Magnetic-Field-Induced insulator-conductor transition in SU(2) quenched lattice gauge theory

We study the correlator of two vector currents in quenched $SU\lr{2}$ lattice gauge theory with a chirally invariant lattice Dirac operator with a constant external magnetic field. It is found that in the confinement phase the correlator of the components of the current parallel to the magnetic field decays much slower than in the absence of a magnetic field, while for other components the correlation length slightly decreases. We apply the maximal entropy method to extract the corresponding spectral function. In the limit of zero frequency this spectral function yields the electric conductivity of the quenched theory. We find that in the confinement phase the external magnetic field induces nonzero electric conductivity along the direction of the field, transforming the system from an insulator into an anisotropic conductor. In the deconfinement phase the conductivity does not exhibit any sizable dependence on the magnetic field.

Probing the finite temperature phase transition with Nf=2 nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions

The critical temperature and the nature of the QCD finite temperature phase transition are determined for Nf=2 dynamical flavors of nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions. The calculations are performed on large lattices with temporal extents Nt=12, 10 and 8, and lattice spacings down to a = 0.075 fm. We find the deconfinement and chiral phasetransitions to take place at the same temperature. Our results are in broad agreement with a second order phase transition in the chiral limit. The critical temperature at the physical quark mass is found to be Tc = 174(3)(6) MeV.

Quark electric dipole moment induced by magnetic field

We show numerically that quarks develop an electric dipole moment in the direction of a sufficiently intense magnetic field due to local fluctuations of topological charge. This anomalous CP-odd effect is a spin analogue of the Chiral Magnetic Effect in QCD.

Numerical study of chiral symmetry breaking in non-Abelian gauge theory with background magnetic field

We investigate the effect of a uniform background magnetic field on the chiral symmetry breaking in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on the lattice. We observe that the chiral condensate grows linearly with the field strength B up to \sqrt{e B} = 3 GeV as predicted by chiral perturbation theory for full QCD. As the temperature increases the coefficient in front of the linear term gets smaller. In the magnetic field near-zero eigenmodes of the Dirac operator tend to have more regular structure with larger (compared to zero-field case) Hausdorff dimensionality. We suggest that the delocalization of near-zero eigenmodes plays a crucial role in the enhancement of the chiral symmetry breaking.

Numerical study of chiral magnetic effect in quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory

A possible experimental observation of the chiral magnetic effect in heavy ion collisions at RHIC was recently reported by the STAR Collaboration. We study signatures of this effect in SU(2) lattice gluodynamics with the chirally invariant Dirac operator. We find that at zero temperature the local fluctuations of an electric current of quarks and chirality fluctuations increase with external Abelian magnetic field. The external magnetic field leads to spatial separation of the quark's electric charges. The separation increases with the strength of the magnetic field. As temperature gets higher the dependence of these quantities on the strength of the magnetic field becomes weaker. In the deconfinement phase the local fluctuations of the chiral density and of the spatial components of the quarks electric current are large and are almost independent on the external magnetic field. The local fluctuations of the electric charge density decrease with the strength of the magnetic field in this phase.

Chiral magnetization of non-Abelian vacuum: a lattice study

The chiral magnetization properties of cold and hot vacua are studied using quenched simulations in lattice Yang-Mills theory. In weak external magnetic fields the magnetization is proportional to the first power of the magnetic field. We evaluate numerically the coefficient of the proportionality (the chiral susceptibility) using near-zero eigenmodes of overlap fermions. We found that the product of the chiral susceptibility and the chiral condensate equals to 46(3) MeV. This value is very close to the phenomenological value of 50 MeV. In strong fields the magnetization is a nonlinear function of the applied magnetic field. We find that the nonlinear features of the magnetization are well described by an inverse tangent function. The magnetization is weakly sensitive to temperature in the confinement phase.

Lattice QCD in strong magnetic fields

Vacuum of Quantum Chromodynamics in very strong (hadron-scale) magnetic fields exhibits many interesting nonperturbative effects. Some of these effects can be studied with the help of lattice simulations in quenched QCD. We review our recent results demonstrating that very strong external magnetic fields lead to (1) the enhancement of the chiral symmetry breaking [the quark condensate rises with the increase of the external magnetic field]; (2) the chiral magnetization of the QCD vacuum [spins of the quarks turn parallel to the external field]; (3) the chiral magnetic effect [a CP-odd generation of the electric current of quarks directed along the magnetic field]; (4) a CP-odd generation of the anomalous quark electric dipole moment along the axis of magnetic field. The first three effects were already predicted theoretically, and subsequently observed numerically in our simulations, while the fourth effect is a new result.

Numerical evidence of chiral magnetic effect in lattice gauge theory

The chiral magnetic effect is the generation of electric current of quarks along external magnetic field in the background of topologically nontrivial gluon fields. There is a recent evidence that this effect is observed by the STAR Collaboration in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. In our paper we study qualitative signatures of the chiral magnetic effect using quenched lattice simulations. We find indications that the electric current is indeed enhanced in the direction of the magnetic field both in equilibrium configurations of the quantum gluon fields and in a smooth gluon background with nonzero topological charge. In the confinement phase the magnetic field enhances the local fluctuations of both the electric charge and chiral charge densities. In the deconfinement phase the effects of the magnetic field become smaller, possibly due to thermal screening. Using a simple model of a fireball we obtain a good agreement between our data and experimental results of the STAR Collaboration.

The topological structure of SU(2) gluodynamics at T > 0 : an analysis using the Symanzik action and Neuberger overlap fermions

We study SU(2) gluodynamics at finite temperature on both sides of the deconfining phase transition. We create the lattice ensembles using the tree-level tadpole-improved Symanzik action. The Neuberger overlap Dirac operator is used to determine the following three aspects of vacuum structure: (i) The topological susceptibility is evaluated at various temperatures across the phase transition, (ii) the overlap fermion spectral density is determined and found to depend on the Polyakov loop above the phase transition and (iii) the corresponding localization properties of low-lying eigenmodes are investigated. Finally, we compare with zero temperature results.

Entanglement entropy in lattice gauge theories

We report on the recent progress in theoretical and numerical studies of entanglement entropy in lattice gauge theories. It is shown that the concept of quantum entanglement between gauge fields in two complementary regions of space can only be introduced if the Hilbert space of physical states is extended in a certain way. In the extended Hilbert space, the entanglement entropy can be partially interpreted as the classical Shannon entropy of the flux of the gauge fields through the boundary between the two regions. Such an extension leads to a reduction procedure which can be easily implemented in lattice simulations by constructing lattices with special topology. This enables us to measure the entanglement entropy in lattice Monte-Carlo simulations. On the simplest example of Z2 lattice gauge theory in (2 + 1) dimensions we demonstrate the relation between entanglement entropy and the classical entropy of the field flux. For SU(2) lattice gauge theory in four dimensions, we find a signature of non-analytic dependence of the entanglement entropy on the size of the region. We also comment on the holographic interpretation of the entanglement entropy.

Finite-temperature chiral condensate and low-lying Dirac eigenvalues in quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory

The spectrum of low-lying eigenvalues of overlap Dirac operator in quenched SU(2) lattice gauge theory with tadpole-improved Symanzik action is studied at finite temperatures in the vicinity of the confinement-deconfinement phase transition defined by the expectation value of the Polyakov line. The value of the chiral condensate obtained from the Banks-Casher relation is found to drop down rapidly at T = Tc, though not going to zero. At Tc' = 1.5 Tc = 480 MeV the chiral condensate decreases rapidly one again and becomes either very small or zero. At T < Tc the distributions of small eigenvalues are universal and are well described by chiral orthogonal ensemble of random matrices. In the temperature range above Tc where both the chiral condensate and the expectation value of the Polyakov line are nonzero the distributions of small eigenvalues are not universal. Here the eigenvalue spectrum is better described by a phenomenological model of dilute instanton - anti-instanton gas.

Entanglement entropy in gauge theories and the holographic principle for electric strings

We consider quantum entanglement between gauge fields in some region of space A and its complement B. It is argued that the Hilbert space of physical states of gauge theories cannot be decomposed into a direct product of Hilbert spaces of states localized in A and B. The reason is that elementary excitations in gauge theories - electric strings - are associated with closed loops rather than points in space, and there are closed loops which belong both to A and B. Direct product structure and hence the reduction procedure with respect to the fields in B can only be defined if the Hilbert space of physical states is extended by including the states of electric strings which can open on the boundary of A. The positions of string endpoints on this boundary are the additional degrees of freedom which also contribute to the entanglement entropy. We explicitly demonstrate this for the three-dimensional Z2 lattice gauge theory both numerically and using a simple trial ground state wave function. The entanglement entropy appears to be saturated almost completely by the entropy of string endpoints, thus reminding of a ``holographic principle'' in quantum gravity and AdS/CFT correspondence.

Numerical study of entanglement entropy in SU(2) lattice gauge theory

The entropy of entanglement between a three-dimensional slab of thickness l and its complement is studied numerically for four-dimensional SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We find a signature of a nonanalytic behavior of the entanglement entropy, which was predicted recently for large N_c confining gauge theories in the framework of AdS/CFT correspondence. The derivative of the entanglement entropy over l is likely to have a discontinuity at some l = l_c. It is argued that such behavior persists even at finite temperatures, probably turning into a sort of crossover for temperatures larger than the temperature of the deconfinement phase transition. We also confirm that the entanglement entropy contains quadratically divergent l-independent term, and that the nondivergent terms behave as the inverse square of l at small distances.

Z2 electric strings and center vortices in SU(2) lattice gauge theory

We study the representations of SU(2) lattice gauge theory in terms of sums over the worldsheets of center vortices and Z2 electric strings, i.e. surfaces which open on the Wilson loop. It is shown that in contrast to center vortices the density of electric Z2 strings diverges in the continuum limit of the theory independently of the gauge fixing, however, their contribution to the Wilson loop yields physical string tension due to non-positivity of their statistical weight in the path integral, which is in turn related to the presence of Z2 topological monopoles in the theory.

Finite temperature Lattice QCD with two flavors of improved Wilson fermions

We present results of finite temperature QCD from N_f=2 flavors of non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions on lattices with N_t=8, 10 and 12. The transition temperature T_c is determined for the first time at lattice spacings as low as a = 0.08 fm, albeit at pion masses 1.3 < r_0 m_π. We furthermore compute the screening masses in various color channels at T>T_c.

Rigidity and percolation of center vortices

Effective action of center vortices in SU(2) lattice gauge theory is investigated by studying the correlation between the action density on their worldsheets and their geometric properties. It turns out that center vortices are rigid, however, their dynamics is more complicated than that of rigid random surfaces, since some coupling constants have nonstandard scaling dimensions. As a result, the properties of center vortices are almost completely determined by curvature-dependent effects. This, in turn, provides a qualitative explanation of vortex percolation.

Random walks of Wilson loops in the screening regime

Dynamics of Wilson loops in pure Yang-Mills theories is analyzed in terms of random walks of the holonomies of the gauge field on the gauge group manifold. It is shown that such random walks should necessarily be free. The distribution of steps of these random walks is related to the spectrum of string tensions of the theory and to certain cumulants of Yang-Mills curvature tensor. It turns out that when colour charges are completely screened, the holonomies of the gauge field can change only by the elements of the group center, which indicates that in the screening regime confinement persists due to thin center vortices. Thick center vortices are also considered and the emergence of such stepwise changes in the limits of infinitely thin vortices and infinitely large loops is demonstrated.
