Sum rules for X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra in strongly correlated ferromagnets

It is proven that the sum rules for X-ray magnetic dichroism (XMCD) spectra that are used to separate spin and orbital contributions to the magnetic moment are formally correct for an arbitrary strength of electron-electron interactions. However, their practical application for strongly correlated systems can become complicated due to the spectral density weight spreading over a broad energy interval. Relevance of incoherent spectral density for the XMCD sum rules is illustrated by a simple model of a ferromagnet with orbital degrees of freedom.

Multiple scattering formalism for correlated systems: A KKR+DMFT approach

We present a charge and self-energy self-consistent computational scheme for correlated systems based on the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) multiple scattering theory with the many-body effects described by the means of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The corresponding local multi-orbital and energy dependent self-energy is included into the set of radial differential equations for the single-site wave functions. The KKR Green's function is written in terms of the multiple scattering path operator, the later one being evaluated using the single-site solution for the $t$-matrix that in turn is determined by the wave functions. An appealing feature of this approach is that it allows to consider local quantum and disorder fluctuations on the same footing. Within the Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) the correlated atoms are placed into a combined effective medium determined by the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) self-consistency condition. Results of corresponding calculations for pure Fe, Ni and Fe$_{x}$Ni$_{1-x}$ alloys are presented.

Correlated adatom trimer on metal surface: A continuous time quantum Monte Carlo study

The problem of three interacting Kondo impurities is solved within a numerically exact continuous time quantum Monte Carlo scheme. A suppression of the Kondo resonance by interatomic exchange interactions for different cluster geometries is investigated. It is shown that a drastic difference between the Heisenberg and Ising cases appears for antiferromagnetically coupled adatoms. The effects of magnetic frustrations in the adatom trimer are investigated, and possible connections with available experimental data are discussed.

Tunable spin transport in CrAs: role of correlation effects

Correlation effects on the electronic structure of half-metallic CrAs in zinc-blende structure are studied for different substrate lattice constants. Depending on the substrate the spectral weight of the non-quasiparticle states might be tuned from a well developed value in the case of InAs substrate to an almost negligible contribution for the GaAs one. A piezoelectric material that would allow the change in the substrate lattice parameters opens the possibility for practical investigations of the switchable (tunable) non-quasiparticle states. Since the latter are important for the tunneling magnetoresistance and related phenomena it creates new opportunities in spintronics.

Kondo resonance for orbitally degenerate systems

Formation of the Kondo state in general two-band Anderson model has been investigated within the numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations. The Abrikosov-Suhl resonance is essentially asymmetric for the model with one electron per impurity (quarter filling case) in contrast with the one-band case. An external magnetic (pseudo-magnetic) field breaking spin (orbital) degeneracy leads to asymmetric splitting and essential broadening of the many-body resonance. Unlike the standard Anderson model, the ``spin up'' Kondo peak is pinned against the Fermi level, but not suppressed by magnetic field.

Nonquasiparticle states in half-metallic ferromagnets

Anomalous magnetic and electronic properties of the half-metallic ferromagnets (HMF) have been discussed. The general conception of the HMF electronic structure which take into account the most important correlation effects from electron-magnon interactions, in particular, the spin-polaron effects, is presented. Special attention is paid to the so called non-quasiparticle (NQP) or incoherent states which are present in the gap near the Fermi level and can give considerable contributions to thermodynamic and transport properties. Prospects of experimental observation of the NQP states in core-level spectroscopy is discussed. Special features of transport properties of the HMF which are connected with the absence of one-magnon spin-flip scattering processes are investigated. The temperature and magnetic field dependences of resistivity in various regimes are calculated. It is shown that the NQP states can give a dominate contribution to the temperature dependence of the impurity-induced resistivity and in the tunnel junction conductivity. First principle calculations of the NQP-states for the prototype half-metallic material NiMnSb within the local-density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory (LDA+DMFT) are presented.

Magnetic susceptibility, exchange interactions and spin-wave spectra in the local spin density approximation

Starting from exact expression for the dynamical spin susceptibility in the time-dependent density functional theory a controversial issue about exchange interaction parameters and spin-wave excitation spectra of itinerant electron ferromagnets is reconsidered. It is shown that the original expressions for exchange integrals based on the magnetic force theorem (J. Phys. F14 L125 (1984)) are optimal for the calculations of the magnon spectrum whereas static response function is better described by the ``renormalized'' magnetic force theorem by P. Bruno (Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 087205 (2003)). This conclusion is confirmed by the {\it ab initio} calculations for Fe and Ni.

Ab-initio calculations of the optical and magneto-optical properties of moderately correlated systems: accounting for correlation effects

The influence of dynamical correlation effects on the magneto-optical properties of ferromagnetic Fe and Ni has been investigated. In addition the temperature dependence of the self-energy and its influence on the DOS and optical conductivity is considered. Magneto-optical properties were calculated on the basis of the one-particle Green's function, which was obtained from the DMFT-SPTF procedure. It is shown that dynamical correlations play a rather important role in weakly correlated Fe and substantially change the spectra for moderately correlated Ni. Magneto-optical properties obtained for both systems are found in better agreement with experiment than by conventional LDA calculations.

Exciton effects in a scaling theory of intermediate valence and Kondo systems

An interplay of the Kondo scattering and exciton effects (d-f Coulomb interaction) in the intermediate valence systems and Kondo lattices is demonstrated to lead to an essential change of the scaling behavior in comparison with the standard Anderson model. In particular, a marginal regime can occur where characteristic fluctuation rate is proportional to flow cutoff parameter. In this regime the "Kondo temperature" itself is strongly temperature dependent which may give a key to the interpretation of controversial experimental data for heavy fermion and related systems.

Nonquasiparticle states in half-metallic ferromagnet NiMnSb

Nonquasiparticle states above the Fermi energy are studied by first-principle dynamical mean field calculations for a prototype half-metallic ferromagnet, NiMnSb. We present a quantitative evaluation of the spectral weight of this characteristic feature and discuss the possible experimental investigation (BIS, NMR, STM and Andreev reflection) to clarify the existence of these states.

Ab initio electronic structure calculation of correlated systems: EMTO-DMFT approach

We propose a self-consistent method for electronic structure calculations of correlated systems, which combines the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The LSDA part is based on the exact muffin-tin orbital approach, meanwhile the DMFT uses a perturbation scheme that includes the T matrix with fluctuation exchange approximation. The current LSDA+DMFT implementation fulfills both self-energy and charge self-consistency requirements. We present results on the electronic structure calculations for bulk 3d transition metals (Cr, Fe, and Ni) and for Fe/Cr magnetic multilayers. The latter demonstrates the importance of the correlation effects for the properties of magnetic heterostructures.

Spectral density functional approach to electronic correlations and magnetism in crystals

A novel approach to electronic correlations and magnetism of crystals based on realistic electronic structure calculations is reviewed. In its simplest form it is a combination of the ``local density approximation'' (LDA) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approaches. Using numerically exact QMC solution to the effective DMFT multi-orbital quantum-impurity problem, a successful description of electronic structure and finite temperature magnetism of transition metals has been achieved. We discuss a simplified perturbation LDA+DMFT scheme which combines the T-matrix and fluctuation-exchange approximation (TM-FLEX). We end with a discussion of cluster generalization of the non-local DMFT scheme and its applications to the magnetism and superconductivity of high-Tc superconductors.

Electronic structure of magnetic molecules V15: LDA+U calculations, X-ray emission and photoelectron spectra

Electronic structure of V$_{15}$ magnetic molecules (K$_6$ [V$_{15}$ As$_6$ O$_{42}$ (H$_2$O)] \cdot 8H$_2$O)$ has been studied using LSDA+U band structure calculations, and measurements of X-ray photoelectron (valence band, core levels) and X-ray fluorescence spectra (vanadium K$β_5$ and L$_{2,3}$, and oxygen K$α$). Experiments confirm that vanadium ions are tetravalent in V$_{15}$, and their local atomic structure is close to that of CaV$_3$O$_7$. Comparison of experimental data with the results of electronic structure calculations show that the LSDA+U method provides a description of the electronic structure of V$_{15}$ which agrees well with experiments.

The spin angular gradient approximation in the density functional theory

A spin angular gradient approximation for the exchange correlation magnetic field in the density functional formalism is proposed. The usage of such corrections leads to a consistent spin dynamical approach beyond the local approximation. The proposed technique does not contain any approximations for the form of potential and can be used in modern full potential band structure methods. The obtained results indicate that the direct 'potential' exchange in 3d magnets is rather small compared to the indirect 'kinetic' exchange, thus justifies the dynamical aspect of the local density approximation in 3d metals.

Kink nucleation in two-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model

A computer simulation of thermofluctuation nucleation of kinks on dislocations and their dynamics is carried out in the framework of two-dimensional (2D) Frenkel-Kontorova model. It is shown that at relatively low temperatures and applied stresses the kinks can appear as a result of developing instability of phonon modes localized in the vicinity of the dislocation. The transition from this mechanism to the ordinary thermofluctuation kink nucleation with temperature increase can reveal itself in the peculiarities of yield stress temperature dependence.

Destruction of the Kondo effect by a local measurement

We show that the local spin measurement which decoheres the localized spin in a Kondo system, suppresses the Abrikosov-Suhl resonance and destroys the Kondo effect. This happens due to elimination of the entanglement between the localized spin and the conduction electrons, and differs essentially from smearing of the resonance by dissipation. Considering decoherence by a spin bath, we predict that the Kondo effect disappears when the Kondo temperature becomes smaller than the coupling with a bath. This effect can be detected in experiments on ``quantum corrals'' or quantum dots doped by impurities with internal degrees of freedom.
