Low background measurement in CANDLES-III for studying the neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{48}$Ca

We developed a CANDLES-III system to study the neutrino-less double beta (0$νββ$) decay of $^{48}$Ca. The proposed system employs 96 CaF$_{2}$ scintillation crystals (305 kg) with natural Ca ($^{\rm nat.}$Ca) isotope which corresponds 350\,g of $^{48}$Ca. External backgrounds were rejected using a 4$π$ active shield of a liquid scintillator surrounding the CaF$_2$ crystals. The internal backgrounds caused by the radioactive impurities within the CaF$_2$ crystals can be reduced effectively through analysis of the signal pulse shape. We analyzed the data obtained in the Kamioka underground for a live-time of 130.4\,days to evaluate the feasibility of the low background measurement with the CANDLES-III detector. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we estimated the background rate from the radioactive impurities in the CaF$_{2}$ crystals and the rate of high energy $γ$-rays caused by the (n, $γ$) reactions induced by environmental neutrons. The expected background rate was in a good agreement with the measured rate, i.e., approximately 10$^{-3}$ events/keV/yr/(kg of $^{\rm nat.}$Ca), in the 0$νββ$ window. In conclusion, the background candidates were estimated properly by comparing the measured energy spectrum with the background simulations. With this measurement method, we performed the first search for 0$νββ$ decay in a low background condition using a detector with a Ca isotope, in which the Ca present was not enriched, in a scale of hundreds of kg. The $^{48}$Ca isotope has a high potential for use in 0$νββ$ decay search, and is expected to be useful for the development of a next-generation detector for highly sensitive measurements.

The energy calibration system for CANDLES using (n, γ) reaction

CAlcium fluoride for the study of Neutrinos and Dark matters by Low-energy Spectrometer (CANDLES) searches for neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{48}$Ca using a CaF$_2$ scintillator array. A high Q-value of $^{48}$Ca at 4,272 keV enabled us to achieve very low background condition, however, at the same it causes difficulties in calibrating the detector's Q-value region because of the absence of a standard high-energy $γ$-ray source. Therefore, we have developed a novel calibration system based on $γ$-ray emission by neutron capture on $^{28}$Si, $^{56}$Fe and $^{58}$Ni nuclei. In the paper, we report the development of the new calibration system as well as the results of energy calibration in CANDLES up to 9 MeV.

Efficient spin transport along Si $\langle$100$\rangle$ at room temperature

We find efficient spin transport in Si at room temperature in lateral spin valves (LSVs). When the crystal orientation of the spin-transport channel in LSVs is changed from $\langle$110$\rangle$, which is a conventional cleavage direction, to $\langle$100$\rangle$, the maximum magnitude of the spin signals is markedly enhanced. From the analyses based on the one-dimensional spin diffusion model, we can understand that the spin injection/detection efficiency in Si$\langle$100$\rangle$ LSVs is larger than that in Si$\langle$110$\rangle$ ones. We infer that, in Si-based LSVs, the spin detection efficiency of the pure spin current is related to the crystallographic orientation of the valley structures of the conduction band in Si.

Evidence for $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ appearance in the CNGS neutrino beam with the OPERA experiment

The OPERA experiment is designed to search for $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillations in appearance mode i.e. through the direct observation of the $τ$ lepton in $ν_τ$ charged current interactions. The experiment has taken data for five years, since 2008, with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam. Previously, two $ν_τ$ candidates with a $τ$ decaying into hadrons were observed in a sub-sample of data of the 2008-2011 runs. Here we report the observation of a third $ν_τ$ candidate in the $τ^-\toμ^-$ decay channel coming from the analysis of a sub-sample of the 2012 run. Taking into account the estimated background, the absence of $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillations is excluded at the 3.4 $σ$ level.

Effects of interface electric field on the magnetoresistance in spin device

An extension of the standard spin diffusion theory is presented by introducing a density-gradient (DG) term that is suitable for describing interface quantum tunneling phenomena. The magnetoresistance (MR) ratio is modified by the DG term through an interface electric field. We have also carried out spin injection and detection measurements using four-terminal Si devices. The local measurement shows that the MR ratio changes depending on the current direction. We show that the change of the MR ratio depending on the current direction comes from the DG term regarding the asymmetry of the two interface electronic structures.

New results on $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ appearance with the OPERA experiment in the CNGS beam

The OPERA neutrino experiment is designed to perform the first observation of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ channel, via the detection of the $τ$-leptons created in charged current $ν_τ$ interactions. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consists of an emulsion/lead target with an average mass of about 1.2 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It is exposed to the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam, with a baseline of 730 km and a mean energy of 17 GeV. The observation of the first $ν_τ$ candidate event and the analysis of the 2008-2009 neutrino sample have been reported in previous publications. This work describes substantial improvements in the analysis and in the evaluation of the detection efficiencies and backgrounds using new simulation tools. The analysis is extended to a sub-sample of 2010 and 2011 data, resulting from an electronic detector-based pre-selection, in which an additional $ν_τ$ candidate has been observed. The significance of the two events in terms of a $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ oscillation signal is of 2.40 $σ$.

Origin of spontaneous broken mirror symmetry of vortex lattices in Nb

Combining the microscopic Eilenberger theory with the first principles band calculation, we investigate the stable flux line lattice (FLL) for a field applied to the four-fold axis; $H\parallel [001]$ in cubic Nb. The observed FLL transformation along $H_{c2}$ is almost perfectly explained without adjustable parameter, including the tilted square, scalene triangle with broken mirror symmetry, and isosceles triangle lattices upon increasing $T$. We construct a minimum Fermi surface model to understand those morphologies, in particular the stability of the scalene triangle lattice attributed to the lack of the mirror symmetry about the Fermi velocity maximum direction in k-space.

Finite surgeries on three-tangle pretzel knots

We classify Dehn surgeries on (p,q,r) pretzel knots that result in a manifold of finite fundamental group. The only hyperbolic pretzel knots that admit non-trivial finite surgeries are (-2,3,7) and (-2,3,9). Agol and Lackenby's 6-theorem reduces the argument to knots with small indices p,q,r. We treat these using the Culler-Shalen norm of the SL(2,C)-character variety. In particular, we introduce new techniques for demonstrating that boundary slopes are detected by the character variety.

Anisotropy, disorder, and superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 under high pressure

Resistivity measurements were carried out up to 8 GPa on single crystal and polycrystalline samples of CeCu2Si2 from differing sources in the homogeneity range. The anisotropic response to current direction and small uniaxial stresses was explored, taking advantage of the quasi-hydrostatic environment of the Bridgman anvil cell. It was found that both the superconducting transition temperature Tc and the normal state properties are very sensitive to uniaxial stress, which leads to a shift of the valence instability pressure Pv and a small but significant change in Tc for different orientations with respect to the tetragonal c-axis. Coexistence of superconductivity and residual resistivity close to the Ioffe-Regel limit around 5 GPa provides a compelling argument for the existence of a valence-fluctuation mediated pairing interaction at high pressure in CeCu2Si2.

Band-width control in a perovskite-type 3d^1 correlated metal Ca_{1-x}Sr_xVO_3. I. Evolution of the electronic properties and effective mass

Single crystals of the perovskite-type $3d^{1}$ metallic alloy system Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$VO$_3$ were synthesized in order to investigate metallic properties near the Mott transition. The substitution of a Ca$^{2+}$ ion for a Sr$^{2+}$ ion reduces the band width $W$ due to a buckling of the V-O-V bond angle from $\sim180^\circ$ for SrVO$_3$ to $\sim160^\circ$ for CaVO$_3$. Thus, the value of $W$ can be systematically controlled without changing the number of electrons making Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$VO$_3$: one of the most ideal systems for studying band-width effects. The Sommerfeld-Wilson's ratio ($\simeq2$), the Kadowaki-Woods ratio (in the same region as heavy Fermion systems), and a large $T^{2}$ term in the electric resistivity, even at 300 K, substantiate a large electron correlation in this system, though the effective mass, obtained by thermodynamic and magnetic measurements, shows only a systematic but moderate increase in going from SrVO$_3$ to CaVO$_3$, in contrast to the critical enhancement expected from the Brinkmann-Rice picture. It is proposed that the metallic properties observed in this system near the Mott transition can be explained by considering the effect of a non-local electron correlation.
