Electromagnetic response of two interacting topological insulator spheres in external fields

We study the static electromagnetic response of two spherical topological insulators embedded in a dielectric medium and subjected to a uniform external electric field. The gapped surface states are described by a piecewise constant axion field, which induces a topological magnetoelectric coupling localized at the spherical interfaces. {More generally, the same formalism applies to isotropic magnetoelectric media characterized by an effective scalar magnetoelectric response.} The electrostatic problem is solved at zeroth order using bispherical coordinates, allowing for an exact treatment of both parallel and perpendicular orientations of the external field relative to the center-to-center axis. The resulting mode expansions are determined by three-term recurrence relations, which are solved perturbatively for nonoverlapping spheres. The { magnetoelectric}-induced response is then computed to leading order in the fine-structure constant {(or, more generally, in the effective coupling strength)}. The induced sources are purely interfacial and generate distinct magnetostatic field configurations in the parallel and perpendicular geometries. Closed-form series representations for the induced vector potential and magnetic field are obtained in terms of the zeroth-order electrostatic coefficients. These results provide an analytically controlled description of {interaction-induced magnetostatics in coupled spherical magnetoelectric systems}.

Electromagnetic radiation mediated by topological surface states

We study electromagnetic radiation from classical sources near a planar interface separating a topological and a trivial insulator, modeled within axion electrodynamics. The system features a piecewise constant $θ$-term that encodes the magnetoelectric response of topological surface states. Treating this coupling perturbatively, we derive analytical corrections to the standard Liénard-Wiechert potentials and obtain modified radiation fields in the far zone. As applications, we analyze the emission from linear antennas and the bremsstrahlung radiation of accelerated charges near the interface. For antennas, the surface Hall response breaks axial symmetry and produces azimuthal modulations that grow with the electrical length, leading to distinct scaling behaviors in the total and angular radiated power. {For accelerated charges, the emitted intensity is uniformly reduced by a factor $1 - (σ_{\mathrm{Hall}} / 2εv)^2$, which we interpret as a process-specific attenuation of the radiative strength due to interference with its image magnetic monopole inside the topological medium.} These results reveal how topological surface states mediate measurable modifications to classical radiation, establishing a link between axion electrodynamics, topological phases, and field theories with spatially varying couplings.

Radiation of a short linear antenna above a topologically insulating half-space

The topological magnetoelectric effect (TME) is a unique macroscopic manifestation of quantum states of matter possessing topological order and it is described by axion electrodynamics. In three-dimensional topological insulators, for instance, the axion coupling is of the order of the fine structure constant, and hence a perturbative analysis of the field equations is plenty justified. In this paper we use Green's function techniques to obtain time-dependent solutions to the axion field equations in the presence of a planar domain-wall separating two media with different topological order. We apply our results to investigate the radiation of a short linear antenna near the domain-wall.
