Evidence for high-energy and low-emittance electron beams using ionization injection of charge in a plasma wakefield accelerator

Ionization injection in a plasma wakefield accelerator was investigated experimentally using two lithium plasma sources of different lengths. The ionization of the helium gas, used to confine the lithium, injects electrons in the wake. After acceleration, these injected electrons were observed as a distinct group from the drive beam on the energy spectrometer. They typically have a charge of tens of pC, an energy spread of a few GeV, and a maximum energy of up to 30 GeV. The emittance of this group of electrons can be many times smaller than the initial emittance of the drive beam. The energy scaling for the trapped charge from one plasma length to the other is consistent with the blowout theory of the plasma wakefield.

Exact phase space matching for staging plasma and traditional accelerator components using longitudinally tailored plasma profiles

Phase space matching between two plasma-accelerator (PA) stages and between a PA and a traditional accelerator component is a critical issue for emittance preservation of beams accelerated by PAs. The drastic differences of the transverse focusing strengths as the beam propagates between different stages and components may lead to a catastrophic emittance growth in the presence of both finite energy spread and lack of proper matching. We propose using the linear focusing forces from nonlinear wakes in longitudinally tailored plasma density profiles to provide exact phase space matching to properly transport the electron beam through two such stages with negligible emittance growth. Theoretical analysis and particle-in-cell simulations show how these structures may work in four different scenarios. Good agreement between theory and simulation is obtained.

Tunable Electron Multibunch Production in Plasma Wakefield Accelerators

Synchronized, independently tunable and focused $μ$J-class laser pulses are used to release multiple electron populations via photo-ionization inside an electron-beam driven plasma wave. By varying the laser foci in the laboratory frame and the position of the underdense photocathodes in the co-moving frame, the delays between the produced bunches and their energies are adjusted. The resulting multibunches have ultra-high quality and brightness, allowing for hitherto impossible bunch configurations such as spatially overlapping bunch populations with strictly separated energies, which opens up a new regime for light sources such as free-electron-lasers.

Results on Plasma Focusing of High Energy Density Electron and Positron Beams

We present results from the SLAC E-150 experiment on plasma focusing of high energy density electron and, for the first time, positron beams. We also discuss measurements on plasma lens-induced synchrotron radiation, longitudinal dynamics of plasma focusing, and laser- and beam-plasma interactions.
