Many-Spin Interactions and Spin Excitations in Mn12

In this work, the many-spin interactions taking place in Mn12 large-spin clusters are extensively studied using the 8-spin model Hamiltonian, for which we determine the possible parameters based on experimental data. Account of the many-spin excitations satisfactorily explains positions of the neutron scattering peaks, results of EPR measurements and the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility. In particular, strong Dzyaloshinsky-Morya interactions are found to be important for description of neutron scattering data. The role of these interactions for the relaxation of the magnetization is qualitatively discussed.

On the phonon-induced superconductivity of disordered alloys

A model of alloy is considered which includes both quenched disorder in the electron subsystem (``alloy'' subsystem) and electron-phonon interaction. For given approximate solution for the alloy part of the problem, which is assumed to be conserving in Baym's sense, we construct the generating functional and derive the Eliashberg-type equations which are valid to the lowest order in the adiabatic parameter. The renormalization of bare electron-phonon interaction vertices by disorder is taken into account consistently with the approximation for the alloy self-energy. For the case of exact configurational averaging the same set of equations is established within the usual T-matrix approach. We demonstrate that for any conserving approximation for the alloy part of the self-energy the Anderson's theorem holds in the case of isotropic singlet pairing provided disorder renormalizations of the electron-phonon interaction vertices are neglected. Taking account of the disorder renormalization of the electron-phonon interaction we analyze general equations qualitatively and present the expressions for $T_{c}$ for the case of weak and intermediate electron-phonon coupling. Disorder renormalizations of the logarithmic corrections to the effective coupling, which arise when the effective interaction kernel for the Cooper channel has the second energy scale, as well as the renormalization of the dilute paramagnetic impurity suppression are discussed.

Peculiarities of phonon spectra and lattice heat capacity in Ir and Rh

A simple pseudopotential model is proposed, which allows the phonon spectra and temperature dependence of the lattice heat capacity of Ir and Rh be described with a high enough accuracy. A careful comparison of the calculated and experimental values of the lattice heat capacity is carried out, with the procedure of the identification of the phonon contribution to the heat capacity and determination of the characteristics (momenta) of the phonon density of states from the experimental values of the total heat capacity of metal at a constant pressure being described in detail. The results of the theoretical calculations explain, in particular, such peculiar feature of Ir and Rh, unusual for cubic metals, as a sharp (more than by a factor of 1.5) decrease in the effective Debye temperature with increasing termperature. The temperature dependence of the mean square amplitude of atomic displacements in Ir and Rh has been calculated. Basing on the band calculations the manifestation of the Kohn singularities in the phonon spectra of Ir are discussed.

Electronic phase transitions in one-dimensional spinless fermion model with competing interactions

An accurate numerical consideration is carried out of the ground state for the simplified model which is traditionally used for the description of Verwey transition and related phenomena. In the framework of 1D spinless fermion model, the effects of next-nearest neighbour (NNN) interaction on the metal-insulator transition are investigated for electron concentrations 1/2 and 2/3. It is shown that for large enough NNN transfer integrals the electronic topological transition of metal-metal type is also possible. The corresponding phase diagrams are presented.

Ab initio calculations of quasiparticle band structure in correlated systems: LDA++ approach

We discuss a general approach to a realistic theory of the electronic structure in materials containing correlated d- or f- electrons. The main feature of this approach is the taking into account the energy dependence of the electron self-energy with the momentum dependence being neglected (local approximation). In the case of strong interactions (U/W>>1 - rare-earth system) the Hubbard-I approach is the most suitable. Starting from an exact atomic Green function with the constrained density matrix the band structure problem is formulated as the functional problem on Nmm' for f-electrons and the standard LDA-functional for delocalized electrons. In the case of moderate correlations (U/W=1 metal-insulator regime) we start from the dynamical mean field iterative perturbation scheme (IPS) of G. Kotliar et. al. and also make use of our multiband atomic Green function. Finally for the weak interactions (U/W<1 -transition metals) the self-consistent diagrammatic fluctuation- exchange (FLEX)-approach of N. Bickers and D. Scalapino is generalized to the realistic multiband case. We presents two-band, two-dimensional model calculations for all three regimes. A realistic calculation in Hubbard-I scheme with the exact solution of the on-site multielectron problem for f(d)- shells was performed for mixed-valence 4f compound TmSe, and for the classical Mott insulator NiO.

Close Packing of Atoms, Geometric Frustration and the Formation of Heterogeneous States in Crystals

To describe structural peculiarities in inhomogeneous media caused by the tendency to the close packing of atoms a formalism based on the using of the Riemann geometry methods (which were successfully applied lately to the description of structures of quasicrystals and glasses) is developed. Basing on this formalism we find in particular the criterion of stability of precipitates of the Frank-Kasper phases in metallic systems. The nature of the ''rhenium effect'' in W-Re alloys is discussed.

Scaling picture of magnetism formation in the anomalous f-systems: interplay of the Kondo effect and spin dynamics

Formation of magnetically ordered state in the Kondo lattices is treated within the degenerate $s-f$ exchange and Coqblin-Schrieffer models. The Kondo renormalizations of the effective coupling parameter, magnetic moment and spin excitation frequencies are calculated within perturbation theory. The results of one-loop scaling consideration of the magnetic state in Kondo lattices are analyzed. The dependence of the critical values of the bare model parameters on the type of the magnetic phase and space dimensionality is investigated. Renormalization of the effective Kondo temperature by the interatomic exchange interactions is calculated. An important role of the character of spin dynamics (existence of well-defined magnon excitations, presence of magnetic anisotropy etc.) is demonstrated. The regime of strongly suppressed magnetic moments, which corresponds to magnetic heavy-fermion system, may occur in a rather narrow parameter region only. At the same time, in the magnetically ordered phases the renormalized Kondo temperature depends weakly on the bare coupling parameter in some interval. The critical behavior, corresponding to the magnetic transition with changing the bare $s-f$ coupling parameter, is investigated. In the vicinity of the strong coupling regime, the spectrum of the Bose excitations becomes softened. Thus on the borderline of magnetic instability the Fermi-liquid picture is violated in some temerature interval due to scattering of electrons by these bosons. This may explain the fact that a non-Fermi-liquid behavior often takes place in the heavy-fermion systems near the onset of magnetic ordering.

1/N Expansion for Critical Exponents of Magnetic Phase Transitions in CP^{N-1} Model at 2<d<4

Critical exponents in the CP^{N-1} model, which describes localized-moment ferro- and antiferromagnets (N=2 in the Heisenberg model), are calculated from two-particle Green's functions to first order in 1/N. For d=2+εthe results agree with earlier renormalization group calculations. For d=3 the leading 1/N-corrections turn out to be very large at N=2. For d=4-εthe 1/N-corrections are small at any N and insufficient to describe correctly the magnetic phase transition.

On the Self-Consistent Spin-Wave Theory of Two-Dimensional Magnets With Impurities

The self-consistent spin-wave theory is applied to investigate the magnetization distribution around the impurity in isotropic and easy-axis two-dimensional ferro- and antiferromagents. The temperature dependences of host magnetization disturbance and impurity magnetization are calculated. The short-range order in the isotropic case is investigated. Importance of dynamic and kinematic interactions of spin waves is demonstrated.
