Quantum processing with ensembles of rare earth ions in a stoichiometric crystal

We describe a method for creating small quantum processors in a crystal stoichiometric in an optically active rare earth ion. The crystal is doped with another rare earth, creating an ensemble of identical clusters of surrounding ions, whose optical and hyperfine frequencies are uniquely determined by their spatial position in the cluster. Ensembles of ions in each unique position around the dopant serve as qubits, with strong local interactions between ions in different qubits. These ensemble qubits can each be used as a quantum memory for light, and we show how the interactions between qubits can be used to perform linear operations on the stored photonic state. We also describe how these ensemble qubits can be used to enact, and study, error correction.

Echo-Based Quantum Memory

In this book chapter we review photon echo based schemes for optical quantum memory. We outline the basic principles of the Atomic Frequency Comb (AFC), Gradient Echo Memory (GEM) and Rephased Amplified Spontaneous Emission (RASE) protocols. We describe the properties of the rare-earth ion and gaseous vapours ensembles that have been used to carry out experimental demonstrations. These experiments are then discussed with reference to relevant classical and quantum performance criteria.

Quantum state transfer through time reversal of an optical channel

Rare earth ions have exceptionally long coherence times, making them an excellent candidate for quantum information processing. A key part of this processing is quantum state transfer. We show that perfect state transfer can be achieved by time reversing the intermediate quantum channel, and suggest using a gradient echo memory (GEM) to perform this time reversal. We propose an experiment with rare earth ions to verify these predictions, where an emitter and receiver crystal are connected with an optical channel passed through a GEM. We investigate the affect experimental imperfections and collective dynamics have on the state transfer process. We demonstrate superrandiant effects can enhance coupling into the optical channel and improve the transfer fidelity. We lastly discuss how our results apply to state transfer of entangled states.

Ultra-narrow optical inhomogeneous linewidth in a stoichiometric rare earth crystal

We have obtained a low optical inhomogeneous linewidth of 25 MHz in the stoichiometric rare earth crystal EuCl3 .6H2 O by isotopically purifying the crystal in 35 Cl. With this linewidth, an important limit for stoichiometric rare earth crystals is surpassed: the hyperfine structure of 153Eu is spectrally resolved, allowing the whole population of 153Eu3+ ions to be prepared in the same hyperfine state using hole burning techniques. This material also has a very high optical density and can have long coherence times when deuterated. This combination of properties offers new prospects for quantum information applications. We consider two of these, quantum memories and quantum many body studies. We detail the improvements in the performance of current memory protocols possible in these high optical depth crystals, and how certain memory protocols, such as off-resonant Raman memories, can be implemented for the first time in a solid state system. We explain how the strong excitation-induced interactions observed in this material resemble those seen in Rydberg systems, and describe how these interactions can lead to quantum many-body states that could be observed using standard optical spectroscopy techniques.

Reducing decoherence in optical and spin transitions in rare-earth-ion doped materials

In many important situations the dominant dephasing mechanism in cryogenic rare-earth-ion doped systems is due to magnetic field fluctuations from spins in the host crystal. Operating at a magnetic field where a transition has a zero first-order-Zeeman (ZEFOZ) shift can greatly reduce this dephasing. Here we identify the location of transitions with zero first-order Zeeman shift for optical transitions in Pr3+:YAG and for spin transitions in Er3+:Y2SiO5. The long coherence times that ZEFOZ would enable would make Pr3+:YAG a strong candidate for achieving the strong coupling regime of cavity QED, and would be an important step forward in creating long-lived telecommunications wavelength quantum memories in Er3+:Y2SiO5. This work relies mostly on published spin Hamiltonian parameters but Raman heterodyne spectroscopy was performed on Pr3+:YAG to measure the parameters for the excited state.

Photon echo quantum memories in inhomogeneously broadened two level atoms

Here we propose a solid-state quantum memory that does not require spectral holeburning, instead using strong rephasing pulses like traditional photon echo techniques. The memory uses external broadening fields to reduce the optical depth and so switch off the collective atom-light interaction when desired. The proposed memory should allow operation with reasonable efficiency in a much broader range of material systems, for instance Er3+ doped crystals which have a transition at 1.5 um. We present analytic theory supported by numerical calculations and initial experiments.

Strong coupling cavity QED using rare-earth-ion dopants in monolithic resonators: what you can do with a weak oscillator

We investigate the possibility of achieving the strong coupling regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics using rare earth ions as impurities in monolithic optical resonators. We conclude that due to the weak oscillator strengths of the rare earths, it may be possible but difficult, to reach the regime where the single photon Rabi frequency is large compared to both the cavity and atom decay rates. However reaching the regime where the saturation photon and atom numbers are less than one should be much more achievable. We show that in this `bad cavity' regime, transfer of quantum states and an optical phase shift conditional on the state of the atom is still possible, and suggest a method for coherent detection of single dopants.

Multi-Modal Properties and Dynamics of the Gradient Echo Quantum Memory

We investigate the properties of a recently proposed Gradient Echo Memory (GEM) scheme for information mapping between optical and atomic systems. We show that GEM can be described by the dynamic formation of polaritons in k-space. This picture highlights the flexibility and robustness with regards to the external control of the storage process. Our results also show that, as GEM is a frequency-encoding memory, it can accurately preserve the shape of signals that have large time-bandwidth products, even at moderate optical depths. At higher optical depths, we show that GEM is a high fidelity multi-mode quantum memory.

Analytic treatment of CRIB Quantum Memories for Light using Two-level Atoms

It has recently been discovered that the optical analogue of a gradient echo in an optically thick material could form the basis of a optical memory that is both completely efficient and noise free. Here we present analytical calculation showing this is the case. There is close analogy between the operation of the memory and an optical system with two beam splitters. We can use this analogy to calculate efficiencies as a function of optical depth for a number of quantum memory schemes based on controlled inhomogeneous broadening. In particular we show that multiple switching leads to a net 100% retrieval efficiency for the optical gradient echo even in the optically thin case.

New infrared emission of the NV centre in diamond: Zeeman and uniaxial stress studies

An emission band in the infrared is shown to be associated with a transition within the negative nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The band has a zero-phonon line at 1046 nm, and uniaxial stress and magnetic field measurements indicate that the emission is associated with a transition between 1E and 1A1 singlet levels. Inter-system crossing to these singlets causes the spin polarisation that makes the NV- centre attractive for quantum information processing, and the infrared emission band provides a new avenue for using the centre in such applications.

Gradient Echo Quantum Memory for Light using Two-level Atoms

We propose a quantum memory for light that is analogous to the NMR gradient echo. Our proposal is ideally perfectly efficient and provides simplifications to current 3-level quantum memory schemes based on controlled inhomogeneous broadening. Our scheme does not require auxiliary light fields. Instead the input optical pulse interacts only with two-level atoms that have linearly increasing Stark shifts. By simply reversing the sign of the atomic Stark shifts, the pulse is retrieved in the forward direction. We present analytical, numerical and experimental results of this scheme. We report experimental efficiencies of up to 15% and suggest simple realizable improvements to significantly increase the efficiency.

The nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond re-visited

Symmetry considerations are used in presenting a model of the electronic structure and the associated dynamics of the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The model accounts for the occurrence of optically induced spin polarization, for the change of emission level with spin polarization and for new measurements of transient emission. The rate constants given are in variance to those reported previously.

Photon Echoes Produced by Switching Electric Fields

We demonstrate photon echoes in Eu$^{3+}$:Y$_{2}$SiO$_{5}$ by controlling the inhomogeneous broadening of the Eu$^{3+}$ $^{7}$F$_{0}\leftrightarrow^{5}$D$_{0}$ optical transition. This transition has a linear Stark shift and we induce inhomogeneous broadening by applying an external electric field gradient. After optical excitation, reversing the polarity of the field rephases the ensemble, resulting in a photon echo. This is the first demonstration of such a photon echo and its application as a quantum memory is discussed.

Stopped light with storage times greater than one second using EIT in a solid

We report on the demonstration of light storage for times greater than a second in praseodymium doped Y$_2$SiO$_5$ using electromagnetically induced transparency. The long storage times were enabled by the long coherence times possible for the hyperfine transitions in this material. The use of a solid state system also enabled operation with the probe and coupling beam counter propagating, allowing easy separation of the two beams. The efficiency of the storage was low because of the low optical thickness of the sample, as is discussed this deficiency should be easy to rectify.

Dynamic decoherence control of a solid-state nuclear quadrupole qubit

We report on the application of a dynamic decoherence control pulse sequence on a nuclear quadrupole transition in $Pr^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5$ . Process tomography is used to analyse the effect of the pulse sequence. The pulse sequence was found to increase the decoherence time of the transition to over 30 seconds. Although the decoherence time was significantly increased, the population terms were found to rapidly decay on the application of the pulse sequence. The increase of this decay rate is attributed to inhomogeneity in the ensemble. Methods to circumvent this limit are discussed.

Demonstration of conditional quantum phase shift between ions in a solid

Due to their potential for long coherence times, dopant ions have long been considered promising candidates for scalable solid state quantum computing. However, the demonstration of two qubit operation has proven to be problematic, largely due to the difficulty of addressing closely spaced ions. Here we use optically active ions and optical frequency addressing to demonstrate a conditional phase shift between two qubits.

Phase-dependent decoherence of optical transitions in Pr3+:LaF3 in the presence of a driving field

The decoherence times of orthogonally phased components of the optical transition dipole moment in a two-level system have been observed to differ by an order of magnitude. This phase anisotropy is observed in coherent transient experiments where an optical driving field is present during extended periods of decoherence. The decoherence time of the component of the dipole moment in phase with the driving field is extended compared to T_2, obtained from two-pulse photon echoes, in analogy with the spin locking technique of NMR.

Experimental demonstration of quantum state tomography and qubit-qubit interactions for rare-earth-ion based solid state qubits

We report on the implementation of quantum state tomography for an ensemble of Eu$^{3+}$ dopant ions in a \YSO crystal. The tomography was applied to a qubit based on one of the ion's optical transitions. The qubit was manipulated using optical pulses and measurements were made by observing the optical free induction in a phase sensitive manner. Fidelities of $>90$% for the combined preparation and measurement process were achieved. Interactions between the ions due to the change in the ions' permanent electric dipole moment when excited optically were also measured. In light of these results, the ability to do multi-qubit quantum computation using this system is discussed.
