Dynamics of the Ising Spin-Glass Model in a Transverse Field

We use quantum Monte Carlo methods and various analytic approximations to solve the Ising spin-glass model in a transverse field in the disordered phase. We focus on the behavior of the frequency dependent susceptibility of the system above and below the critical field . We establish the existence of an exact equivalence between this problem and the single-impurity Kondo model at the quantum critical point. Our predictions for the long-time dynamics of the model are in good agreement with experimental results on $LiHo_{0.167}Y_{0.833}F_4$.

Solution of the Quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Model

We solve the $S=1/2$ infinite-range random Heisenberg Hamiltonian in the paramagnetic phase using quantum Monte Carlo and analytical techniques. We find that the spin-glass susceptibility diverges at a finite temperature $T_g$ which demonstrates the existence of a low-temperature ordered phase. Quantum fluctuations reduce the critical temperature and the effective Curie constant with respect to their classical values. They also give rise to a redistribution of spectral weight in the dynamic structure factor in the paramagnetic phase. As the temperature decreases the spectrum of magnetic excitations gradually splits into quasi-elastic and inelastic contributions whose weights scale as $S^2$ and $S$ at low temperature.

Low frequency spectroscopy of the correlated metallic system $Ca_xSr_{1-x}VO_3$

We study the photoemission and optical conductivity response of the strongly correlated metallic system $Ca_xSr_{1-x}VO_3$. We find that the basic features of the transfer of spectral weight in photoemission experiments and the unusual lineshape of the optical response can be understood by modeling the system with a one band Hubbard model close to the Mott-Hubbard transition. We present a detailed comparison between the low frequency experimental data and the corresponding theoretical predictions obtained within the LISA method that is exact in the limit of large lattice connectivity.

The Local Impurity Self Consistent Approximation (LISA) to Strongly Correlated Fermion Systems and the Limit of Infinite Dimensions

We review the dynamical mean-field theory of strongly correlated fermion systems which is based on a mapping of lattice models onto quantum impurity models subject to a self-consistency condition. This mapping is exact in the limit of large lattice coordination (or infinite spatial dimensions). This method can be used for the determination of phase diagrams and the calculation of thermodynamic properties, one-particle Green's functions, and response functions, using analytic and numerical techniques which are described. We review the recent progress in understanding the Hubbard model and the Mott metal-insulator transition within this approach, including some comparison to experiments on three-dimensional transition-metal oxides. Some applications of this method to other models are also reviewed. The present limitations of the approach, and possible extensions of the formalism are finally discussed. Computer programs for the numerical implementation of this method are provided with this article.

Transfer of Spectral Weight in Spectroscopies of Correlated Electron Systems

We study the transfer of spectral weight in the photoemission and optical spectra of strongly correlated electron systems. Within the LISA, that becomes exact in the limit of large lattice coordination, we consider and compare two models of correlated electrons, the Hubbard model and the periodic Anderson model. The results are discussed in regard of recent experiments. In the Hubbard model, we predict an anomalous enhancement optical spectral weight as a function of temperature in the correlated metallic state which is in qualitative agreement with optical measurements in $V_2O_3$. We argue that anomalies observed in the spectroscopy of the metal are connected to the proximity to a crossover region in the phase diagram of the model. In the insulating phase, we obtain an excellent agreement with the experimental data and present a detailed discussion on the role of magnetic frustration by studying the $k-$resolved single particle spectra. The results for the periodic Anderson model are discussed in connection to recent experimental data of the Kondo insulators $Ce_3Bi_4Pt_3$ and $FeSi$. The model can successfully explain the different energy scales that are associated to the thermal filling of the optical gap, which we also relate to corresponding changes in the density of states. The temperature dependence of the optical sum rule is obtained and its relevance for the interpretation of the experimental data discussed. Finally, we argue that the large scattering rate measured in Kondo insulators cannot be described by the periodic Anderson model.

Optical Conductivity in Mott-Hubbard Systems

We study the transfer of spectral weight in the optical spectra of a strongly correlated electron system as a function of temperature and interaction strength. Within a dynamical mean field theory of the Hubbard model that becomes exact in the limit of large lattice coordination, we predict an anomalous enhancement of spectral weight as a function of temperature in the correlated metallic state and report on experimental measurements which agree with this prediction in $V_2O_3$. We argue that the optical conductivity anomalies in the metal are connected to the proximity to a crossover region in the phase diagram of the model.

Correlation Induced Insulator to Metal Transitions

We study a spinless two-band model at half-filling in the limit of infinite dimensions. The ground state of this model in the non-interacting limit is a band-insulator. We identify transitions to a metal and to a charge-Mott insulator, using a combination of analytical, Quantum Monte Carlo, and zero temperature recursion methods. The metallic phase is a non-Fermi liquid state with algebraic local correlation functions with universal exponents over a range of parameters.
