Higgs potential bounds on extra quark-lepton generations

We consider the bounds for the values of higgs mass $M_H$ and of the mass of the extra quarks and leptons $M_{extra}$ derived from the stability of vacuum and from the absence of Landau pole in Higgs potential. We find that in the case of the absence of new physics up to the GUT scale the bounds for the mass of the 4th generation are so restrictive that the negative result of CDF search for extra quarks closes the window for fourth generation. In the case of the absence of new physics up to $10^5$ GeV we get weaker but still nontrivial bounds on $M_H$ and $M_{extra}$ as well.

A Simple Way to Estimate the Value of $\barα\equivα(m^2_Z)$

To obtain the value of electromagnetic coupling constant at $q^2=m^2_Z$, $\barα$, which plays a key role in electroweak physics one has to integrate the cross-section of $e^+e^-$-annihilation into hadrons divided by $(s-m^2_Z)$ over $s$ from threshold to infinity. By combining, for each flavor channel, the contribution of lowest resonance with the perturbative QCD continuum, we obtain $1/\barα = 128.90\pm 0.06 $ a result which is close to known result obtained with purely experimental inputs, i.e. $1/\barα = 128.87\pm 0.12$.

First Evidence for Electroweak Radiative Corrections from the New Precision Data

The analysis of the newest data on the leptonic $Z$-decays and $m_W$ appears to reveal the first manifestations of electroweak radiative corrections. In fact, these data differ, at the level of $2σ$, from their electroweak Born values, while they agree, to within $1σ$, with the theoretical values which take the electroweak radiative corrections into account. Previous data were within $1σ$ in agreement with both sets of values.

The Values of $m_t$ and $\bar{α_s}$ Derived from the Non-Observation of Electroweak Radiative Corrections at LEP: Global Fit

A set of equations representing the $W/Z$ mass ratio and various observables of $Z$ decays in terms of $\barα\equivα(m_Z)$, $G_μ$, $m_Z$, $m_t$, $m_H$, $\barα_{s} \equivα_{s} (m_Z)$, $m_b$ and $m_τ$ (all other fermion masses being neglected) are compared with the latest data of the four LEP detectors, which at the level of one standard deviation coincide with their Born values. Our global fit gives: $m_t = 161^{+ 15 +16}_{-16 -22} \barα_{s} = 0.119 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.002$, where the central values correspond to $m_H = 300$ GeV, the first errors are statistical and the second ones represent shifts of the central values corresponding to $m_H = 1000$ GeV($+$) and 60 GeV($-$). The predicted mass of the top is smaller than in the recent fits by 4 GeV. The {\it predicted} values of $m_W/m_Z$ and the LEP observables, based on the fitted values of $m_t$ and $\barα_s$, show a weak dependence on $m_H$ and differ by several {\it predicted} standard deviations from the corresponding Born values. The uncertainties of the predicted values and their deviations from the corresponding Born values determine the experimental accuracy required to observe electroweak radiative corrections.

Do Present LEP Data Provide Evidence for Electroweak Corrections?

The Born approximation, based on $\barα\equivα(m_Z)$ instead of $α$, reproduces all electroweak precision measurements within their $(1σ)$ accuracy. The low upper limits for the genuinely electroweak corrections constitute one of the major achievements of LEP. The astonishing smallness of these corrections results from the cancellation of a large positive contribution from the heavy top quark and large negative contributions from all other virtual particles. It is precisely the non-observation of electroweak radiative corrections that places stringent upper and lower limits on the top mass.
