line $T=T_C$, and $ω\propto V$ at $T<T_C$ in a phase with the BE condensate. Possible experimental signals of the pion BEC in finite systems created in high energy proton-proton collisions are discussed.

Statistical Ensembles with Fluctuating Extensive Quantities

We suggest an extension of the standard concept of statistical ensembles. Namely, we introduce a class of ensembles with extensive quantities fluctuating according to an externally given distribution. As an example the influence of energy fluctuations on multiplicity fluctuations in limited segments of momentum space for a classical ultra-relativistic gas is considered.

Multiplicity Distributions in Canonical and Microcanonical Statistical Ensembles

The aim of this paper is to introduce a new technique for calculation of observables, in particular multiplicity distributions, in various statistical ensembles at finite volume. The method is based on Fourier analysis of the grand canonical partition function. Taylor expansion of the generating function is used to separate contributions to the partition function in their power in volume. We employ Laplace's asymptotic expansion to show that any equilibrium distribution of multiplicity, charge, energy, etc. tends to a multivariate normal distribution in the thermodynamic limit. Gram-Charlier expansion allows additionally for calculation of finite volume corrections. Analytical formulas are presented for inclusion of resonance decay and finite acceptance effects directly into the system partition function. This paper consolidates and extends previously published results of current investigation into properties of statistical ensembles.

Multiplicity fluctuations in relativistic nuclear collisions

Multiplicity distributions of hadrons produced in central nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied within the hadron-resonance gas model in the large volume limit. In the canonical ensemble conservation of three charges (baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness) is enforced. In addition, in the micro-canonical ensemble energy conservation is included. An analytical method is used to account for resonance decays. Multiplicity distributions and scaled variances for negatively charged hadrons are presented along the chemical freeze-out line of central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions from SIS to LHC energies. Predictions obtained within different statistical ensembles are compared with preliminary NA49 experimental results on central Pb+Pb collisions in the SPS energy range. The measured fluctuations are significantly narrower than a Poisson reference distribution, and clearly favor expectations for the micro-canonical ensemble.

Viscosity in the excluded volume hadron gas model

The shear viscosity $η$ in the van der Waals excluded volume hadron-resonance gas model is considered. For the shear viscosity the result of the non-relativistic gas of hard-core particles is extended to the mixture of particles with different masses, but equal values of hard-core radius r. The relativistic corrections to hadron average momenta in thermal equilibrium are also taken into account. The ratio of the viscosity $η$ to the entropy density s is studied. It monotonously decreases along the chemical freeze-out line in nucleus-nucleus collisions with increasing collision energy. As a function of hard-core radius r, a broad minimum of the ratio $η/s\approx 0.3$ near $r \approx 0.5$ fm is found at high collision energies. For the charge-neutral system at $T=T_c=180$ MeV, a minimum of the ratio $η/s\cong 0.24$ is reached for $r\cong 0.53$ fm. To justify a hydrodynamic approach to nucleus-nucleus collisions within the hadron phase the restriction from below, $r~ \ge ~0.2$ fm, on the hard-core hadron radius should be fulfilled in the excluded volume hadron-resonance gas.

Particle number fluctuations in nuclear collisions within excluded volume hadron gas model

The multiplicity fluctuations are studied in the van der Waals excluded volume hadron-resonance gas model. The calculations are done in the grand canonical ensemble within the Boltzmann statistics approximation. The scaled variances for positive, negative and all charged hadrons are calculated along the chemical freeze-out line of nucleus-nucleus collisions at different collision energies. The multiplicity fluctuations are found to be suppressed in the van der Waals gas. The numerical calculations are presented for two values of hard-core hadron radius, $r=0.3$ fm and 0.5 fm, as well as for the upper limit of the excluded volume suppression effects.

Multiplicity fluctuations in relativistic nuclear collisions: statistical model versus experimental data

The multiplicity distributions of hadrons produced in central nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied within the hadron-resonance gas model in the large volume limit. The microscopic correlator method is used to enforce conservation of three charges - baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness - in the canonical ensemble. In addition, in the micro-canonical ensemble energy conservation is included. An analytical method is used to account for resonance decays. The multiplicity distributions and the scaled variances for negatively, positively, and all charged hadrons are calculated along the chemical freeze-out line of central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions from SIS to LHC energies. Predictions obtained within different statistical ensembles are compared with the preliminary NA49 experimental results on central Pb+Pb collisions in the SPS energy range. The measured fluctuations are significantly narrower than the Poisson ones and clearly favor expectations for the micro-canonical ensemble. Thus this is a first observation of the recently predicted suppression of the multiplicity fluctuations in relativistic gases in the thermodynamical limit due to conservation laws.

Multiplicity Fluctuations in Proton-Proton and Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions

We study the scaled variances of multiplicity fluctuations in nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS and RHIC energies within the HSD transport model. The HSD results are compared with proton-proton data and with predictions of the hadron-resonance gas statistical model. We find that the HSD scaled variances $ω_i$ for negatively, positively, and all charged hadrons in central nucleus-nucleus collisions remain close to the $ω_i$ values in proton-proton collisions and increase with collision energy as the corresponding multiplicities per participating nucleon. The statistical model predicts very different behavior of $ω_i$. However, a comparison with preliminary NA49 data for the most central Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energies does not permit to distinguish the HSD and statistical model results. New measurements of the multiplicity fluctuations in nucleus-nucleus collisions in a wide energy region with large acceptance are needed to allow for a proper determination of the underlying dynamics.

Multiplicity Fluctuations in Au+Au Collisions at RHIC

The preliminary data of the PHENIX collaboration for the scaled variances of charged hadron multiplicity fluctuations in Au+Au at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV are analyzed within the model of independent sources. We use the HSD transport model to calculate the participant number fluctuations and the number of charged hadrons per nucleon participant in different centrality bins. This combined picture leads to a good agreement with the PHENIX data and suggests that the measured multiplicity fluctuations result dominantly from participant number fluctuations. The role of centrality selection and acceptance is discussed separately.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Pions in High Multiplicity Events

We present microcanonical ensemble calculations of particle number fluctuations in the ideal pion gas approaching Bose-Einstein condensation. In the samples of events with a fixed number of all pions, $N_π$, one may observe a prominent signal. When $N_π$ increases the scaled variances for particle number fluctuations of both neutral and charged pions increase dramatically in the vicinity of the Bose-Einstein condensation line. As an example, the estimates are presented for $p+p$ collisions at the beam energy of 70 GeV.

Baryon Number and Electric Charge Fluctuations in Pb+Pb Collisions at SPS energies

Event-by-event fluctuations of the net baryon number and electric charge in nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied in Pb+Pb at SPS energies within the HSD transport model. We reveal an important role of the fluctuations in the number of target nucleon participants. They strongly influence all measured fluctuations even in the samples of events with rather rigid centrality trigger. This fact can be used to check different scenarios of nucleus-nucleus collisions by measuring the multiplicity fluctuations as a function of collision centrality in fixed kinematical regions of the projectile and target hemispheres. The HSD results for the event-by-event fluctuations of electric charge in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20, 30, 40, 80 and 158 A GeV are in a good agreement with the NA49 experimental data and considerably larger than expected in a quark-gluon plasma. This demonstrate that the distortions of the initial fluctuations by the hadronization phase and, in particular, by the final resonance decays dominate the observable fluctuations.

Multiplicity Fluctuations in Hadron-Resonance Gas

The charged hadron multiplicity fluctuations are considered in the canonical ensemble. The microscopic correlator method is extended to include three conserved charges: baryon number, electric charge and strangeness. The analytical formulae are presented that allow to include resonance decay contributions to correlations and fluctuations. We make the predictions for the scaled variances of negative, positive and all charged hadrons in the most central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions for different collision energies from SIS and AGS to SPS and RHIC.

Particle Number Fluctuations in High Energy Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions from Microscopic Transport Approaches

Event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations in nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied within the HSD and UrQMD transport models. The scaled variances of negative, positive, and all charged hadrons in Pb+Pb at 158 AGeV are analyzed in comparison to the data from the NA49 Collaboration. We find a dominant role of the fluctuations in the nucleon participant number for the final hadron multiplicity fluctuations. This fact can be used to check different scenarios of nucleus-nucleus collisions by measuring the final multiplicity fluctuations as a function of collision centrality. The analysis reveals surprising effects in the recent NA49 data which indicate a rather strong mixing of the projectile and target hadron production sources even in peripheral collisions.

Particle Number Fluctuations in Relativistic Bose and Fermi Gases

Particle number fluctuations are studied in relativistic Bose and Fermi gases. The calculations are done within both the grand canonical and canonical ensemble. The fluctuations in the canonical ensemble are found to be different from those in the grand canonical one. Effects of quantum statistics increase in the grand canonical ensemble for large chemical potential. This is, however, not the case in the canonical ensemble. In the limit of large charge density a strongest difference between the grand canonical and canonical ensemble results is observed.

Quantum Gases in the Microcanonical Ensemble near the Thermodynamic Limit

A new method is proposed for a treatment of ideal quantum gases in the microcanonical ensemble near the thermodynamic limit. The method allows rigorous asymptotic calculations of the average number of particles and particle number fluctuations in the microcanonical ensemble. It gives also the finite-volume corrections due to exact energy conservation for the total average number of particles and for higher moments of the particle number distribution in a system approaching the thermodynamic limit. A present consideration confirms our previous findings that the scaled variance for particle number fluctuations in the microcanonical ensemble is different from that in the grand canonical ensemble even in the thermodynamic limit.
