Effects of wave propagation in canonical Poisson gauge theory under an external magnetic field

The non-commutative electrodynamics based on the canonical Poisson gauge theory is studied in this paper. For a pure spatial non-commutativity, we investigate the plane wave solutions in the presence of a constant and uniform magnetic background field for the classical electrodynamics in canonical Poisson gauge theory. We obtain the properties of the medium ruled by the permittivity and the permeability tensors in terms of the non-commutative parameter, with the electrodynamics equations in the momentum space. Using the plane wave solutions mentioned, the dispersion relations are modified by the magnetic background, and the correspondent group velocity is affected by the spatial non-commutative parameter. We construct the energy-momentum tensor and discuss the conserved components of this tensor in the spatial non-commutative case. The birefringence phenomenon is showed through the modified dispersion relations, that depends directly on the non-commutative corrections and also on the magnetic background field. Using the bound of the polarized vacuum with laser (PVLAS) experiment for the vacuum magnetic birefringence, we estimate a theoretical value for the spatial non-commutative parameter.

Constraints on Hidden Sectors Using Rare Kaon Decays

The charged Kaon meson ($K^+$) features several hadronic decay modes, but the most relevant contribution to its decay width stems from the leptonic decay $K^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν_μ$. Given the precision acquired on the rare decay mode $K^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν_μ+ X$, one can use the data to set constraints on sub-GeV hidden sectors featuring light species that could contribute to it. Light gauge bosons that couple to muons could give rise to sizeable contributions. In this work, we will use data from the $K^+ \rightarrow μ^+ν_μ l^+l^-$, and $K^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν_μ ν\barν$ decays to place limits on light vector bosons present in Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDM) augmented by an Abelian gauge symmetry, 2HDM-$U(1)_X$. We put our findings into perpective with collider bounds, atomic parity violation, neutrino-electron scattering, and polarized electron scattering probes to show that rare Kaon decays provide competitive bounds in the sub-GeV mass range for different values of $\tanβ$.

A Dirac-material-inspired non-linear electrodynamic model

We propose and study the properties of a non-linear electrodynamics that emerges inspired on the physics of Dirac materials. This new electrodynamic model is an extension of the one-loop corrected non-linear effective Lagrangian computed in the work of ref. [3]. In the particular regime of a strong magnetic and a weak electric field, it reduces to the photonic non-linear model worked out by the authors of ref. [3]. We pursue our investigation of the proposed model by analyzing properties of the permittivity and permeability tensors, the energy-momentum tensor and wave propagation effects in presence of a uniform magnetic background. It is shown that the electrodynamics here presented exhibits the vacuum birefringence phenomenon. Subsequently, we calculate the lowest-order modifications to the interaction energy, considering still the presence of a uniform external magnetic field. Our analysis is carried out within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. The calculation reveals a screened Coulomb-like potential with an effective electric charge that runs with the external magnetic field but, as expected for Dirac-type materials, the screening disappears whenever the external magnetic field is switched off.

A Lorentz-violating low-energy model for the bilayer Graphene

In this work, we propose a model with Lorentz symmetry violation which describes the electronic low energy limit of the AA-bilayer graphene (BLG) system. The AA-type bilayer is known to preserve the linear dispersion relation of the graphene layer in the low energy limit. The theoretical model shows that in the BLG system, a time-like vector can be associated with the layer separation and contributes to the energy eigenstates. Based on these properties, we can describe in a $(2+1)$-dimensional space-time the fermionic quasi-particles that emerge in the low-energy limit with the introduction of a Lorentz-violating parameter, in analogy with the $(3 + 1)$-dimensional Standard Model Extension (SME). Moreover, we study the consequences of the coupling of these fermionic quasi-particles with the electromagnetic field, and we show via effective action that the low-energy photon acquires a massive spectrum. Finally, using the hydrodynamic approach in the collisionless limit, one finds that the LSV generates a new kind of anomalous thermal current to the vortexes of the system via coupling of the LSV vector.

Considerations on the modified Maxwell electrodynamics in the presence of an electric and magnetic background

The properties of the modified Maxwell electrodynamics (ModMax) are investigated in presence of external and uniform electric and magnetic fields. We expand the non-linear theory around an electromagnetic background up to second order in the propagating fields to obtain the permittivity and permeability tensors, dispersion relations, group velocity and refractive indices as functions of external fields. The case with perpendicular background fields is contemplated. The phenomenon of birefringence is discussed and the fundamental role of the ModMax parameter becomes clear. We calculate the difference of the refractive indices in terms of this parameter and the external fields. Finally, we set up a scenario where the axion is present and compute the interaction energy for the coupled axion-ModMax electrodynamics if a magnetic background field is considered. This calculation is carried out in the framework of the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent variables formalism. Our results show that the interaction energy contains a linear component, leading to the confinement of static probe charges where the interference between the ModMax parameter, the axion mass and the axion-photon coupling constant is pointed out.

The axion-photon mixing in non-linear electrodynamic scenarios

In this contribution, we re-assess some aspects of axionic electrodynamics by coupling non-linear electromagnetic effects to axion physics. We present a number of motivations to justify the coupling of the axion to the photon in terms of a general non-linear extension of the electromagnetic sector. Our emphasis in the paper relies on the investigation of the constitutive permittivity and permeability tensors, for which the axion contributes by introducing dependence on the frequency and wave vector of the propagating radiation. Also, we point out how the axion mass and the axion-photon-photon coupling constant contribute to a dispersive behavior of the electromagnetic waves, in contrast to what happens in the case of non-linear extensions, when effective refractive indices appear which depend only on the direction of the propagation with respect to the external fields. The axion changes this picture by yielding refractive indices with dependence on the wavelength. We apply our results to the special case of the (non-birefringent) Born-Infeld Electrodynamics and we show that it becomes birefringent whenever the axion is coupled. The paper is supplemented by an Appendix, where we follow our own path to approach the recent discussion on a controversy in the definition of the Poynting vector of axionic electrodynamics.

Reconciling LSND and super-Kamiokande data through the dynamical Lorentz symmetry breaking in a four-Majorana fermion model

We propose a model of Majorana fermions with quartic self-couplings. These Majorana fermions acquire masses via a type II seesaw mechanism in which the physical eigenstates are identified as a light Majorana fermion and another heavy Majorana fermion. On a physical basis, the quartic self-couplings involve axial currents of these Majorana fermions, and also the interaction of the axial current for the light particle with the heavy particle one. We introduce two auxiliaries gauge fields in this model, and we study the stability conditions of the correspondent effective potential of the model. The ground state of the effective potential introduces two 4-vectors as scales of vacuum expected values, and consequently, the dynamical Lorentz symmetry breaking (DLSB) emerges in the model. We use the expansion of the effective action to calculate the effective Lagrangian up to second order in the auxiliary fields as fluctuations around the ground state. This mechanism generates dynamics for the auxiliary gauge fields, mixed mass terms, longitudinal propagation, and Chern-Simons term through radiative corrections. After the diagonalization, the two gauge fields gain masses through an analogous type II seesaw mechanism in which a gauge boson has a light mass, and the other one acquires a heavy mass. In this scenario of Lorentz symmetry breaking, we obtain the correspondent dispersion relations for the Majorana fermions and the gauge boson fields. Posteriorly, we analyze the neutrino's oscillations in the presence of a DLSB parameter, in the transition $ν_{e} \rightarrow ν_μ$. We discuss the parameter space of this transition and show that the DLSB can conciliate the LSND and super-Kamiokande results.

Considerations on anomalous photon and Z-boson self-couplings from the Born-Infeld weak hypercharge action

We investigate the effects of the Born-Infeld action on the Abelian sector of the electroweak model. The consequence of this approach is the emergence of anomalous couplings in the neutral sector of the $Z$-gauge boson and photon. These new couplings consist of quartic interactions of the photon with the $Z$-particle, as for example, three-photon-and-one-$Z$ vertex. With that, we obtain the decay width of $Z \to 3\,γ$ from which we impose a bound on the Born-Infeld parameter. Other bounds are also obtained from the photon quartic couplings. Subsequently, we consider the presence of an external uniform magnetic field in connection with this Born-Infeld weak hypercharge model. The magnetic background field yields new kinematic effects, like the kinetic mixing between the photon and the $Z$-boson, and we obtain thereby the corresponding dispersion relations for the mixed photon-$Z$-particle system. Finally, we calculate the lowest-order modifications to the interaction energy for the anomalous coupling $3γ-Z$, within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. Our results show that the interaction energy contains a linear term leading to the confinement of static probe charges. With the help of the potential that comes out, interparticle forces are estimated.

Lorentz-symmetry violation in the electroweak sector: scattering processes in future $e^+ \, e^-$ colliders

We study CPT-odd non-minimal Lorentz-symmetry violating couplings in the electroweak sector modifying the interactions between leptons, gauge mediators and the Higgs boson. The tree-level (differential) cross sections for three important electroweak processes are discussed: $e^+ \, e^- \rightarrow Z \, H$, $e^+ \, e^- \rightarrow Z \, Z$ and $γ\, γ\rightarrow W^+ \, W^-$. By considering next-generation $e^+ \, e^-$ colliders reaching center-of-mass energies at the TeV scale and the estimated improved precision for the measurements of the respective cross sections, we are able to project upper bounds on the purely time-like background 4-vector as strict as $\lesssim 10^{-5} \, \mbox{GeV}^{-1}$, in agreement with previous work on similar Lorentz-violating couplings.

Dispersion Relations in Non-Linear Electrodynamics and the Kinematics of the Compton Effect in a Magnetic Background

Non-linear electrodynamic models are re-assessed in this paper to pursue an investigation of the kinematics of the Compton effect in a magnetic background. Before considering specific models, we start off by presenting a general non-linear Lagrangian built up in terms of the most general Lorentz- and gauge-invariant combinations of the electric and magnetic fields. The extended Maxwell-like equations and the energy-momentum tensor conservation are presented and discussed in their generality. We next expand the fields around a uniform and time-independent electric and magnetic backgrounds up to second order in the propagating wave, and compute dispersion relations which account for the effect of the external fields. We obtain thereby the refraction index and the group velocity for the propagating radiation in different situations. In particular, we focus on the kinematics of the Compton effect in presence of external magnetic fields. This yields constraints that relate the derivatives of the general Lagrangian with respect to the field invariants and the magnetic background under consideration. We carry out our inspection by focusing on some specific non-linear electrodynamic effective models: Hoffmann-Infeld, Euler-Heisenberg, generalized Born-Infeld and Logarithmic.

Majorana Fermion Dark Matter in Minimally Extended Left-Right Symmetric Model

We present a minimal extension of the left-right symmetric model based on the gauge group $SU(3)_{c} \times SU(2)_{L} \times SU(2)_{R} \times U(1)_{B-L} \times U(1)_{X}$, in which a vector-like fermion pair ($ζ_L$ and $ζ_R$) charged under the $U(1)_{B-L} \times U(1)_X$ symmetry is introduced. Associated with the symmetry breaking of the gauge group $SU(2)_{R} \times U(1)_{B-L} \times U(1)_{X}$ down to the Standard Model (SM) hypercharge $U(1)_Y$, Majorana masses for $ζ_{L, R}$ are generated and the lightest mass eigenstate plays a role of the dark matter (DM) in our universe by its communication with the SM particles through a new neutral gauge boson "$X$". We consider various phenomenological constraints of this DM scenario, such as the observed DM relic density, the LHC Run-2 constraints from the search for a narrow resonance, and the perturbativity of the gauge couplings below the Planck scale. Combining all constraints, we identify the allowed parameter region which turns out to be very narrow. A significant portion of the currently allowed parameter region will be tested by the High-Luminosity LHC experiments.

The CP violation and scalar dark matter in a 331 model

The 331 model with right-handed neutrinos is re-assessed to investigate the CP violation in the quark sector. After the spontaneous symmetry breaking, the masses and physical fields of the particle content are obtained. The fermions content of the 331 model is enlarged to include exotic quarks with known electric charge and with masses defined at the TeV scale. The existence of these exotic quarks induces extra CP violations via couplings with quarks of the Standard Model mediated by charged gauge boson with mass fixed at the TeV scale. An extra discrete $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry is introduced in the 331 model to get a stable scalar field that can be a candidate to the dark matter content. The new scalar field interacts at tree level with the $Z^{\prime}$ gauge boson that works as a dark matter portal. The relic density associated with the scalar field is calculated to yield the solution mass that satisfies the observed dark matter. The region allowed on the parameter space of the dark matter mass versus $Z^{\prime}$ mass is obtained to include the bounds of PANDAX2017, XENON1T(2t.y) and LUX experiments.

Thermostatistical analysis for short-range interaction Potentials

In this paper, we study the thermodynamics of short-range central potentials, namely, the Lee-Wick potential, and the Plasma potential. In the first part of the paper we obtain the numerical solution for the orbits equation for these potentials. Posteriorly, we introduce the thermodynamics through the microcanonical and canonical ensembles formalism defined on the phase space of the system. We calculate the density of states associated with the Lee-Wick and the Plasma potentials. From density of states, we obtain the thermodynamical physical quantities like entropy and temperature as functions of the energy. We also use the Boltzmann-Gibbs formalism to obtain the partition functions, the mean energy and the thermal capacity for these short-range potentials.

A general relativity formulation for the Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts noncommutative space-time

The Doplicher, Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR) noncommutative (NC) formalism is propose in a curved space-time. In DFR approach, the NC parameter is promoted to the set of coordinates of the space-time. As consequence, the field theory defined on this space contains extra dimensions. We propose a metric containing the new coordinates to explain the length measurements of this extended space. We promote the Minkowski part of this extended metric to a metric defined in a curved manifold. Thus, we can build up a NC gravitation model with extra-dimensions. Based on the curved metric, we propose an Einstein-Hilbert action to describe the NC gravitation model on the DFR space. We present the NC version for the gravitational field equations. The weak field approximation is considered in the field equations to obtain the wave equations for the graviton propagation on the DFR space.

Testing Lorentz-symmetry violation via electroweak decays

In this work we introduce CPT-odd non-minimal Lorentz-symmetry violating couplings to the electroweak sector modifying the interaction between leptons and gauge bosons. The vertex rules allow us to calculate tree-level processes modified by the presence of the novel dimension-five operators. For definitiveness, we investigate the $W$ decay into a lepton-neutrino pair, the $Z$ decay into pairs of charged and neutral leptons, as well as the decay of the muon. By comparing the experimental measurements on these processes to our results we are able to bound several combinations of the background 4-vectors to be $\lesssim 10^{-4} \, \mbox{GeV}^{-1}$.

A Dark Hidden-Sector of Dirac fermions at the GeV scale

Our contribution sets out to investigate the GeV-scale phenomenology of a model based on an $SU_{L}(2) \times U_{Y}(1) \times U(1)_{X}$-gauge symmetry. The model accommodates, as a consequence of the symmetry-breaking pattern, a light gauge boson at the GeV-scale or below, allowing then to set up a new low energy physics. The fermion sector includes an exotic candidate to Dark Matter (DM) and the whole fermionic field content yields, as it is mandatory, the cancellation of the chiral anomaly. %In this strict sense, we refer to our proposal as a unified description : two different and exclusive symmetry-breaking patterns are treated with a single Lagrangian density and a common symmetry group. Furthermore, The light gauge boson and the exotic fermion are proposed as candidates to the so-called dark sector of the model that we try to describe in this contribution. The low-energy spectrum exhibits a hidden scalar field with mass fixed at the GeV level in the Higgs sector. We calculate the DM relic density associated with the dark fermion candidate by considering two annihilation processes in which the light gauge boson works as a portal for the DM detection. The observed relic density points to a mass of $3.4$ GeV for the DM fermion, while the light gauge boson mass is $8.0$ GeV. We also investigate the direct detection of DM in the low energy regime and obtain the region of parameters allowed by recent discussions on DM limits. Finally, the correction to the muon magnetic dipole moment is calculated considering the gauge boson mass at the GeV scale or below.

Minimally Extended Left-Right Symmetric Model for Dark Matter with U(1) Portal

A minimal extension of the left-right symmetric model for neutrino masses that includes a vector-like singlet fermion dark matter (DM) is presented with the DM connected to the visible sector via a gauged U(1) portal. We discuss the symmetry breaking in this model and calculate the mass and mixings of the extra heavy neutral gauge boson at the TeV scale. The extra gauge boson can decay to both standard model particles as well to dark matter. We calculate the relic density of the singlet fermion dark matter and its direct detection cross section and use these constraints to obtain the allowed parameter range for the new gauge coupling and the dark matter mass.

A $Z'$-model and the magnetism of a dark fermion candidate

Our contribution sets out to investigate the phenomenology of a gauge model based on an $SU_{L}(2) \times U_{R}(1)_{Q} \times U(1)_{Q'}$-symmetry group. The model can accommodate, through its symmetry-breaking pattern, a candidate to a heavy $Z'$-boson at the TeV-scale. The extended Higgs sector introduces a heavy scalar whose mass lies in the region $1.2-3.7 \, \mbox{TeV}$. The fermion sector includes an exotic candidate to Dark Matter that mixes with the right-handed neutrino component in the Higgs sector, so that the whole field content ensures the cancellation of the $U(1)$-quiral anomaly. The masses are fixed according to the particular way the symmetry breaking takes place. In view of the possible symmetry breakdown pattern, we study the phenomenological implications in a high-energy scenario. We worek out the magnetic dipole momentum (MDM) of the exotic fermion and the transition MDM due to its mixing with the right-neutrino.
