The Fractional Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We examine a fractional version of the discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger (dnls) equation, where the usual discrete laplacian is replaced by a fractional discrete laplacian. This leads to the replacement of the usual nearest-neighbor interaction to a long-range intersite coupling that decreases asymptotically as a power-law. For the linear case, we compute both, the spectrum of plane waves and the mean square displacement of an initially localized excitation in closed form, in terms of regularized hypergeometric functions, as a function of the fractional exponent. In the nonlinear case, we compute numerically the low-lying nonlinear modes of the system and their stability, as a function of the fractional exponent of the discrete laplacian. The selftrapping transition threshold of an initially localized excitation shifts to lower values as the exponent is decreased and, for a fixed exponent and zero nonlinearity, the trapped fraction remains greater than zero.

Linear impurity modes in an electrical lattice: Theory and Experiment

We examine theoretically and experimentally the localized %and extended electrical modes existing in a bi-inductive electrical lattice containing a bulk or a surface capacitive impurity. By means of the formalism of lattice Green's functions, we are able to obtain closed-form expressions for the frequencies of the impurity (bound-state) eigenmodes and for their associated spatial profiles. This affords us a systematic understanding of how these mode properties change as a function of the system parameters. We test these analytical results against experimental measurements, in both the bulk and surface cases, and find very good agreement. Lastly, we turn to a series of quench experiments, where either a parameter of the lattice or the lattice geometry itself is rapidly switched between two values or configurations. In all cases, we are able to naturally explain the results of such quench experiments from the larger analytical picture that emerges as a result of the detailed characterization of the impurity-mode solution branches.

Saturable impurity in an optical array: Green function approach

We examine a one-dimensional linear waveguide array containing a single saturable waveguide. By using the formalism of lattice Green functions, we compute in closed form the localized mode and the transmission across the impurity in closed form. For the single saturable impurity in the bulk, we find that an impurity state is always possible, independent of the impurity strength. For the surface saturable impurity case, a minimum nonlinearity strength is necessary to create a bound state. The transmission coefficient across the impurity shows a sub-linear behavior with an absence of any resonance. The dynamical selftrapping at the bulk impurity site shows no selftrapping transition, and it resembles the behavior of a weak linear impurity. For the surface impurity however, there is a selftrapping transition at a critical nonlinearity value. The asymptotic propagation of the optical power shows a ballistic character in both cases, with a speed that decreases with an increase in nonlinearity strength.

Disorder-free weak dynamic localization in deformable lattices

We study the electron transport in a deformable lattice modeled in the semiclassical approximation as a discrete nonlinear elastic chain where acoustic phonons are in thermal equilibrium at temperature T. We reveal that an effective dynamic disorder induced in the system due to thermalized phonons is not strong enough to produce Anderson localization. However, for weak nonlinearity we observe a transition between ballistic (low T) and diffusive (high T) regimes, while for strong nonlinearity the transition occurs between the localized soliton (low T) and diffusive (high T) regimes. Thus, the electron-phonon interaction results in weak temperature-dependent dynamic localization.

Phase transition in PT symmetric active plasmonic systems

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are coherent electromagnetic surface waves trapped on an insulator-conductor interface. The SPPs decay exponentially along the propagation due to conductor losses, restricting the SPPs propagation length to few microns. Gain materials can be used to counterbalance the aforementioned losses. We provide an exact expression for the gain, in terms of the optical properties of the interface, for which the losses are eliminated. In addition, we show that systems characterized by lossless SPP propagation are related to PT symmetric systems. Furthermore, we derive an analytical critical value of the gain describing a phase transition between lossless and prohibited SPPs propagation. The regime of the aforementioned propagation can be directed by the optical properties of the system under scrutiny. Finally, we perform COMSOL simulations verifying the theoretical findings.

Interplay of disorder and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry

We examine a one-dimensional $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric binary lattice in the presence of diagonal disorder. We focus on the wave transport phenomena of localized and extended input beams for this disordered system. In the pure $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric case, we derive an exact expression for the evolution of light localization in terms of the typical parameters of the system. In this case localization is enhanced as the gain and loss parameter in increased. In the presence of disorder, we observe that the presence of gain and loss inhibits (favors) the transport for localized (extended) excitations.

Self-trapping threshold in disordered nonlinear photonic lattices

We investigate numerically and experimentally the influence of coupling disorder on the self-trapping dynamics in nonlinear one-dimensional optical waveguide arrays. The existence of a lower and upper bound of the effective average propagation constant allows for a generalized definition of the threshold power for the onset of soliton localization. When compared to perfectly ordered systems, this threshold is found to decrease in the presence of coupling disorder.

Bounded dynamics of finite PT-symmetric magnetoinductive arrays

We examine the conditions for the existence of bounded dynamical phases for finite PT-symmetric arrays of split-ring resonators. The dimer (N=2), trimer (N=3) and pentamer (N=5) cases are solved in closed form, while for $N>5$ results were computed numerically for several gain/loss spatial distributions. It is found that the parameter stability window decreases monotonically with the size of the array.

Optical surface modes in the presence of nonlinearity and disorder

We investigate numerically the effect of the competition of disorder, nonlinearity, and boundaries on the Anderson localization of light waves in finite-size, one-dimensional waveguide arrays. Using the discrete Anderson - nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the propagation of the mode amplitudes up to some finite distance is monitored. The analysis is based on the calculated localization length and the participation number, two standard measures for the statistical description of Anderson localization. For relatively weak disorder and nonlinearity, a higher disorder strength is required to achieve the same degree of localization at the edge than in the interior of the array, in agreement with recent experimental observations in the linear regime. However, for relatively strong disorder and/or nonlinearity, this behavior is reversed and it is now easier to localize an excitation at the edge than in the interior.

Nonlinear localized modes in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

The modulational instability and discrete matter wave solitons in dipolar BEC, loaded into a deep optical lattice, are investigated analytically and numerically. The process of modulational instability of nonlinear plane matter waves in a dipolar nonlinear lattice is studied and the regions of instability are established. The existence and stability of bulk discrete solitons are analyzed analytically and confirmed by numerical simulations. In a marked contrast with the usual DNLS behavior (no dipolar interactions), we found a region where the two fundamental modes are simultaneously unstable allowing enhanced mobility across the lattice for large norm values. To study the existence and properties of surface discrete solitons, an analysis of the dimer configuration is performed. The properties of symmetric and antisymmetric modes including the stability diagrams and bifurcations are investigated in closed form. For the case of a bulk medium, properties of fundamental on-site and inter-site localized modes are analyzed. On-site and inter-site surface localized modes are studied finding that they do not exist when nonlocal interactions predominate with respect to local ones.

Bulk and surface magnetoinductive breathers in binary metamaterials

We study theoretically the existence of bulk and surface discrete breathers in a one-dimensional magnetic metamaterial comprised of a periodic binary array of split-ring resonators. The two types of resonators differ in the size of their slits and this leads to different resonant frequencies. In the framework of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) we construct several types of breather excitations for both the energy-conserved and the dissipative-driven systems by continuation of trivial breather solutions from the anticontinuous limit to finite couplings. Numerically-exact computations that integrate the full model equations confirm the quality of the RWA results. Moreover, it is demonstrated that discrete breathers can spontaneously appear in the dissipative-driven system as a results of a fundamental instability.

LOcalized modes on an Ablowitz-Ladik nonlinear impurity

We study localized modes on a single Ablowitz-Ladik impurity embedded in the bulk or at the surface of a one-dimensional linear lattice. Exact expressions are obtained for the bound state profile and energy. Dynamical excitation of the localized mode reveals exponentially-high amplitude oscillations of the spatial profile at the impurity location. The presence of a surface increases the minimum nonlinearity to effect a dynamical selftrapping.

Interface localized modes and hybrid lattice solitons in waveguide arrays

We discuss the formation of guided modes localized at the interface separat- ing two different periodic photonic lattices. Employing the effective discrete model, we analyze linear and nonlinear interface modes and also predict the existence of stable interface solitons including the hybrid staggered/unstaggered lattice solitons with the tails belonging to spectral gaps of different types.

Two-color discrete localized modes and resonant scattering in arrays of nonlinear quadratic optical waveguides

We analyze the properties and stability of two-color discrete localized modes in arrays of channel waveguides where tunable quadratic nonlinearity is introduced as a nonlinear defect by periodic poling of a single waveguide in the array. We show that, depending on the value of the phase mismatch and the input power, such two-color defect modes can be realized in three different localized states. We also study resonant light scattering in the arrays with the defect waveguide.

Discrete solitons and nonlinear surface modes in semi-infinite waveguide arrays

We discuss the formation of self-trapped localized states near the edge of a semi-infinite array of nonlinear waveguides. We study a crossover from nonlinear surface states to discrete solitons by analyzing the families of odd and even modes centered at different distances from the surface, and reveal the physical mechanism of the nonlinearity-induced stabilization of surface modes.

Fano resonance in quadratic waveguide arrays

We study resonant light scattering in arrays of channel optical waveguides where tunable quadratic nonlinearity is introduced as nonlinear defects by periodic poling of single (or several) waveguides in the array. We describe novel features of wave scattering that can be observed in this structure and show that it is a good candidate for the first observation of Fano resonance in nonlinear optics.

Exponential versus linear amplitude decay in damped oscillators

We comment of the widespread belief among some undergraduate students that the amplitude of any harmonic oscillator in the presence of any type of friction, decays exponentially in time. To dispel that notion, we compare the amplitude decay for a harmonic oscillator in the presence of (i) viscous friction and (ii) dry friction. It is shown that, in the first case, the amplitude decays exponentially with time while in the second case, it decays linearly with time.

Nonlinear Impurity in a Semi-Infinite Lattice

We examine the formation of bound states on a generalized nonlinear impurity located at or near the beginning (surface) of a linear, tight-binding semi-infinite lattice. Using the formalism of lattice Green functions, we obtain in closed form the number of bound states as well as their energies and probability profiles, for different nonlinearity parameter values and nonlinearity exponents, at different distances from the surface. It is shown that close to the surface, the amount of nonlinearity needed to create a bound state or to effect dynamical selftrapping, increases (decreases) depending on whether the exponent is smaller (larger) than, approximately, two.
