Charm Estimate from the Dilepton Spectra

A validity of a recent estimate of an upper limit of charm production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 AGeV is critically discussed. Within a simple model we study properties of the background subtraction procedure used for an extraction of the charm signal from the analysis of dilepton spectra. We demonstrate that a production asymmetry between positively and negatively charged background muons and a large multiplicity of signal pairs leads to biased results. Therefore the applicability of this procedure for the analysis of nucleus-nucleus data should be reconsidered before final conclusions on the upper limit estimate of charm production could be drawn.

J/psi Suppression and Enhancement in Au+Au Collisions at the BNL RHIC

We consider the production of the J/psi mesons in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies in the statistical coalescence model with an exact (canonical ensemble) charm conservation. The c\bar{c} quark pairs are assumed to be created in the primary hard parton collisions, but the formation of the open and hidden charm particles takes place at the hadronization stage and follows the prescription of statistical mechanics. The dependence of the J/psi production on both the number of nucleon participants and the collision energy is studied. The model predicts the J/psi suppression for low energies, whereas at the highest RHIC energy the model reveals the J/psi enhancement.

Chemical freeze-out parameters at RHIC from microscopic model calculations

The relaxation of hot nuclear matter to an equilibrated state in the central zone of heavy-ion collisions at energies from AGS to RHIC is studied within the microscopic UrQMD model. It is found that the system reaches the (quasi)equilibrium stage for the period of 10-15 fm/$c$. Within this time the matter in the cell expands nearly isentropically with the entropy to baryon ratio $S/A = 150 - 170$. Thermodynamic characteristics of the system at AGS and at SPS energies at the endpoints of this stage are very close to the parameters of chemical and thermal freeze-out extracted from the thermal fit to experimental data. Predictions are made for the full RHIC energy $\sqrt{s} = 200$ AGeV. The formation of a resonance-rich state at RHIC energies is discussed.

Statistical Multifragmentation in Thermodynamical Limit: An Exact Solution for Phase Transitions

An exact analytical solution of the statistical multifragmentation model is found in thermodynamic limit. Excluded volume effects are taken into account in the thermodynamically self-consistent way. The model exhibits a 1-st order phase transition of the liquid-gas type. An extension of the model including the Fisher's term is also studied. The possibility of the second order phase transition at or above the critical point is discussed. The mixed phase region of the phase diagram, where the gas of nuclear fragments coexists with the infinite liquid condensate, is unambiguously identified. The peculiar thermodynamic properties of the model near the boundary between the mixed phase and the pure gaseous phase are studied. The results for the caloric curve and specific heat are presented and a physical picture of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition is clarified.

Statistical Coalescence Model with Exact Charm Conservation

The statistical coalescence model for the production of open and hidden charm is considered within the canonical ensemble formulation. The data for the J/psi multiplicity in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV are used for the model prediction of the open charm yield which has not yet been measured in these reactions.

Open Charm Enhancement in Pb+Pb Collisions at SPS

The statistical coalescence model for the production of open and hidden charm is considered within the canonical ensemble formulation. The data for the J/ψmultiplicity in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV are used for the model prediction of the open charm yield. We find a strong enhancement of the open charm production, by a factor of about 2--4, over the standard hard-collision model extrapolation from nucleon-nucleon to nucleus-nucleus collisions. A possible mechanism of the open charm enhancement in A+A collisions at the SPS energies is proposed.

Transition to resonance-rich matter in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies

The equilibration of hot and dense nuclear matter produced in the central region in central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV is studied within the microscopic transport model UrQMD. The pressure here becomes isotropic at $t \approx 5$ fm/c. Within the next 15 fm/c the expansion of the matter proceeds almost isentropically with the entropy per baryon ratio $S/A \approx 150$. During this period the equation of state in the $(P,ε)$-plane has a very simple form, $P=0.15 ε$. Comparison with the statistical model (SM) of an ideal hadron gas reveals that the time of $\approx 20$ fm/$c$ may be too short to attain the fully equilibrated state. Particularly, the fractions of resonances are overpopulated in contrast to the SM values. The creation of such a long-lived resonance-rich state slows down the relaxation to chemical equilibrium and can be detected experimentally.

Exactly Soluble Model for Nuclear Liquid-Gas Phase Transition

Thermodynamical properties of nuclear matter undergoing multifragmentation are studied within a simplified version of the statistical model. An exact analytical solution has been found for the grand canonical ensemble. Excluded volume effects are taken into account in the thermodynamically self-consistent way. In thermodynamic limit the model exhibits a first order liquid-gas phase transition with specific mixed phase properties. An extension of the model including the Fisher's term is also studied. The possibility of the second order phase transition at or above the critical point is demonstrated. The fragment mass distributions in the different regions of the phase diagram are discussed.

Van der Waals Excluded Volume Model for Lorentz Contracted Rigid Spheres

Conventional cluster and virial expansions are generalized to momentum dependent inter-particle potentials. The model with Lorentz contracted hard core potentials is considered, e.g. as hadron gas model. A Van der Waals-type model with a temperature dependent excluded volume is derived. Lorentz contraction effects at given temperature are stronger for light particles and make their effective excluded volume smaller than that of heavy ones.

Particle Freeze-out in Self-Consistent Relativistic Hydrodynamics

The particle emission in relativistic hydrodynamic model is formulated assuming a sharp 3-dimensional space-time freeze-out hypersurface. The boundary conditions correspond to the energy-momentum and charge conservation between fluid and the gas of free particles. The emission and possible feedback of particles are included into the self-consistent hydrodynamic scheme. For the time-like parts of the freeze-out hypersurface the obtained results are different from the well known Cooper-Frye formula and lead to the shock-like freeze-out. A simple-wave hydrodynamic solution is considered in detail to illustrate some aspects of new freeze-out procedure.

Equilibrium and non-equilibrium effects in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The hypothesis of local equilibrium (LE) in relativistic heavy ion collisions at energies from AGS to RHIC is checked in the microscopic transport model. We find that kinetic, thermal, and chemical equilibration of the expanding hadronic matter is nearly reached in central collisions at AGS energy for $t \geq 10$ fm/$c$ in a central cell. At these times the equation of state may be approximated by a simple dependence $P \cong (0.12-0.15) ε$. Increasing deviations of the yields and the energy spectra of hadrons from statistical model values are observed for increasing bombarding energies. The origin of these deviations is traced to the irreversible multiparticle decays of strings and many-body $(N \geq 3)$ decays of resonances. The violations of LE indicate that the matter in the cell reaches a steady state instead of idealized equilibrium. The entropy density in the cell is only about 6% smaller than that of the equilibrium state.

Local equilibrium in heavy ion collisions. Microscopic model versus statistical model analysis

The assumption of local equilibrium in relativistic heavy ion collisions at energies from 10.7 AGeV (AGS) up to 160 AGeV (SPS) is checked in the microscopic transport model. Dynamical calculations performed for a central cell in the reaction are compared to the predictions of the thermal statistical model. We find that kinetic, thermal and chemical equilibration of the expanding hadronic matter are nearly approached late in central collisions at AGS energy for $t \geq 10$ fm/$c$ in a central cell. At these times the equation of state may be approximated by a simple dependence $P \cong (0.12-0.15) ε$. Increasing deviations of the yields and the energy spectra of hadrons from statistical model values are observed for increasing energy, 40 AGeV and 160 AGeV. These violations of local equilibrium indicate that a fully equilibrated state is not reached, not even in the central cell of heavy ion collisions at energies above 10 AGeV. The origin of these findings is traced to the multiparticle decays of strings and many-body decays of resonances.

Particle Freeze-out and Discontinuities in Relativistic Hydrodynamics

Freeze-out of particles in relativistic hydrodynamics is considered across a 3-dimensional space-time hypersurface. The conservation laws for time-like parts of the freeze-out hypersurface require different values of temperature, baryonic chemical potential and flow velocity in the fluid and in the final particle spectra. We analyze this freeze-out discontinuity and its connection to the shock-wave phenomena in relativistic hydrodynamics.
