Endcap-Type Paul Trap for Precision Spectroscopy and Studies of Controlled Interactions

We present the design and fabrication of an endcap-type Paul trap. The trap is designed for studies with Ca$^{+}$ and Yb$^{+}$. The design, fabrication process, and characterization are presented in detail with a focus on trapping a single compensated ion at the rf node. A custom-built imaging system of $NA = 0.14$ and magnification $\approx 22 \times$ performs close to diffraction-limit and resolves multi-ion clusters. Controlled ion loading and characterization of the trap are performed using $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$. The experimentally determined quadrupole coefficient of the trap is $\approx 0.3$, which is very close to the design value. The relative frequency shift along the spectroscopy beam due to excess micromotion (EMM) is at the level of $3.5\times 10^{-18}$ for $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$. Applications of this trap encompass single-ion-based optical frequency standards, tests of fundamental physics, the study of mesoscopic Coulomb clusters, and the controlled interaction of a single ion with co-trapped atoms.

Exploring the Physical Properties, Hydrogen Storage Capacity and Thermal Barrier Performance of LaMg2H7: A First-Principles Investigation

LaMg2H7 is a ternary wide band gap semiconductor that is a member of the hydride family. The bulk physical characteristics of the LaMg2H7 compound, including its structural, electronic band structure, elastic, thermal, and optical characteristics, have been examined in this work utilizing density functional theory (DFT). The elastic constants indicate that {\rm LaMg}_2H_7 is mechanically stable, brittle in nature, and anisotropic. This studied compound possesses a moderate level of hardness. The band structure and density of states have been examined to have a better understanding of its electronic behavior. The intrinsic carrier concentrations and effective masses have been determined using the band structure. The gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity (Cwt%) has been calculated, indicating that this compound is suitable for hydrogen storage applications. This compound is dynamically stable, as confirmed by its phonon dispersion. Here, the details of this wide-band-gap semiconductor's reflectivity, absorption coefficient, refractive index, dielectric function, optical conductivity, and loss function are investigated. The substance is a moderate reflector of ultraviolet (UV) light. The absorption and conductivity support the gap in the band structure. The thermodynamic properties, such as bulk modulus, internal energy, specific heat capacity, entropy, thermal expansion coefficient, and Debye temperature, have been explored at varying temperatures and pressures. {\rm LaMg}_2H_7 has a moderate level of melting temperature with higher lattice thermal conductivity. The value of the thermal expansion coefficient and minimum thermal conductivity is highly recommended for use as a thermal barrier coating (TBC).

Global quantum discord and von Neumann entropy in multipartite two-level atomic systems

We have computed the global quantum discord and von Neumann entropy of multipartite two-level atomic systems interacting with a single-mode Fock field. We use Tavis-Cumming model. We have explored how quantum correlations and quantum entanglement evolve with time in such systems. The quantum system is prepared initially in a mixed state and different parameters are varied to see how they affect the information processing in the system. The dynamical character of the global quantum discord and von Neumann entropy show an interplay between classical and non-classical correlations. Photons in this model play an important role to assist the global quantum discord and von Neumann entropy and we observed that the effects of the field on the global quantum discord and von Neumann entropy reside in the time evolution of the system indicating that both atom and field states have become entangled. The global quantum discord is assisted in a non-linear fashion with the number of photons in the system. The global quantum discord and von Neumann entropy show linear behavior with each other in the dynamics of the system. The effects of intrinsic decoherence on the dynamics of the global quantum discord and von Neumann entropy are also studied. We have extrapolated the results for a large photon number on the system. We have studied the effect of the change in the size of the system on the maximum value of global quantum discord and von Neumann entropy and we have estimated the scaling coefficients for this behavior.

Experience With Machine Protection Systems At PIP2IT

The PIP-II Injector Test 1 PIP2IT facility accelerator was assembled in multiple stages in 2014 $-$ 2021 to test concepts and components of the future PIPII linac that is being constructed at Fermilab. In its final configuration, PIP2IT accelerated a 0.55 ms x 20 Hz x 2 mA H$-$ beam to 16 MeV. To protect elements of the beam line, a Machine Protection System MPS was implemented and commissioned. The beam was interrupted faster than 10$\mu$s when excessive beam loss was detected. The paper describes the MPS architecture, methods of the loss detection, procedure of the beam interruption, and operational experience at PIP2IT.

Waveform Design for 5G and Beyond

5G is envisioned to improve major key performance indicators (KPIs), such as peak data rate, spectral efficiency, power consumption, complexity, connection density, latency, and mobility. This chapter aims to provide a complete picture of the ongoing 5G waveform discussions and overviews the major candidates. It provides a brief description of the waveform and reveals the 5G use cases and waveform design requirements. The chapter presents the main features of cyclic prefix-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) that is deployed in 4G LTE systems. CP-OFDM is the baseline of the 5G waveform discussions since the performance of a new waveform is usually compared with it. The chapter examines the essential characteristics of the major waveform candidates along with the related advantages and disadvantages. It summarizes and compares the key features of different waveforms.
